CENTENARY OF CINEMA IN NEW ZEALAND DATE OF ISSUE: To be confirmed
While it may be celebrating its first centenary (the first public screening of motion pictures in New Zealand took place on Tuesday 13 October 1896 at the Opera House, Auckland), cinema is not old yet. The aim of the Centenary is to celebrate moving image hetitage and culrure in New Zealand, ro ensure an awareness of the production and exhibition of film in this country and herald the second century of cinema. A major part of the celebration of the Centenary is the stamp series produced by New Zealand Post. When it premiered at Auckland's Lyric Theatre on 17 August 1914, Hinemoa became rhe first fearure film ro be made in rh is country. Produced by George Tarr on an inirial budget of only ÂŁ50, it was filmed over eight days in Rotorua by Charles Newham. The film started Hera Tawhai Rogers as Hinemoa. Between 1940 and 1970 there were only three locally produced dramatic feature films made in New Zealand and all were made by a Wellington company, Pacific Films, which almost single-handedly kepr the idea of an independent film industry alive through these lean years. The first of their features was Broken Barrier, made in 1952 by Roger Mirams and John O'Shea, a poignant story of a Maori woman falling in love with a Pakeha man and "facing the challenge of prejudice!" The film starred Kay Ngarimu and Terence Bayler. The arrival on Waitangi Day 1980 of a yellow mini on screens around rhe country announced the first great popular success of the New Zealand film industry - Geoff Murphy's wildly energetic and funny Goodbye Pork Pie. The film starred Tony Barry and Kelly Johnson as two desperates in a stolen mini heading from Kaitaia ro Invercargill.

It is very easy to be a part of Stamp Points. As the name suggests, Stamp Points is based on the accumulation of points which relate to the amount of money spent by a customer on philatelic products. Every dollar you spend on philatelic products with the Philatelic Bureau or at one of the Philatelic Sales Centres, entitles you to one Stamp Point. Points can be accumulated until the end of 1996. On your enclosed order form, you have been credited with Stamp Points based on your purchases from I January 1996 until now. Collectors who prefer to buy their philatelic products from one of the three Sales Cenrres can join the Stamp Points programme using Stamp Points Cards which are available from the Sales Centres. Unfortunately at this stage we are unable to offer the programme to customers who may purchase philatelic products from sources other than the Philatelic Bureau and the Philatelic Sales Centres. Once you reach the base enuy level of 150 Stamp Points you will be able to seleer from a range of rewards including the "Best of '96", a special set of miniature sheets featuring $1.80 stamps from nine 1996 stamp issues, as well as high quality stamp art prints and a stamp arr calendar. The "Best of '96" miniature sheets set has been produced specifically for the Srarnp Points programme. To get this set, you need to accumulate 150 points during the 1996 calendar year - about the cost of a set of New Zealand stamps and a set of first day covers.
STAMP POINTS - TERMS AND CONDITIONS
ELIGIBILITY • The Stamp Points programme is open to all customers who purchase philatelic products at full price from the Philatelic Bureau ('Bureau customers') or at one
of the three Philatelic Sales Centres located in AuckJand, Wellingcon and Chrisrchurch ('Sales Cenrre customers'). 'Philatelic product' refers {O setS of current stamp issues. first day covers, miniature sheets, presentation packs and other items intended for collection purposes. Purchases of stamps for postage use are nO{ eligible for inclusion in rhe Stamp Poinrs programme.
POINTS SYSTEM • Poinrs are earned on the basis of I poinr per complerc New Zealand dollar spem on purchases of philatelic products from [he Philarelic Bureau or dH~ rhree Philatelic Sales Cenrres located in AuckJand, Wellingron and Christchurch. • Bulk purchases of sramps for postage purposes arc excluded from this promotion and will not earn Stamp Points. • Points are earned for purchases made between 1 January 1996 and 31
December 1996. • Bureau cuswmers will be backdated with points relating ro purchases made between 1 January 1996 and the commencement of Sramp Poinrs on 1 April

• Prints: A range of six an-quality prints are being developed fot the Stamp Points programme. These prints feature a graphic or illustration taken from a specific past stamp issue. The relevant stamp issue will be mounted on the print and date stamped with the first day of issue. The print is unframed.
• Stamp Art Calendar: A calendar fearuring artwork from New Zealand Post stamp issues has been developed and is available for distribution to customers attaining the appropriate level of points.

