Interview by Carol Wright | Photographer: Emily SandiferDarby Camp has various interesting projects on her resume, including Gaslit, Big Little Lies, and Clifford. Her next project, The Slumber Party, sees her taking on the lead role of Megan, a cautious girl, afraid to leave her comfort zone. Camp talked to NYOTA about creating a bond with her co-stars and her character's growth throughout the film.
Who are some of your acting inspirations?
I love watching Jennifer Aniston, Margot Robbie, and Amy Adams. They all just seem so relatable and effortlessly perform any role.
What drew you to the film The Slumber Party and made you want to be involved?
I wanted to work on a comedy with an ensemble of kids my own age, so this role was very appealing to me.
The Slumber Party is not only about a sleepover gone wrong but friendships, growing up, and having to deal with life's changes. Do you hope viewers find relatable moments throughout the film?
I do and I think they will. I definitely relate to Megan and the anxiety of fitting in starting high school. Then of course, creating friendships that support you through hard times and challenges.
Did you read the book The Sleepover to prepare?
I did not have the opportunity to read the book prior since I was cast and had to report to set so quickly. I do plan to read it now that the movie is coming out, and hopefully get even more ideas for a sequel
How would you describe your character Megan in three words?
Caring, supportive, and cautious.
Megan grows up in an environment that makes her scared to branch out but after the sleepover she’s forced to get out of her comfort zone. Was it exciting to play someone who you knew would grow as a character throughout the film? Definitely. It was exciting to go through all the physical challenges, especially the events leading up to the dumpster dive!
What did you and your co-stars do off of set to create a bond that translated on screen?
Our awesome director organized some fun activities to help us bond, but to be honest, we quickly got along and started hanging out with each other whenever we had free time.
Do you have any favorite moments from filming?
I enjoyed celebrating Halloween with the cast and director. We all dressed up and had so much fun at a haunted house
What advice do you have for aspiring actors?
Don’t take “no” personally. Keep after your goals and eventually the right part will come to you
