Over the next three years, New Zealand Post has plans (subject to approval) to issue some of the most exciting stamps ever offered to New Zealand collectors. Topics such as Princess Diana, Super 12 Rugby. the new millennium, the Americas Cup and the Sydney Olympics prove our commitment to presenting you with philatelic subject matters that are relevant and stimulating. We are proud to be actively involved in the renaissance of stamp collecting as a fashionable hobby. And our strategy to change the mindset of many has been innovation. The release of sets like Kiwiana in 1994 broke with tradition and set the tone. Now we are proud to offer you, not just releases such as the 1898 Pictorials Centenary issue, but also access to the virtual world of stamp collecting through our Internet site and our brand new CD-ROM, 'New Zealand Stamps - A Virtual Album: This fascinating, fact-filled journey into the whole history and tradition of philately in New Zealand is the best in the world. On this one CD-ROM, collectors will be able to view a complete catalogue of New Zealand stamps at their leisure, manipulate the images, create their own virtual collections, and even play games. It represents a massive step forward in our bid to make stamp collecting relevant for today's youth, and as such, we are keeping up with, and often ahead of, our colleagues in the USA, Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom. It doesn't stop there though. Stamp Points, another world first in philately. has proven an unqualified success. In 1996, we gave out 48,000 rewards to collectors throughout the country. We expect to exceed that figure for 1997. Many ofyou have written to say how Stamp Points makes you feel valued. Thank you for your feedback. A completely revamped Stamp Hunters Club (aimed at children of all ages!), has also been released, and we expect that the club will really take off as more and more children find entertainment, fact, fun and fulfilment in the zany characters that seem to burst from every page. I've saved some of the most interesting news for last. New Zealand Post has been appointed as an agency for Vanuatu, Niue, Western Samoa and the United Nations. So now it will be much easier for New Zealand collectors to acquire not just the gloriously colourful issues of the South Pacific, with their vibrant topics of tropical fish, birds, artefacts and diving, but also stunning stamps like the Endangered Species collection issued by the UN. So welcome to this first issue of Focus for 1998. I am sure that the stamps showcased here, along with the topics covered above, represent the start of a new era of interest for our hobby. Please feel free to be excited by that thought. I certainly am.

P.S. Please note the new release dates from July of this year. We apologise for any inconvenience that may be caused through these changes.
A cool new look for 'g8 Most avid philatelists were introduced to their hobby as children. Although times have changed dramatically, collecting stamps is still a cool, trendy and growing hobby. Its relevance for today's children is as strong as ever. To reinforce the point, New Zealand Post has moved with the times, and introduced new ways of bringing the hobby alive for kids that will encourage them to take the interest well into the new millennium. Our web site and the exciting and innovative use of CD¡ ROM technology are just two of the newer ways we now reach young collectors. The third aspect is a totally revamped and eye-poppingly different Stamp Hunters magazine, featuring 'new-look' characters, heaps of facts, plenty of things to do and get involved with, and all the latest on what's available stamp.wise and how to get collecting. To arrive at this new approach, we went to the only people who matter - the young collectors themselves - and asked them directly for their brickbats and bouquets. Opinions came thick and fast, and this radical shake-up is the result. Reaction so far has been overwhelmingly positive. Kids liked how busy it was, how much information it contained, the pictures of the stamps... So expect plenty more colour, style and attitude in coming months as further issues of Stamp Hunter make their way to the dedicated philatelists of tomorrow.

