MAKING FASHION MAKE A DIFFERENCE

S

ome models have given this fashion season a new globally sustainable twist . This twist is really a return to what makes a difference in today’s world. Giving back to people whose lives are less fortunate than those of the fashionably clad models who strut down the runway wearing clothing that could feed a hungry village for a year. The women are determined to prove that they are not uncaring self centered or shallow, as some people have labeled fashion models. They are using their new found fame on the catwalk to empower and rejuvenate their home villages and cities in Africa and all around the world. More and more African models have been gracing the catwalks of New York, London and Milan. These faces and names are fast becoming household names and notable in fashion circles. Models like Yasmin Warsame native of Somalia a country deep within Africa. Her giving back extends mostly into the remote areas of Somalia that are in crisis that range from famine, to poverty, to drought etc. Liya Kebede and The Liya Kebede Foundation, which saves the lives of mothers and children through access to maternal health care; Noella Coursaris´s Georges Malaika Foundation Empowers African Women and Children. These are just some of the many impacted charities that the runway stars of today are giving back to.

“Women want to dress up and look good, but I think it is time we moved from thinking that beauty is something that we purchase from a store versus something that we should have within. Beauty is something that we should carry within every single day and everywhere we go. As I get older, as I grow, as I experience life, as my perceptions change. I think beauty is definitely one of the greatest gifts GOD gave us and it is within each and everyone of us.” - Yasmin Warsame

This little green power pack in it’s sleek little green case is my new best friend. Orly has created some high intensity luminous colors that come complete with shimmer for your holiday sparkle. After wearing on color I got 3 complements in one day. Sam Edelman is my new best shoe brand. I have very sensitive feet and I brought 3 pair of Same Edelman shoes that gave me comfort style and reasonably priced... on sale anyway. Hope you enjoy this second issue!

The Convertible Dress Story

By Dorelle mcpherson

Now in her Philadelphia showroom she has found her calling as a designer. Although it was a long road she can now add celebrity clients like french actress Chloe Domange to her repertoire. Dominique is not the only fresh up coming convertible dress designer we found. Haley Starr out of Los Angels CA also has a collection of feminine and romantic inspired convertible dress collections. Haley’s goal is to make women feel beautiful while giving them affordable alternatives that can be worn in 60 ways. Her collection is quite extensive and she even does made to order for her clients.

n an economy that is struggling to find itself fashion designer and fashion enthusiasts are finding ways to cope with the need for a wardrobe that changes even though their pockets might not be. More and more people are adding the convertible dress to their wardrobes. While this kind of dress has been around the fashion circle since the 1970’s it is still a fresh new “twist” on one piece dressing. Designer Dominique Ansari has one of the most innovating and dramatically crafted one piece convertible dress collections to date. Her designs are not only wearable and artistic, they also leave the wearer with a modern and sexy appeal. The designer believes that women should feel comfortable in their own skin. They call the collection “Comfort Couture”. Fabrications used are supple to the skin and drape like they were made for a goddess. Many times we see young designers often inspired by fashion at a very early age. Dominique was inspired as early on in life as 11 years old.

Another designer Cat Biggar is the design visionary behind The Convertible Dress which was launched in San Francisco in June 2010. This unique dress is a single garment that can be worn in 50 different ways, creating a style for every occasion. Convertible dressing is not a new idea . It emerged during the 1970’s Diane Von Furstenberg and Donna Karen were among the two designers to bring this trend to the forefront of fashion. So many designers are now offering their creative expertise to come up with more twisty versions of this affordable versatile piece of fashion.

Not only could you in the 70’s and 80’s when fashion was in ones own hands given a pair of scissors and a sewing machine, purchase your own pattern for a dress that was called the infinite dress. Never again did you have to worry about looking the same or wearing the same dress to two occasions back to back. It was a rational and economical solution. Now designers like Donna Karen (Infinity Dress) and DVF are bringing it back. The competition is a little more with the serge of indie fashion. Butter by Nadia, The Convertible Dress, Two Birds (UK) and Ravon are all contenders for the spot light. Even retail brands like Victoria Secret are jumping on the convertible dress train. Not that a girl can have too many of these types of dresses in her closet, but it is a look. Designers are forced to change hemlines and come up with sexy creative ways to tie these dresses so that they become unique signature pieces. Varied hemlines and embellishments give the customer the variety needed to keep this trend alive.

