EARLY DAYS: HIV AND MĀORI In the initial stages of the HIV epidemic, often when Māori died from AIDS, the tūpāpaku (deceased) were buried half in and half out of the urupa out of fear that HIV would seep through the whenua and infect the iwi. There were times when people were buried in lead-lined coffins and being refused burial in the urupa. The original Māori Gay and Lesbian Hui komiti whakahaere recognised that education about HIV was needed, both for members of the Takatāpui communities and their whānau, hapū and iwi. Background to Hui Takatāpui THE FIRST HUI In 1986, members of the Takatāpui community organised the inaugural Māori Gay and Lesbian Hui, in response to the growing HIV epidemic. At the time, little was known about HIV and how it was transmitted, which led to wide stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV. The first hui was aimed at addressing community concerns about HIV. The kaupapa of the hui was to establish strategies to educate Māori at risk and their wider whānau about HIV and AIDS awareness, develop initiatives aimed at preventing HIV transmission, and to educate the wider whānau about HIV and to combat stigma and discrimination. At this hui, it was reported that those present felt that if a person could feel pride in being a member of the rainbow communities and being Māori, that a strong community could be developed to make it easier to come together to help spread the kaupapa.
GET IT ON! INVOLVEMENT Get it On! recognises that gay and bisexual men, the people most at risk of HIV in New Zealand, are influenced by their partners, whānau, friends, colleagues, employers and the environment in which they live. While it is essential that Get it On! reaches and affects all gay and bisexual men living in Aotearoa, it is also necessary to reach the people who can support, influence and enable Takatāpui tane to use condoms and lube for sex every time. Get it On! is proud to be involved in this event. Even after 25 years Hui Takatāpui continues to be about developing strong communities that are HIV resilient. Every year, the hui is hosted in a different region of Aotearoa and we are excited to be working with the local hapū and whānau of Panguru, Hokianga to bring this event to you. The development of a condom culture across all population groups in our country will reduce the prevalence of HIV and increase sexual health and well-being for Aotearoa New Zealand overall. THE FIRST MĀORI TO WRITE OF TAKATĀPUI WAS TE RANGIKAHEKE IN HIS ACCOUNT OF THE FAMOUS LOVE STORY OF HINEMOA AND TUTĀNEKAI. IN HIS STORY HE ACKNOWLEDGES THE INTIMATE BOND BETWEEN TUTĀNEKAI AND TIKI, DESCRIBING TIKI AS ‘HOA TAKATĀPUI’. MISSIONARIES CHANGED THE MEANING OF THEIR RELATIONSHIP FROM CLOSE, INTIMATE FRIENDS TO MASTER AND SLAVE. TAKATĀPUI TODAY
AT THE FIRST HUI, RESEARCHERS NGAHUIA TE AWEKOTUKU AND LEE SMITH BRAINSTORMED WITH THEIR COLLEAGUES AND PRESENTED THE WORD ‘TAKATĀPUI’. IT WAS AT THIS HUI THAT THE TERM TAKATĀPUI WAS ESTABLISHED AS AN IDENTITY FOR GAY AND BISEXUAL MĀORI AND IT HAS BECOME A WIDELY IDENTIFIED TERM ACROSS AOTEAROA. TODAY, THE TERM TAKATĀPUI ENCOMPASSES TAKATĀPUI TĀNE, TAKATĀPUI WAHINE, WHAKAWAHINE, AND TANGATA IRA TĀNE. TAKATĀPUI INCLUDES MĀORI ACROSS THE ENTIRE RAINBOW SPECTRUM; GAY, LESBIAN, TRANSGENDER, BISEXUAL, QUEER, INTERSEX, DRAG QUEEN, CAMP, BICURIOUS ETC

HUI TAKATĀPUI 2012 Hui Takatāpui 2012 is an opportunity to celebrate and strengthen the sexual and gender diversity of Māori, especially rangatahi. Hui Takatāpui 2012 will focus on the health and well-being of Māori and aims to increase Māori support for HIV prevention as well as providing leadership and advice on issues for Takatāpui. Hui Takatāpui 2012 will also provide opportunities for Māori to network, have fun, play sport and be entertained in a safe and supportive social environment. As part of Whānau Oranga, we are encouraging each attendee to bring one person, significant other, parent, sibling, grandparent or child. This person will not have to pay to attend the hui as long as one registration is paid.
The theme of Hui Takatāpui 2012 is ‘Te Rito’ “Hutia te rito o te harakeke. Kei hea te komako e ko? Ki mai nei ki ahau. He aha te mea nui ki tenei ao? Māku e ki atu. He tangata, he tangata, he tangata. “If you were to pluck out the centre of the flax bush, where would the bellbird sing? If you were to ask me "What is the most important thing in the world?" I would reply, "That it is people, people, people." This sharing of knowledge through coming together is a key part of Hui Takatāpui 2012, as well as being able to rekindle and reaffirm our relationships amongst the Takatāpui community.
