Emily Edgington Andrews unites mid-Missourians of all ages around choral music Plenty of factors keep people at odds, but music is among the few that brings them together. That observation has led Emily Edgington Andrews to unite men and women of all ages and backgrounds, some of whom have never sung a single note, around choral music for the past 12 years. “It is about the people, not the performance” says Andrews, 35, a Columbia resident whose work as artistic director of Choral Arts Alliance of Missouri has grown the organization to include more than 350 singers and 10 choral ensembles. “I use music as a vehicle to bring people together.” Ever since graduating with two music-oriented master’s degrees—one

from Truman State, the other from the University of Missouri—Andrews has made a mark on budding vocal talent in mid-Missouri. She teaches at Columbia Independent School and MU. She also conducts the Columbia Chorale; leads Columbia Youth Choirs (CYC), a youth choir program for students in grades 2 through 12; has served as conductor at Sacred Heart Catholic Church for the past decade; and directs the professional ensemble Prometheus: An American Vocal Concert as assistant conductor. >

Andrews faces a demanding schedule of rehearsals, study sessions, classes and outreach on any given week. It might be daunting to some, but Andrews finds it exhilarating. The mother of two— Braydon, 21 months, and Brynn, 3 months—says her husband, Bryan, has provided an abundance of support to pursue her dreams and goals as a musician.

Baby Brynn

“In a way, I freelance,” she explains. “I have lots of part-time roles. I really enjoy working with so many different types of singers and age levels, and I’m also really passionate about community and the nonprofit sector.”

Turning Point Andrews never expected to begin her career teaching students in middle school and early high school, but the opportunity proved transformative. In her first syllabus, she articulated for students the values she

8

thenewyoumagazine.net SUMMER EDITION 2016

expected them to embrace as musicians. “Kindness, respect and professionalism are the three keys to success I wrote,” Andrews recalls. She knew middle school could be tough developmentally and emotionally for kids, so she made an effort to model those principles. She realized she had made a difference when students wrote letters to her at the end of that first school year expressing their appreciation for her class and for music. One letter from a ninth-grade boy stood out. “He felt so safe in the classroom,” Andrews says. “It was OK for him to express the way he was feeling if he was having a bad day. He didn’t have to have this façade, this wall up. For me, it was really eye-opening the powerful effect music can have on an individual.”

Unity in Diversity An overarching focus on bringing people together to break down barriers and promote social justice has guided Andrews in her career. It’s one of the reasons she is drawn to vocal performance. "Choral music is accessible." Andrews says, "Anyone can participate. It's not something you have to buy, like an instrument. It brings many different people together." She is moved by music that teaches a lesson, such as music written about the Holocaust because of its capacity to teach tolerance against the backdrop of a tragic history of genocide. “How can we help each other remember to be kind to one another, or maybe stand up for those who don’t have a voice?” Andrews asks. She is interested in music from all time periods, noting the text of a piece is what gives it “a true, deeper meaning” and makes it current. She once raised money to host a Truman State special performance by Robert Convery. The New York composer’s nine-part “Songs of Children” guides the listener through a boy’s experience in the Terezin concentration camp using poems written by real children who experienced it. Pieces such as that one underscore the ability of music to cut through the noise of everyday life and create a lasting effect. “Sometimes when you talk to people, they don’t listen,” Andrews says. “It’s a way to command attention in a different way. It’s a way for them to take in without being talked to.” In January this year, Andrews had the opportunity to bring almost a 1,000

people together through a unity concert she organized starting in 2014. The purpose of the concert was to work toward bridging the gap between two cultures, she says. Thematically, she showed this by creating a community gospel choir that sang African American gospel music. She involved Columbia Chorale, which sings music primarily from the Western European choral tradition, used some of the youth from CYC and brought the various groups together. It just so happened the university experienced tension this fall, she says, making the concert even timelier. "We had almost 1,000 people involved—singing and in the audience— on the night of the concert,” Andrews recalls. “It was an incredibly powerful event to show that love, kindness and cohesion will ultimately help to overcome prejudice and hate."

Kindness, respect and professionalism are the three keys to success

A Place of Change Andrews plans to continue her career working alongside other musicians and community members to transform Columbia and the surrounding area into a place where people of all ages and experience levels can come together to sing. “I have a vision that we can continue making a positive impact on our community by creating a culture of choral music that rivals that of any metropolitan area,” she says. “By working side-byside with both arts and non-arts groups in the community, there is potential for reaching countless individuals. To me, being a part of this is exciting and humbling.”

COUG AR W OMEN

▲ Single and over 50?

Here are 4 reasons younger men think you’re hot! 12

thenewyoumagazine.net SUMMER EDITION 2016

With age comes confidence

By the time you reach 50, you know yourself pretty well. That means you have more selfconfidence which is very attractive to all men. A confident woman isn’t clingy, needy or desperate. She has her own life and is more likely to not need as much attention from a man — cougars are attractive for this very reason. You are just easier to spend time with and a lot less demanding than younger women.

Older women are looking younger than ever

You look younger and hotter than ever. Have you been to a class reunion lately? The women look fantastic. Women are taking better care of themselves and doing more to stay young looking. And compared to men, women have so much more to rely on with good skin care, exercise, the right clothing, hair and makeup and maybe a little Botox. All this gives you a younger appearance than ever and certainly younger than previous generations at the same age. Some experts are claiming 50 is the new 30 – imagine that!

There’s no “ticking”

Once you move into your 50s, you are usually beyond the childbearing phase. The female biological clock has stopped that super loud ticking that you may have heard in your late 30s and into your early 40s. This can be a huge relief to some young men who don’t want to get tied down by younger women who want to start a family.

