Seven Oaks Golf Club - Hamilton, New York

July 27-28, 2021

CONDUCTED BY THE

NYSGA.ORG I #PLAYNYSGA

WELCOME To all the participants, spectators, and volunteers, I bid you welcome to the New York State Boys' and Girls' Junior Amateur Championships. Once again, the New York State Golf Association is privileged to join with the management and staff of Seven Oaks Golf Club to provide a memorable challenge in crowning New York’s premier boys' and girls' junior golfers. It is a great pleasure to return to this historic Robert Trent Jones Sr. design, which has been the site of several memorable New York State Championships, including five consecutive, seven total, NYS Boys’ & Girls’ Junior Amateur Championships, as well as the 1993 & 2001 NYS Men’s Amateur Championship, and the 1983 NYS Women’s Amateur Championship. On behalf of the entire New York State Golf Association, I would like to offer our appreciation and thanks to the management, clubhouse staff, Golf Professional staff, and especially the course grounds crew of Seven Oaks, whose combined efforts has provided us with this wonderful venue that neighbors the campus of Colgate University. As past experience has demonstrated, we certainly expect an exciting championship competition, which will challenge the golfers to employ all of their golfing skills. Additional thanks go out to our dedicated NYSGA staff who, with our tournament volunteers, work so hard to provide a tournament worthy of the talented competitors. This is a wonderful opportunity to put the past year of the COVID-19 pandemic behind us and focus on the true enjoyment that the game of golf brings us. So, here’s wishing all the participants the best of luck and, no matter the outcome, please enjoy this experience and the great memories this beautiful venue will bring you. Sincerely,

Joe Enright, President New York State Golf Association

SEVEN OAKS GOLF CLUB

Seven Oaks Golf Club is located in Hamilton, New York.

Seven Oaks Golf Club has a rich history which dates back to 1916 when a group of faculty at neighboring Colgate University and some townspeople met to form a local golf club. In 1927, the course was redesigned by Thomas Winston and named Seven Oaks in honor of the ancestral home of the Colgate family in England. Less than ten years later, William Reid proposed an 18-hole course to be constructed on the newly-acquired Dunn Farm. Gene Sarazen and Robert Trent Jones helped Reid create the “Augusta of the North.” The first nine was completed in 1958 and the second nine in 1965. The original course on the hill was closed an the name transferred to the new, modern-day Seven Oaks Golf Club. This year’s tournament marks the fourth consecutive year, sixth total, that the NYS Boys’ & Girls’ Junior Amateur Championships has taken place at Seven Oaks. The course has also hosted the 1977 N.C.A.A. National Tournament, the 1983 NYS Women’s State Amateur, the 1990 Ben Hogan Central New York Classic, the 1993 & 2001 NYS Men’s Amateur Championship, and the 2010 Patriot League Championship.

Luke Sample successfully defended his title, claiming the 78th New York State Boys’ Junior Amateur Championship in a sudden-death playoff. This was Sample’s third straight state title, including the 2017 NYS Sub-Junior and 2018 NYS Junior. After thirty-six holes, Sample of MGA eClub – NYC and Jud Langille of Trump National GC were tied atop the leaderboard at three-under 141. Sample shot a 66 and 75, while Langille carded a 68 and 73 in the first two rounds. The two players were paired in the final group together, along with James Allen of Scarsdale Golf Club who opened at 69. Sample bogeyed the first two holes in the second round, allowing Langille to close the gap. Both players spent time with the lead during the final round. Langille was one stroke up on Sample heading into the 18th hole. Langille bogeyed the home hole, while Sample finished with a par to force the playoff. The leaders went back to 18, a 538-yard par 5, for the sudden-death playoff. Sample two-putted for birdie, while Langille made a par. “Going into today, I felt pretty good. I will be the first to tell you that there were some big mental mistakes that I got away with. A win is a win and I am really proud with how NYSGA.ORG I #PLAYNYSGA

2019 CHAMPIONSHIP I stuck with it on 18 and pulled driver. I decided I was going to go for the win,” Sample explained. “This week was great. The last two days we have had perfect blue skies. I played well on the front nine today, but I had a rough back nine. But, congrats to Luke, he played great. Overall, I am happy with the week,” Langille said. Sample, 16, also birdied the opening hole of a sudden-death playoff to claim the 2018 NYS Boys’ Junior Championship. He captured the NYS Boys’ Sub-Junior Championship in 2017 by four strokes.

