Tips & Hints - How to find a job Know Your Rights With the help of Careers NZ we have collated some handy tips on how to find a job and what the best ways to search for roles are. Read on to get the full details
Make a plan and set goals It's a good idea to take a methodical approach to job hunting It's a good idea to approach job hunting as though it is a job itself. You know your ultimate goal, now plan out the steps you are going to take to get there. Write a to-do list for the week ahead and have a defined goal for each day. For instance, Monday morning's goal could be to go through the weekend's newspapers and apply for three advertised positions. Tuesday's goal could be to register with four labour-hire companies. Be realistic, but challenge yourself. When you set a schedule, make sure it is one that can be achieved. This will help you feel a sense of control and accomplishment. How to find job vacancies Job vacancies are advertised in many ways. Make sure you check for vacancies in several places, as some may be advertised in only one spot. Use the internet Most job vacancies are listed online. There are many different job vacancy websites. Some list vacancies for a variety of jobs, while others have job in specific industries, such as IT. Many recruitment agencies use job vacancy websites, but also have job listings on their own websites. Many industry organisations, such as professional bodies or industry training organisations, will have job listings. If you are interested in working at a certain business or a particular employer, keep an eye on their website. Most organisations will list vacancies on their own website. Job vacancy and recruitment agency website links - list of websites that feature job vacancies
Tips & Hints - How to find a job Know Your Rights Check daily and local newspapers Major daily newspapers usually have one issue a week that features most of the job adverts. Papers with a weekend edition will generally have a large employment section too. Recruitment agencies Recruitment agencies often advertise vacancies in newspapers or on their own websites on behalf of employers. You will normally need to register with an agency before you can apply for the vacancy, but registration should be free, as recruitment companies get paid by employers. Recruitment agencies will often contact you about other jobs they think will suit you, which can be an effective way to access jobs that are not publicly advertised. Other places where jobs are advertised Professional and industry journals – you can buy these journals, or see if they are available in your library or on the internet. Career expos – recruitment agencies, universities and industries hold job – such as expos, where employers provide information about job opportunities at their companies, and list vacancies. You can often apply for the positions at the expo, so take a few copies of your CV and be prepared for impromptu interviews.
Contact employers directly Contacting employers directly (sometimes called "cold-calling") allows you to tap into the large number of jobs that are not advertised. Approaching an employer directly can not only help you find out more about a job or industry that interests you, but may lead to a job opportunity. Preparing to contact employers Before contacting an employer, you want to know a little about the organisation. For larger organisations, the best place to start is usually their website. You might also want to check advertising brochures, industry publications or, depending on the organisation, visit the business to get an idea of the type of employee they are looking for. Student Success Story Know Your Rights NZMA Auckland South student John Edmonds certainly made the most of what was on offer at the Careers Fair and landed his dream job!....
Wow John, so what’s your great news? I’ve been offered a job at The Hilton Hotel!
That’s fantastic!!! How did attending the Careers Fair help you to get this job? It really got me out of my shell and I got to meet the Hilton recruitment staff. If I didn’t attend the Fair I would never have met them
What does getting this opportunity mean to you? It means so much to me as it will help my family.
How has your life changed since being at NZMA? I have more confidence in myself; I’m more open and can speak confidently as well as I have learned so much about Hospitality & Customer Service.
Student Success Story Know Your Rights Students volunteer for Hospice West Auckland
How was your trial at The Hilton? I was blown away by having a chance there. I was asked to serve beverages to guests and take them to their tables as well as introduce them to their waiter. I loved it, it was a dream come true!
What advice do you give to others after what you have learned?
Don’t quit! No matter how hard it gets and don’t be afraid to ask for help because it’s worth it all at the end.
GOOD LUCK JOHN!!!
With thanks to John Edmonds & Leilani Hoyt from Auckland South Campus.
One of the most recognisable brands across the globe also joined the NZMA Careers Fair and proved to be a real hit with students, staff and other employers on the day. Coca-Cola Amatil is the New Zealand based division of the global Coca-Cola brand. The Kiwi based business and beverage bottler that employs 1000+ people from Whangarei to Invercargill. Part of the ASX-listed Coca-Cola Amatil Group, we are one of the largest bottlers of non-alcoholic ready-to-drink beverages in the Asia-Pacific region and one of the world's top five Coca-Cola bottlers. The Careers Fair saw Coca-Cola holding quick fire interviews with students, discussing their products and the types of roles which they recruit for and are regularly available in New Zealand. Overall the feedback was hugely positive and Coca-Cola was able to see the full potential of our NZMA students.
