How do you measure success? It’s a question that those in the nonprofit industry grapple with constantly. How can we effectively demonstrate – and then communicate – the good that is being done? The strength of the industry rests heavily on the answer to this question. However, it also rests on our ability to fully support and encourage those performing the day-to-day tasks that bring about positive change. So it is our honor to shine a light on 40 young professionals whose accomplishments might otherwise be hidden behind the metrics of meals served, grade levels increased, or people housed. Some of our rising stars were born into this work. One honoree immigrated to the United States from Guatemala as a young boy and, inspired by that experience, has gone on to work for one of the city’s leading immigration services nonprofits. Others were drawn to their work after personally experiencing the gross inequities that they now help to correct. Those motivated by a need for personal attention or who are looking for cushy jobs with high salaries are rarely found here in the nonprofit world. The challenges faced are too immediate, desperate and personal. To even begin to address them, you have to corral individuals with expertise in disparate areas ranging from – well, it is evident from our 2015 40 Under 40 class – legal services, social work, public health and education, amongst many concerns. And you must be able to consistently do more with less. More often, the common motivating factor is an internal commitment to a purpose-driven career. It is nonprofit professionals who make us aware of how people on the ground are affected by society’s worst – and best – intentions. Then they innovate, communicate and advocate to set things right. None of the positive outcomes that society relies on nonprofits to provide would be possible without their efforts. And since there aren’t enough platforms dedicated to measuring and acknowledging these individuals’ successes, please join us in celebrating these rising stars. Be inspired by their accomplishments. We are confident that this is just the beginning for all of our esteemed honorees.

Commissioner Steven Banks
6
Mayor Bill de Blasio appointed Steven Banks as Commissioner of the New York City Human Resources/Department of Social Services (HRA) on February 28, 2014, and he has served in that position since April 1, 2014. As Commissioner, Banks serves as chief executive of the largest local social services agency in the country, which serves over three million New Yorkers through the administration of more than 12 major public assistance programs, with 15,000 employees and an operating budget of over $9 billion. Commissioner Banks is a key leader in implementing Mayor de Blasio’s agenda to expand opportunity for more New Yorkers, address income inequality and ensure that New Yorkers receive the benefits and assistance to which they are entitled. Commissioner Banks has dedicated his entire career to improving the lives of low-income New Yorkers and is recognized as one of New York City’s leading public interest lawyers. Throughout his 33 years with the Legal Aid Society, Banks developed an extensive track record of working productively with a unionized workforce and helping the city’s most vulnerable residents – including seniors, survivors of domestic violence, immigrants, and people living with HIV/AIDS – navigate HRA’s programs and services. From 2004 until his appointment, Banks was the Attorney-in-Chief of the Legal Aid Society, the country’s oldest and largest not-for-profit legal services organization. During his tenure, he led the organization through a complete financial and managerial restructuring to save it from bankruptcy in 2004. With an annual budget of $225 million, he managed a staff of 1,900 – including some 1,100 lawyers – and was responsible for all aspects of the legal practice and operations of the organization’s criminal, juvenile rights and civil programs in New York City. Prior to becoming the Attorney-in-Chief, Banks held the positions of Associate Attorney-in-Chief, Deputy Attorney-in-Charge of the Civil Practice, Coordinating Attorney of the Homeless Rights Project and Director of Government Relations for the Civil Practice. He began his career at Legal Aid in 1981 as a Staff Attorney in the organization’s Staten Island Neighborhood Office. He has also previously served as counsel to the Coalition for the Homeless, and he was the lead attorney in major class action litigation requiring the provision of lawful shelter and services to homeless New Yorkers. He is credited with helping reach a landmark settlement with the City in 2008 over its treatment of homeless children and adults, which resulted in the establishment of a permanent enforceable right to shelter for homeless families in New York City. The American Lawyer has listed him as one of the top 45 public interest lawyers in the United States, The Daily News described him as “perhaps the City’s most legendary Legal Aid attorney in this generation,” and New York Magazine called him one of the most influential New Yorkers. Banks graduated from the New York University School of Law in 1981, and from Brown University in 1978.

Mon Yuck Yu Executive Vice President & Chief of Staff Academy of Medical & Public Health Services
42
Social entrepreneur, consultant, teacher and immigrant health advocate – Mon Yuck does it all. As a child of immigrants, Mon Yuck grew up in a low-income household and graduated as a first-generation student with a degree in anthropology from Dartmouth College. The next logical step might have been heading to medical school, but much to her parent’s chagrin, Mon Yuck chose an entirely unconventional path. At age 19, Mon Yuck co-founded the Academy of Medical & Public Health Services (AMPHS), a nonprofit organization based in Sunset Park, Brooklyn that aims to create a local system of making care more accessible to immigrant New Yorkers through culturally-sensitive intervention methods, de-institutionalized healthcare environments and grassroots outreach. “My father passed away from cancer when I was a teenager. He was part of the marginalized segment of the population that had no health insurance or access to care. For the longest time, I thought I wanted to become a doctor, but realized that I would only be solving the exacerbated problem. I wanted to solve the problem at its root – and that only comes through prevention, community awareness and policy change.” After graduation, Mon Yuck became a Richard D. Lombard Fellow, where she spent a year building up AMPHS’ capacity and was then appointed community liaison for New York State Assembly Assistant Speaker Felix W. Ortiz. She has been involved in organizing city-wide emergency planning efforts, localized disease outbreak response initiatives and grassroots outreach campaigns, as well as teaching emergency preparedness courses in CPR, First Aid and Psychological First Aid. Currently, Mon Yuck also runs a consultancy for nonprofit and social enterprises, where she assists with organizational capacity building, while also pursuing an M.P.A. at Columbia University.