These men are open to relationships, they just don't want that long-term commitment and family responsibility. So you offer him a great opportunity for companionship and romance without the pressure of wanting to get married.

You’re realistic

At 50, you are savvy about how the world works. That means you know that dating a younger man may be a heck of a lot of fun, but also might not lead to anything deeper or more serious. That is fine by you. You don’t mind a little romantic distraction and feel flattered and enlivened by a younger man's attention. Yet, you recognize that your relationship is not as likely to last long-term.

The good news about this fact is that you can relax, go with the flow and just enjoy it. And when the interaction with your younger man stops being fun, you are more likely to simply let go and move on. Being savvy to the ways of men and how life works keeps you on an even keel and realistic about what you are doing. That freedom can open doors for you to have more excitement and fun than you ever imagined possible.

BEAUTY

tylish

While there is no universal code that all stylish women adhere to, there are a few habits that aid in crafting a good outfit every single day. From checking the weather to selecting the right undergarments, here are the quick daily routines that keep the best-dressed women on top of their style game.

14

thenewyoumagazine.net SUMMER EDITION 2016

They keep their closet organized

They own a steamer

Hanging up, folding and putting away your clothes instead of throwing them around your room will speed up the process of selecting your outfit and help you edit your look and see exactly what pieces you're working with.

Wrinkled clothes look cheap. Using a steamer instead of an iron works better on most pieces. Plus, it’s more controllable for even the trickiest of silhouettes and fabrics.

They select the right undergarments They check the weather every morning Make Weather Channel app your best friend. You can be wearing the greatest outfit ever, but if it's not fit for the temperature or rain, then it's not a good look on anyone, i.e. suede shoes in the middle of a torrential downpour or layer upon layer on a day that turns out to be 80 degrees.

They plan their outfits out ahead of time While it’s not always ideal to select your outfit the night before, giving yourself adequate time to plan almost always ensures a more put-together look than something you throw on as you're running out the door.

Exposed bra straps may have worked on Carrie Bradshaw, but in real life, the look is a no-go. Visible panty lines and ill-fitting bras will distract and divert attention from even the most put-together outfits.

They have a go-to uniform always ready for back up Hone in on a signature look that you can always rely on. Whether it’s jeans and a blazer or head-to-toe black, find a style and make it yours. It will come in handy on those days where you have “nothing to wear.”

They shop everywhere

How many mornings each week do you find yourself pressing the snooze button? Those extra Zs don’t do much to help you in your quest for fashionability; hopping right out of bed will give you all the time you need to put on your outfit, spruce up your hair, swipe on some make-up and even add an accessory or two to polish off your look.

You might think that a well-dressed woman is only wearing designer labels, but that’s usually not the case…unless she’s a celebrity. Otherwise, the stylish women you see on the streets often piece piece together outfits from all kinds of places: department stores, discount retailers, chain stores at the mall, vintage and consignment shops, and, yes, of course, designer boutiques. Don’t limit yourself to the latter if you want the same effortless style!

They mix high and low fashion

They don’t overdo it

They listen to their alarms

You don’t need to wear head-to-toe designer to put together a good look. Know when to mix and match both high and low fashion. Invest in a few classic pieces and find your trendier pieces at a lower price point.

They only wear clothes that fit properly Squeezing into a pair of too-tight jeans is not a good look on anybody. Buy the right size for your body and always have a tailor on speed dial to tweak your pieces for the perfect fit.

Fashionistas have an enviable ability to layer accessories to spruce up any outfit, but proceed with caution: too many accessories can make your otherwise fashion-forward outfit look a bit forced. Avoid overdoing it by wearing a single statement piece, such as a bauble necklace or a brightly patterned scarf. Let hems, necklines and sleeve lengths decide which accessories best accentuate the outfit you’ve choosen.

othing like a little pooch to make you selfconscious (and after a summer full of margaritas and barbecues, we’re all feeling a little pooch these days). But with some styling magic, you can conceal that muffin top. Here are five ways to do it.

Pick the Right Jeans Look for a midrise jean that hits right at your belly button. This is the ideal waist height—too high and you get the dreadful “Soccer Mom” effect, too low and you’re lettin’ it all hang out.

Play with Proportions Choose a top or blouse that hits below or at the hips so your legs look slimmer and your tummy is covered. Bonus points for fabrics with movement, like chiffons, which are forgiving, not clingy.

Invest in a Blazer A tailored, fitted style or a boyfriend-style blazer both work. And get it sized so it looks great in the shoulders. Both will cover a pooch.

> >

Consider Undergarments Slimming ones really do work. Get a Spanx camisole, panties or other styles that’ll flatten your tummy. Instant confidence!

Empire Waist As in empire waistlines! These will create a high waist to conceal the parts you’re worried about. Peplum styles are particularly flirty and fun.

HEALTH & F ITNESS

How Yoga Helps to Keep Your

Brain Healthy By Abigail Wise

We’ve long known that yoga offers a host of physical benefits, including increased flexibility, a healthier weight and possibly even stronger bones. But many yogis also practice for the less visual effects of the exercise. Yoga holds the power to transform our minds as much as it does our bodies. Here, some of the mental benefits of yoga.

20

thenewyoumagazine.net SUMMER EDITION 2016

Yoga may help those with bipolar disorder. New Research published in The Journal of Psychiatric Practice suggests that yoga could help people manage bipolar disorder. The survey asked a group of more than 100 people with the mental disorder, who also practice yoga, to rank how the practice affects their lives. Many deemed it beneficial to mental health, and one in five called yoga “life-changing.” While it’s important to emphasize that this was a self-reported survey, it’s possible that the sense of Zen yogis tout could do a lot of good for those living with bipolar disorder.