One of the premier companies who joined us at the Careers Fair was Fisher & Paykel. As one of New Zealand’s most recognised brands they brought their products, advice and industry experience to the day. Fisher & Paykel has been designing products since 1934 and has grown into a global company operating in 50 countries and manufacturing in the USA, Mexico, Italy, Thailand and New Zealand. Our design heritage is founded on a pioneering spirit and a culture of curiosity that has challenged conventional appliance design to consistently deliver products tailored to human needs.
In line with the values of NZMA Fisher & Paykel are keen to work with the local communities and make a difference where they can. Across the globe, Fisher & Paykel's people share a drive to help the communities in which we are located. To do this we forge relationships with key community organisations who, at a local level help us identify the people most at need, and the things they need most to assist them.

For the first time in NZMA history, the NZMA Inter-Campus Knockout Competitions were held with great turn out and participation! Nervous as they were, all the students who participated performed with gusto and enthusiasm, and served both themselves and their academies with great pride. Congratulations to all participants! For Auckland South Campus (ASC), two students who competed in their categories gained 1st place! They were Lance Broad and Jess Wanihi, who competed in Cocktails and Barista, respectively. The following is a brief interview of what they were feeling on the day:
How did you feel about entering the NZMA Inter-Campus Competitions? Jess Excited and nervous! But I was keen to see what the other campus competitors were going to be like and make on the day. Lance At first I was bit apprehensive, but once I knew it was to be held at the Careers Fare and employers would be present, I soon became excited! What was one thing you remember most when you were competing? Jess Not to stuff up! LOL Lance The amount of different ways a Mojito can be made ‌ all the competitors had their style, technique and flair of making this one drink – it was mean!
How did you feel about being the overall winner of this completion? Jess After I had finished I felt relieved! Then when the judges were deliberating I was ‘impatient’ (LOL) … and when they announced me as winner, all I could think of was “YAAAAAAAYE”. I was extremely happy! Lance I was ecstatic and the pressure I was feeling (mostly from my ASC support group hahaha) to do well was alleviated by my win! The whole experience was BUZZZING! What was one thing other than winning, you took away from the NZMA Careers Fare? Jess Due to the competition, I didn’t make to all the floors BUT I did target the Hospitality stands and was able to I was able to submit applications for a few positions of potential employment. So far, I have been contacted by Bravo and have an interview … so that’s cool! Lance Although there as a student of NZMA, I felt honoured to be asked by Bravo to assist at their Bravo stand, as it was cool to sell the brand that I am currently employed by. Gave me a chance to promote all the good stuff that I have experienced through Bravo to my fellow NZMA students. This competition will hopefully become a tradition at all NZMA Careers Fare where students, staff and exhibitors can enjoy the festivities. Thanks to Jay from NZMA South Campus & Jess and Lance our competition winners.
Not to be forgotten here is a list of all the other winners of all of the competitions from the Careers Fair! A massive well done and thank you to everyone who took part!!

New CVZealand & INTERVIEW Culinary SKILLS Fare 2013 WORKSHOPS As NZMA students you’ve probably heard rumblings about workshops through NZMA Careers well here’s a little more information…
The CV & Cover Letter and Interview Skills workshops are for all NZMA students and take place at your campus in the first and second weeks of you course. They are COMPULSORY which means you have to attend, however they are loads of fun and will hopefully help you out!!
So what are they all about!? Well, the CV & Cover Letter
Workshops are where you will create your own CV and also a Cover Letter. These are vital tools for your career development and will help you with the Employment Skills section of your course.
The Interview Skills Workshop is a chance for you to polish your interview skills! You’ll take part in a ‘mock interview’ so will experience what it might be like to have an interview and be faced with some of the types of questions you may get asked. Again this is to help you for your future career progression.
Both the sessions are about having fun and helping you create tools which you can use in the future to help you secure work experience or take with you on to further study!
If you have any questions or if you miss the workshops contact your nearest NZMA Careers Team member today at your campus and they’ll give you all the information you need!!!
NZMA Strikes Culinary GOLD Well not just gold but silver and bronze, too!! The previous weekend saw several students from across all of our NZMA campuses competing in the Culinary Fair which took place in central Auckland and the Waikato. Under the different categories students had the chance to showcase their skills and expertise in a battle to win a medal. The categories included Cocktail Making, Barista and a challenge for the chefs.
