NOVEMBER 2019

A NEWSLETTER FOR NYSNA RNs AT WESTCHESTER MEDICAL CENTER

Nurses Push Back on Vacation Cancellation Back in November, Westchester Medical Center Chief Nursing Executive, Paula Fessler, made a surprise announcement. She proclaimed that nurses would not be allowed to schedule vacation in the month of June, to accommodate the rollout of Cerner, a new Electronic Medical Records system. This news came as a surprise to Westchester Med nurses, because Section 9.01 of our contract clearly states: “The vacation period will be the entire year.” This means that no portion of the year can be blocked off to deny vacation requests. We filed a grievance and turned out members to our grievance hearing on November 14. We spoke out forcefully in support of our employer following the contract. Because Cerner training will have to be provided on an ongoing basis for new hires, it is possible to train NYSNA nurses on Cerner when they return from any June vacation. Even more nurses spoke out by signing onto a petition demanding respect. More than 1,000 professional registered nurses agreed that “WMC nurses will not

be subject to inappropriate bullying nor disrespectful, threatening, menacing, or any other form of unprofessional communication and/or behavior. RNs are VITAL to WMC.” Our solidarity is winning! Many nurses have had their vacations approved. However, we are still hearing about some units where nurses have been wrongfully denied vacation requests – particularly in the month of June. We must continue to be vigilant in enforcing our contract and monitor where and when problems arise. Please reach out to your NYSNA Rep or Delegate if you have been denied vacation time or are aware of a potential contract violation. Respect is a two-way street. Westchester Med nurses provide the highest quality of care to our patients, despite the challenges we often face. We respect our patients and our hospital. We earn our vacation time. We only ask that the Administration respects us enough to realize that we deserve to use it.