It's a serious stress-buster. Those with bipolar disorder aren’t the only ones who can reap the benefits of yoga. The Mayo Clinic boasts yoga's power to fight stress and improve moods for all. And the practice can offer a moment to escape from our busy lives. Research shows that mindfulness-based stress reduction, like that at yoga’s core, can help lower anxiety and stress. In a study at the University of California, Los Angeles, participants who practiced yoga for just 12 minutes every day for eight weeks showed a decrease in their immune systems’ inflammation response. When we’re overstressed, our bodies lose the ability to regulate our inflammatory response, which can lead to a long list of health problems, including a greater risk of depression. By lowering our stress levels, we can also lower the risk of depression.

Yoga boosts brainpower. Not only do poses like downward dogs relax and de-stress, but they may actually increase brain function. A short, 20-minute session of Hatha yoga might improve focus and information retention, according to the University of Illinois. So the next time your head’s feeling foggy, consider ditching the energy drink and opting for some time on the mat instead.

It can increase happiness. Ever notice how strong, centered and happy you feel after a yoga session? It turns out it’s not all in your head. Research shows that the simple act of living in the moment boosts moods. On average, we spend almost half of our time planning ahead or contemplating the past, and staying in the present is often easier said than done. But yoga helps us focus on the present by providing both physical and mental exercises. That’s why yoga instructors often encourage reflection and living in the moment during class, rather than simply running through the poses. Yoga’s mental aspect brings a whole new meaning to the phrase “blissing out.”

HEALTH & FITNESS

30-Day Plank

Challenge P

lanks are one of the most effective exercises you can do. Why? Because they require a small time investment on your part, and offer the chance to achieve substantial results in a relatively short span of time.

If you've never done a plank, it might look easy. In fact, you might think it's too easy to enjoy improved muscle tone and stronger abdominal muscles. But looks are deceiving. Holding a plank position requires strength, stability and endurance in your core muscles. If you perform this simple yet effective exercise daily, you may experience changes to your abs, back and glutes you didn't expect. When you incorporate a few variations to the position, you'll discover muscles in your back and abdominals you'd forgotten were there. Activating and strengthening your core muscles gives you an added advantage as you age. The exercise has gained increasing popularity with fitness trainers for good reason. It just works.

Your Basic Plank Position: All About the Rules of Posture The plank exercise is done in a push-up, or modified push-up, position. The essential piece of the puzzle is how you maintain the position of your back and lower body in straight alignment. The rules of posture during a plank are: Shoulder, buttocks and legs in a straight line

Buttocks not higher or lower than your back

Head in neutral position looking approximately 8 to 12 inches in front of you

Abdominal and gluteal muscles tight

Shoulder blades pulled down

Lower back in neutral position without excess or reduced lower back curvature

Planks are done on the floor, on your forearms, with your elbows shoulder-width apart. You are on your toes, with your back straight, your abdominal and buttock muscles tight. You will look like you're doing a push-up. 24

thenewyoumagazine.net SUMMER EDITION 2016

6 Benefits to the Plank Position The plank is more efficient that doing crunches. During crunches you are working just the abdominal muscles responsible for flexion and not the oblique muscles or those controlling your back. There are six specific benefits to using the plank position and the variations described below.

1. Tight Abs Planks lay the groundwork for tight abdominal muscles so you look better in your clothes and your bathing suit. To get those ripped six-pack abs you also need to shed the layer of fat over the muscle. However, you don't need to shed the fat to enjoy the rest of these benefits.

2. Strong Core Strong muscles more easily defend your abdominal organs and help you to breathe easier. Your diaphragm is located just under your rib cage. You pull the diaphragm down with your abdominal muscles, which creates negative pressure in your lungs and draws air in. Breath control is one method of reducing your stress level and decreasing the stress hormones your body may secrete. The benefits of stress reduction range from better heart health to improved work performance and better-quality sleep.

3. Back Support Strengthening your back muscles reduces the likelihood of a back strain or back injury. Between 60 percent to 80 percent of people living in the U.S. will suffer from low back pain at some point in their life. It is the second most common reason people go to the doctor. Developing a strong core may protect your back from injury and pain.

4. Balance and Posture Good balance and posture are important to your overall health and wellness. Balance helps you control and maintain your body position when you're sitting, standing and moving. Good posture reduces upper back pain and overstretched muscles from rounded shoulders and slumping forward.

5. Improved Performance A strong core will improve your athletic performance and your ability to do your daily tasks. When you do planks regularly, you'll likely find it's easier to move through your day without stress or pain.

6. Improved Mental Strength and Mood Maintaining a plank position for two to three minutes requires both physical and mental strength. However, you don't start by holding the plank for three minutes! As you work your way through the 30-day plank challenge, you'll overcome mental and physical challenges to maintain the position, but at a rate you can handle. With each small hurdle you overcome, you may develop greater mental strength and can use the knowledge of your victories to overcome other challenges in your day. Exercise and strength training also elevate your mood and help you to experience more joy each day.

Take Your 30-Day Plank Challenge Planks are deceptively difficult but produce consistent and valuable results for your health. If you don’t exercise regularly and try to start with intermediate planks, you may find them too difficult and stop the process. Instead, try this 30-day plank challenge to reach your goal of holding a plank for three minutes. This calendar was created by celebrity trainer Anna Kaiser, founder of AKT InMotion studio in New York City. Quoted in Yahoo Beauty, Kaiser says, “The hardest part about planking is committing — holding still until the end.” This program starts with incline planks against the wall. If the first day is too easy move to the floor and use the beginner plank position on your knees. Standard plank position is bearing weight on your toes with your knees straight.

