Expo offers chance to find answers on effluent management
W
elcome to your 2018 Effluent Expo Official Guide. This guide is your preview to the first national Effluent Expo ever held in the country. Over two days, the Effluent Expo will feature almost every product and service available to farmers from nearly 100 reliable and experienced companies operating in the effluent management sector. The venue is the Mystery Creek Events Pavilion just beside Hamilton airport, and the dates are Tuesday, November 27, and Wednesday, November 28. It is free to attend the Expo and every farmer will receive a goodie bag of items from exhibitors and sponsors to take home. This Expo highlights the more collaborative effort showing up between companies involved in helping farmers manage effluent and meet the strengthening compliance rules that apply in each region of the country. Expo organizer Amanda Hodgson says it is a onestop event that showcases New Zealand’s effluent industry experts under one roof for two days. It has been timed to take place after the busy mating period on many of the country’s dairy farms. Apart from the opportunity for farmers to choose their own range of exhibitors to visit at their own pace during either or both days, organisers have also scheduled topical seminars on both days which are aimed at farmers with any level of knowledge on effluent management who are seeking more knowledge. These seminars are being delivered by experienced staff from DairyNZ and Fonterra. Topics for the seminars range from best management practice right through the effluent storage and system design, to calculating storage size with examples for small herds or larger options. There are also sponsored sessions from several of the exhibitors at the Expo, on more specific options or solutions for effluent management. The full schedule of seminars is set out on pages 6 and 7 of your Expo Guide. Primary Industries Minister Damien O’Connor is also attending the Expo later in the afternoon

of Tuesday, November 27, and will participate in a 30 minute Q & A session from 3.50pm through to about 4.20pm. This is your opportunity to put your questions to the Minister on any topics relating to compliance and effluent management, so come prepared for that. The Expo’s Master of Ceremonies, Marc Gascoigne, will keep everyone informed through both days of the Expo on seminar start times. There are food and coffee stalls operating on both days and doors open from 8.30am to 4pm for visiting the exhibitor sites inside and outside the Mystery Creek Pavilion. Don’t forget to bring your Expo Guide with you to the event so you can find your way around the exhibitor areas. An industry function has also been organised from 4.30pm through to 7.30pm on Tuesday for farmers and exhibitors to network, enjoy a yarn over a meal and drink, and also some great entertainment from the hilarious duo known as The Bitches’ Box. Tickets for this evening event are $45 each and must be pre-ordered via the Effluent Expo website www.effluentexpo.co.nz. Ticket holders receive a spit roast dinner, two drinks and the live entertainment show later in the evening. Full listings for every exhibitor start on pages 8 and 9 of your Guide. Seminars target key issues Water use Dr Caleb Higham is DairyNZ’s catchment engagement leader for the Waikato and Bay of Plenty regions. The aim of his role is “collaboration, to achieve environmental outcomes”. Caleb has a strong science background with a PhD in environmental science, researching water use on dairy farms. He holds a Master of Science with first class honours (materials and process engineering) and a Bachelor of Science (chemistry and biology) from the University of Waikato. Caleb grew up on dairy farms in the Waikato region, south of Te Awamutu. This expertise, along with his knowledge of farmers, farming and issues and opportunities around environmental sustainability will be well utilised in his latest career move.
Effluent experience Logan Bowler has been working in the dairy effluent space for the past 13 years. His experience working for a regional council and then DairyNZ has given him a great grasp of the where the industry has come from, expectations from regulatory authorities, and regular exposure to the science sitting behind many of our effluent management principles. Logan has had extensive involvement with the Dairy Effluent Storage Calculator since its inception. He couples his industry experience with designing, building and managing the effluent system on his own dairy farm. Logan has a keen interest in low-cost effluent systems for smaller farms and is passionate about using recycled effluent for yard washing.
Focus on sustainability Charlotte Rutherford has spent 20 years working at the forefront of sustainability issues in New Zealand, including 16 years at Fonterra. During this time, she developed and led the implementation of many Fonterra programmes, including the Sustainable Dairying Water Accord and Tiaki Sustainable Dairying.Charlotte has also represented Fonterra on numerous national bodies guiding the development of environmental policy in New Zealand including The Land and Water Forum.Leading change, influencing and effective communication are Charlotte’s strengths and she uses these to shape and drive the sustainability programme of work within Fonterra.
Dairy developments Emma Higgins is the dairy analyst at Rabobank’s RaboResearch Food & Agribusiness division based in New Zealand. Rabobank’s local research division is comprised of 12 analysts, who are charged with analysing developments in food and agricultural markets and industries, and advising the bank and its clients on strategic implications for their businesses. RaboResearch Food & Agribusiness is part of a broader global team of 80 analysts, located in major food production regions of the world. Before joining Rabobank, Emma worked as a tax consultant with KPMG for two and a half years and is very keen to focus her career on agribusiness. She holds a Bachelor of Laws and is an enrolled barrister and solicitor with the High Court of New Zealand.