Jud Langille

Speaking on the differences between this year and last year’s championship, Sample said, “Two completely different tournaments for the way I played them. I felt like last year I had consistency and could feel my rhythm. Yesterday, I had nine birdies and today only a couple, so completely different. But I am happy with both of them.” Finishing in third was James Allen and George Roessler of Maidstone Club, who carded an even 144. Roessler converted four birdies in the second round to finish at 69, the only under-par score of the day in the Boys’ division.

James Allen

“Today I was more in control in the mental sense, and my putting helped,” Roessler said. Both under 18, Sample and Langille will be eligible to compete at next year’s tournament. “I would love to come back, it’s cool to try and win a state title,” Langille said. Winners were also recognized based on age groups 15-18 with the following competitors taking home some hardware: Zachary Locke (15), Roessler (16), James Allen (17), and 2015 NYS Sub-Junior Champ Jeremy Summerson (18).

Three-peat. Bailey Shoemaker captured her third-straight New York State Girls’ Junior Amateur title in 2019 at Seven Oaks Golf Club at the age of only 14. The young star from West Edmeston secured her victory with a one-over 73 in the second round to win by seven strokes at three-over 147. After both opening with a 74, Shoemaker and Amber Pennington of Wiltwyck Golf Club were tied for the top spot heading into the final 18 holes. Two birdies and an eagle on the front nine propelled Shoemaker to a three-stroke lead at the turn. “It wasn’t my best week, especially being my home course. I still got it done playing scrappy ball,” Shoemaker said. Speaking on the opportunity to play at home, Shoemaker said, “It is one of my favorite New York courses, if not the favorite. I just love coming here to play and I wish all my tournaments were here. Seeing the trophy in the pro shop, I love it.” Shoemaker joins two past champions with three consecutive victories, including Kerri Murphy from 1993-95, and Nannette Hill from 2000-2002.

“It’s awesome. I thought I would be the only one to three-peat, but it is okay because I’ll just be back next year. Three in a row is so special and crazy. It is so cool just to have that,” Shoemaker said. Mikah McDonnell of Locust Hill Country Club finished in second at ten-over 154. McDonnell came in third at last year’s championship. “I felt really strong off the tee. I was able to put myself in really good positions and create opportunities to make a couple shots. I felt pretty good. I loved the groups I was playing with; they are all really nice girls and I had a lot of fun,” McDonnell said. Pennington and Lauren Chen of Met PGA Junior Golf Club tied for second at 155. Rounding out the top five was Maya Beasley of Hollow Brook Golf Club, who finished at 156. Winners were also recognized based on age groups with the following competitors taking home some hardware: Lily Zhang (12 & under), Julia Zigrossi (13), Beasley (14), Amie Scherrer (15), Chen (16), Taylor Miano (17), and Emily Kase (18).

The 14-year-old carded a 70 and 75 during the tournament to finish at 145. He converted seven birdies during the two-day tournament. “This week was different for me. Usually it is my short game that holds me together, but this week it was my long game. My driver was unbelievable. I couldn’t believe how well I was hitting it. This is really the only tournament that I can say my driver won it for me,” Fischer said. Speaking on the course conditions, Fischer explained, “It was a great final tournament NYSGA.ORG I #PLAYNYSGA

round because of the way the course was set up. It wasn’t unfair, but you had to play smart. You don’t want to be aggressive and I think the champs Luke Sample and Bailey Shoemaker were able to figure that out,” he said of the course. Punn Chittaratlert of Tecumseh Golf Course earned runner-up honors with a six-over 150. Chittaratelert is a veteran to this tournament and played his best game yet this year: “I was playing really well. I wasn’t in the lead group, which actually really helped me stay focused. I wasn’t distracted by the other players. This is my best year at this tournament.” At 152, was Jacob Dantonio of Crag Burn Golf Club and Caleb Decker of Seven Oaks. The duo played in the final group with Fischer after carding a 71 and 72 in the opening round, respectively. Rounding out the top five was Jason Starkweather of NYSGA eClub - Southern Tier at 158.