Myths

Ten Most Common

When Buying and Selling a Home by Wanda Northway

Buying or selling a house is not something most of us do every day. You may do it once a decade, or even once in a lifetime. Despite the fact that most of us enter the world of real estate only rarely, we may think we know how it works, based on the experiences of friends and family members, stories we have heard and things we have read. But for everything we believe we know about the industry, there are a number of myths that circulate about how real estate actually works. Buying into those can hurt your chances of buying or selling the right home at the right price. In recent years, technology has radically changed the way homes are bought and sold, and yet some aspects of real estate are the same as they were when your parents bought their last home. If a long time has passed since your last transaction, you may be surprised at how much has changed.

The Internet has made much more information available to consumers, but not all the information is equal, or even accurate. The danger with believing everything you hear or read is real estate myths can cost you money when it's time to buy or sell a home. Here are TEN of the most common myths that can trip up buyers and sellers: SET YOUR HOME PRICE HIGHER THAN YOU EXPECT TO GET. Listing your home at too high a price may actually net you a lower price. That's because shoppers and their real estate agents often don't even look at homes that are priced above market value. It's true you can always lower the price if the house doesn't garner any offers in the first few weeks. But that comes with its own set of problems. "Buyers are highly suspicious of houses that have sat on the market for more than three weeks," says Nela Richardson, chief economist for the brokerage Redfin. In areas such as San Francisco where multiple offers are common, sellers will actually price their homes for less than they expect to get, in the hopes of getting multiple offers above asking price. However, if you do this in a declining market, the danger is that all the offers will come in at the asking price or lower. PASS ON THE FIRST OFFER & WAIT FOR SOMETHING BETTER. When the first offer comes in and it’s below asking price, many sellers make the mistake of passing in the hopes that they can land a better offer later. The problem is, the first offer is sometimes the only offer and weeks later the homeowners are kicking themselves for their mistake. If a home stays on the market for more than a month or two, buyers start to sense weakness. As those “days on market” numbers tick up, buyers will make increasingly stingy offers, betting on the possibility that you might be desperate to sell. Take every offer seriously and don’t reject the first one assuming something better will come down the road.

YOU CAN GET A BETTER DEAL AS A BUYER IF YOU DO NOT USE A REAL ESTATE AGENT. That's a completely false premise. If the house is listed with a real estate agent, the total sales commission is built into the price. If the buyers don't have an agent, the seller's agent will receive the entire commission. YOU CAN SAVE MONEY SELLING YOUR HOME YOURSELF. Some people do successfully sell homes on their own, but they need the skills to get the home listed online, market the home to prospective buyers, negotiate the contract and then deal with any issues that arise during the inspection or loan application phases. It's not impossible to sell a home on your own, but you'll find that buyers expect a substantial discount when you do, so what you save on a real estate commission may end up meaning a lower price. It's not impossible to sell your home on your own for the same price you'd get with an agent, but it's not easy. THE MARKET WILL ONLY GO UP. In recent years, homebuyers and sellers have experienced a time of increasing home values, then a sharp decline during the economic downturn and now another period of increasing values. They think that the market only goes up, they do not think about when a correction will come. The recent recession should have reminded everyone that real estate prices can indeed fall, and fall a lot. YOU SHOULD RENOVATE YOUR KITCHEN & BATHROOM BEFORE YOU SELL. If your kitchen and baths work, a major remodel could backfire. Prospective buyers may not share your taste, but they don't want to redo something that has just been renovated. You're better off adjusting your price, most buyers want to put their own spin on things.

conditioning system or roof, you will sell your house more quickly, but you probably won't recoup what you spent. According to Remodeling magazine's 2015 Cost vs. Value Report, the only renovation that is likely to net you as much as you spent is a new front door. You're likely to recoup only 67.8 percent of what you spent on a major kitchen remodel and 70 percent of what you spent on a bathroom remodel on a mid-range home. "Very few things will bring you great returns," says Sabrina Booth, an agent with Redfin in Seattle. "If you're going to do these projects, it's better to do them for your own enjoyment." ALL THE PROPERTIES LISTED IN THE MULTIPLE LISTING SERVICE SHOW UP ONLINE. Your agent must choose to let the listings show up online. Most do, but it never hurts to verify that yours will. AN OPEN HOUSE WILL SELL YOUR PROPERTY. Homes rarely sell to buyers who visited them during an open house. Agents like open houses because it enables them to find additional customers who are looking to buy or sell homes. If you or your agent choose not to have an open house, it probably doesn't hurt your sale chances – although holding a broker's open house for other agents may be worthwhile. THE AGENT WHO SHOWS YOU HOMES OR LISTS. YOUR HOME REPRESENTS YOUR INTEREST. Maybe and maybe not. In about half the states in the U.S., agents may be "transaction brokers" who don't have a fiduciary duty to either the buyer or seller. In many states, a customer has the option of signing an agreement for the agent to represent him. Most brokerages require buyers and sellers to sign a form indicating that they understand whom the agent represents.

FINANCIAL HEALTH

Are you on the road to financial independence? ANSWER THESE SEVEN QUESTIONS TO HELP YOU FIND OUT

Do you check your credit report at least twice a year? The information in your credit report impacts loan applications, interest rates, and even your job search. Make it a habit to keep a close eye on yours.

Is your FICO credit score higher than 699? Get it above 700 to nab the best loan terms; that can save you thousands over time.

Do you have a living revocable trust, will, advance directive, and a durable power of attorney for healthcare? If you want your family to have the easiest possible time managing your affairs, you will have these essential estate planning documents in place.

Do you use overdraft protection on your checking account? Don't rely on this expensive backup. Instead, keep a balanced checkbook so you always know exactly what's in your account.

Do you know what your monthly expenses are, without guessing? Knowing what's really going on will help you see where you can trim your spending to boost your savings.

When the market falls, is your first impulse to sell your investments to avoid losing money? You need to follow a well-thought-out investment plan that focuses on your long-term goals. That means not panicking or overreacting to short-term swings.

