In the promotion of New Zealand I have found that a good piCture can say more than a thousand words. The rrick is picking the right picrure. New Zealand POSt has done an excellent job at this. The diStinctiveness of our cities is captured brillianrly in the "Cities by Night" stamp issue and is one of the many excellent issues highlighted here. REINTRODUCTION

OF

Ross

DEPENDENCY STAMPS

D

emand, both local and international, has warranted the reintroduction of special Ross Dependency stamps. Discontinued in 1987 when the New Zealand Post Office"on the ice" was closed, these stamps were missed, particularly by philarelisrs who will certainly welcome their return. In November 1994 a definitive issue of ten stamps will replace the New Zealand stamps currently in use for mail from Scott Base at the Ross Dependency. The issue depicts ten different species of wildlife which have adapted to, live and breed successfully in this harsh environmenc. The penguins, seals, pettels and skuas featured in this delightful issue are displayed at their best. Fine detail and beautiful colour enhances what are already photogenic subjects. The stamps will be available for Ross Dependency postage only they will not be valid for postage in New Zealand. They will be on sale to those actually at SCOtt Base though letters posted there will be cancelled at Christchurch. However, collectors will be able to obtain the new stamps from the Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch Philatelic Sales Centres or by mail order from the Philarelic Bureau, Wanganui. It is important to note that ALL cancelling of Ross Dependency mail will be carried out at the New Zealand Post Ross Dependency Agency ar the Christchurch Philarelic Sales Centte. This includes all mail ftom the ice and all philatelic mail. Also available - Presentation Pack - See enclosed Cricket orderform fOr details

T

he common copper (Lycaena salustius) adorns the $4 stamp. The yellow-brown undersides of the wings are the most identifiable feature of this butterfly as the upper surfaces vary in predominant colour through a range of orange, copper and gold. Males have double black lines on the veins of the wings as the stamp shows, but females display this characteristic to a much lesser degree on their hind wings only. The common copper can be found in warm open situations throughout New Zealand. The red admiral (Bassaris gonerilla) is probably the besr known in the land. Although other re adm'irals are found in many other countties, the New Zealand speGr~ is eoae ic and quite distinct. It has bright red patches on eaÂŁh win~~d black and blue eye-spots on the hind wings. Under the wi gs there :s a pattern of orange-brown and silver-grey. This sttikingly attractivb butterfl~ can also be found in JUSt about every area of the country frobih;:;t5asrures and fields of rural New Zealand to the tiniest of ci garif~nf. ~.

New Zealand is of course a sports-minded nation and over the lasr few decades in particular, many New Zealanders have been attracred ro rhe grand old game of golf. They are well catered for wirh lirerally hundreds of very attracrive golf courses available ro them throughour the country. Many have lavished every arrention on giving golfers, both New Zealanders and visiring overseas golf enthusiasrs, world class faciliries. This has, in rum, resulred in this counrry having produced fine golfers, amareur and professional, who have represented their country with distinction on the "circuit" of rhe inrernational golfing world. Perhaps the mOSt familiar would be left-hander, Bob Charles who, now forty years or more since his Open debut in Balmacewen in 1953 still regularly and successfully competes in tournaments worldwide such as the U .5. Seniors Tour. Names in the news mOTe recently include Philip Tataurangi, who with Michael CampbeU, Grant Moorhead and Stephen Scahill won the prestigiou; Eisenhower Trophy world amateur teams championship for New Zealand. And borh Frank Nobilo and Greg Turner are also pitting their¡ talenrs againsr rhe world's best professionals. In New Zealand the game continues to give pleasure to over a hundred thousand regular golfers and untold numbets of their followers. As a preview ro the issue this page shows three of the early design concepts New Zealand Post is considering for the Golf issue.