TV’s femme fatal line up By Dar Dowling

Claire Danes

Few words are able to describe her performance on HOMELAND this Fall but some key words are Relevant, Explosive, Riveting and Memorable. Claire Danes has ushered in a new era for how dramatic women are portrayed on TV. Sitting back watching Claire Danes as she is sneaking to her medication for a unknown disorder we all thought was due to her 9/11 incident was a riveting back story to the Terrorist plot story line. Not only were you watching as a patriot but you were watching as a women’s interest story as well, The writers of HOMELAND on Showtime Network gave deep insight to it’s women’s roles. These roles offered us a look into the home lives of the “new” American women. Broken families and marriages, kids growing up too fast, adultery and yes falling in love when your all “messed up” these are some interesting perspectives taken but the writers for this Showtime series. With the obvious yet unexpected cliffhanger, watchers are let waiting to see what will become of Claire Danes character C.I.A officer “Carrie Mathison”. Will she get back the status she so desperately craves or will she become one of us. This series makes you ask the question of what can ordinary citizens do in this new Homeland. Are we really secure? are we really to expect the political games played to help us try to overcome the threats here and abroad. Homeland put their story, our story where the heart is.

Morena Baccarin

- Known mostly for the evil Anna from the series “V” is now strutting he acting muscles alongside Claire Danes and Damian Watcyn Lewis. Playing internally wounded war veteran wife, struggling Mom, Adulteress and homemaker, this multifaceted role allows us to see deep into the American dynamics of women’s problems today. Important role that she brings a quite sophistication to someone most women can identify with.

T

here are a few of the series that won’t be returning to your TV this fall ”V,” “Big Love”, “Better With You”, “Brothers & Sisters, and “The Event”. All these shows had one thing in common – they featured some really talented and gorgeous actresses, including Morena Baccarin, Sally Fields, Emily VanCamp and Elizabeth Mitchell. Interestingly enough, both Morena Baccarin and Emily VanCamp have quickly moved on to other shows this season, fresh on the heels of the cancellations of their shows. Morena Baccarin, who played sexy Alien Commander Anna on “V”, a remake of the 80’s TV show of the same name, was scooped up by Homeland, a Showtime series following Dexter this season. Baccarin is in some fine company this season, in terms of both talent and gorgeousness. Claire Danes plays a CIA operative who is convinced that Michael Brody (played by the sexy Damian Lewis), a freed prisoner of war and Baccarin’s missing husband (now there’s a power cou-

But Baccarin is not the only one from last years’ fall lineup to land a new series. Emily VanCamp made the jump from Brothers and Sisters to the lead in the upcoming drama series Revenge. While Homeland was somewhat based on an Israeli TV series, Revenge may well remind some viewers of The Count of Monte Cristo, a movie from the 40’s, but Revenge takes place in the Hamptons and Madeleine Stowe, a Golden Globe winning actress, plays VanCamp’s nemesis. HBO is launching Enlightened, a show featuring Laura Dern, playing Amy, whose path to self-destruction is turned around by a spiritual awakening. Dern is joined by Diane Ladd, who just so happens to be her mom in real life, as well as Luke Wilson and Tim Sharp. Mike White, who masterminded School of Rock and Dawson’s Creek is behind this series. Also keep an eye out for the return of Sarah Michelle Gellar, made famous by her starring role in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, in CW’s new thriller Ringer.

the Penny Marshall and Cindy Williams classic from the 80’s. Speaking of the 80’s, Charlie’s Angles is back on ABC, starring three lovely actresses - Minka Kelly, Annie Ilonzeh and Kate Prince. But that’s not all - CBS also has “Pan Am” on the charts, a show taking place in the 60’s featuring Christina Ricci and Kelli Garner, as flight attendants breaking out of the housewife mold to travel the world, having lots of drama, fun and romantic adventures. But we’re not done with the 60’s - the Playboy Club, a dramatic series set in Chicago is also part of CBS’s fall line up. The gorgeous Tony award winning actress Laura Benanti, stars as the first playboy bunny – ever. While acting is clearly Benanti’s first love, you can expect to see her dancing and singing in this series, because the Playboy club did it all back in the day. Amber Heard, Naturi Naughton, and Leah Renee are all slated to appear in the Playboy Club, bringing some new faces to the season. While the new season is starting, we’re also revving up for the upcoming 63rd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, and the much awaited walk down the red carpet, where many of the most fashionable Divas will be stirring up the crowd. This year you’ll find that thirty women have gotten nominations, including the Good Wife’s Julianna Marguilies, who’s up for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. But she’s up against Mariska Hargitay (from Law and Order), Emily Moss (from Mad Men), and Kathy Bates, the star of Harry’s Law. Speaking of Bridesmaids, Melissa McCarthy, one of the stars of “Mike & Molly” is up for Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series, but so is the Big C’s Laura Linney, who has already won a Golden Globe for the show.

