WELCOME Welcome to the 2019 New York State Women’s Amateur & Mid-Amateur Championship. The New York State Golf Association is proud to partner with Lancaster Country Club to provide a fair, challenging test in our efforts to identify New York’s top women’s amateur & mid-amateur players.

We are excited to showcase this wonderful design that has hosted past NYS Championships including the 1965 NYS Men’s Amateur Championship, as well as the NYS Boys’ Junior and Sub-Junior Amateur Championships in 1968 and 1976.

In addition to the NYS Women’s Amateur, the NYSGA conducts eight other annual amateur championships which crown a total of 17 state titleholders.

These championships are open to men and women, juniors and seniors, of all golf ing abilities.

It takes a dedicated group of staff and volunteers to run these championships at the highest level. Our NYSGA team works hard to be the best and it shows. Thank you to our dedicated staff and tournament committee for their dedication and commitment to promoting amateur golf.

CONDITIONS OF PLAY Eligibility The Championship is open to female amateur golfers who are members of the NYSGA (def ined as either belonging to an NYSGA member club or joining the NYSGA directly as an eClub member), and have an active USGA Handicap Index issued by the NYSGA member club.

Format This championship is a three-day 54-hole stroke play competition.

There is a cut in each Championship after 36 holes to the low 50% and ties and any player within 10 strokes of the lead.

Championships There are two championships being conducted concurrently: 90th NYS Women’s Amateur Championship (all ages) 11th NYS Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship (25+)

Caddies A player may provide her own caddie. No caddies are available through the host club. All caddies will be required to use an NYSGA bib during practice and competition rounds. Bibs can be checked out at the NYSGA off ice (license is required).

2019 NYS WOMEN’S AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS

LANCASTER COUNTRY CLUB

Lancaster Country Club is located in Lancaster, New York.

Lancaster Country Club was founded in 1925. The 18-hole layout was co-designed by architects Charles G. Nieman and Craig Schreiner. The private course stretches up to 6,568 yards with a par of 72 and has come to be known as one of the region’s f inest.

The course has a variety of mature trees surrounding the valleys and creeks that wind through the picturesque, rolling landscape, making the course as beautiful to view as it is challenging to play.

Lancaster has a rich history of hosting elite amateur competitions over the decades, beginning with the 1965 New York State Men’s Amateur Championship won by William Tryon. The club also hosted the New York State Boys’ Junior & Sub-Junior Amateur Championships in 1968 won

by E. J. Cardish and Don Kalode (Sub-Junior), and again in 1976 won by David Boeff and Harold Girdlestone (Sub-Junior).

LAST YEAR’S CHAMPIONSHIP

COX CAPTURES SECOND NYS WOMEN’S AMATEUR Kyra Cox of Centennial CC took home the 2018 NYS Women’s Amateur title.

Kyra Cox went wire-to-wire over three tournament rounds at Yahnundasis Golf Club to capture the 89th New York State Women’s Amateur Championship by seven strokes.

She finished at even-par 219, and had the only under-par round in the field with her opening 71. Her two 74s that followed, tied the field for the next lowest round.

Finishing in second, was Chelsea Dantonio who totaled 226 (77-75-74) over the three days and battled for the runner-up spot with Alice Hodge at 228.

Defending champion, Marianna Monaco of Scarsdale Golf Club, and Victoria Parker of Orchard Park Golf Club, both closed out with their best rounds of the week to tie for fourth at 232.

Two-time NYS Women’s Amateur and two-time NYS Women’s Mid-Amateur champion, Christy Schultz of Brook-Lea Country Club, had a top ten finish at 236.

Cox won her first title at Tuscarora Golf Club in 2015, at age 15. Now, three years later, she’s secured another and will have her name etched into the Oak Hill Country Club Championship Trophy once again.

“It’s definitely really special to me because I had a tough beginning of the season and worked really hard to get my game back. I’m going to college, and to win this event before I leave is awesome.”

She joined the Furman University Paladins golf team as a freshman in 2018-19.

LAST YEAR’S CHAMPIONSHIP The race for second between Dantonio of Crag Burn Golf Club and Hodge of Bonnie Briar Country Club, came down to the last few holes. Dantonio was ahead by a stroke, before bogeying the par-4 fifteenth while Hodge converted a par. On sixteen and seventeen, Hodge went bogey-bogey while Dantonio played to par. They both birdied the eighteenth and Chelsea secured her runner-up spot.

“On the first hole, I made a great putt for birdie and thought, okay let’s get this going, maybe I have a shot here. I wasn’t really paying attention to where Alice was. I knew it was starting to get close when I was on the back. She was playing very steady and wasn’t making many mistakes.”

Although a ways back from first, she was happy to play the game she wanted to on the final day and bring home some hardware to the well-decorated Crag Burn Golf Club.

HOECKER VICTORIOUS IN FIRST ATTEMPT AT MID-AM Jenna Hoecker of Brook-Lea CC captured the 2018 NYS Women’s Mid-Amateur by ten strokes.

A 1-under 72 during the final round, secured a ten-stroke victory for Jenna Hoecker at the 10th New York State Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship.

The score was the lone under-par round of the championship and her opening round 74 was the second lowest. She finished with a 54-hole total of 221 two over par.

Tying for runner-up honors was defending champion Lauren Cupp of Yahnundasis and two-time New York State Women’s Senior champion, Kim Kaul of Gowanda Country Club. The pair both finished at 231.

Tammy Blyth of Monroe Golf Club, who was in the final pairing with Hoecker and Cupp, had her highest score of the tournament with an 82 and finished in fourth (went 76-76 in first two).

Hoecker was able to go wire-to-wire over the three championship rounds, padding her lead over the field each day. At age 25, this was her first year of eligibility in the Mid-Am division, and certainly made the most of it.

“It feels good. Going into every year you have goals of what you want to do each summer. This was my number one thing, I wanted to win the mid-am the first year playing in it. It feels really good to be able to cross that one off my list,” she said.

Five years removed from her last state title, daily routines have shifted for Hoecker and the win Lauren Cupp felt a little different than the last one. “It was very different from playing in the state am. In 2013, I was able to practice seven days a week, worked at a golf course every day, and could play whenever I wanted. Now, I’m an accountant and play on the weekends when I can. It’s a lot different.”

Although it seems like a blowout victory, she was nursing only a one-stroke lead after the opening round which extended to three strokes after two. On the final day, momentum was on her side.

“My warm up was great, my putting was great. So going off the first tee I was really confident.”

After the victory, she is now one of two players to win both the Women’s Amateur and Mid-Amateur, the other being Christy Rittenhouse Schultz, a fellow member of Brook-Lea Country Club who competed in the amateur division in 2018.
