EDUCATION AND OUTREACH INSPIRING FUTURE SCIENTISTS
Science literacy in the U.S. lags in
19th place among 35 developed nations, hindering our ability to fight disease
Black and Hispanic Americans occupy just
9% and 7% of
all STEM jobs , respectively
STEM employment has grown
79% since 1990,
but several
million
jobs remain unfulfilled due to lack of qualified candidates
The NYSCF Academy for Science and Society is
building a pipeline to cultivate the next generation of scientists, encouraging full participation from people of all ages and populations, including:
Students and Teachers NYSCF has educated over
2,000 students & teachers through seminars, lab tours, and internships

DEMOCRATIZING ACCESS TO SCIENCE EDUCATION STUDENTS AND TEACHERS Educating and inspiring the next generation of scientists is central to NYSCF’s mission. Over the years, NYSCF has developed a comprehensive program that engages students from kindergarten to graduate school as well as teachers: • The NYSCF Internship Program: a comprehensive summer curriculum where students gain real world experience • Family Stem Cell Day: a day of hands-on scientific exploration for students of all ages • NYSCF Research Institute Visits: field trips that show stem cell research in action and introduce a wide range of careers in STEM • Summer Research Program for Teachers: a laboratory-based training program for NYC high school teachers over two summers
THE SCIENTIFIC COMMUNITY Science works best when it is collaborative — when researchers across genders and diverse backgrounds work together to approach difficult questions from new angles. Each year, the NYSCF Conference convenes over 500 top researchers, and NYSCF regularly hosts meetings where scientists can share ideas and form collaborations. We also work toward full participation in the scientific workforce through our Initiative on Women in Science and Engineering.
THE PUBLIC Public engagement with science is critical to success in biomedical research. NYSCF hosts events that bring world-leading scientists to our headquarters for presentations and panel discussions on their groundbreaking discoveries. These events are open to members of the public – including patients and their families – and guests are encouraged to ask questions and engage in thoughtful discussions.
