Vesting Day Issue To mark the occasion of the establishment of New Zealand Post Ltd on April 1, 1987, two 40 cent se-tenant "Vesting Day" stamps have been issued. The stamps depict various aspects of the New Zealand Post business. An unaddressed First Day Cover costing 91 cents has been produced. The origins of New Zealand's postal services stretch back to the early 1800's when whalers and trading ships acted as letter carriers. In 1831 the Postmaster General of New South Wales appointed a representative in New Zealand who collected and distributed mail from a small general store. After the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi the organisation of government included the establishment of a Post Office. The new colony needed something more than a branch of the New South Wales postal service and in 1840 New Zealand's first official Post Office was opened at Kororareka in the Bay of Islands. Most mail between different parts of New Zealand still had to travel by sea in the 1840's but the

mid-fifties saw the expansion of overland postal routes. By 1856 one such route from Wellington to Auckland through New Plymouth was used fairly regUlarly with Maori runners carrying the mail, often under very difficult conditions. New Zealand's first postage stamps were introduced in 1855 when there were just 20 Post Offices. By 1860 there were already 107 Post Offices and as the population grew so did the number of Post Offices, reaching 856 by 1880, about two-thirds of today's total. International postal links have always been important for such a geographically isolated country. New Zealand joined the Universal Postal Union as part of Australasia in 1891 and became a member in its own right in 1907. It is one of 40 member countries on the Executive Council and one of 35 member countries on the Consultive Council for Postal Studies as well as a member of the Executive Council of the Asian-Pacific Postal Union. New Zealand Post is one of three new companies that will be

established with the split of the New Zealand Post Office on April 1. The other new companies, Telecom Corporation of New Zealand Ltd, and Post Office Bank Ltd, will also come into existence on April 1. The New Zealand Post Vesting Day stamp issue was designed by Communication Arts Ltd, Wellington and printed by CPE Australia using the lithography process. Stamps measure 30mm x 41 .1 mm in horizontal format and are printed in sheets of 100 (10 rows of 10). Plate/imprint positional or value blocks may be obtained by purchasing at least six stamps. Unless stocks are exhausted earlier these stamps will remain on sale at Post Offices until June 16, 1987 and at the Philatelic Bureau and Philatelic Sales Centres until April 30, 1988.

Order Form

Preparations for New Zealand's first World Philatelic Exhibition are well under way, and the Committee of New Zealand 1990 have been visiting overseas exhibitions looking for unique and prestigious items which have never been seen before by the New Zealand public. To support the Exhibition, New Zealand 1990 are issuing various souvenirs. Now available is a second specially designed AEROGRAMME. Local artist, Phil Alien, has skilfully depicted His Holiness Pope John Paul 11 as he was seen on his recent New Zealand tour. This is the only philatelic souvenir of the visit by this highly respected world leader. The Aerogramme is pale blue, 60gsm paper, and carries a 45c Queen Elizabeth stamp imprest. Another addition to the souvenirs now available for the 1990 exhibition is a gold plated SPOON formed from a genuine New Zealand HALFPENNY, set off with the blue official logo of this, our most ambitious ever philatelic event in New Zealand. £.f>.LAN ~ 1D 'B

Stampex87 New Zealand's sixth National Youth Philatelic Exhibition is to be held in Dunedin at the end of August, 1987. The Stampex 87 logo links one of the unique attractions of Dunedin - a Royal albatross in flight over Otago Harbour - with a triangular perforation representing philately. Because of widespread interest and concern for endangered wildlife the Stampex 87 Committee has chosen this as the major theme for the exhibition but has not overlooked the architectural heritage of Victorian Dunedin. These two themes are developed in our souvenirs which range from labels and covers through postcards and first day covers to cinderella miniature sheets. The postcards depict some architectural gems while scenes on some maximum cards include notable bUildings. Several endangered species including the yellow-eyed penguin, weka, little brown spotted kiwi, Hector's dolphin, Hooker's sea lion, Hamilton's frog and the tuatara are depicted on a series of

miniature sheets. Stampex 87 will be assured of success if it receives strong support from the New Zealand philatelic community. Supporting membership can be obtained for as little as NZ$11.00 and benefits include the receiving of regular newsletters, publications and catalogues, as well as opportunity for preferential ordering of all limited edition philatelic souvenirs. Junior entrants in five age groups up to 22 years may compete in New Zealand, Overseas Countries, and Thematic categories and may include items of postal history and stationery in their entries. Adult entrants in three age and experience groupings may compete in any of the above categories together with an additional miscellaneous section which embraces postal history, stationery and literature. Stampex 87 will have a Post Office with display, and a different date stamp for each of the four days the expo is open. In addition there will be dealers' stands, restaurant facilities, and the opportunity to make use of moderately priced hostel accommodation. Entry forms, "Guide for Exhibitors", and application forms for supporting membership together with all other information are available from: The Secretary, Stampex 87, p.a. Box 6222, DUNEDIN.

New Zealand National Parks

The centennial of New Zealand's national parks is the subject of the 1987 Scenic stamp issue. Four stamps feature Urewera National Park (70c), Mount Cook National Park (80c), Fiordland National Park (85c) and Tongariro National Park ($1.30). A miniature sheet including the

Tongariro National Park stamp will cost $1.70. Designer, Tracey Purkis of Paraparaumu, has used an original lino-cut technique to present a scene from each park together with a sidebox showing a typical plant on each stamp, tussock (Tongariro), a fern leaf

(Urewera), a buttercup (Mount Cook) and a pineapple shrub (Fiordland). The centennial this year commemorates the beginnings of New Zealand's present national park system in 1887 when Te Heuheu Tukino, paramount chief of Ngati Tuwharetoa, presented

Then in 1986 an 11 th park was created, the Whanganui National Park, based on lands around the Wanganui river. Fiordland (85c) established in 1905, is New Zealand's largest national park at over one and a quarter million hectares. Located in the south western corner of the

South Island it is an area of magnificent scenery with mountains, forests, lakes, fiords and bush-clad mountains. Mount Cook National Park (80c) takes in some of the most spectacular scenery of the South Island's southern alps. The park contains 15 peaks above 3000 metres including New Zealand's highest mountain, Mount Cook. About one third of the park is covered by permanent snow and glacier ice. The largest glacier is the Tasman, some 29 kilometres long and up to three kilometres wide. It is a rugged and unforgiving region and many mountaineers have lost their lives in the park. Urewera National Park, established in 1954, is best known as New Zealand's largest remaining area of unspoiled native bush. The park comprises nearly a quarter of a million hectares surrounding Lake Waikaremoana in the eastern central North Island. Most native birds, including the kiwi and kaka, are found throughout the park. The New Zealand National Park stamp issue was printed in Australia by Leigh-Mardon Pty Lld using lithography. Each stamp is of vertical format, measuring 30mm x 34mm. Unaddressed First Day Covers, also designed by Tracey Purkis, are available at a cost of $3.82.
