DATE OF ISSUE: 9 OCTOBER 1997
1997 is an important year in the friendly relations between the People's Republic of China and New Zealand, both nations are getting ready to celebrate the 25th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations. This year also saw the visit of our Vice Premier Zhu ~ongji, to further develop trade relations between our two countries. More to our delightfulness, an exhibition of joint-issue stamps on roses is going to be held simultaneously in New Zealand and the People's Republic of
Tianjin and Wellington this October. It is not only good news for stamp collectors, but also adds one spotlight

rose in this joint stamp issue. The Chinese first used roses in their gardens around 2700BC. One of the roses depicted on the stamps, Rosa rugosa, is among the oldest roses known to man, and could possibly have been used Huang Guifang
at that time. Nicknamed the 'Hedgehog Rose' because of its abundant prickles, it is still popular to this day for its

wonderful fragrance. In contrast, Aotearoa-New Zealand is one of the youngest roses in the world, having been bred relatively recently by Sam McGredy as his gift to New Zealand on this country's 150th anniversary in 1990. The stamps are available as se-tenant pairs of two 40 cent stamps, as well as in a miniature sheet. Both the New Zealand and Chinese stamps carry the same design, by Zhang Guizheng of China, and all four stamps appear on the first day cover.

Eric Heath shows a New Zealand yachtsman 'taking on the world: complete with red socks - an obvious reference to New Zealand's achieYements in the sport of international yachting. The strong anti-nuclear stance of New Zealand is encapsulated by Burton SiIYer on the $1.80 stamp. The weft known cartoon character Bogor is shown having just dearfelled a pine forest to show a peace symbol.
DATE OF ISSUE: 12 NOVEMBER 1997
On the 20th of November 1947, cheered by the teeming throngs lining the entire length of the processional route, supported by crowned heads and invited dignitaries at the ceremony itself, and before millions more through the medium of television throughout the United Kingdom and abroad, Her Royal Highness Princess Elizabeth and Lieutenant His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh were married at Westminster Abbey, London. Five short years later, after her father's death in 1952, the Princess became Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth 11. Her Coronation was held in Westminster Abbey in June 1953. This single stamp celebrating the 50th Wedding Anniversary of the Queen and Prince Philip is produced in sheetlets of ten stamps. The Queen is shown resplendent in the Star and Sash of the Order of the Garter and wearing the Sovereign's Badge of the Queen's Service Order (a New Zealand Order instituted in 1975), while Prince Philip wears the uniform of the Admiral of the Fleet in the Royal New Zealand Navy (appointed in 1958).
Each year New Zealand Post releases a single issue of commemorative stamps for the Ross Dependency, the part of Antarctica administered by the New Zealand government. Such a unique and dramatic environment is the home to a variety of interesting bird species. Six birds of the region are shown on the 1997 Ross Dependency issue. Mostly white on the underbody but with a variety of distinctive upper body colourings ranging from pearly grey and bluish black to dark brown and pale blue, these birds are shown in their natural habitat. The Antarctic Petrel, Fulmer; Tern and Prion, and the Cape and Snow Petrel are all available as single stamps, or as a se tenant block of six stamps.

The 'arts' in New Zealand reflect much about our culture, and while entertaining many people also serve to challenge, provoke and excite audiences. A huge range of diverse art forms including opera, dance, film, theatre, literature and others provide the ability for New Zealanders to look at themselves and a vehicle to showcase the many talented individuals involved in the artistic community. The Performing Arts stamp issue is a celebration of the arts in New Zealand. Designer Norris Childs, a student of the School of Design at the Wanganui Regional Community Polytechnic, uses computer-enhanced photographs in his first stamp issue for New Zealand Post. Six broad categories are portrayed, covering most tastes for 'the arts'. The stamps feature modem dance, music, opera, theatre, song and ballet.
There are about 40 recognised domestic cat breeds ranging in size from 2-3kg (smallest) to 7-9kg (largest) when fully grown. It is generally accepted that shorthaired cats have their origins in a species of African wildcat domesticated by the ancient Egyptians, while the longhaired varieties may have sprung from a species of Asian wildcat. In line with the 'Year of the Tiger' from the Chinese lunar calendar, this stamp issue features six cat breeds including the Burmese, Persian, Abyssinian and the domestic 'moggy'. Initial designs by artist Julie Greig are shown. Cats is the second issue in New Zealand Post's lunar calendar series that commenced in 1997 with Cattle for the Year of the Ox. The stamps are printed with a gutter strip running vertically through the centre of the sheet. The gutter panel features a lunar calendar Tiger character. The lunar calendar theme is continued in the miniature sheet for this issue, which is designed in the same manner as the Cattle (Ox) miniature sheet.
DATE OF ISSUE: 18 MARCH 1998
Over the period leading up to the end of the Millennium, New Zealand Post is releasing six stamp issues which look back at the people. industries and social changes which have shaped New Zealand. The first issue. 'Discoverers' was released in February 1997, and in March 1998 we release the second in the series, 'A New Beginning.' This six-stamp issue designed by Terry Crilley of Blenheim represents the people who have left their places of origin to make New Zealand home. The Maori were followed by settlers from Britain and Europe during the 19th century. Many different ethnic groups. including Chinese. Italian. Greek and Dalmations came to New Zealand seeking their fortunes in different industries such as whaling. gold mining and kauri gum digging. Following World War 11 British and European immigrants came to find a new life on the other side of the world, in a country overflowing with promise. More recently New Zealand has attracted close Pacific neighbours and many newcomers from Asia. Initial design concepts for four of the stamps are shown.
Scenic Definitives This pack contains ten definitive stamps featuring stunning New Zealand scenery. Lake Wanaka, Waitomo Limestone Cave. Doubtful Sound. Mitre Peak and other locations are presented with interesting background information and accompanied by stunning photography.
Extinct Birds Humans and the predators they have introduced to New Zealand have caused the extinction of many species of native birds. Seven such species have been chosen as examples of the lost birdlife over the past 1,000 years. A stunning presentation pack with authoritative and informative background information on each of the species featured.
Antarctic Landscapes This 1996 Ross Dependency commemorative issue provides six very different landscapes from this dramatic, remote and fascinating part of the world. Fumerole ice towers, glacier bases, ridges and caves of incredible beauty are pictured and fully described in this great presentation pack.

Discoverers Kupe, Maui, Cook, Tasman, d'Urville and de Surville are the 'Discoverers' featured in this, the first in the 'Millennium' series to be released at 1 regular intervals until ~~~ the year 2000. The 'Discoverers' selected are from New Zealand's mythical origins and early recorded history.

Fly Fishing It is said that the
most exciting method of fiy fishing is dry fiy fishing where the fiy is cast to rest on the surface of the water hoping the prey below will rise to the bait. Licensed trout fishing in New Zealand has been going strong since 1894, with the elusive, wily fish still proving a worthy adversary. Examine four of these magnificent fish in this exciting presentation pack.
Scenic Trains Many New Zealanders, and visitors from overseas, are discovering the pleasure of a train trip through this spectacular scenic country. New Zealand's rail network travels through forests, over viaducts, alongside rugged coastlines and through gorges, mountain passes and wide alluvial river plains. Six of n,..(Âť............. _._ the scenic routes are featured in this pack.
