In 1984, the Student Bar Association was approached by members of that graduating class to begin a Yearbook two months before graduation. Needless to say, two months was not sufficient time to organize and implement such a tremendous project. The seed was planted, however, and from that seed has sprouted the non-stop efforts of a small part of the student body who have actively participated in organizing, photographing, laying out and writing copy for the first New York Law School Yearbook - CAVEAT EMPTOR. A somewhat larger body of students supported our efforts by purchasing this Year book. Hopefully by next year, the Yearbook will be established as a tradition in the law school community, bringing with it even greater support of the student body for whom our efforts have been exerted. We dedicate this first volume of CAVEAT EMPTOR to our unnamed supporters - our families and friends who have been so patient, understanding and faithful in standing behind us, permitting us to attach those coveted letters, J.D., after our names.

Dear 1985 Graduate: I would like to congratulate the students who made this project a reality. It took a great deal of time, energy and dedication and the result is the first student yearbook in the history of the Law School.
One of my goals as Dean of New York Law School is to bring
the entire Law School community- students, faculty, staff and Deans - closer together.
In doing so, I believe we will not only better
accomplish the educationa l mission of the Law School but also instill a sense of loyalty to the institution. This yearbook is an important step in that direction. Yours truly,

A Student Reminisces In my first year of law school I briefed a tort case in verse for Professor Koffler's class. The case was The Six Carpenter's Case. The poetry was much better than my rendition of the law:
The Six Carpenter's Tale (a brief verse)
••
Six carpenters went to a tavern They ordered some wine and some bread But when the innkeeper gave them the bill They gave him the shaft instead Now the innkeeper went to the sheriff Saying, "These men doth convert my food And offer me nought but a trespass. Ab initio were they so rude." "Not so," said the learned magistrate, "For their entry was not done by law. 'Twas you who gave them the wine and the food; 'Twas you who opened the door.
Student Lounge Reception
"If these men had our general license Their acta exteriora would show Ab initio interiora secreta As any reasonable man would know. "But you, sir, have given them entry. Though your food is in their distraint 'Twas by your authority given And trespass is not your complaint." So ends our quaint little story The moral we now understand: Don't give a carpenter dinner 'Till his money's held fast in your hand. Professor Koffler's immediate reply (as best I can reconstruct it) was: There certainly wasn't a trespass But not for the reason you gave. There could not have been any trespass Because there wasn't an act by the knave. -Adrian Calderone

Criminal Law Society
International Law Society The NYLS International Law Society (ILS) is an organization of students who are interested in international law and world affairs. Through its various activities and lectures the ILS hopes to add to the knowledge of international law, to open possibilities for careers in this field, and to build up the reputation of NYLS as a center for the study of international law.
The Criminal Law Society is an independent, studentrun organization, which explores current and often controversial topics in criminal law, practice, procedure, and the criminal justice system. Although many of our members do not plan to practice criminal law, we do share a common interest in the state of the law as it affects each of us as individuals.
Environmental Law Project The Environmental Law Society recognizes that a present, acute danger exists to life and the quality of living on the Earth, due to the stresses placed on the ecosystem by man. The group believes that it is everyone's moral obligation to aid in the preservation and enhancement of life for all members of that system. There exists a developed body of law, the aim of which is to protect the environment. It is the group's purpose to: I . provide the Community with legal, scientific, and social information concerning relevant environmental concerns; 2. train members of the Society in environmental advocacy; 3. provide support to lawyers and organizations engaged in environmental litigation.

The Yearbook, CAVEAT EMPTOR, is the newest student publication at New York Law School. In this, our first issue, we have endeavored to portray life at NYLS as best we could in words and pictures. Our efforts were fraught with lost photos, editorial disputes, and deadlines that seemed to come around too quickly. We hope you, the student body, enjoy this issue and we hope those who come after us will continue CAVEAT EMPTOR as a tradition.
The New York Law School R eview is a student-edited general interest law journal that publishes full length articles and book reviews by practitioners and professors of the law as well as student-written notes and case comments.
