Dialogues on Design Dialogues on Design is a new series of conversations with leading interior designers, landscape designers, and architects, moderated by Newell Turner, editor-in-chief of House Beautiful and editorial director of the Hearst Design Group. Each of the discussions will feature two prominent designers discussing their work and current trends in design today. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet and talk with the designers at a reception following each program. Participation in this series is by subscription; $300 for the series. Spring Exhibition Rescued, Restored, Reimagined: New York’s Landmark Interiors Opening Reception

The exhibition features an in depth look inside public spaces, both familiar and less-known, that are designated as interior landmarks. Coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the NYC Landmarks Preservation law, the exhibit will highlight the importance of these landmark interiors through archival images and new photography by Larry Lederman. The curatorial team for the exhibition includes architect Hugh Hardy, interior designer Kitty Hawks, design historian Judith Gura, and preservationist Kate Wood. Wednesday, February Behind the Scene: Set Decoration in TV & Film
APRIL 6pm
Working in collaboration with directors and production designers, set decorators are key members of the design team for film and television, tasked with converting the blank canvas of the set into a space that feels authentic and believable. They must research, resource, and acquire all of the objects required to dress the sets — from interior items like furniture, drapery, and knickknacks to exterior elements such as street lamps, trashcans, or rubble and debris. Andrew Jackness, film production designer, will lead a discussion with prominent set decorators George DeTitta, Birdman (2014); Regina Graves, The Knick (Cinemax); and David Schlesinger, Annie (2014), about the creative process, from preparation to filming.

Wednesday, March 6pm Changing Use: The Dilemma of Landmark Interiors The challenges of preserving New York’s landmark interiors doesn’t end with their designation. Changing circumstances that mandate their conversion to different functions may bring about alterations that change the appearance and may compromise the integrity of the site. Hugh Hardy, H3 Hardy Collaboration Architecture; Kitty Hawks, interior designer; and Justin Davidson, architectural critic, will join New York magazine design editor Wendy Goodman in a provocative discussion about the problems faced in preserving landmark interiors in an era of changing needs and a city committed to the pursuit of the new.

Thursday, March 6pm Carolyn Englefield: A Passion for Living Lecture and Book Signing Carolyn Englefield, interiors editor at Veranda, will present a lecture on her latest book, Veranda: A Passion for Living (Sterling, 2014), which embraces the idea of what makes a home exceptional — one with an unforgettable sense of personality and ardor. Englefield will showcase stunning European houses, from France and Italy to Switzerland and Sweden, sharing the design secrets and inner sanctums of tastemakers and trendsetters such as Axel Vervoordt, Jacques Grange, Veere Grenney, Kathryn Ireland, and Christian Liaigre. There will be a reception and book signing immediately following the lecture. Free and open to the public.
THESIS/CAPSTONE PROJECTS EXHIBITIONS BFA Winter Thesis Projects Opening Reception: Thursday, January 29, 6–8pm Exhibition on View: January 30 – February 18, 2015
This exhibition features the work of more than 30 BFA candidates who completed their thesis projects in December 2014. Monday, April Eileen Gray: Why Now?

Eileen Gray, the Irish-born designer who was active in France during the 1910s and ‘20s, is considered one of the more talented figures in the history of modern design. She was the first European artist to adapt Asian lacquer techniques to furniture, a talented interior designer, and an avant-gardist whose house E1027, built in the French Riviera, is considered a masterpiece of Modernist domestic architecture. In a panel discussion — which includes Cloé Pitiot, curator at Centre Pompidou in Paris; Jennifer Goff, curator at the National Museum of Ireland; and Sandra Gering, founder of the Friends of E1027 — design historian and educator Daniella Ohad will moderate and address the question: “Eileen Gray: Why Now?”

Thursday, April 6pm Public Lives: Preserving New York’s Landmark Interiors Many of New York’s best interiors survive for a reason: people. In challenging the forces that nearly led to the destruction of such places as Grand Central Terminal and Radio City Music Hall, preservation advocates secured a future for an extraordinary interior design legacy that enriches our lives today. Kent Barwick, civic leader and former NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission Chair; Roberta Brandes Gratz, journalist and urban critic; and Francis Morrone, architectural historian, join preservation historian Anthony C. Wood for a checkup on the interior preservation movement, with an introductory overview by Kate Wood, co-curator of NYSID’s exhibition, “Rescued, Restored, Reimagined: New York’s Landmark Interiors.” Presented in collaboration with the New York Preservation Archive Project

Organized in partnership with Open House New York Weave your way across the city in a fun-filled adventure, looking for the hidden secrets in some of New York’s most daring and progressive interior landmarks. Participants will learn about how and why great architectural experiments were able to take place — the social forces they responded to, the engineering feats they achieved, the rules their architects broke — in a challenging and informative game, with friends.

Wednesday, April 6pm Alumni Lecture — Charles Pavarini III: From NYSID to 17 Design Awards NYSID alumnus Charles Pavarini III is the founder and president of Charles Pavarini III Design Associates Inc., a firm specializing in architecturally-based interior design. Pavarini is known for his work on numerous landmark buildings in New York City and throughout the world, including the Seagram Tower, the United Nations, and the State Theater at Lincoln Center, and has received countless accolades and awards for his work. He will speak about how to take your imagination and turn creative thoughts into the business of interior design. There will be a reception following the lecture. Free for all NYSID alumni.

Thursday, April Workplace Design That Respects Human Nature

Designing workplaces is a complicated endeavor. We’re social creatures that benefit from mingling with each other, but distractions can keep us from doing our best work. Join us as Christina Bodin Danielsson, PhD, researcher at School of Architecture, the Royal Institute of Technology, and the Stress Research Institute, Stockholm University, presents her research on the sorts of spaces where people do their best work and feel good, mentally and physically. A panel discussion featuring Bodin Danielsson; Sally Augustin, PhD, principal, Design With Science; and Leigh Stringer, director of innovation and research, HOK, will follow.