Minister joins Q&A Primary Industries Minister, Damien O’Connor’s background in farming and adventure tourism drives his view that we need well-paid, sustainable jobs, and industry growth to improve our future. He is a passionate advocate for rural communities and for a thriving agricultural sector. Damien was first elected to Parliament in 1993 and has served as a minister in both the fifth and sixth Labour Governments. Damien is also Minister for Biosecurity, Rural Communities and Food Safety. He will attend the Effluent Expo on the afternoon of the first day (Tuesday, November 27) and join the question and answer panel discussion from 3.50pm in the foyer area.

Effluent management made easy
T
he Clean Green Effluent System’s simple design allows total automated effluent management at a fraction of the cost of constructing a mega pond. The patented Weeping Wall’s unique design means the solids can dry quickly without causing any blockages in the walls. The concretelined structure allows for easy removal of the dry solids once a year with a standard digger. Due to the exceptional retention of the solids (35% more than any other tested product), the green liquid separated through the wall is suitable for external yard wash. This process lowers fresh water consumption to about 20 litres/cow/ day. This reduction in fresh water usage decreases the amount of effluent

Chemical-free solution saves dairy farmer thousands on effluent compliance
A
small Matamata company has been at the forefront of ground-breaking water filtration technology for more than 15 years and has made impressive moves to help farmers and industrial companies deal with water-related issues. In 2015, Forsi Innovations launched their effluent filtration system at Fieldays with huge success nationwide. The biggest system to date is situated at Dairy 1 farm on the Massey University Palmerston North Campus. The effluent filter system takes the effluent, separates the solids and filters the water to drinking water standards so that it is completely clean of pathogens, viruses and odours. As a result, the water can be utilised on the farm for
any purpose without limitations as to its safety. The solids that are separated are high in fertiliser value and can be composted down in the solids bunker to be used later, on the pasture or cropping paddocks. The biggest advantage of the Forsi Effluent filter system is that it eliminates the wasted space large storage ponds create. Since its release, the company has continued to refine the effluent filtration system so it is now completely chemical-free. This is a huge advantage to farmers as the only input needed to run the system is electricity and effluent. The drive behind this streamlining in design is to make the effluent filtration system as environmentally
sustainable as possible (no chemicals added to produce clean water). The new technology has been on trial for the past eight months with huge success. Clear pond. No machines? When the Browns built a new pond, their goal was simply to keep costs down. Here is their story... One crucial question Shirley and Tony Brown run a 550 cow farm out in Pirongia, Waikato. When it came time to build a new pond, the question they asked was this: how do we keep the costs down?
Machines are expensive The conventional way of managing effluent solids is to use machines: machines that separate the solids; machines that break up the solids; machines that stir the solids. As every farmer knows, such equipment very expensive. First there’s the initial cost of buying the gear. Then there’s the ongoing cost of running it. And, of course, there are the costs of maintaining the machinery.
Hill-top complications... To make use of gravity and to avoid water table pressure on the pond liner, Tony and Shirley wanted to construct their holding pond on a hill. But in planning everything out, the Brown’s foresaw several challenges: 1. Because the proposed hill site was 100M from the shed, the cost of getting electricity up to the pond to run a stirring machine would be significant. 2. The Browns were also concerned with potential repair costs in the event that a Stirring machine ripped the liner. These complications led the Browns to look for alternatives. Could crusting and effluent odour be managed without machines?
A chance meeting At the 2012 Agricultural Bio Technology conference in Rotorua, Sheryl Brown (Tony and Shirley’s daughter) met Liz Russell, the founder of EnviroSystems in the UK.
and sludge were merely the symptoms of the real problem and that the cause of pond solids were microscopic creatures living below the surface – anaerobic bacteria. These anaerobic bacteria would separate the effluent fibres and send them to the surface. Once reaching the surface, these fibres would combine to form the crust. Scientists realised that the way to beat crust bacteria was relatively simple: put counteractive bugs into the effluent pond. These corrective micro-organisms are called Aerobic Bacteria – SLURRY BUGS.
Can crust be prevented?
The Browns learned that Slurry Bugs digest effluent fibre. It’s their food. And if sufficient numbers of Slurry Bugs are in a pond eating the effluent fibre, the raw materials needed to make the crust are removed. That means no crust can develop.
Researching Slurry Bugs Because Shirley and Tony were open to biological solutions, they decided to investigate Slurry Bugs further. Over the next two years they had further talks with Liz Russell, viewed video footage of Slurry Bugs in action in UK ponds, and read independent research that drilled deeper into the biology behind it all.
pond and to dominate it with Slurry Bugs from the beginning. Their rationale: if Slurry Bugs prevent crusting, we save a lot of money and get better fertliser in the process. If Slurry Bugs fail, we’ve spent very little to discover that fact and can then proceed with a machine-based approach.
THE RESULTS After 5 months, the Brown’s effluent pond looked like this: As impressive as that was, one further question remained: had Slurry Bugs dealt with the problem of sludging on the bottom of the pond? In December 2014 that question was answered when the Browns siphoned out the effluent. The bottom was clear.
Where to from here? For Shirley and Tony, the onging task is simply to keep the Slurry Bugs dominant in their pond. They do that by adding a small amount of Slurry Bug powder into the pond every week. Easy.

