JEFF KOONS Split Rocker Vase, 2013 Glazed porcelain 14 ¼ x 15 ¾ x 13 Limited edition of 3,500 Estimated Retail Value: $5,000 Making use of conceptual constructs including the ancient, the ever yday, and the sublime, Koons creates luxurious icons and elaborate tableaux, which, beneath their captivating exteriors, engage the viewer in a metaphysical dialogue with cultural histor y, framing questions about taste and pleasure. Consistent with Koons’s persistent fascination with dichotomy and the in-between the inspiration for Split Rocker came when he decided to split and combine two similar but different toy rockers, a pony and a dinosaur. Graciously donated by Gagosian Galler y

JOHN NEWSOM Beauty Regained, 2017 Charcoal on paper 17” x 14” Signed and dated on reverse Estimated Retail Value: $8,500 John Newsom’s wheelhouse is the natural world, his paintings characteristically rendered in heroic scale, holding in balance nature’s simultaneously discordant and harmonious narratives which have no beginning and no ending. Newsom’s Beauty Regained, a charcoal drawing made uniquely for our NYCSF Gala, is the ar tist’s paean to beauty; an homage which encompasses all the spiritually and physically regenerative achievements humankind has and will continue to produce. Embodied in the cherished, revered, romantic symbol of the rose, Newsom invites us to remember that which can sometimes be forgotten: Ourselves. Newsom’s work is included in several permanent collections, including The Museum of Modern Ar t and The Whitney Museum of American Ar t. He received a BFA from The Rhode Island School of Design (1992) and an MFA from New York University (1994). Graciously donated by ar tist

ALEXANDRA PENNEY Drink the Wild Air, 2017 Mixed media photodrawing 44” x 56” One-of-a-kind Estimated Retail Value: $10,000 This ongoing series of one-of-a-kind photodrawings, by New York ar tist Alexandra Penney, is based upon flower arrangements, which have been staged in chemistr y beakers. Behind the flowers, the ar tist provides a structural counterpoint in the form of a structural grid. The ar tist’s series is a reflection on three dualities: nature/science, textual/visual, organic/ mathematic. The handwritten texts and marks superimposed on the photographs are derived from writers, poets, philosophers, and ar tists. Drink the Wild Air refers to a line cited from an essay by Ralph Waldo Emerson in which he extolls the celebration of life. Graciously donated by ar tist

Helping to establish photography as an ar t form in the twentieth centur y, his work had profound impact on the f/64 school of photographers, including Ansel Adams and Edward Weston. With a life-long interest in mechanics and cars, skyscrapers and machines - quintessential symbols of modern life in the early twentieth centur y – were among Strand’s subjects. Graciously donated by Eileen O’Kane Kornreich

Clifford Ross was inspired to create four limited-edition prints for NYSCF in 2016, when he saw a stem cell image created by NYSCF Staff Scientist Panos Douvaras, PhD, and noted parallels to his own ar tistic work, much of which is based on high-resolution photographs of nature. All of the images in Ross’s colorful and varied Harmonium series were created from one small detail found in an extremely highresolution photograph of Colorado’s Mt. Sopris. The “one” becomes the “many” in Ross’s images, which the ar tist sees as analogous to the way in which stem cells divide and reproduce. Tonight, in honor of the NYSCF Ar t Leadership award that Clifford Ross is receiving, Harmonium is presented as a special limited por tfolio edition. Clifford Ross’s ar t, which has expanded the boundaries of both photography and printmaking, has often been informed by science. Ross has previously used his Harmonium imager y to make extensive bodies of work on paper as well as computer-generated animated videos such as Harmonium Mountain I featuring an original score by Philip Glass. His work can be found in numerous public collections, including The Museum of Modern Ar t,The Metropolitan Museum of Ar t, The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, The J. Paul Getty Museum, and The Museum of Fine Ar ts, Houston. Graciously donated by artist

After being featured in several shows in America, Ganso returned to Europe for a shor t while before coming back to the US. TA R R A B A N D E T Primordial Universe, 2015 Ostrich egg, mosaic glass and white gold 12” x 6” Estimated Retail Value: $1,700 Tarra Bandet’s Founding Waves of Evolution transforms direct elements of nature into symbolic fragments of patterned light, vibrant color and structured design with mosaic glass, oil painting, an Ostrich egg and stone. The stunning mixed media sculpture is representative of Bandet’s larger thematic practice that explores the relationship between the complex evolution of humanity and nature. Bandet recognizes that this primar y origin is permanently united to the human condition throughout the entire histor y of all cultures. The constant evolution in nature, which includes humanity, captures our imagination and strengthens the foundations for higher learning by forging a covalent bond between the ar ts and sciences.