Is it true that a 65-year-old woman today has a 50-50 chance of living to age 85? You bet it is. Which is why you must make financial decisions today that will allow you to live comfortably well into your 80s. Maybe that means working longer before you retire, working part-time in retirement, or considering waiting longer to collect Social Security (every year you delay between ages 62 and 70 entitles you to a larger benefit). If you found yourself on the right side of these questions, congrats: you have a strong sense of what it takes to build financial security. But if this information has shown you that you still have work to do, I hope it will motivate you to change your habits and become more informed. With some research and a little resolve, there's nothing on this list you can't master.

7 Best Foods for Rapid So you need to lose weight — fast! Wouldn’t it be great if life came with a magic remote control that made the bad parts speed up and the good parts slow down? You could hit FF at the beginning of every workday, and RWD at the end of awesome date. All the vacations, holidays and parties could move at the pace of a Kenny G song, and all the endless conference calls could spin by faster than Nicki Minaj’s hairstyles. I And right up there on the FF list — weight loss. Sure, slow and steady may win the race, but who wants to plod along like a tortoise, especially when a warm weather getaway is right around the corner? Add these seven super weight loss foods to your day, compliments of the Rapid Flat Belly Plan, to get your weight-loss goals on hyperspeed. All of them have been scientifically proven to fry flab in six weeks or less! I Tighten your seatbelt — in fact, you’ll soon be tightening every belt!

Green Tea If you’re not drinking green tea with your workouts, you might be wasting your time at that barre class. A study published in The Journal of Nutrition found that after just two weeks, exercisers who sipped four to five cups of green tea each day and logged 25-minutes at the gym lost more belly fat than their non-tea-drinking counterparts. What makes the drink so powerful? It contains catechins, an antioxidant that hinders the storage of belly fat and aids rapid weight loss.

Almonds Think of each almond as a natural weight-loss pill. A study of overweight and obese adults found that, combined with a calorie-restricted diet, consuming a little more than a quarter cup of the nuts can decrease weight more effectively than a snack comprised of complex carbohydrates and safflower oil—after just two weeks! (And after 24 weeks, those who ate the nuts experienced a 62% greater reduction in weight and BMI!) For optimal results, eat your daily serving before you hit the gym. A study printed in The Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition found that almonds, rich in the amino acid L-arginine, can actually help you burn more fat and carbs during workouts.

Pistachios Stephen Colbert may be on to something. UCLA Center for Human Nutrition researchers divided study participants into two groups, each of which were fed a nearly identical low-calorie diet for 12-weeks. The only difference between the groups was what they were given to eat as an afternoon snack. One group ate 220-calories of pretzels while the other group munched on 240-calories worth of pistachios. Just four weeks into the study, the pistachio group had reduced their BMI by a point, while the pretzel-eating group stayed the same, and their cholesterol and triglyceride levels showed improvements as well.

Avocado Oil What if we told you that you could make 20 percent of your belly disappear this year — poof, just gone? Penn State University researchers compared those who consumed avocado oil with those who consumed a flax-safflower oil blend. Those on the avocado oil diet — just three tablespoons daily did the trick — lost nearly 2 percent of their belly fat in just one month.

Weight Loss Legumes It’s time to focus on your lentil health. In one four-week Spanish study, researchers found that eating a calorie-restricted diet that includes four weekly servings of legumes aids weight loss more effectively than an equivalent diet that doesn’t include beans. Those who consumed the legume-rich diet also saw improvements in their “bad” LDL cholesterol levels and systolic bloodpressure. To reap the benefits at home, work lentils, chickpeas, peas and beans into your diet throughout the week.

Vitamin D-Fortified Yogurt How would you like to take all the great weight-loss results you’ve just read about — and double them? That’s what happens when you supplement your diet with a combination of vitamin D and calcium, according to a Nutrition Journal study. Just four weeks into the 12-week experiment, subjects who had taken these two nutrients — found in abundance in some yogurts—lost two times more fat than the other group!

Grapefruit Like a marathoner stretching before the big run, eating half a grapefruit before a meal can enhance your body’s fat-burning performance. A study published in the journal Metabolism found that this “warm-up” tactic can help whittle your middle — by up to an inch — in just six weeks! The scientists attribute the powerful effects to the grapefruits’ fat-zapping phytochemicals. The fruit can interact negatively with certain medications, so as long as you get the green-light from your M.D, plan to have half of a grapefruit before your morning meal and add a few segments to your starter salads to reap the benefits.

MEN’S VIEW

13 Things We men are complex creatures, and we’ll admit that we can be a bit of trouble sometimes, especially when it comes to communicating what we really want. Whether it’s fear of rejection, fear of compromising our masculinity, or fear of butting up against cultural norms, we often keep our true thoughts to ourselves. It’s a shame too because then we leave it up to Hollywood and magazines to tell women what we’re thinking. In order to solve all that, take a look at the biggest things men think about women but never say:

Men

1. Please order dessert There are so many mind games that are hidden within a seemingly meaningless decision like ordering dessert. An “I’m full, none for me” after I just saw you push your salad around with your fork shows that the relationship is predicated on performance. Buying into the idea that you have to be a dainty feather isn’t sexy because it means you’re not comfortable with who you are or whom you are with. If the real you really has a stomach the size of a bird’s, then fine, but if not, then please skip the psychological jockeying and adherence to cultural norms, be the real you, and order up a brownie sundae. As with orgasms and suntans, fake isn’t sexy.

