FOREWORD

Broader environment focus in response to farmer feedback

W

elcome to your Official Guide to the 2019 Effluent & Environment Expo. Keep it handy in your farm office or dairy shed so you can refer to it when you need advice or to consider effluent management solutions for your farm business. We would love you to join us at the Effluent & Environment Expo at Mystery Creek on November 19 and 20. It’s a free event for farmers and builds on the success of the inaugural Expo at Mystery Creek in 2018. Expo organiser Amanda Hodgson says the decision to expand the Expo to include a broader environment emphasis has been welcomed by farmers who are searching for more answers on managing their total environmental footprint, including effluent management. “Management of a farm’s total environment is under the spotlight more than ever so farmers are asking for wider solutions than just how to manage effluent around their dairies or dairy housing systems,” she says. “Effluent management is still the Expo’s primary focus for now, but we saw potential to broaden that out to offer farmers advice, products and services across the entire farm environment package. This is the really just the start of a journey,” Hodgson says. The new brand and logo capture the broader focus of the Expo and have also appealed to other livestock farming sectors and the companies that service them. This year’s Expo will follow a similar format to the highly successful 2018 event and remain free for farmers to attend, thanks to the generosity of sponsors Fonterra FarmSource, Rabobank, DairyNZ, Waikato Regional Council, Bay of Plenty Regional Council, Mystery Creek, and official media partner, NZ Dairy Exporter.

2019

Nearly 100 exhibitors will feature their products and services over both days from 8.30am to 3.30pm, all inside the Events Centre at Mystery Creek. Based on the positive feedback from farmers who attended last year’s Expo, organisers have confirmed several industry expert speakers covering a range of effluent management topics as well as company sponsored sessions where exhibitors present on their individual products and services. These seminars are in a separate area off the side of the Events Centre, so farmers can move easily between them and the exhibitor sites area. This year, organisers have also added four exciting speakers who will challenge every day thinking on farming and people management. Former All Blacks coach Sir Graham Henry will present a keynote address about 4pm on the Expo’s opening day, Tuesday, November 19. The full programme of speakers is on pages 6 to 7 of this Guide so you can prepare for your visit. A full list of exhibitors and site plan is available on pages 8 and 9 of your Official Guide. There are food stalls and coffee carts operating on both days of the Expo. A bar will also be open from about 3pm on Tuesday, leading into the keynote address from Sir Graham Henry. More? Environmental protections at the shed and beyond

here are more than 650 dairy farms in the Bay of Plenty which are home to more than 190,000 dairy cows. For the famers managing the effluent from these girls, and who are looking to upgrade old systems which are no longer fit for purpose, finding the right cost effective solution that meets the rules and the needs of their operation is a big decision. Regulatory Compliance Specialist Steve Pickles attended the expo last year on behalf of the Bay of 10

Plenty Regional Council and says there’s a heap of new technology and systems that have become available to farmers over the last few years. The expo brings the suppliers, industry and regulators into the same room so farmers can get their questions answered on the spot. “The environmental regulations are getting more complex, with a greater focus on protecting water and soil health. Equally though the technology is getting smarter. We’re here to help farmers

understand the current rules, as well as what may be coming through Central Government Policy changes, and help farmers consider how the various options they’re looking at will comply. We understand that every farm is different and that farmers are looking for a solution that will do a good job, ensure good business continuity and secure a long consent,” he says. This year’s expo is expanding beyond just effluent management. Another key focus area in the Bay of Effluent Expo Guide

2019

Plenty is around better management of water takes. For dairying, water is mainly taken for dairy shed use, milk cooling and stock water. Some also use water to irrigate pasture. Recent rule changes will require most dairy farmers to install a water meter and monitor their water use, and some farmers may be required to obtain a resource consent for their water use. Staff will be on hand at the Expo to explain the rules and help farmers understand what they need to do. Throughout the Bay of Plenty most water quality monitoring sites are showing stable or improving trends across measurable attributes like E.Coli bacteria and nitrogen. Despite the overall stable or improving trends though, not all of the region is in a good state. Team Leader of the Western

Catchments Hamish Dean says that in some catchments, where there are declining trends or extremely sensitive receiving environments such as estuaries and lakes, considerable reductions in nutrients and other contaminants are required. “To stop the decline in ecosystem health and make water safe for swimming in or gathering kaimoana, some farmers will need to implement better environmental practices on the land. Our Land Management teams offer advice and support to farmers wanting to fence waterways, create treatment wetlands, identify and manage critical source areas and protect biodiversity. In our Focus Catchments we can offer very generous and flexible funding for high priority actions which will help to improve water quality, says Dean. 11

Protecting our waterways and wetlands on farms is a major motivator for effective effluent management.

