rout mrive in clean, clear, cool waters. The tugged mountainous nature of the New Zealand landscape, combined wim me relatively unspoilt environment, means mat mis quality habitat is available in abundance. As a consequence, me fresh waters of New Zealand contain some of me best trout fisheries in the world. New Zealand's trout fisheries are internationally renowned and attract many overseas anglers each year. The relatively small size of me country, togemer with the proliferation of suitable waters, means mat excellent fishing is available virtually throughout ew Zealand. Brown and rainbow trout are me most sought afrer species, and btook and sea-run btown trout provide extra variety for the keen Ay fisher. Both brown and rainbow trout abound mroughout me lakes and rivers of the Norm and Soum Islands. The southern regions, Soumland and Otago, are famous for meir riverine brown trout fisheries. Rivers such as me Matauta produce wonderful dry Ay fishing for brown trout. The fishing can be challenging even to the best of Ay fishers, but men that's what makes the sport so rewarding! Lake Taupo and the Rototua lakes are a "mecca" fot fishers of rainbow trout. This relatively small area is the most intensively fished part of New Zealand, with thousands of anglers attracted by me lure of the rainbow trout. More Aashy by nature than me brown trOut, the rainbow trout is also more readily caught. This feature is obviously attractive with many new anglers enjoying the thrill of trour fishing for the first time in me lakes of this region. The colourful brook trout has a limited range in New Zealand. Lake Emily in me Soum Island and the Hinemaiaia Dam, near Taupo, contain populations of brook trout mat attract anglers searching for someming a little different. Sea-run brown trour are the same species that inhabit the rivers and streams. Some brown trout choose to enter the sea as juveniles and live in salt water before returning to me rivers to spawn. The reasons behind the seaward journey are not well understood, but me time spent in the sea brings benefits for both fish and angler. The most striking difference from river-resident specimens is their silver coloration. This Ay fishing issue strikingly illustrates me trour species available to anglers in New Zealand, and highlights some of meir more distinguishing features. Also featured are four of me more popular and successful artificial flies used to lure these fish.

FLY FISHING DATE OF IsSUE: 18 .... 1.7 Four types of trout found in New Zealand, and the flies used to fish them, are presented by artiSt Joanne Kreyl in fine derail and realistic colour in the ~"""iiiil""il~iiiiiiiiiliiiiii:l upcoming 'Fly Fishing' stamp issue. --,.,. NEW ZEALAND

Trout were introduced to New Zealand from the Northern Hemisphere in the laner half of the nineteenth century, and have thrived here since then. The clean, running fresh waters of New Zealand have proved so much to their liking that we now boast some of the fineSt trout fishing locations in the world. Trout can grow to nearly 10 kilos in weight, however any trout which exceeds four kilos is considered a real prize. Fish weighing berween one and rwo kilos are a more usual catch by fly fishers in New Zealand.

Dear Collectors, With 1997 well underway, it is appropriate that I clarifY the stamp issuing policy of New Zealand Post, as I received some comment last year that the programme as outlined in the printed calendar was not adhered to. The programme as diStributed is what we refer (Q as our core programme and is the full complement of issues as we know