music Josh Jamison, aka the Whammy Man, is the 14yr old lead guitarist and front man for New York City’s classic rock and blues band Movin Out. Take a listen to his original song “That Girl”. This single has all the right ingredients for a rock classic hit song. Some say his vibrant and catchy sound and stage presence is a cross between Aerosmith and Jimi Hendrix. Josh started his musical journey playing the drums for his church at the early age of four. He is a self taught multi-instrumentalist who plays the guitar, bass, piano, violin, trumpet and harmonica. On his 9th birthday Josh asked his father to buy him a guitar he saw on both the Guitar Center’s and Sam Ash’s catalogue. Since that day The Whammy Man has vowed to be one of the greatest rock and blues guitarists in history. His musical influences are many but his favorites are Chuck Berry, Aerosmith, Living Colour, and Jimi Hendrix. Presently, Josh Jamison is working on his EP at Broken Land Studios in New York. “I want to bring back the great rock music of the 60’s and 70’s “says Josh. “It’s truly a privilege and an immense pleasure to witness such natural talent.” states producer Alexandre Perez. “His guitar solos are absolutely awesome and his energy level is out of this world “says drummer and bassist Curtis “Kudos” Preston from the band Rocky Business. When Josh is not working out with his guitar or hanging with his band, he spends time teaching local kid’s guitar and drums for a non-profit Feed Your Mind Music. “A goal of mine has always been to help children in schools that do not have instruments to play, and with music I can do that” says Josh.

INTERNATIONAL FASHION WEEK

BFW

Brazil Fashion Week

The Three F’s of BFW 2011

BY TRACY CHANDLER

Brazil Fashion Week 2011: fabric, the five senses and the female form. Think layers upon layers of anything from chiffon, gauze, taffeta and crepe, to linen, denim, cotton and silk. Think designs that were made to be touched. Think catwalk shows that awakened more than what the eye could see. Think female, successful. Think sensual, think proud. The BAF catwalks did more than just present each designer’s new line for the forthcoming season. BAF was more like an experiment to see just how far fashion can go in terms of igniting the fire across all five human senses at once. Sound, smell, taste and touch were all just as much a part of the BAF as sight was and much of what we have to look forward to regarding this season’s designs extends way beyond that of mere visual pleasure. “It’s amazing to be female,” was the clear message of the week, with each designer celebrating something very specific about what it means to be a woman in 2011 in turn. Four of the best that Argentina has to offer the fashion world (Bomparola, Otero, Senra

32

INTERNATIONAL FASHION WEEK VIVRANT LIFE and Desiderata) made their individual stamps on the event in style and we have managed to capture a little of their magic for you here below. Smack on some red lips, have fun with layers and odd-cuts and avoid leaving the house without smelling good enough to eat and you’ll be well on your way to mirroring what the female population are going to be stepping into as the Latin springtime approaches. For complete details on the BAF Look, keep reading and get step into Argentine sass in no time.

Bomparola

Fabric: Bomparola played with sexy seethrough crepe on the top half of the body and tapered linens and cottons on the bottom. Lines and cuts were straight and bold. Shapes and designs highlighted large blocks of color in asymmetrical patterns without fear. The five senses: Live techno DJs joined the models on the catwalk to add to the power and intensity of the designs in the moment. Thinking female: Heels, heels and even more heels. The higher the heel, the sexier the woman, particularly when Bomparola celebrates the older female age-bracket as she does with this collection. If you don’t own a pair of nude heels, now is the time to get some.

Otero

Fabric: These designs combined heavy cottons and denim fabrics in dark blues, striking whites and sensual greys to create simple designs for the petite woman. The five senses: The live harp musician sharing the catwalk with the models added to the overall magical feel of the event. Thinking female: Cute dresses and raised platforms emphasized a love of female youth and eccentricity. Color and design was simple so that accessories and shoes can soak up the limelight.

Senra

Fabric: clear luminous colors, including stained

whites, neutrals, butters, beige and raw vanilla. He played with natural silks, organza and cotton. The detailing of each design incorporated seeds and other organic elements which Senra worked with by hand, giving each design and personal touch. The five senses: The wind machines used during the show blew wonderful scents created by Natura across the catwalk. The music and live voice of Katherine Jenkis added a deeper sensitivity to the work, as did the small bags of crystallized fruit from Salta given as a runway gift to accompany his work and carry us through his collection across the five senses. Thinking female: - Being a woman in Senra’s collection is reminiscent of sirens and nymphs of nature from the forest. Being a woman in Senra’s eyes is earthy, pure and beautiful in an ethereal way.