The Philatelic Bureau has again been recognised as a market leader! During February 1996, the Bureau was advised by the New Zealand Trade Development Board of our achievement of a Tradenz Export Commendation. The Export Commendations are awarded to acknowledge the contributions to New Zealand's foteign exchange earnings through initiative, effort and enterprise. The New Zealand Trade Development Board highlighted New Zealand Post's innovative approach to stamp design. and targeting of the South East Asian market. particularly through stamp exhibitions, as facrors which have resulted in a dramaric increase in sales since 1992. Naturally New Zealand Post is very proud of this achievement and appreciates the ongoing contribution made by the team in Wanganui to help earn such an honour.

HEALTH DATE OF ISSUE: 5 June 1996 The 1996 Health stamps promote road safety for children. The risk of accident on New Zealand's busy roads is great and every care needs to be taken to ensure young children can safely operate in this environment. The 40c stamp (+ 5c surcharge) shows a small child in a child's car restraint seat. The 80c stamp (+ 5c surcharge) shows a child on a pedestrian crossing holding an adult's hand. Both of rhe stamps, de~igned by Helen Casey of Wellington, are simple reminders of the type of actions which are necessary to prevent child accidents. For the first time, the 40c (+ 5c surcharge) Health stamp is also being produced in self-adhesive rolls of 100 stamps. New Zealand Post donated $121,000 to the Children's Health Camps from the sale of the 1995 Health Stamp issue.
On 26 October 1946, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra (then known as the National Orchestra) assembled for its first rehearsal. Since that time, after three name changes, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra has become one of New Zealand's greatest cultural assets, performing over 100 concerts throughout New Zealand annually. The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra is the largest musical contributor to the biennial New Zealand International Festival of the Arts, the provider of players for rhe New Zealand Chamber Orchesrra, a partner of the Royal New Zealand Ballet on narional tours, and rhe manager of the New Zealand Youth Orchestra. The stamps commemorating the 50th anniversary of the NZSO will depict popular musical instruments - the violin on the 40c stamp and a gleaming French horn on the 80c stamp - with a musical score appearing as the background. The musical score depicted is written by Gareth Farr, and is one of the pieces written to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the orchestra.

The concept, or rationale, of the designs was to communicate the messages of Christmas including peace, joy, love, patience, protection, and humility. c.xtinct Bi~ds Date of Issue: 2 October 1996 About 35 species of bitd have become extinct in New Zealand ovet the 1000 years since humans arrived. Many of the bitds wete the largest of their kind anywhete in the world - such as the moas, the adzebill and the eagle. Many of New Zealand's early birds lost the power of flight, an abiliry unnecessary in an environment with virtually no competitots or ptedators. The artival of mammals, however, resulted in the decline and ultimate extinction of many species through destruction of habitats and predation. Six denominations of sheet stamps are due fot telease, as well as a 40c stamp booklet.
40c - Adzebill (Aptornis otidiformis) The Adzebill was the size of a turkey and well adapted for digging, with a latge beak, and powetful feet. Being flightless, this species fell an early victim to humans, dogs and tats.
80c - Laughing Owl (Sceloglaux albifacies) The last recorded sighting of the Laughing Owl was in 1914. Unlike most other owls, this species appeats to have been more adapted to hunting on the ground, fully utilising its long, powerful legs.
$1.00 - Piopio (Turnagra capensis)
The Piopi~ is considered to be a ptimitive relative of the bowet bitds and birds-of-paradise of Austtalia and New Guinea. In the early 1800s, it was one of New Zealand's more common native bitds.
$1.20 - Huia (Heteralocha acutirostris) The Huia was the only species of bird in the world whete the male and female had differently shaped beaks. The striking plumage of the Huia was prized by the Maoti for cetemonial purposes, and early Europeans killed thousands to stock museum collections and to supply the fashion industty.
$1.50 - Giant Eagle (Harpagornis moorei) This was the largest eagle known, atmed with massive talons. The Giant Eagle was a forest dweller, flying low ovet the tops of New Zealand fotests, tathet than soaring high in the ait.
$1.80 - Giant Moa (Dinornis giganteus) The latgest of the 11 Moa species, this was one of the biggest birds in the world and was most common in the South Island. The Giant Moa stood up to two metres to the top of its back, and weighed up to 250 kilograms.
40c booklet - Stout-legged wren (Pachyplichas yaldwyni) About 10 cm in length, the stout-legged wten was unique in being amongst the smallest flightless birds in the world. The powetfullegs and feet, so prominent in this stamp, enabled this bird to move about the forest floot mote like a mouse than a bird. STAMP POLL RESULTS During February 1996, 250 individuals were selected randomly from the New Zealand POSt stamp database and were invited to give some feedback on their opinions of all the stamps issued in 1995. Many thanks to the 170 people who took the time to respond. Each stamp issue of 1995 was rated on a scale of 1 to 5, with I being "excellent" and 5 being "very poor or dismal" for topic, design and production qualiry. The ratings were averaged and then ranked, to give the following results.