2. Make the first move (or at least give us the confidence to do it ourselves) Even the manliest of dudes don’t like to face rejection and get their feelings hurt. We’re probably all for trying to pick you up, but give us a hint that we may have a shot before we dive in. If you’re not going to initiate an interaction then maybe open your body posture, touch us on the arm, or shoot us a warm smile — just give us an excuse, any excuse, to think we won’t be humiliated if we make a move, and we’ll be happy to strike up a conversation. We can see where things go from there, but there’s got to be somewhere to start.

3. You can be the boss in the bedroom Traditional gender roles are cool and all, but, sometimes, it’s nice to have the woman take charge. I don’t need to be thrown on the floor, blindfolded or choked to get excited (if you do, then more power to you), but give us a few directions and tell us what exactly it is that’ll make you happy. If the guy seems stressed out it’s probably because he’s nervous he won’t please you. So, weird as it may sound, if you take control once in a while, it can be just what he needs to loosen up a little.

38

thenewyoumagazine.net SUMMER EDITION 2016

Between magazines,

romantic comedies, and generally baseless cultural assumptions, women have long been guessing what men are really thinking. His feet are slanted towards you at a 15-degree angle? Then he’s in love. 30-degree angle? He wants nothing to do with you. Then there are the totally speculative “what he really wants” sex tips like this real “tip” from a “real” guy in Cosmopolitan: “‘We need you to get a little rough and grab on to it like you’re milking a cow. You may think you’re hurting him, but I guarantee if you ask, he’d request more,’ says Steven, 23.” Why is 23-year-old Steven trying to cause us men so much pain? And aren’t we all smart enough to know that 23-year-old Steven is probably a 30-year-old female staff writer who’s just throwing down some ideas to make deadline?

Think About Women But Never Say 4. You’re beautiful, stop complaining

7. Know how to order a drink

We probably wouldn’t be with you if we thought you were unattractive. Men are immensely visual creatures, and, shallow as it may sound, looks always play some part in the equation. The thing is though, we have all sorts of preferences about female body type. Some like the fit but womanly Jennifer Lawrence look, others prefer the athletic, Cameron Diaz type, and some are into super skinny women like Zoe Saldana or fullerfigured ladies like Melissa McCarthy. So don’t stress. We think you’re hot. That’s why we’re with you. If you want to change something about you, go for it, but do it for you not for us. If your boyfriend or crush or whomever does give you a hard time, you might rethink that relationship before rethinking your body.

An “ummm…a martini please?” versus an “I’ll take a perfect Maker’s Manhattan up sans cherry” is the difference between cluelessness and a confident woman who knows what she wants. Banal as it may seem, this dichotomy translates into character traits far more important than alcohol preference. Even if it’s totally not the case and you’re simply not much of a drinker, if you’re bumbling, unconfident, and indirect in one situation, there’s a high probability these traits will reveal themselves in other instances.

5. Elegant dress trumps skimpy dress An elegant outfit that makes you look like an A-list actress, be it Brigitte Bardot or Emma Watson, plays to our desire for success, grown-up-ness, and classical beauty. Just as you appreciate the rippling muscles of Channing Tatum in a three-piece suit, so too we want to feel like we’re walking down the red carpet with someone who cared enough to put on grandma’s pearls, touch up her makeup, and take the time to find that perfect dress. With the elegant look down, then dinner and drinks turns into a first-class date. The usual, low-cut party dress is fine, but an elegant outfit means we’re dealing with not a girl, but a woman.

6. A compliment (or two) doesn’t hurt It goes against the notion that men don’t need their feelings coddled, but a quick compliment goes a long way in boosting our confidence. It doesn’t have to be verbal either. A bicep squeeze, a longing stare, even a fullon, up-and-down check out will be taken as a compliment. In this instance, we’re all for being objectified.

8. We like the chase — but if you like us, don’t make it impossible Don’t call me Ethan Hunt because a “Mission Impossible” isn’t a fun adventure. It’s frustrating, depressing, and eventually we’ll give up.

9. Just be confident — looks matter, but not that much If we’re going to start believing the beauty magazines, we might as well borrow this statistic: Glamour claims, “78% of men would rather date a confident plus-size woman than an insecure supermodel.” Every man wants to be with a beautiful woman. It’s just that if she’s a bundle of insecurities wrapped in some aesthetic appeal, that beauty seems to wane. It’s an odd occurrence, but personality and confidence make a woman physically sexier. The way we perceive women is generally how they perceive themselves. Lots of confidence? Très sexy. Lots of complaining and fishing for validation? Not so much.

10. You’re probably attracted to me According to a recent study by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, as men become tired they begin to overestimate a woman’s sexual interest in him. So if the feeling isn’t mutual, let us down firmly but nicely (on a

pillow preferably). While we can be obnoxiously overconfident, sometimes it’s literally brain chemistry.

11. Going natural implies trust A woman wearing no makeup is often eons sexier than one with too much. Wearing a little can be quite nice and if it gives you confidence then go on ahead. Yet the vulnerability and trust that going natural implies when you’re one-on-one is enough to make most guys’ hearts jump.

12. You don’t have to watch “the game”/drink beer/play HALO Somehow, a woman who loves sports and can rack up a kill streak on HALO became a part of the Manic Pixie Dream Girl ideal. (Maybe it was Drew Barrymore in Fever Pitch? Damn you Drew!) Whatever the reason, there’s no need to lounge in your t-shirt or grab a spot in front of the flat screen before the game if you’re not really into it. Doing what you want is most important. If you genuinely embody a more “classic” femininity as a woman — one who abhors video games and loves to shop — do that. We have our guy friends for the other stuff.

13. No need to play a type It’s normal to try to put on your best face in front of others, especially in the early stages of a relationship. But wearing a mask too often can make it impossible to take off, and the only way a relationship will last is if you are the real you. If you’re an aspiring screenwriter who always has her head in books but likes to go out and play tennis from time to time, do that. No need to act like you love photography or are fashion-obsessed. Whoever you are told you should be as a woman probably isn’t the person you should actually be. There’s nothing more attractive than a woman who creates her own type. A woman who’s one-of-a-kind.

