Recently I received a call from my friend, Geri, asking an unusual question. She explained that her grandson in college is studying to be a gym teacher. He told her when he comes home for recess he wants to interview her about her high school gym class. To help with these

All of our gym classes were indoors in a huge gymnasium, even though there were outdoor facilities for both basketball and tennis. The tennis courts were used by girls enrolled in the after school tennis club. Gym classes started with jumping jacks, stretching and running 3 laps around the outer rim of the gym. After laps, sports would begin, which were either basketball or volley ball. There were thick ropes hanging from the ceiling that the teacher would ask the girls to try to climb. I could
never do it, nor could many others. We were not graded on this, only a test to see which girls could do it. My high school had a huge, indoor swimming pool that students could use as a one day alternative to gym class, if they preferred. Some girls avoided swim class because of the short time to dry your hair after the lesson and get to the next class on time. One of my friends took swim class and said they did synchronized swimming and races as the pool converted with divider lanes like the Olympics. We never played softball and thankfully, no dodge ball. Another focus in girls gym was on posture, standing up straight, no “slouching” and to walk tall not meekly and hunched over. The gym teacher stressed “this is a sign of

Most of what you hear from me is about winning in the market space. I trust it is on solid moral grounds that I recommend any action you might take to grow your organizations. By and large, however, this column is about growing something— people, attitudes, initiatives, product and market strength, and the underpinning ethic that informs good citizenship. It is about gain.