Rapt with the Hi-Tech system
I
n 2016 the Shaw family bought a fully irrigated 120-hectare dairy farm within walking distance of their home farm and bounding their 80ha run-off. The combined properties enabled the equity partnership to milk 900 cows which are moved from one property to the other in response to the weather/grass growth. Jim Shaw recalls the new farm having “everything except an effluent system. All it had was a hole in the ground requiring a contractor to come in every few weeks to empty it and irrigate on to the paddocks around the cowshed. “We needed a system which would take in a much bigger area of the farm and give us 100 days of storage. We were also mindful that – at some point in the future – we could bring our 80ha runoff into the milking platform so we needed a system

which would future-proof the farm.” The new Hi-Tech system, installed by Camco Dairy Services Ltd, comprises a 7.5Kw shore-based stirrer, multi controller, 25HP closecouple double impeller pump and King Cobra. “We used the new system for a month before the cows dried off, but were rapt with the way it was working,” Jim Shaw says. Farm manager, Oscar Smit, says
30ha of the farm are irrigated by the King Cobra. “I’d never used a Cobra until I came here, but now I wouldn’t use anything else. Set-up and maintenance are easy and the coverage is better than anything I’ve ever used.”

New simple, low-cost effluent spreader booms by Joskin
J
oskin, the world’s largest slurry tanker manufacturer has extended its range of effluent spreader booms with the introduction of two new models, the Pendislide Basic and Penditwist Basic. Both models are designed for the smaller slurry tankers, to help farmers and contractors meet the high demands on effluent management. The Pendislide places the effluent in lines via a spring-loaded shoe which slides along the ground amongst the grass, while the Penditwist places the effluent in lines on top of the grass. Spreader booms have an advantage over splash plate spreading as they release lower quantities of ammonia from
the effluent. Ammonia gas can cause significant damage to the environment and emits an unpleasant odour. The financial consequences of using mineral nitrogen fertilisers - intended to neutralise the impact of ammonia - are an added cost, one that is eliminated with the use of a spreader boom. Joskin’s spreading booms limit
the contact between slurry and the air by laying the slurry as close to the ground as possible, hence reducing the ammonia losses from volatilisation. The efficiency of the nitrogen is thereby significantly increased. The use of the word ‘basic’ is related to the simplicity of these booms. Both models contain high-tech features and are fully galvanised for optimal durability. The booms are designed to fit directly onto both existing Joskin tankers or adapted to fit most other makes. Joskin is imported and distributed by Origin Agroup and is available via its sales and service dealers nationwide.