Desiderata

Fabric: - Strawberry, vibrant greens, deep blues and a sophisticated black dominated the runway. A wonderful mixture was captured via very fine voile, textured canvas, rustic lines and elegant/expensive castoffs of odd bits of materials which gave the designs their personalities. Every single design focused on the use of denim, everything from bleach denim to intense blue. The five senses: Curly blonde hair, bobbing with vibrancy and strong red lips harked back to the 70s. The pumping music and the high feminine energy racing down the catwalk, had people dancing in their seats. Thinking female: - In many ways, the simple, chic look encapsulated by Desiderata had a real French look about it and oozed urban sass. The easy chic essence of the designs played between what is considered to be masculine and feminine and definitely left all women at the runway feeling young, empowered and ready to take life by the reins.

MIAMI FASHION WEEK RECAP

Hot and haute on the beach for Miami’s Fashion Week was somewhat the theme this year. The flavor of pucci mixed with South American folklore and military or industrial inspired hardware were some reoccurring themes for Swim 2012

S

o many designers explored the vivacious colors of the season in rich reds and oranges as well as turquoise and deep sea blues. The range was only accented but the rainbows and golden trims elaborate cover ups and low low low hip hugger bottoms. Metal clasps that you usually see on a handbags or large J hooks like on Hermez luggage were adornments in several of the collections. Another growing theme is the asymmetrical and the ever emerging monokini. Sexy but modest both these silhouettes give the wearer the ability to show off her highest assets and down play others. When you combine all in one seasons collections it is important to notice the most important complementary element, the cover up. This season the mini skirt won over the long flowing caftans and dashikis. Feel free to hit the beach with the mini as your biggest asset.

The 2012 collection was a celebration of sexy, sultry summer nights, combining intense colors with the rhythm and feel of Cuban dances and traditions. Showing a total of 78 looks, the show consisted of scenes’ grouping together the different sub collections. Starting off the show was “Paseo del Malecon” taking the audience for a journey along the coastline. National brands like Custo Barcelona, Red Carter, and Pistol Panties who are all vying for a spot in our wet and wild wardrobe. The high waisted look is coming soon to a swimming suit near you thanks to the influences of Mara Hoffman and Lisa Blue. A.Che painted their models up like tribal warriors to don their swimwear. To go along with the war paint, A.Che featured animal prints and funky monokinis, ending the shows for that day with a primal feel.

COSMETIC TRENDS HIGHLIGHTING FALL 2011- by Martina Micko

As we roll into fall, one forgets about their regular beauty routine. Especially with the warm rays, golden tans, and sunkissed hair, it is easy just to add mascara and go on about our day. With the arrival of fall, it is time to add small adjustments to our makeup routine, and add some glam with hints of summer still there. To start, sun kissed bodies and hair are one of the perks of summer. It is easy to keep the glow throughout fall. Keep skin moisturized for a longer tan. A faux tan is easy to create as well. With a wide variety of bronzers out there, we can all be sun kissed in no time. Try bronzers that are more solid rather than sparkles, for those will give a more natural ‘sun kissed’ look. Highlight where the sun would naturally hit- the nose, cheeks and high-cheekbones.

The same trends are in for fall, coral- a fiery red with a orange finish. “The thing I love about bright pink lips is that they’re ultra-feminine, but very graphic and modern at the same time,” says makeup artist Rachel Goodwin, if you have a warm complexion, opt for a cooler pink. If your skin is cool like Gwen Stefani, a warmer, redder pink will work best. “Layering a hot pink lip stain under your lipstick will help it last all day,” Goodwin adds.

To set the bronzed skin, a glowy pink blush is best. Blush should look natural. “I love this shade on everyone, “says makeup artist Amy Nadine, “pick a warm shade with a hint of shimmer.” Unlike bronzer, cool blush tones look more artificial; while shimmer helps draw attention to the cheeks. Statement blush has been spotted on the runways off Calvin Klein, DKNY, Stella McCartney and Versace. Blush should be the finishing touch, adding the last hint of color to complete the look. Nadine suggests layering. “Smile to find the apples of your cheeks, then rub in a cream blush with your finger tips, really taking time to blend the edges. Finish by swirling a pink powder across the entire cheekbone. It will intensify the color and keep it from rubbing off.” A popular blush has always been NARS blush in Orgasm, a perfect pinky-peach flush and subtly highlights with accents of golden shimmer. “Nude lips give an artful contrast to exaggerated blush and keep focus on the skin,” says Pat McGrath, creative design director of P&G Beauty.