Expo better in industry hands By: Mark Gasquione

W

hen Waikato Regional Council launched the Effluent Expo in February 2011, our goal was simple – to provide farmers with a one-stop shop for easy and free access to the information they needed to manage dairy effluent. Planning for the expo stemmed from repeated enquiries received by the regional council on effluent systems, as well as a survey on what farmers wanted to know about effluent storage. We handed the expo’s reins to industry two years ago because we felt the message was best coming from within industry rather than council. But that original goal of being a one-stop-shop for 12

farmers still remains, and it’s the reason why we continue to get behind this event as a sponsor. It’s especially exciting to see the expo expand this year to include information for farmers on biosecurity. With disease and pests a very real threat to farms in the Waikato, on farm biosecurity is more important than ever. Our biosecurity officers will be at the event, and you’ll find them on the Ministry for Primary Industries site. And what will you get by visiting the regional council’s site this year? Our experienced staff will be available to answer questions farmers might have about everything from permitted activities to resource consents, on farm biosecurity as well as the proposed plan change for the Waikato and Waipā rivers. accidents can happen, farmers do have a number “While of ways they can reduce the risk to the environment. ” It’s a great forum for people wanting to have an informal chat with us, especially if you’re struggling to find who to talk to about on farm improvements. This might especially be the case for those farmers who’ve had an inspection and need more advice. Total effluent management is about more than storage. It’s about finding ways to better use this resource on farm, as well as looking at it within the wider context of your business. Irrigation practices remain a big concern for the regional council, because farmers with less than seven days’ storage based on two milkings per day are often forced to irrigate in unsuitable conditions, like we’ve experienced over winter and spring. This can increase the risk of waterways becoming unnecessarily polluted. Other factors that cause issues with irrigation are as simple as the setup of the irrigator or the irrigator struggling because of poor pump

pressure or maintenance. There are options for farmers, and council staff at this year’s Effluent Expo can discuss storage options with farmers and how they can avoid illegal discharges of dairy effluent. While accidents can happen, farmers do have a number of ways they can reduce the risk to the environment. If an accident happens we encourage farmers to call our farming services team for advice on how to mitigate the risk to the environment. At the very least it’s important to ensure the waterways are protected from any effluent related accident. Find Waikato Regional Council at site 52 in the main pavilion at Mystery Creek Events Centre, November 19-20. • Mark Gasquoine is Waikato Regional Council’s land management advisory services team lead.

Future proof by taking an all-encompassing view

s the business of nutrient management becomes more complex, a practical system which keeps it simple for the people on the ground is paramount. Archway Group specialises in nutrient containment, feed and effluent storage and feed barns, throughout the North Island and manufacture their own concrete panels during winter in Te Puke. Archway Group owner Matt Hodgson says the biggest hole farmers can fall down when building new infrastructure, whether it’s effluent storage or a feed pad, is trying to cut costs and not building a system with enough storage or space. “If you’re only investing to meet minimal compliance your risk to changes in the future is a lot higher.”

Building an inadequate system also puts pressure on staff, so farm owners need to think about how they can have a sustainable operation and that includes staff retention, Matt says. The wellbeing of people needs to be part of the calculations, along with future proofing a system. There are a lot of companies selling products to farmers, but the whole system needs to be thought of holistically – an all-encompassing view. This is what Matt does as he sits down with a farmer to work through a new system or how to make an existing system more functional.

“Effluent is the worst job on farm, so it’s about how you can make the worst job easy, with low management - so you don’t have to be cleaning out the stone trap or shifting the irrigator every day.”

