celery or carrot sticks, broccoli and cauliflower. A light dip made with plain yogurt will enhance the flavor. Cut down on sugary beverages, processed meats and high-fat foods. We all like a treat once in awhile, but it is easier to avoid these items if they are not within reach at home. Besides protecting your heart, a proper diet prevents obesity, diabetes, and strokes. For dairy products, it is hard to avoid rich ice creams and high-fat cheeses. Select fat-free milk, low-fat yogurts, and reduced-fat cheese. If you have young children, avoid milk that contains flavorings with added sugars and calories. Over the last 10 years, we eat less meat in our home and eat fish twice a week. Grilled or baked salmon with a bit of lemon juice squeezed on it makes an excellent meal high in antioxidants. Trout and herring are also

Heart disease is the Number 1 killer of Americans. The American Heart Association designates March as National Nutrition Month to remind us to eat healthy. It encourages informed food choices and sound eating and activity. After being cooped up all winter, I’m probably not the only one who’s helped myself to hot cups of cocoa, cookies and cakes. Nearly 83% of cardiovascular disease is preventable by sticking to the right diet and exercise and not smoking. (For more information and recipes, visit heart.org/nutrition.) The next time you shop for groceries, go with fresh fruits and vegetables, fish, and fiber-rich whole grains. Snacks like nuts and salt-free items such as pretzels or popcorn are preferable over other treats. Try “crunchy” snacks to munch, like
good choices. When you cook meat, trim the fat and buy leaner cuts, serving smaller portions than you ate in the past. Add vegetables on your plate to satisfy your appetite. If you must use oils for cooking, baking, or in dressings or spreads, choose the ones lowest in saturated fats, trans fats and cholesterol, including canola oil, corn oil, olive oil, safflower oil, sesame oil, soybean oil and sunflower oil. Choose whole-grain, high-fiber breads, such as whole wheat, oats, oatmeal, whole rye, whole grain corn and buckwheat. Lean toward bread and other food that list whole grains as the first ingredient. Try to cut back on doughnuts, pies, cakes and cookies, replacing them with fat-free or low-fat and low-sodium varieties of crackers, snack chips, cookies and cakes.