A new trend that has been seen on the Fall 2011 runways is rich metal eyes. “The look is magical, like you’re in a fairy tale,” says makeup artist Lucia Pica, who worked the makeup at Erin Fetherston. Other designers that rocked the trend were Derek Lam, Fendi, Peter Son and Rotarte. The trend makes eyes stand out and gives a high shine look. Silver, gold and silver hues look best on everyone and are the most glamorous, that wear well on all skin tones- from light to dark. The look is very edgy and glamorous, it can be dressed up or down. Start with a touch of metallic shadow to the inner corners of the eyes, which instantly opens the eye making it appear bigger. Leave the look as it is with a touch of eyeliner and mascara for a everyday look. For more edge, work the metallic shadow all over the eye lid, then blend with eyeliner and top of with mascara.

Another popular trend of summer of bold lipstick. Colors such as coral and fuchsia were a big hit with bronzed skin.

With small tweeks here and there in our makeup routine, one can look glamorous than ever. A touch of sparkle on the eyes, some bold blush and a touch of nude lipstick is all that is needed this fall for a complete look.

BANGED OUT: there’s nothing wrong with adding a little color to your bang for a fresh look or to match an outfit. SHORT & SWEEP: Either it’s up or down your short hair can be coiffure with a little mouse or just a bit of extra curl. LONG LOCKS: must be free flowing and look full and healthy. TIPS ON STYLE: Kevin Mancuso

BEAUTY Kevin Mancuso, Nexxus Creative Director

Big hair tends to get a bad rap, but voluminous blow outs have been reincarnated on the red carpet in a softer, more natural way. Favored for events and premiers alike by celebs like Rachel McAdams and Mila Kunis, the updated style captivates attention with lots of movement that looks effortlessly glamorous. “The key to a red carpet worthy, full-volume blow out is a lot of lift and flexibility. The look should be defined, yet touchably soft with ample movement – never stiff.” – Kevin Mancuso, Nexxus Creative Director There are four things that affect hair volume including its diameter, curvature, density and of course, the styling products used on it. While the first three of these factors are determined by genetics, women with even the finest of hair can achieve gorgeous, full-bodied locks with the right highperformance products. Help your readers amplify their styles with these volume boosting tips from Nexxus Salon Hair Care and Nexxus Creative Director Kevin Mancuso: Tip #1: “Clear” Things Up The “right” shampoo varies from person to person. Women looking to add volume should choose a clear formula like Nexxus Diametress Luscious Volumizing Shampoo. It contains a high concentration of Panthenol, which penetrates the hair shaft from within to plump tresses and gently remove dulling impurities. Tip #2: Condition Sparingly If you have super fine hair, you may want to skip conditioning all together. Instead, opt for a hydrating styler like Nexxus Mousse Plus Volumizing Foam Styler. The lightweight, alcohol-free formula actually contains a conditioning agent, so hair receives the moisturization it needs while simultaneously increasing body and fullness. Tip #3: Transform Your Texture Thick, curly hair tends to stand up straighter at the root, giving it more volume than straight, fine locks. A fast way to transform limp hair that doesn’t support itself is to use your fingers to massage the root area after applying mouse. This roughs the cuticle up as opposed polishing it with a brush which can cause hair to collapse more easily.

Green Recovery : Ecological Products To Help Restore Yourself After A Season of Summer Fun