Simplicity from Clean Green Effluent

T

he Clean Green Effluent System’s simple design allows total automated effluent management at a fraction of the cost of constructing a mega pond. The patented weeping wall’s unique design allows the solids to dry quickly without causing any blockages in the walls. The concrete lined structure allows for easy removal of the dry solids once a year with a standard digger. Due to the exceptional retention of the solids (35% more than any other tested), the green liquid separated through the wall is suitable for external yard wash, thus reducing fresh water consumption to about 20 litres/cow/day. This reduction in fresh water usage decreases the amount of effluent generated for

distribution to pasture to about 22 litres/cow/day. The Clean Green Effluent patented distribution system allows for liquid effluent to be dispersed safely every day at 0.25mm application depth. This super low application depth allows total nutrient uptake by the plant which in turn reduces the nitrate leaching to zero. Next to no storage is required

Flexible tanks offer great option for storage

B

ased in the heart of the Waikato, Flexi Tanks NZ is the original NZ distributor of the flexible tank – a great solution for your dairy effluent, water or fuel storage needs especially suited to high risk soil areas throughout the country. What is a flexible liquid tank? Constructed from the heaviest fabric, it’s best described as a bladder think 1980’s waterbed bladders on steroids! The Flexi Tanks liquid storage system was introduced to New Zealand in 2013. Although it was very common in Europe with storing effluent, this new innovative system was slow to catch on in NZ. Nowadays, due to its proven, simple, effective and economical

installation, the flexible tank option is a very popular liquid storage option with NZ dairy farmers. Flexi Tanks are constructed from 1400 g/m² fabric, are specifically designed for effluents and made to handle high and low pH levels. This system is fully enclosed, so it’s safe and also encourages anaerobic activity to break down the contents, making it an easy system to manage. All our effluent tanks include quick connect, no mess stirring valves that allow stirring in all directions. Our flexible bladder tanks sit alongside any existing separation infrastructure and many farmers have found them an economical, easy and fast solution to becoming farm compliant.

The immediate cause of your pond crust is pathogenic bacteria in the effluent. These bacteria separate the effluent fibres and then send them to the surface to form the crust. How do you counter these bad bugs? With good bugs. That’s what Slurry Bugs are – helpful bacteria that eat the pond crust. Literally. Not only do Slurry Bugs remove the crust, they transform the effluent nutrients into organic forms that are easily used by plants. In other words, they liquefy your pond and turn it into an effective, spreadable fertiliser.

WHEN EFFLUENT HITS THE FAN

liptank started building effluent tanks in 2009. In those days, dairy effluent systems were antiquated and had not been keeping pace with development in the rest of the dairy technology sector. Ten years later and Kliptank has revolutionised the effluent industry, using modern wastewater treatment processes to help farmers get the most value out of their effluent: increasing milk production, lowering farm costs and ultimately improving farm profitability. The main innovation that propelled Kliptank to be the industry leader is the Klipjet Aeration and Stirring system which uses effluent pumps to mix the tank hydraulically Not only do Klipjets minimise sludge build-up and prevent crusting, but studies on the soil and grass

irrigated by the treated effluent have been proven to: • Increase drymatter • Improve herbage quality • Improve soil condition and health • Increase worm count • Correct soil pH • Fixate volatile nutrients in the soil • Reduce pathogens • Reduce odour

• And most importantly of all – cows prefer eating the grass. Come and talk to us at the Effluent Expo about an effluent solution that is right for you.

small Matamata company has been at the forefront of ground-breaking water filtration technology for more than 15 years. Forsi Innovations launched its Effluent Filtration system at the 2015 Fieldays and captured huge success nationwide. The biggest system to date is situated at Massey University’s No1 Dairy at its Palmerston North Campus. The effluent filter system takes the effluent, separates the solids and filters the water to drinking water standards so that the water is completely clean with no pathogens, virus or smell. This means the water can be used

for any need without limitations. The solids that have been separated out are high in fertilizer value and can be composted down in the solids bunker to be used later on the pasture or cropping paddocks. The big advantage to the Forsi Effluent Filter System is that it eliminates the need for large storage ponds that can waste valuable land area. Now the system has further refined to be chemical free. This is a huge advantage to farmers, because the only inputs to run the system are power and effluent. The new technology has been on trial for the past eight months with huge success. They have been using

the technology on a car wash plant that recycles 100% of the water and saves the owner of this business $1000’s every year in chemical costs. This new technology has revolutionized the efficiency of all Forsi’s filtration systems and the way they work on all types of water, not just bore water and effluent, but trade waste as well. F

arm dairy effluent is now recognised as a useful nutrient resource, capable of being recycled for land application to pasture or crops. Dairy effluent is made up of cow manure, urine and wash-down water in varying quantities depending on feed system and seasonal changes, meaning the composition of effluent is highly variable. Analysis of farm dairy effluent makes sense for multiple reasons: from a nutrient resource point of view and as a means of keeping nutrient-loading rates within regional regulatory frameworks. Test results can also support decisions regarding set-up and ongoing management of a reliable effluent system. Dairy effluents are generally grouped into three types according to drymatter content: liquids, slurries