Efficient effluent spreading
aramount Effluent was founded this year by Nick Wright and is the newest effluent contractor in the Waikato. But by no means is Nick inexperienced in the field. With a Bachelor of Commerce behind him, experience working in the logistics team for The Australian Wheat Board, operating various harvesting machinery in Europe and Australia; and back in Aotearoa, working as a customer manager for John Austin (agricultural contractors) and then on the dispatch team at J Swap Contractors, Nick has no shortage of skills. Paramount Effluent specialises in the use of state-of-the-art umbilical slurry systems for spreading effluent efficiently and practically. This system improves pasture and soil
quality over the long term, causes little damage to the terrain (slurry systems are operated by tractors, unlike other effluent spreaders which employ heavy tanker units that create soil compaction in paddocks) and acts as a natural fertiliser, which reduces fertiliser costs, as a result. The process is also fast, with 1.6 kilometres of hose and the capability to shift 200-300 cubic metres of effluent per hour, comfortably. The New Zealand outlook puts increased pressure on environmental sustainability while the economy calls for farmers to have increased output and higher intensification, two opposing goals Nick believes he is well-suited to approaching. Paramount Effluent is focussed on compliance with environmental regulations and utilising the nitrogen
in the effluent (or “harnessing”, as Nick puts it). Laying rather than spraying the effluent is a critical part of this process. In keeping with the low-impact approach, the umbilical slurry system causes no interruptions to animal routines on laneways. At the crux of it though, Nick wants to help his clients to grow their bottom line. He assures his clients that the umbilical slurry system is the most cost-effective option for moving effluent and always strives to provide a service that is “second to none.”

Pond liners offer cost- effective option
P
ondco specialises in delivering award-winning solutions for effluent pond construction. Pondco director Hamish Forbes says the company has developed its own technology called Centroid which halves the distance for water or gases to escape from the pond. The design also incorporates a pressure relief valve and, in the event of an earthquake, the liner is capable of stretching without tearing. Hamish says the liner system also offers farmers long life due to the centralized weight and settlement design, and efficiency because effluent flows in and escapes from one pipe. Pondco liners are installed in large panels, reducing the number of seams required. This also helps at installation time because it means that most of the pond wall can be

built from base excavation material. All the liner seams have secondary seams to provide extra protection. A recent project was to design and install a 16,000 cubic metre effluent containment pond on a property near Putaruru. rian Nicholson and Allan Crouch are veterans in the dairy effluent world. With over 40 years of experience in the industry between them, and the designing of hundreds of effluent systems in New Zealand – and further abroad – under their belts, the success of their joint business (which they both own and operate by themselves) Precise DE is unsurprising. Prosumps can be installed above ground, in-ground or anywhere in between. They require zero maintenance and come with a 50-year minimum build-life guarantee. Cost for a Prosump system is

ost farmers prefer not to spend more than they have to on effluent storage, yet many spend 30-40% more than they need to by choosing open pond storage which simply stores a lot of rain water. Open pond storage is also one main contributor to greenhouse gasses. Closed pond storage does not contribute to the production of greenhouse gas, instead all the nitrogen stays in the system. Progressive farming enterprise seeks the best
s part of Hopkins Farming Group’s drive to keep improving the way they manage their resources on farms, upgrading the effluent storage ponds was a critical step. The need to futureproof the ponds came from consideration of factors such as: increase in cow numbers and changes in how and when effluent is applied. Using the tools provided for specifying the minimum storage volumes and then adding a buffer to the volume calculations, an engineer was engaged to ensure that the ponds are designed to the latest specifications. Resulting from a less-than-ideal experience with the first two liner installations, Viking Containment

ollowing a detailed discussion with you about the pond and system the non-invasive pond drop mechanism is installed, calibrated and left on site for 48 hours. At the conclusion of measurement, data is downloaded and sent to a centralised analysis team. Following this, a comprehensive, straightforward report identifying the test results is presented to you.