BEAUTY

by Jennifer Ross Alhough summer is arguably the most enjoyable season of the year, it can also wreak havoc on your body. Here are a few eco-friendly solutions to some stubborn beauty woes that may arise as a result of too much fun in the sun. Problem – Dry, Sun Damaged Hair Solution –Phyto Phytodensium Anti-Aging Serum Sure, the sun can give your locks natural, shiny highlights, but you are prematurely aging your hair with UVA/UVB rays. And sure, both the pool and ocean can give you those surfer girl beach waves everyone covets during the summer months, but in the end all of that chlorine and salt water is drying out your hair, making it dull and brittle. Do yourself a favor and nurse your hair back to health this fall with Phyto’s Phytodensium Anti-Aging Serum. This light weight elixir strengthens with Pro-vitamins B5 and B6 and helps to prevent any further hair damage with tyrosine derivative, which slows down the appearance of gray hair by boosting melanin production. Shake well and work a few drops into towel dried hair post shampoo and conditioning. Make sure to comb through hair to make sure the serum is evenly allotted and do not rinse. You may also apply this product to the roots of your hair as a styling aid/ protective coating before you put any heat to it. The end result should be healthier, shinier, more manageable, youthful looking hair. Problem – Hyper Pigmentation Solution – Caudalie Vinoperfect Radiance Serum One of the best parts of the summer for most people(Not this friendly ghost writing this here article) is getting that golden tan that seems to make all of your flaws disappear whilst enhancing your natural beauty (While wearing a sturdy SPF of course!) Unfortunately, sometimes that sunkist glow can turn into an uneven skin tone as it fades away during those post summer months. Investing in a product like Caudalie’s Vinoperfect Radiance Serum will not only help even out your skin tone, but provide you with excellent antiaging benefits as well. Vinoperfect’s most active ingredient, Viniferine is a patented ingredient derived from the sap of grape vine stalks, which enhances radiance and helps to banishes those stubborn dark spots all in one shot. Just smooth two or three drops worth all over your face and decolette before you put on your moisturizer in the AM and PM. Vinoperfect works really well as a natural glow enducing makeup primer as well! continued on page 163

FALL FASHION

MEGA TRENDS 2011 Martina Micko

Bold graphics and colors have been the latest trend. Colored tops and bottoms have been the ideal fashion for summer, luckily the fun trend has carried into Fall 2011, making it more welcoming. Graphics and prints have been all over the runway. Big designers- Marc Jacobs and Diane von Furstenberg, have put polka dots on their runway. If you’re bold as them- dots head to toe, go for it! For a more subtle look at a sheer polka dot top to a pair of jeans or use the fun print in accessories, such as a bag or shoes. Designers have also been using a lot of patterns, especially Prada and Givenchy, where they feature animals. For example, bird prints have been the hit on sheer tops, creating a abstract design. Mosaic patterns inspired by the 60’s are also in style, as seen on the runways off Marni and Jonathan Saunders. Colors were seen all over the runway, including the front row. Bright pants were a hit with DKNY; they’re an easy way to make winter’s dark layers look fresh and fun. Pair with a simple sweater or graphic top, the look is complete. Balenciaga sported bold colored pants and matched them with bold tops.

64

V!

Texture is back. Lace has been spotted all over the runway, from classic black to colored. The trend is classic, yet flirty. Bluemarine and Marc Jacobs had stylish lace dresses that were perfect for an evening out. Peek a boo lace tops are perfect for fall, for example loose tops or dresses with a lace back or hints of lace. Another fun texture is animal prints. Snakeskin handbags are a must for fall. From sling bags to clutches, one can’t go wrong with the trend, and it looks great paired with anything. Plaid is an ongoing trend. A classic way to wear it is a plaid button down shirt. This season, the trend has been spotted on coats as well as dresses in different shades from classic red to shades of brown. With some familiar trends and some new ones, this fall should be very fashionable. For key fashion ideas while shopping think- bold colors, prints, and animals!

Kareen Borgella is a NYC based fashion designer. Originally a pre-med student at Hofstra University in 1998, Kareen took up evening sculpting and art courses as a way to fulfill her creative side, not knowing that learning about the intricate elements of form and proportion would eventually lead to a successful career in fashion design. Kareen’s road to success has been a picture of endless possibilities. During her internship at Espirit, Kareen landed a position at Golden Touch, the licensed based company for Dots and Joyce Leslie, where she learned everything from designing and development to dye techniques. As Kareen’s credibility grew, so did her passion for developing her very own collection. Kareen’s goal was always to design, but believes that the technical aspect has not only contributed to her knowledge of constructing clothes to perfectly fit the body, but also how to properly select fabrics and implement different finishes to create beautiful clothing. In 2010, after years of designing for other fashion brands, Kareen has developed a luxury contemporary line of her own for women. THE DRESS - The business woman’s staple. Form fitting and powerful the dress can show both sides of a woman. Sexy cuts with business accents the dress has been evolving and revolutionizing the work dress environment. Wearing a dress is no longer just feminine it is a power move.

THE CASUAL TOP

THE CASUAL TOP - knowing how and when to wear this piece to the office will present a challenge. It’s easy for a casual Friday but one might also wear it under a power suit to give it a toned down look or with a lace or frilly skirt to offer a balance for the office look. Either or the use of the casual top should not be abused. Characters are fun but may not be perceived well in a more corporate office.