ClearTech system based on science

M

anagement of farm dairy effluent is difficult, especially when soils are wet and storage ponds are filling fast. ClearTech is a new technology designed to help farmers meet their effluent consent conditions by increasing the number days of storage available in effluent ponds, reducing water use at the dairy shed, and reducing the environmental impact of agriculture. The ClearTech effluent treatment system is based on science and engineering processes used in treating drinking water and municipal waste water. Farm dairy effluent generally contains about 99% fresh water and about 1% solid material (dung, soil, plant material etc.). These fine particles (called colloids) are too light to settle out of the effluent water under gravity.

ClearTech uses a coagulant to bring these small colloidal particles together to form larger heavier particles (called ‘floc’) that have sufficient mass to settle out under gravity. This produces clear water that can be recycled to wash the yard and, importantly, results in less effluent going into the effluent storage pond each day. The heart of the ClearTech system is the intelligent technology that automatically calculates and mixes the right amount of coagulant to clarify the effluent. ClearTech is a fully integrated effluent treatment system that can be retrofitted between a dairy shed and the effluent pond. The key benefits are: • Better management of effluent storage. Recycling water to wash the yard reduces the volume of effluent going into a farm’s

• • •

effluent storage pond by up to 200%. Reduced risk of environmental breaches from effluent ponds overflowing or effluent needing to be applied to land in su b-optimal soil conditions. Less freshwater use by recycling wash water for cleaning the yard (over 50% saving is possible) Reduced risk from microorganisms (e.g. E. coli) in the clear water and treated effluent (because these are substantially reduced during the treatment process). Less risk of leaching from effluent area into water. Reduced risk of phosphate leaching from effluent area into water Less staff time shifting effluent irrigator

Get the facts on flooring for your yards

D

o you have an unsurfaced concrete yard? Then here’s the full uncensored story of how you can avoid spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on off-pasture stand-off solutions… and still provide a comfortable, easy to maintain stand-off pad for your cows. How many times in recent years have you had to make the choice between ruined pasture or lame cows? And how many times have you weighed the cost of building a standoff pad or feed-pad, but found it to be too high? Do you know that the exact type of concrete dairy yard you have on your farm has been doing double

28

duty as a long-term stand-off pad for hundreds of farms who have already installed rubber matting. As many dairy farmers have now discovered, if you install purposemade rubber matting on your yard, you get a fully compliant stand-off pad for a fraction of the cost of building a new stand-off pad. In most cases, the effluent management system is already built into the yard – so the expense of a new effluent system is avoided. Installing rubber matting on your yard provides you with a long-term stand-off pad - but it does much more than that. Consider the improved comfort for your cows at milking time – leading

to faster flow and shorter milking times. Then there is the ease of cleaning that rubber has over concrete – reducing the time and water it takes for clean-up. And, by adding rubber matting to your yard, you extend the life of the concrete by up to 50 years. As ex-dairy farmers and stock agents, we know dairy farming. With more than 20 years experience in rubber surfacing, we have the knowledge to recommend the right rubber mat for your yard.

ortex Bladders not only offer the many advantages of a standard storage bladder or flexible tank, but also offer an effective and hassle-free solution to removing solids from the bladder with our central drain hole. This allows the vortexing of the liquid to drive the solids to the centre of the bladder where the drain hole is. Let’s face it the removal of solids from all types of storage options is a real challenge, but the Vortex Bladder was always designed to help address this issue. When you get a Vortex Bladder

from us, you also get expert advice on sizing your storage, and how to get your Vortex Bladder to work effectively with what you have already or are going to need. We are experts in all aspects of dairy effluent and we’re also Farm Dairy Effluent System Design Accredited, so we are not just a supplier of bladders/flexible tanks. Brian Nicholson and Allan Crouch are veterans in the dairy effluent world. With over 40 years of experience in the industry between them, and the designing of hundreds of effluent systems in New Zealand

– and further abroad – under their belts, the success of their business (which they both own and operate) is not surprising. At Precise DE, Nicholson and Crouch supply advice; design effluent systems suited to each specific farm they work on; supply products - from storage solutions to irrigation equipment - and install the equipment regardless of where in the country their customers are.

