The music industry offers a broad array of career opportunities that include music performance, composing, sound engineering, broadcasting, production, artist and event management. Universities, polytechnics and other providers throughout the country offer valuable training courses in many of these areas.

This Directory provides information about tertiary music courses available around the country in 2019, including application closing dates. The courses are listed geographically under North and South Islands, with the following key indicating the emphasis of the course:

NORTH ISLAND AUCKLAND EXCEL SCHOOL OF PERFORMING ARTS Auckland EXCEL prides itself on the calibre of its tutors who are industry professionals. With small classes, there is attention given to each student’s learning programme to ensure success. The practical nature of the course means students have maximum opportunity to apply what they learn in the context of the contemporary music styles of today. Course: PERFORMANCE IN MUSIC (Level 4) Duration: One-year full time study. Course start date: February 2019 No. of students per intake: 80 (including Drama and Dance students.) Entry criteria: Minimum age, 16. Entry is by audition. Applicants must have NCEA Level 1 English, show evidence of previous experience and display a degree of ability in one of the Major subjects. Emphasis: The music programme is practical and performance focused. A range of both

Students will receive two one-on-one music lessons with their tutors each week, as well as combined classes with their major stream working with industry professionals. The Music Fundamentals course will equip students to be able to read and write music and they will explore many contemporary music genres and settings in the Music Studies course. Students also study Music Technology where they will develop composition and arranging skills and be able to collaborate with other music students for assessment and ensemble purposes. Learning how to operate and safely set up a PA system is covered in the Music Technology course and how to utilise and enhance musical compositions using Logic Pro and other software. Qualification gained: NZ Certificate in Music, Level 4, majoring in Bass, Drums, Guitar, Keyboards or Vocals. Career prospects: Students will leave with an excellent knowledge and practical skills in their given major, and the confidence to apply them in a wide variety of industry settings including teaching, performance, sound engineering, event management, promotion, composition and arranging. Established in 1994, EXCEL is New Zealand’s largest Christian-based school of performing arts offering a unique performance-based course in music, dance and drama. We are now offering a Level 4 NZ Certificate in Music with the opportunity for selection in our Level 5 NZ Diploma in Music (subject to approval). All courses are NZQA approved and entry into the school is by audition starting in October.
