River Revitalization Plan for

KUALA KANGSAR Royal Town

Site Area

Design Area

Location

Kuala Kangsar, Perak

Year

2017

13

The project is an urban planning for Kuala Kangsar town along Sungai Perak riverfront. The river used to be the beating heart of the city during feudal times, serving as a major means of transportation, trade and logistics for the city. By serving as the metaphorical heart, it sends out pulses of activities throughout the city, expanding outward from the river to the old town as well as Mukim Sayong.

Kuala Kangsar is the royal town of Perak, Malaysia. It is located at the downstream of Kangsar River where it joins the Perak river, approximately 25 km (16 miles) northwest of Ipoh, Perak’s capital, and 98 km (61 miles) southeast of George Town, Penang. It is the main town in the administrative district of Kuala Kangsar. It is about 235 km from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The activities on Kangsar River decrease after 1926 when monsoon flood damage the river edge and the Sultan moves his castle and his people to Bukit Chandan Mountain. The revitalisation of Kuala Kangsar Riverfront aim to bring back the life where people gather around Kangsar River to have activities. Several technology and landscape solutions are proposed to apply to improve the quality of the river water quality and river edge activities.

The master plan was the outcome of proposed urban planning of Kuala Kangsar riverfront. Mixed use waterfronts and adjacent municipal centers while conserving natural forest areas and establishing a continous public greenway corridor for the next 100 years. The riverfront greenway corridor is divided into four segments;Built riverfronts, linear riverfronts parks, community parks and natural area. The riverfront greenway corridoe along their entire shoreline serves as continou open space along the riverfront that provides public access, recreation, and habitat protection.

Semungkis Permaculture Farm project is a permaculture approach trasfomation plan for existing urban agriculture farm located at Hulu Langat, Selangor. The farm also distribute the greens locally and control the entire process from seed to store. The project is to plan a new plan with permaculture practices within the existing unit and an new undeveloped unit.

The convergence of planning and the ideas is translated following the natural clam pattern shows it’s flow starting from the bottom-point area which is the “highly dependent area” and considered as the core center of the project. While the translation in design through the spaces is based on the permaculture zoning by adapting the natural pattern movement.

The movement at the sites are then divided into loops diverging from the bottom point which are: 0/1 2 3 4 5

Introduction of Exibition theme

Revitalization plan

The exibition project aims to revitalize and transform Kuala Kangsar into a major tourism city. The major issue stopping this revitalization goal is the lack of social activities within the town. In order to draw tourists in, introduction new activities as well as invigorating existing ones into the daily lives of the town’s inhabitants. The design concept is ‘NADI’ , or pulse. The goal is to recreate the imagery of Kuala Kangsar in its feudal times through the reintroduction of river-based activities within and around the Perak River. By revitalizing the river, the influx of activities within the river as well as its riverfronts will create a pulsing effect, sending out and spreading waves of activities throughout the town, from the river expanding outwards into other part in the city of Kuala Kangsar.
