1998 1
Dear Third and Fourth Year Students:
I salute you, the New York Law School graduates of 1998. Each of you has demonstrated by your hard work and numerous achievements the talent required to become a first-rate lawyer. But law school graduation is not the end of legal education. It is really only the beginning. You have chosen a profession where the quest for excellence demands life-long study. You have chosen a profession where nothing short of excellence will do. The legal profession's obligation is wisely to order the future with words and to resolve disputes with fairness and efficiency. These obligations impose enormous responsibilities. Society is entitled to insist that they be discharged in a scrupulously ethical fashion. I have confidence that each of you will handle well your share of these responsibilities. And I have confidence that you will have fun doing so. To each of you, my very best wishes. Sincerely,
Dean Harry Wellington 2

MESSAGE FOR NEW YORK LAW SCHOOL YEARBOOK The practice of law in modern times proves that the age of exploration is never over. I say this from personal experience: as I look back over my years in the practice oflaw, I am altogether astonished at the discoveries which have come about as the law has conformed itself to a world that seems to reinvent itself almost overnight. To me the greatest discovery is that it is possible to look backwards into the common law to find answers which settle questions in areas almost unimaginable in earlier times. That is where we can discover the genius of the law.
The old wisdom says that a prophet is not honored in his own land, and that is why some may look upon attorneys as nothing more than hired gun-slingers. Yet in modern times the practice of law demands a continuing growth and vision on the part of an attorney. There will always be a tension between the continuing verities of the common law and the brute logic of the natural world which shows us a bit more of its reality as time passes; and it is the job of the attorney to disGovcr where the new equities lie. Some may not reiish the role of explorer, because the costs in terms of respect by an affected and sometimes frightened or unsettled society are frequently very high. The adage, "No good deed goes unpunished" is only half a joke. So being a good attorney requires the courage to grow and to exercise vision and to explore.
Law school is the starting point.

As a graduate ofNew York Law School and as an active member of the Alumni Association, I am proud of the students who are studying at New York Law School. Having been a judge for approximately 32 years, I have had the opportunity of having the students from New York Law School to intern and clerk for me. I have found them to be always of high caliber, intelligent, and conscientious. The Class of 1998, in my opinion, is outstanding. A number of the 1998 class have interned for me and have shown that they will be capable and able future attorneys. I have spoken to a great many graduates in the Class of 1998 and have had the opportunity to counsel many of them. From the looks of things, if the Class of 1998 is a sample of the students of the future, New York Law School is in very good shape. I am proud to be a graduate ofNew York Law School and of the progress it has made over the years. Dean Wellington has done a magnificent job as Dean of the School. I congratulate him and the students.

Danielle, Looking back from the moment you were born you have given us nothing but pleasure. You've always seemed to set such high goals and expectations for yourself, and as a result, your school years have brought you much success and tremendous amounts of pride for daddy and I. It is an undescribable feeling as your parents to know. You realized you had a dream. You set your sight attaining that dream. You mapped out a plan. You achived your dream. That in fact was our dream for you. Love ya! Mom & Dad P.S. Danny you worked it!
