WELCOME Welcome to the 2019 New York State Boys’ & Girls’ Junior Amateur Championships.

The New York State Golf Association is proud to partner with Seven Oaks Golf Club to provide a fair, challenging test in our efforts to identify New York’s top junior amateurs.

We are excited to showcase this wonderful design that has hosted past NYS Championships including four consecutive, six total, NYS Boys’ & Girls’ Junior Amateur Championships, as well as the 1993 & 2001 NYS Men’s Amateur Championship, and the 1983 NYS Women’s Amateur & Mid-Amateur Championships.

In addition to the NYS Boys’ & Girls’ Junior Amateur, the NYSGA conducts eight other annual amateur championships which crown a total of 17 state titleholders. These championships are open to men and women, juniors and seniors, of all golf ing abilities.

It takes a dedicated group of staff and volunteers to run these championships at the highest level. Our NYSGA team works hard to be the best and it shows. Thank you to our dedicated staff and tournament committee for their dedication and commitment to promoting amateur golf.

CONDITIONS OF PLAY Entries Open to male and female amateur golfers who are residents of New York State or, if not a resident, are dues paying members of an NYSGA member club. Entrants must have an active USGA Handicap Index (provided free by the NYSGA to all juniors).

Format These championships are two-day 36-hole stroke play competitions. There is no cut.

Ties If there is a tie for the winner after the conclusion of regulation play, a sudden death playoff will be used to determine the winner.

Sectional Qualifying 18 holes of stroke play, scheduled at 13 sites between June and July (Junior Am only).

Caddies The use of a caddie during practice or championship rounds is not permitted.

Spectators, including parents, must not give advice to players during their round. A breach of this Rule may result in a penalty to the player.

SEVEN OAKS GOLF CLUB

Seven Oaks Golf Club is located in Hamilton, NY.

Seven Oaks Golf Club has a rich history which dates back to 1916 when a group of faculty at neighboring Colgate University and some townspeople met to form a local golf club.

In 1927, the course was redesigned by Thomas Winston and named Seven Oaks in honor of the ancestral home of the Colgate family in England.

Less than ten years later, William Reid proposed an 18-hole course to be constructed on the newly-acquired Dunn Farm. Gene Sarazen and Robert Trent Jones helped Reid create the “Augusta of the North.”

The first nine was completed in 1958 and the second nine in 1965. The original course on the hill was closed an the name transferred to the new, modern-day Seven Oaks Golf Club.

This year’s tournament marks the fourth consecutive year, sixth total, that the NYS Boys’ & Girls’ Junior Amateur Championships has taken place at Seven Oaks. The course has also hosted the 1977 N.C.A.A. National Tournament, the 1983 Women’s State Amateur Tournament, the 1990 Ben Hogan Central New York Classic, the 1993 & 2001 NYS Men’s Amateur Championship, and the 2010 Patriot League Championship.

SAMPLE WINS IN PLAYOFF TO SECURE ANOTHER NYS TITLE Luke Sample took home the 2018 NYS Boys’ Junior Amateur title.

Luke Sample birdied the opening hole of a sudden-death playoff to claim the 77th NYS Junior Amateur and is now a two-time, back-to-back state titleholder.

After thirty-six holes, Sample of NYSGA eClub - NYC and Nic Whittaker of Country Club of Ithaca were tied atop the leaderboard at 1-over 145 (both shooting 73-72).

The two players were paired in the final group together, along with Stephen Bicks who also opened at 73. Sample made the turn three strokes ahead of them.

On the back, Sample continued his steady and consistent play while Whittaker began to gain momentum and found a rhythm.

“I was able to get things rolling going into the backside which I needed to do,” Whittaker said about his 34 coming in.

The playoff began on the twelfth hole, a 521-yard par 5. Both players placed their drives along the left side of the fairway. From there, Sample went first and left his shot about 20 feet short of the hole but perfectly in line with his target. Whittaker’s second shot managed its way into the front right greenside bunker, in which he unable to get up-and-down from. Sample pushed his first putt within two feet, tapped in his birdie, and secured his place once again in NYS Junior history.

“When it’s coming down to the wire, I really enjoy the competition. It helps me get rid of the nerves because I love it so much.”

LAST YEAR’S CHAMPIONSHIP Finishing in third was Shane Devincenzo of Met PGA Golf Club who finished one stroke back at 146, carding a 72 in the final round’s tough and wet conditions.

The 17-year-old from Port Jefferson, played in a 36-hole U.S. Amateur qualifier during this championship’s practice round, and didn’t get into upstate New York until late at night, losing his chance to gain familiarity with the course. But the way he played this week instilled confidence in his game and competitive mindset going forward.

“I took a lot of mental positives away this week. Be confident in my game and my swing, and you don’t need to necessarily know the course to play well. I played consistent. I got beat, I didn’t really lose. I’m definitely pleased to take third.”

Bicks, of Skaneateles Country Club, ended Nic Whittaker up finishing tied for fourth at 147 along with Ryan Hart of Country Club of Buffalo and Gavin Simon of Locust Hill Country Club.

