In Iraq the musicians have faced threats of kidnap, violence and even death for playing western music. But that did not put off Paul MacAlindin who will lead youngsters in the creation of Iraq’s first national youth orchestra. He arrived in Iraq to hold a two-week summer school. The project was the brainchild of teenage pianist Zuhal Sultan, who lives in Baghdad, Iraq. Zuhal, 17, is also a member of the senior Iraqi National Symphony Orchestra. The teenager campaigned for the orchestra through the organisation Battlefront and many auditions were carried out over the internet.

CONDUCTOR: Paul MacAlindin has been nominated for an Aberdeen’s Champion award.
Zuhal filmed potential members and then uploaded the video to a site where Paul could see and hear them. Now Paul, 40, who lived in Aberdeen’s West End but is now based in Cologne in Germany, has been nominated for an Aberdeen’s Champion award in the people category. Paul, who began rehearsals on Monday, said: “It is a new experience and the beginning of two weeks which will be very hard work. “But it is fantastic to see it all coming together.”

Paul and the rest of the team have travelled to Iraq to run the summer school. And it is hoped the group of young Iraqi musicians could come over to Aberdeen for the International Youth Festival in the future. cshanks@ajl.co.uk For more on this story, pick up a copy of today’s Evening Express
