anniversary of the Children's

Health Camps movement. To celebrate we are planning amongst other things - a pilgrimage of children and dignitaries, back to the site of

the original camp in the Turakina Valley. You have no doubt become

familiar with the movement via Health stamps which have been issued annually by New Zealand Post for the last 65 years of our 75 year history. Right up to this day, New Zealand Post has helped maintain a partnership between stamp enthusiasts like yourself, and the Children's Health Camps movement.

So on behalf of the many children who have benefited from Health Camps over the years, I would like to say 'thank you' to those who have so generously supported us.

W

ild animals have always been a source of fascination and awe amongst children, which is why this issue has been created to coincide with Stamp Month. After careful consideration, ten animals of the world were chosen, based on their appeal to children and their educational value.

T

hiS year the family, religion, sharing and communication across the generations are portrayed in what is a return to a more traditional Christmas stamp issue theme. Designer Karen Odiam has combined special Christmas moments with traditional symbols of the festive season in this extensive issue. Stained glass windows, Christmas carols, the generations brought together in celebration, nativity scenes and candles are combined in a miniature sheet and separate stamps.

One of the primary objectives of Stamp Month is to foster an interest in stamps amongst children. This issue will be one of the most visible vehicles used and will be promoted with the help of Sanitarium. This breakfast cereal company. will sponsor the issue and distribute special cards featuring stamp collecting -

COLLECTOR'S. CORNER

I

n this issue's Collector's Corner we aim to enlighten those readers who are new to stamp collecting by explaining some basic stamp terminology. If you receive the regular mail packs which background each new stamp issue, you will be familiar with the collectors notes we supply. (If you don't receive these packs and would like to. follow the instructions on the opposite page.) DATE OF ISSUE. The day the new stamp issue is first released for sale - both at

Post Shops and on mail order from the Philatelic Bureau. STAMPS DESIGNED BY.

The name and place of residence of the peron who designed the stamps. Occasionally more than one designer may have been involved. PRINTER AND PROCESS.

The name of the company which printed the stamps. their locality and the printing process used. The printing process may change if the stamp is issued more than once (like the Blue Round Kiwi which was released in intaglio and reproduced on the Taipei exhibition miniature sheet using lithography). NUMBER OF STAMPS. Number of different designs in the issue.

DENOMINATIONS AND DESIGNS. The postage value on the stamps and the subject depicted. STAMP SIZE. This is the dimensions of the stamp and is expressed with the horizontal measurement first, then the vertical. Collectors may.find this interesting because occasionally a stamp may be re-released in a different size (as in 1907 when the 6!:l pictorial Kiwi, first produced in 1900 was re-released). PERFORATION GAUGE. This is used to measure the number of perforations per 2cm distance along the edge of a stamp. Again, it may differ if the stamp is re-released as in 1993 when the Christmas 45c stamps had a different perforation in booklet format. PAPER TYPE. This may differ if the same stamp is reprinted or under extreme circumstances (eg during

World War II the 1935 pictorials were re-released on a variety of different papers due to paper shortages).

I

f you are not already on our mailing list and would like to receive 'Focus' along with other information about stamp issues by mail, simply write your title (ie Mr, Mrs etc), and full name and address on a piece of paper. For example:
