ELIZABETH
HUGHES GOSSETT
Dynamic community leader and devoted servant and protector of the public good, the legacy of the law is deeply enmeshed in the character of Elizabeth Hughes Gossett, daughter of the legendary Charles Evans Hughes, Chief Justice of the United States, and once a distinguished Professor of Law at New York Law School in its early formative years. A graduate of Barnard College, the interests of Elizabeth Gossett are numerous. Countless organizations have benefitted from her keen intellect and rare gift for administration. Indeed, the lives of many thousands of individuals have been touched by her compassion and her ability to seek out meaningful solutions to difficult socio-economic problems. She is President of the United States Supreme Court Historical Society and a member of the Board of the prestigious Judicial Fellows Commission. As a concerned citizen of the Detroit metropolitan area, Elizabeth Hughes Gossett has served on the Board of Directors of Planned Parenthood, the Junior League of Birmingham, the Children's Center, the Detroit Urban League, the Rehabilitation Institute, and the Detroit Tribute Fund. She has also been active as a member of the National Board of the National Conference of Christians and Jews. A devoted friend and patron of education, Mrs. Gossett has shaped the futures of numerous educational institutions as a Trustee of the MerrillPalmer Institute from 1953 to 1974; as a Trustee of Barnard College from 1953 to 1970; as Vice-President of the Foundation Trustees of Michigan State University at Oakland, now known as Oakland University, from 1957 to 1966; and as a Director of the Brookside School of Cranbrook and the Kingswood ¡¡school of Cranbrook, which are located in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. She has also served as President of the Detroit Chapter of the United Nations Association. Elizabeth Hughes Gossett is a member of the Board of Governors of the nationally recognized Cranbrook Academy of Art, a Past Vice-Chairman of the Cranbrook Music Festival, as well as a Trustee of the Cran brook Educational Community. Elizabeth Hughes Gossett, in recognition of your outstanding record of spirited public service and your steadfast devotion to excellence, and by authority of the Board of Trustees, New York Law School is proud to confer upon you the degree of Doctor of Laws "honoris causa" with all the rights, privileges and honors thereunto appertaining.
HOWARD T. MARKEY Scholar, lecturer, attorney, aviator and gifted jurist, the accomplishments of Howard T. Markey are legion. Indeed, Judge Markey has served his profession, his community and his nation with dedication, bravery and compassion. A native of Chicago, Judge Markey earned his Juris Doctor degree cum laude from Loyola University in 1949, and a Master of Patent Law from the John Marshall Law School in 1950.
Engaged in the practice of law with the firm of Parker, Markey and Plyer for more than twenty years, Judge Markey was appointed Chief Judge of the United States Court of Customs and Patent Appeals in 1972. Judge Markey is a member of the Judicial Conference of the United States, the Board of Certification for Circuit Executives, the Subcommittee on Judicial Improvements of the Judicial Conference of the United States, the World Conference of Judges, the American Judicature Society, and the American Bar Association. Judge Markey began a distinguished military career in the Second World War as an engineering test pilot of this nation's first jet aircraft. He served with distinction for five years in World War II and twenty-one months in the Korean War. He returned as a Major General in the United States Air Force Reserve. In recognition of his meritorious service and valor, Judge Markey was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Soldier's Medal, the Purple Heart, the Air Medal, the Bronze Star, nine service medals, and the Military Merit Ulchi from the Government of South Korea. In conjunction with these past services, Judge Markey was National President and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the United States Air Force Association. He is a Trustee of the Aerospace Education Foundation of the United States. In 1964 he received the highly coveted George Washington Honor Medal awarded by the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge. In recognition of these outstanding achievements as a dynamic jurist, highly skilled attorney, and compassionate warrior, the Trustees of New York Law School are pleased and honored to confer upon Howard T. Markey the degree of Doctor of Laws "honoris causa" with all the rights, privileges and honors thereunto appertaining.
DANIEL PATRICK MOYNIHAN As the crises and challenges of the world and this great city reach out to touch the lives of all who dwell therein, the citizens of the Empire State are fortunate in the strength of leadership demonstrated by its junior United States Senator, Daniel Patrick Moynihan. Born in Oklahoma, but raised and educated in New York City, Senator Moynihan entered the City College of New York in 1943, only to withdraw in the service of his country in 1944 to enlist in the United States Navy. Honorably discharged in 194 7, Senator Moynihan attended Tufts University, receiving a Bachelor of Naval Science degree in 1946, a Bachelor of Arts cum Laude in 1948, and an M.A. in 1949. Having been designated as a Fulbright