The Unstoppable Molly Deimeke P I N K PA G E S

How she overcame a traumatic brain injury

H

air stylist Molly Deimeke was ecstatic in February 2015 when she passed a certified educator test for John Paul Mitchell Systems. Although she has aced the yearly certification exam many times, the 2015 test marked a milestone because it was her first test after a traumatic brain injury in May 2014.

“I lost my ability to read,” Deimeke said. “I had to start over, at the kindergarten level. The test was harder for me than it’s ever been. Before the accident, I would cram a week before. This time, I studied every day, beginning in December and all the way through January.”

Kristel Kronk, MS, CCC-SLP, speech language pathologist at Mizzou Therapy Services, helped Deimeke, 32, of Martinsburg, Missouri, regain her ability to read and speak coherently. It took a team of experts in speech therapy, physical therapy and occupational therapy to help Deimeke recover motor skills and cognitive function that she took for granted before her accident. Deimeke attended appointments twice weekly for four months before her physician cleared her to drive again. She then returned to styling hair and teaching other hair stylists. “Speech therapy was the hardest for me,” Deimeke said. “Physical therapy was the easiest for me because I enjoyed it but balance was the hard part.”

Becky Edwards, MPT, MHA, clinical supervisor and Rock Steady Boxing Coach of7Mizzou Therapy Services-Business Loop, said difficulty with balance is a common problem for those who have sustained a traumatic brain injury or have been diagnosed with a neurological condition such as Parkinson’s disease or multiple sclerosis. “When you hit your head, it can cause damage to the inner ear and affect your balance, known as vestibular dysfunction,” Edwards said.

A self-described risk taker who loves to travel, Deimeke was overseas in Laos when she fell off a double-decker truck serving as a taxi. She fell approximately 10 feet onto the street and then rolled 20 feet down a hill, witnesses later told her. Deimeke injured the left temporal lobe, which controls language and memory.

Deimeke doesn’t remember her injury or much of her early treatment, which included surgery in Thailand to stop her brain bleed and a long hospital stay in St. Louis before returning to her family home in Martinsburg, Missouri. Deimeke does recall, however, all of her experiences in Columbia at Mizzou Therapy Services and the7 Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Clinic7 with her physician,7Peter Hwang, MD. “If I wouldn’t have done the therapy, I would have stayed in a weird childhood place,” she said. “I didn’t know at that time I had to go through all of these steps to heal me but they guided me through the steps I needed to take here.”

P I N K PA G E S Deimeke joined a7 support group for brain injury survivors7 and said it helped her move forward. At a support group meeting, she became fast friends with the group’s facilitator, Dina McPherson, a fellow brain injury survivor. They chat like old high school friends about their lingering TBI effects, such as losing their sense of smell and tricks to spice up foods since their sense of taste is diminished.

“You never heal 100 percent from a brain injury,” McPherson said. “People learn to adjust as best they can, but both the brain and the person will never be exactly as they were before the injury.” Deimeke said she is grateful to be alive and is thankful for her outstanding rehabilitation care and ongoing support through the brain injury support group. “Hearing someone else has struggled with something that you are struggling with really helps you to see that you are not alone and gives you

42

hope,” Deimeke said. “Now I want to teach other people by telling my story.”

It’s been two years since the accident, which led to brain surgery, six weeks of in-patient hospital care, four months of outpatient physical, occupational and speech therapy and two years of natural brain healing, but Deimeke’s dedication and hard work never wavered.

Investigates, through a team effort, concerns initiated by the public about perceived high rates of cancer in a community or neighborhood. Informs public that cancer is more common than most people realize; contrary to public perception, cancer is not usually caused by pollution or other environmental factors; and most of the causes of cancer that we know about are related to lifestyle.

LBBC offers educational information to women affected by breast cancer. Programs include conferences, teleconferences, newsletters, Survivors' Help Line (888-753-LBBC), website (lbbc.org), young survivors' and outreach programs.

Dr. Rodriguez and H.O.P.E.

Bring Patients New Option in Joint Replacement r. Rudy Rodriguez became a welcome addition to the medical community at Missouri Delta Medical Center in 2013, bringing his orthopedic expertise and years of training and education in New York, Connecticut and Minnesota to the patients of Southeast Missouri. Now, he also offers his patients the benefit of joint replacement surgery with a state-of-the-art roboticarm assisted system.

This surgeon-controlled robotic technology, called the Mako Robotic-Arm Assisted Surgery System, is more precise in the placement of joint components, which can increase the life of the replacement joint, according to Dr. Rodriguez. And, the incision necessary to complete the replacement surgery is smaller, which reduces recovery time.

“This robotic-arm system allows us to be more precise than ever before,” Dr. Rodriquez says. “Instead of 46

thenewyoumagazine.net SUMMER EDITION 2016

using an anatomical landmark to place the component, we use a three-dimensional image from a CT and the robotic system shows us where the cuts need to be made and where the component should be placed.”

Dr. Rodriguez says that when he compares a pre-operative image created by the Mako Robotic-Arm System and a postoperative image of the patient’s new joint, the two are almost an exact match. “It’s that accurate,” he says.

Currently, the system can be used for hip replacements and for partial knee replacements, giving patients needing these procedures hope for shortened recovery time and improved joint longevity. That hope is what inspired a group of

elementary school students to name the robot.

The hospital recently held a contest seeking names for the “robot” and the students at St. Francis Xavier School won with their suggestion of “HOPE” (Helping Other People Electronically). Dr. Rodriguez says he wasn’t part of the selection committee, but he thinks the name is appropriate.