Sample now joins Jude Cummings of Irondequoit Country Club, as well as Ron Philo, as the only two players in NYSGA history to win a Sub-Junior and then Junior title in back-to-back years. Moreover, they both won their Junior Amateurs in playoffs.

“There’s a lot of history to this event. It was great competition and I really enjoyed it. I’m just thankful and appreciative of everyone here that I was given this opportunity,” Sample said humbly.

In just a year, he transitioned from 6,000 yards to 6,850 yards on the tricky Robert Trent Jones design, but that didn’t seem to weaken his performance. “I can definitely handle it, I proved that to myself this week.

It feels good, the confidence is huge. This will hopefully kick start a few good weeks coming up.”

SHOEMAKER SUCCESSFULLY DEFENDS NYS JUNIOR TITLE Bailey Shoemaker captured the 2018 NYS Girls’ Junior Amateur title.

Bailey Shoemaker successfully defended her NYS Girls’ Junior Amateur title to win her second state championship at the age of only 13.

The young star from West Edmeston secured her victory with a 2-under 34 on the shortened second round to win by three strokes at 1-over 109.

Elena Lopez finished in second at 112 (77-35). Mikah McDonnell of Locust Hill Country Club finished in third at 113.

Three tied for fourth at 115 including Kaitlyn Lee of Westchester Country Club, Malini Rudra of NYSGA eClub – CNY, and Amber Pennington of Wiltwyck Golf Club.

After opening with a 75, Shoemaker had a one stroke advantage over the field. In her second round, which was reduced to nine holes due to inclement weather, she began on #10 and attacked the course right away.

“I have been struggling with putting quite a bit the past few weeks, when normally it’s a strength. It was a lot better today,” Shoemaker mentioned. “I had four par putts that barely dropped. I was shooing them all in.”

Joining her in the final pairing was runner-up Lopez of Crag Burn Golf Club and Pasqualina Tartaglione of NYSGA eClub – Mid Hudson, both 18 and now graduates from the junior ranks.

LAST YEAR’S CHAMPIONSHIP Shoemaker doesn’t seem to have a problem with pressure. Each round is just another opportunity for her to play golf, and have fun attacking a course’s layout.

“I don’t ever think of nerves. It’s just another day on the golf course. I just play my own game, stick to fundamentals and always try do my best.”

She even mentioned how she wanted to play a full 18 holes that was originally scheduled for the second round, and was disappointed to hear she was only playing nine instead. “I just wanted to play. I absolutely love playing here, my home course. It’s always in great condition and a lot of fun,” and her viewpoint doesn’t alter either, even when it’s raining and miserable out.

Shoemaker is back to defend this year, and has five more chances to tally on additional titles.

MAGLISCO CRUISES TO VICTORY IN NYS SUB-JUNIOR Anthony Maglisco won the 2018 NYS Boys’ Sub-Junior Amateur title.

Anthony Maglisco cruised to victory at the 62nd NYS Boys’ Sub-Junior Amateur Championship, winning by six strokes and finishing at 108.

The 14-year-old from Bellevue Country Club, shot even-par during both rounds (72-36) during tough, wet conditions.

Tied for runner-up honors was Charlie Fischer of East Aurora Country Club and Zachary Locke of Corning Country Club, at 6-over 114.

At 115, was Velton Perry of Onondaga Golf & Country Club and Kevin Zhao of NYSGA eClub – WNY. Maglisco had a three-stroke cushion after the opener, and knew with only nine holes scheduled for the final round, someone would have to go low to catch up.

“Got off to a decent start, made the turn at 1-under, got it back to 2-under with two to play, but bogeyed my last two. I knew I had a three-shot lead and one three-putt wasn’t going to kill me,” he said.

Although the forecast wasn’t looking great, and afternoon play for the Sub-Junior was delayed, Maglisco didn’t let what he couldn’t control get inside his head too much.

“I didn’t care what the weather was, just play through it. I knew someone would have to shoot a couple under to beat me. I was kind of tired, though. Bored of just sitting around,” he said referring to his Wednesday morning.

The two runner-ups, weren’t necessarily playing for second but knew they would have a hard time climbing back up to where Maglisco was on the leaderboard in only nine holes.

Fischer began the week bogey-double-par-bogey, but converted five birdies and only a few bogeys through the final 23 holes.

At 13, Fischer will have another chance at it 2019.

“On this course, all of the parts of your game have to be good. I definitely wanted to win.

I think I know exactly what I’ll need to work on to be able to win. This is a perfect kind of golf course for this type tournament and really tells you what kind of player you are and what the strengths and weaknesses are in your game.”

Maglisco is now too old to defend, but achieved what he set out to and will hopefully continue to ride his momentum.

APPLY FOR A SCHOLARSHIP If you are a junior golfer, you may be eligible to receive a scholarship through the NYSGA. Our fund rewards over $30,000 to deserving juniors each year.

The NYSGA Scholarship Fund offers need-based scholarships to high school or college students that either work in golf operations at an NYSGA member club (Caddie, pro shop, bag room or golf course matinence), compete in NYSGA tournaments, or belong to an NYSGA member club.

Applications for 2020-21 school year will be available this winter.