n increasing number of farmers are putting their confidence in Sabre’s range of effluent pumps, as they pass a decade in the New Zealand effluent market. Sabre pumps have been marketed to NZ’s industrial sector under their parent brand Roto for over 30 years, and have enjoyed considerable success pumping resins, chemical slurries, heavy sludges and the like. Sabre pumps are optimised for the dairy effluent market and are assembled and tested in NZ. They are marketed by Pump & Valve Specialties, the sole NZ agent. Pump & Valve sales manager, Matt Scarlett says the brand Sabre is firmly established in the NZ market with over 800 pumps sold to date; “frankly if they weren’t any good we would not have sold 10% of that”. Matt puts the brand’s reliability

SCAN ME 30

down to their simple, robust designs, the consistently high quality of components and Pump & Valves’ ethos of always selecting pumps conservatively. “At the end of the day, what counts to most people is the ‘lifetime cost’ of the pump – and with Sabre, you buy competitively.” Pump & Valve stock Sabre pumps and spares in Auckland and Christchurch and deliver nationwide. Another popular aspect of the Sabre product is the package concept. Pumps are available as a

‘bare pump unit’ i.e. Pump and drive unit mounted on a Stainless steel base, or as a ‘complete package’ which has a control box, timer, dry run sensor, pressure gauges and a lead and plug. These units are built in Pump & Valve’s Auckland facility and programmed, then tested before dispatch to give the customer a complete “plug and play” option.

Effluent storage around the world taking new turns

ffluent storage is taking a new turn in many places around the globe. With environmental considerations driving better use of nutrients and resources as well as greater scrutiny on waste management, the days of dumping the stuff in an open hole are long gone. In Japan a recent installation of a 10,000 cube storage facility is the first step in a program which will connect several of these systems to create biogas for the local municipality. A similar program in the United Kingdom covers nearly 2ha of a fully covered biogas plant with storage, digesters and gas storage for power turbines. What is a common factor in all

Left: A site in the United Kingdom where an almost 2ha storage site is fully covered to collect biogas which fuels power turbines.

modern storage is full cover, open pond storage in many parts of the world is no longer an option. Greenhouse gasses and loss of nutrients along with the rain or weather impacts are key factors in a rethink on how we deal with waste. In New Zealand we have a long way to go in this space, most of our storage is open pond and much of the nitrogen stored is evaporated.

In a country with lots of rain, ponds often store more water than effluent. Some farmers have made a break from this and are taking the longer term considerations and benefits of enclosed storage to hand. The latest issue of NZ Dairy Exporter features this option on a property in Wairarapa. For more information, connect with TechniPharm via www.technipharm. co.nz or phone 0800 80 90 98.

Low Cost Monitoring Solutions

Watermetrics offering new low cost IoT (Internet of Things) devices to help farmers monitor water and effluent sensors IoT technologies give greater flexibility to monitor additional sensors such as stock water and dairy wash down at a lower cost than 'traditional' loggers.' Farmers are now very aware of natural resource usage as part of their farming operations – water and effluent being key factors for many. By reducing the cost to monitor ‘things’ on farm, farmers can now gather input information, and create rules and alerts for their business. By deploying IoT technologies, farmers will be able to meet future compliance and social licence requirements at minimal cost. Some of the benefits of using IoT are:  15 min data displayed every 15 min on the Watermetrics web portal  2-year warranty (RTB) on the new equipment  Ability to add inexpensive sensors without large capital outlay.  Meet future compliance monitoring by establishing baseline data now

Come and meet us on our stand and have a chat around some simple, yet cost effective effluent monitoring solutions. Alternatively, txt us on 021 362-900 to book a call.

I do enjoy reading about other farming systems and other farms doing a similar system and comparing our performance against theirs. The Dairy Exporter provides a range of different types of farming systems, which I can benchmark against.” “The information is key – there is enough detail in the articles to provide some sort of lesson. There is a lot more focus on financials, especially over the last couple of years and there have been financial lessons to be taken out of the articles.

Peter and Sarah Walters, Waikato (550 cows)

I really like the fact that the Dairy Exporter interviews and profiles such a wide range of farmers and really digs into the farm systems and looks at their profitability and relates that back to why they do what they do. I also appreciate that it covers a couple of interesting features each month - covering them from every side.”

“I really look forward to the Dairy Exporter arriving each month.