“This system helps the surgeon put the component in the best possible anatomical place, with the least invasiveness, and that’s why I think this technology will be adopted by more and more hospitals and be developed for more and more procedures,” Dr. Rodriguez says. “It’s more advantageous for the success of surgery.”

Experience

Dr. Rodriquez received his bachelor of science degree from Brigham Young University. While a student there, he worked on a research project that involved studying osteoarthritis, which led to his interest in medicine and orthopedics. From that research experience, he published an article in the Osteoarthritis and Cartilage journal in 2004. He attended medical school at University of Connecticut School of Medicine where he was a member of the Scientific Research Society and was recognized for his presentation on “Reducing the > Burden of Osteoporosis.” SUMMER EDITION 2016 thenewyoumagazine.net

Dr. Rodriquez attended specialized training to work with the Mako Robotic-Arm Assisted Surgery system, practicing with a surgeon experienced with the system before beginning to treat patients with the system last fall.

He completed an Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at the University of Minnesota and then an upper extremity and hand fellowship at Columbia University Medical Center/New York Presbyterian Hospital.

Dr. Rodriquez said that he chose to move from New York to Sikeston, MO, because he wanted to practice general orthopedics and have the opportunity to treat a full array of different conditions. “If you practice in a big city, you only do knees or only do hips – you have to narrow to one small area of orthopedics,” he says. “I find it more more interesting to work with patients with a variety of conditions and to practice all the skills I learned throughout my education.” 48 thenewyoumagazine.net SUMMER EDITION 2016

Missouri Delta Medical Center is the only hospital offering this procedure for hundreds of miles, and Dr. Rodriguez is proud to be able to provide this service to his patients. “Some people think you have to go to a big city for this, but that’s not the case,” he says. “We have it right here.”

Personal

Dr. Rodriguez and his wife, Amy, have three children, Aubrey, 12, Leila, 9, and James, 5. He said the move from New York to Missouri was a little bit of an adjustment for the family, but they love the area and have discovered a love of hiking in the nearby towns. “When we go on vacation, we like to get to the ocean, but we enjoy day trips to places like Mark Twain National Park and St. Genevieve,” he says.

Like most families with young children, the Rodriguez family stays busy getting kids to their extra curricular activities and sports. When he discovers a little down time, Dr. Rodriguez enjoys baseball, golf and reading.

Missouri Delta Orthopedics

Missouri Delta Orthopedics includes Dr. Rodriguez, a physician’s assistant and two nurse practitioners. They treat all types of orthopedic conditions including patients needing joint replacements or those with sports injuries, meniscus tears, shoulder dislocations, and hand, elbow, feet and knee issues. The practice sees patients from Sikeston and all the surrounding communities, including Poplar Bluff, Charleston, Southern Illinois and even some from the Memphis area.

“I like meeting people and seeing how they are doing,” Dr. Rodriguez says about his job. “I take a real interest in people and developing the doctor/patient relationship. That’s what drives me to go to work every morning.”

Expands to South County at the new

Washington University Orthopedics

Advanced Medicine

W

ashington University Orthopedics in conjunction with Washington University Physicians and Barnes-Jewish Hospital recently opened a new office location at the Center for Advanced Medicine – South County to improve accessibility of orthopedic care to patients in the South County and surrounding communities. Adam LaBore, MD, Clinic Director of the Center for Advanced Medicine – South County and a physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist, is one of the expert physicians seeing patients in this new location.

“Rather than having patients navigate the difficulties of a busier, high-volume main campus in the Central West End, we have brought the care out into the community where our patients live and work,” Dr. LaBore says.

The clinic opened in April 2016 at I-55 and Butler Hill Road next door to the Siteman Cancer Center in order to better serve patients coming from the southern region and to create more of a community presence in South County.

The Center for Advanced Medicine – South County uses the same concept that was behind the Washington University and BarnesJewish Orthopedics Center in Chesterfield. It puts the needs of the patient first, and everything else follows suit. Detailed steps were

50

thenewyoumagazine.net SUMMER EDITION 2016

taken to design a patient-friendly space to minimize strain on the orthopedic patient. Minimizing patient steps along the way, creating a centralized cast room, and direct access to the radiology suite were all a priority in the design process.

The building really has all the services an orthopedic patient might need. Onsite radiology, casting and splinting services, a hand therapy specialty clinic, occupational and physical therapy and outpatient surgery are all available at this facility with a large physical therapy gym, Dr. LaBore says. In addition to seeing patients in South County, Dr. LaBore will also continue to have some clinic hours at the Washington University Barnes Jewish Orthopedic Center in Chesterfield. “We all work as a team, so it’s the same physicians and same level of care, just at different outpatient sites,” Dr. LaBore says. Dr. LaBore’s specialty is physical medicine and rehabilitation, also referred to as physiatry, specializing in the diagnosis and non-surgical musculoskeletal care of spine, joint, ligament, muscle and tendon problems.

He attended Loyola University Stritch

School of Medicine and did his residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Chicago. After serving as an officer and active-duty physician in the U.S. Army, he joined Washington University Orthopedics in 2004.

In addition to physical medicine and rehabilitation, other orthopedic services at South County include foot and ankle, hand and wrist, hip and knee, musculoskeletal oncology, shoulder and sports medicine care. The associate director of the site is Sandra Klein, MD, a foot and ankle specialist.

Timely Access to Comprehensive Orthopedic Care

“We also have two nurse practitioners on site who help us see patients in a more timely fashion,” Dr. LaBore says. “These professionals make patient appointments more accessible, and because we all collaborate, patients receive consistent, high level care.”

Corri Payton, MSN, APRN, BC, and Rich Planzo, MSN, DC, RN, NP-C, are the two physician extenders in South County.
