Since 1979, the National Youth Orchestras of Scotland has been providing young musicians in Scotland with unforgettable training and performing experiences. Today, NYOS has more opportunities than ever before. Jazz education was first introduced to the ensemble development programme in 1992 to meet the growing demand for high quality training. This has gone from strength to strength and there is now a clear pathway for budding young jazz instrumentalists and vocalists, from early beginnings through to the profession.

Artistic Directors Malcolm Edmonstone Malcolm Edmonstone is amongst the most versatile and in-demand jazz musicians in the country. He is a senior professor at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and co-artistic Director of Jazz for NYOS. His breadth of experience in the fields of jazz education, performance and writing are unrivalled. Early in his professional life Malcolm was called on by Laurie Holloway to cover the piano chair on an international tour with his wife, the late Marion Montgomery. Since then Malcolm has continued to work with Laurie on various projects, including Strictly Come Dancing, when his arrangements were broadcast live to audiences of 10 million. Malcolm has a long lasting association with the Dankworth family, having been appointed Jacqui’s musical director some ten years ago. Throughout that time he has worked extensively as arranger and pianist for numerous tours and recording projects, the most recent of which is the album It Happens Quietly, a collaboration between Jacqui and her late father, the great Sir John Dankworth. Other albums include Back to You and Detour Ahead. He is a member of Mike Walker’s Madhouse band and has been invited to play with legendary jazz musicians Peter Erskine and Dave Liebman. Recent accomplishments include a complete transcription and performance of Donald Fagen’s album The Nightfly (‘a complete triumph….already in contention for a place in my gigs of the year’ – London Jazz), an orchestral commission for the Southbank Sinfonia and an ongoing series of progressive and innovative improvisation-based repertoire for the jazz ensembles of NYOS. Malcolm has recently produced an online course on Jazz Harmony. To find out more please use this web address malcolmedmonstone.com/online-courses-with-malcolm

Your First Step Along the Pathway ALL applicants to the NYOS Jazz Programme in 2015 will be invited to take part in a free interactive group workshop in their chosen location with Artistic Directors, Malcolm Edmonstone and Andrew Bain. Not only will you benefit from learning, refreshing or developing your improvisation, rhythm and harmony skills, this is an ideal opportunity to meet up with like minded young people in your area. In order to ensure you gain the most from the workshop, you will be sent a chart in the appropriate key for your instrument and suggestions for recordings of the piece to listen to. Anyone meeting the eligibility requirements and who wishes to be considered separately for the flagship NYOS Jazz Orchestra should indicate this on the application form and be prepared to stay after the workshop for an individual formal audition. You will be sent a lead sheet to prepare for the audition and will be asked to sight read from a big band chart. The Directors’ Cut As part of NYOS’ aim to provide opportunities for young people to access live performances, Malcolm and Andrew will perform live in each of the workshop locations and we would encourage anyone attending the workshops to come to the gigs!

Eligibility:

Age Approximately: 12-21

Standard: Comfortable on instrument with an enthusiasm for jazz

Dates: July 11-15 at Sabhal Mor Ostaig, Skye The 2015 Jazz Summer School will take place at Sabhal Mor Ostaig, southern Skye, which boasts excellent indoor and outdoor facilities and is at the heart of a supportive and culturally diverse community. A truly inspiring location for a truly inspiring course. Students are grouped in combos with others of a similar experience and standard, to enable their education to be tailored to suit their level. Through a carefully thought out and structured timetable of instrumental, combo, listening and skills sessions, as well as a nightly jazz club, the students have the chance to develop their musical proficiency, including instrumental and improvisation techniques, performance/audience awareness, transcription, learning new repertoire and creating new music. Vocal training In 2014 a vocal combo was added to the Summer School to satisfy the growing demand for high quality vocal training. This ensemble is coached by world-renowned artist, Liane Carroll and benefits from singer-specific improvisation and communication classes plus all the performance opportunities of the Summer School. Jazz Tutors and Ambassadors The tutors on the Summer School come from across the UK and USA, and represent a wealth of styles and experience as professional musicians and educators. The Jazz Ambassadors are young musicians on the cusp of their career as jazz musicians. They have come through the ranks of the NYOS jazz programme themselves and are all at, or have recently graduated from music college. They play an integral part in the teaching during the Summer School and are excellent role models for the younger students, bridging the gap between students and tutors. Not only will you have the chance to work closely with the Tutors and Ambassadors during combo and instrumental sessions, there will also be many opportunities to hear them perform. 8

ACCESS Eligibility: Age Approximately: 12-18

Standard:

Proficient on instrument with some experience of improvising

Dates:

March 20-22 residency at the Aberdeen Jazz Festival July 11-15 Summer School at Sabhal Mor Ostaig, Skye The NYOS Jazz Access courses are a training ground for the next generation of top jazz musicians, giving students the opportunity to refine their improvisation and key solo and ensemble skills, as a step along the pathway to participation in the flagship jazz orchestra. Aspiring students will be identified by the Jazz Artistic Directors during the audition workshops in December, and will then be invited to take part in 2 residential courses; a residency at the Aberdeen Jazz Festival in March and the Summer School in July. These courses provide an opportunity for students to build upon their learning throughout the year, offering opportunities to work in small and large groups and both involve preparation for public performances. Each year NYOS Jazz Access focuses on the music of key jazz albums. Following on from Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue, Dave Brubeck’s Time Out and Miles Davis’ 1964 Complete Concert the next step in key jazz history will be The Weather Report’s eponymous avant-garde debut album.

9

Eligibility: Age Approximately: 14-21

Standard: ABRSM Grade 6 or equivalent and competent improviser (Qualification guide only and not essential)

Dates:

July 10-15 at Sabhal Mor Ostaig, Skye July 15-19 UK tour and recording sessions The flagship NYOS Jazz Orchestra represents the wealth of innovation and skill that Scotland’s talented young jazz musicians possess. Many alumni have gone on to achieve professional status as jazz musicians and all previous winners of the Young Scottish Jazz Musician of the Year have been members of NYJOS. The ensemble has made professional live-gig and studio recordings and has performed in many venues and festivals throughout the UK, and are regular performers at the London, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Shetland Jazz Festivals. During the annual Summer School, the ensemble meets for an intensive rehearsal residency in preparation for its tour to venues across the UK, which follows immediately after the Summer School. A second residential course, with high profile performances is planned for later in the year, subject to confirmation. There will be a separate fee for this course. Throughout its history NYJOS has collaborated with many important figures from the jazz world, either working with them as soloists or commissioning them to produce works for the band. Soloists are chosen because they have an individual voice or sound and are also highly experienced in youth education and composition. 2015 will be no exception as NYOS Jazz Orchestra will be joined on tour by another high profile figure from the world of Jazz. Watch this spce....

10

By offering the opportunity to work intensively with these musicians, as well as the Directors, Malcolm Edmonstone and Andrew Bain, students are given a professional-level experience during NYJOS courses and tours. Many go on to music colleges across the UK and beyond, such is the level of their attainment.