High Heel Heaven The evolution of the high heel has come a long way. Whether stepping out for errands or onto the red carpet, this year women preferred 5-inch heels over flats. Gone are the days of basic pumps, ladies are in love with Louboutin. Chunky platforms, ankle boots and Mary Janes as high as humanly possible. Despite of the obvious suffering and impracticality of a towering high heel, women like to play on the dangerous side of fashion. Whether high heels might likewise affect the wearer’s biomechanics and injury risk has received little scientific attention, millions of women wear heels almost every day. Towering platforms, extreme wedges, and treacherous stilettos have flooded the marketplace in recent months, and most every designer and celebrity seems to be doing their part to participate in the trend. Runways, red carpets, and glossy magazine spreads have all been inundated with the look. Ever the style catalyst, Lady Gaga donned Alexander McQueen’s 12inch heels in her “Bad Romance” music video after three professional runway models refused to wear them on the runway last fall.

VIVRANT FEATURE

Designer Profiles VEDA

VEDA derives its unique worldly sensibility from the endless travel of designer, Lyndsey D. Butler. Growing up, the Butler family split their time between Texas and their ranch in Argentina. Before graduating from NYU in 2005 Lyndsey had already began following her calling to fashion. First, working in New York City and, within a few years, moving to Hollywood to further pursue her career. All of these stops along her journey have combined to help her create her unique aesthetic message; a decidedly urbane interpretation of her North and South American cowgirl roots.

BROCHU WALKER

VEDA, her first venture, launched for Spring 2008 is a collection dedicated to leather and all of its’ possibilities. The range of leather garments and accessories varies in styling from archetypal leather jackets to innovative and previously unseen ideas in leather. The constant through out the collection is the sumptuousness of the leather and the sophisticated ease of the designs. VEDA is the fashionista’s answer to the Holy Grail search for the perfect leather jacket.

After honing their skills at various New York fashion companies, Lisa Brochu and Lauren Walker launched the BROCHU WALKER collection in February 2008. The trendsetting duo identified a void in the market for effortless, wearable, chic basics that appealed to women who had outgrown contemporary designs. BROCHU WALKER is built on the principal of layering and wrapping. The interplay between texture and tonality, classic silhouettes with unexpected details and varied proportion are what make the BROCHU WALKER collection unique. They are versatile pieces that a woman can put her individual stamp on. BROCHU WALKER clothing can be worn with heels, a favorite pair of jeans, at the beach or when lounging at home. It’s all about stylish versatility and ease...wearable runway.

Anna Sheffield is a New York-based designer who hails from Northern New Mexico. A distinct aesthetic emerges in her work from the rich urbane surroundings and culture of New York City. While Anna’s penchant for the spare, hewn and intrinsic beauty was imparted by the mores and surrounds of the Southwest- seemingly disparate influences culminate in her unique vantage point.

M. PATMOS

VIVRANT FEATURE

ANN SHEFFIELD

A nomadic, cross-cultural rearing (with stints in Saudi Arabia and California) and a devotion to fine arts (including formal training in costume design as well as welding & blacksmithing) inform Anna‘s endeavors past & present. Honing these divergent interests has rendered her a creative talent who works with ease on multiple platforms. In jewelry, she designs the haute-costume jewelry line Bing Bang, as well as her namesake line which includes the Bespoke collection of handcrafted pieces and extends into the realm of Fine jewelry with sterling, gold and precious stones. Keepsakes, heirlooms and talismans – all objects full of native beauty and secret meaning – are recurring themes in her work.

Marcia Patmos, of M.PATMOS, honed her craft at the Rhode Island School of Design, but she has always had design in her blood. As a child, Marcia learned how to make or repurpose just about anything from her grandmother, who spent most of her time sewing, knitting and crocheting. After working in the New York fashion industry for several years, Marcia and her friend Tina Lutz came together to start LUTZ & PATMOS, a timeless luxury collection of sweaters, separates and accessories that merged fashion with art and design. After 10 successful years in business, Tina and Marcia’s final season was the Fall 2010 line. For the new M.PATMOS collection, Marcia continues to be inspired by art, architecture and design. She collects travel mementos, artwork and flea market finds. For M.PATMOS, Marcia uses her touch to create beautiful, relevant clothing that is both special and comfortable. For her, change starts with very small things, and the importance of design is to open minds to new things, making for endless possibilities.

Problem – Dehydrated Skin Solution – Korres’ Yogurt Mask Many people feel as though one of the perks of laying out in the sun all summer is drying up all of that excess oil and/or those stubborn summer time breakouts . That approach may work for awhile, but in the end you are doing much more damage than good to your skin, including dehydrating it. Try Korres Yogurt Mask to bring life and luster back into that tired summer skin. Yogurt has been used by the Greeks for hundreds of years as a go to remedy for skin in delicate condition in need of a quick and healthy moisture boost. Yogurt and watercress smooth the skin, while macademia nut oil and olive oil bring a burst of hydration back into that dull, lifeless, sun beaten skin. Use once or twice a week for 10 to 15 minutes for softer, more supple hydration. Problem – Callused Feet Solution - Carol’s Daughters’ Almond Cookie Sea Salt Body Scrub I don’t know about you, but I spend a good portion of the summer bare foot. Whether it be hanging out by the pool, running around on the beach, or simply just chilling on my NYC rooftop, my feet take a good beating during the summer months. The Result - Callused feet that smell anything but pretty. The Cure – Carol’s Daughter’s Almond Cookie Sea Salt Body Scrub. This all natural body scrub which contains several essential oils within its special sea salt blend, will not only wear away all of that harsh roughage on the bottom of your feet, but you will walk away (no pun intended) smelling like almonds and avocado! With every bathing, just smooth the scrub all over each foot for smoother, softer appendages. It is up to you whether or not you want to apply the scrub pre- cleansing or while immersed in water. However, applying the product to dry skin will make it more effective.

But what about the supporting actresses, well there’s a lot going on. The Good Wife has made a great showing - Archie Panjabi, who’s gotten the nod for her supporting role as the mysterious Kalinda Sharma, and Christine Baranski, who plays Diane Lockhart, the tough as nails partner with a heart of platinum is also up for the Emmy. The ladies of comedy shine this season too, with Jane Lynch, AKA Sue Sylvester the twisted cheerleading coach on Glee, and Betty White, a classic by anyone’s standards, is up for her role as Elka Ostrovsky, the multi dimensional, and super funny caretaker in Hot in Cleveland. Personally I can’t wait to see how that plays out.

VIVRANT FEATURE

continued from page 63

All in all it should be a very interesting September in TV land, whether that’s checking out the new fall lineup, or catching the action on the red carpet.

Gone but Never Forgotten ALEXANDER MCQUEEN

17 March 1969 – 11 February 2010 Alexander McQueen is a legend never forgotten for his tremedos and impactful contribution to Fashion. His noted achievements include four British Designer of the Year awards (1996, 1997, 2001 and 2003), as well as the CFDA’s International Designer of the Year award in 2003. The skills he learned as an apprentice on Savile Row helped earn him a reputation in the fashion world as an expert in creating an impeccably tailored look.

Amy Winehouse’s 2003 debut album, Frank, was critically successful in the UK and was nominated for the Mercury Prize. Her 2006 follow-up album, Back to Black, led to six Grammy Award nominations and five wins, tying the then record for the most wins by a female artist in a single night, and made Winehouse the first British female to win five Grammys, including three of the “Big Four”: Best New Artist, Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Winehouse died of alcohol poisoning on 23 July 2011. Her album Back to Black subsequently became the UK’s best selling album so far of the 21st century

NAMOI SIMS

March 30, 1948 - August 1, 2009 Naomi Sims widely credited as being the first African American supermodel. Sims began college after winning a scholarship to the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, while also taking night classes in psychology at New York University. Her early attempts to get modeling work through established agencies were frustrated by racial prejudice, with some agencies telling her that her skin was too dark. Her first career breakthrough came after she decided to sidestep the agencies and go directly to fashion photographers and Gosta Peterson, a photographer for The New York Times, agreed to photograph her for the cover of the paper’s August 1967 fashion supplement. She also appeared on the cover of the October 17, 1969 issue of Life magazine. This was the first African American model on the cover of the magazine.

STEVE JOBS February 24, 1955 – October 5, 2011 Steve Jobs experimented with different pursuits before starting Apple Computers with Stephen Wozniak in the Jobs’ family garage. Apple’s revolutionary products, which include the iPod, iPhone and iPad, are now seen as dictating the evolution of modern technology. While Jobs has always been an intelligent and innovative thinker, his youth was riddled with frustrations over formal schooling. In elementary school he was a prankster whose fourth grade teacher needed to bribe him to study. Much like Steve Jobs instigated Apple’s success in the 1970s, he is credited with revitalizing the company in the 1990s. With a new management team, altered stock options, and a self-imposed annual salary of $1 a year, Jobs put Apple back on track. His ingenious products such as the iMac, effective branding campaigns, and stylish designs caught the attention of consumers once again