the end of the 19th century, New Zealand was definitely a country looking to make its own way in the world. Although England was still UMother" to many New Zealanders, the land
had progressed from being just a colony. The decision not to become part
of the new Australian Commonwealth pointed to the determination of the majority to make a place for themselves in the world. At the same time, there was growing interest in symbols that were uniquely New Zealand and, as more and more settlements celebrated their 50th anniversary. there was a widespread belief that the country had much to be proud of
The Government recognised the incredible tourism potential that access to the country's lakes, rivers, forests and other natural wonders offered. It also recognised that the development of that industry would be heavily dependent on state promotion. So was this issue the world's first tourism promotion issue? There are certainly those who think so. After all, a pictorial stamp issue of notable New Zealand scenery was probably a highly effective way to promote travel to a place whose beauty was famous, but which was still an exotic and little known destination, located somewhere 'down there' below the Equator. But the issue was significant for far more than just its demonstration of marketing prowess. Its most notable asset was that it was a pictorial issue, at a time when such
fI
issues were virtually unknown. Only Newfoundland, North Borneo, New South Wales and Tonga in the entire British Empire had issued pictorial stamps before. This was also the (jrst set of stamps in the country's history that did not include a portrait of the reigning monarch. Certainly, this alone represented a first, albeit tentative, step to assert the country's emerging identity. Whether the 1898 pictorials were issued as part of a tourism agenda we may never know. We will also never know how successful they were as a marketing tool. What is certain is that the 1898 pictorials were immensely popular and continued to be sold in New Zealand, albeit with variations and additions, for the next decade. Today, they are still one of this country's most popular issues with collectors and the decision to celebrate the centenary of their issue should be viewed as testimony to their philatelic significance. The decision in 1894 to issue a new set of stamps that were "symbolical of the land", and to organise a competition for the designs prompted a response of some 2,400 prospective designs from throughout the country. For this centennial re-issue, Ross Jones of Watermark in Wellington has updated the amounts on the 14 designs that were finally chosen, including the two versions of the La.ke Wakatipu stamp. The second of these was re-issued just a month after the original issue because of a spelling mistake in the name. --------_._-_._---------------------As parI ot Ihe cenlenary, a IImlled number ot colleclors will also be able 10 purchase a unique celebrallon ollhls slgnllicanl philaleilc evenl. New Zealanders love the water. In fact, aquatic activities
-
'"'" = ~

account for more than half of all leisure activities in this country and that rate is still climbing. Sadly, however, drowning is the third highest cause of accidental death in New Zealand.
....
IQ IQ
On average, 150 New Zealanders will lose their lives annually, which gives us the dubious honour of having one of the highest rates of drowning in the developed world. Water Safety New Zealand (WSNZ), the national organisation responsible for ensuring New Zealanders are safe in the water, says every New Zealander is potentially at risk from drowning. The risk is exacerbated by the vastness of our aquatic environments.
00
Pre-school children swimming at home in pools represent the greatest at-risk group in the community. Although it has been illegal for more than a decade not to fence a pool, on average, five young children still drown in home swimming pools each year. 42% of drownings result from aquatic recreation. Boaties dominate this group. An average of 26 of them drown every year. Swimmers are also at risk. On average, 18 people will drown every year while swimming. But there is some good news amidst all these grim statistics. While our drowning statistics are still way too high, the emphasis placed on water safety, and the support it has received over recent years, have seen the annual average drowning toll decrease by 40% since 1980. What's more, those figures continue to trend downwards, despite the fact that participation in aquatic activities is steadily increasing. By featuring a child wearing a life jacket and learning to swim, this year's Health stamps aim to remind all New Zealanders how important it is to take care around water and that water safety skills are the most effective way of not becoming a New Zealand drowning statistic.

SCENIC SKIES
For a totally different view of New Zealand, look up. That's what a group of New Zealand photographers have done, and the result is this stunning set of six stamps, featuring skyscapes at Mt Maunganui, Whakatane, Lake
Wanaka, Cambridge, South Bay near Kaikoura and the Lindis Pass in North Canterbury. Aotearoa of course means "the land of the long while cloud". and yet many New Zealanders seem to take that aspect of our landscape for granted. It is almost as if we have got so used to our clear. blue skies and our dramatic sunsets that we have forgotten how beautiful and arresting they really are. Scenic Skies looks to change all that by capturing some of the magic and the atmosphere that make these scenes unique. But while the outlook may be different. the issue itself is very much in line with a long tradition of New Zealand scenic stamps; one that has already featured lakes. off-shore islands. forest parks. waterfalls. rivers. trees. harbours and of course our beautiful coastlines. Hopefully. this issue will prompt us all to stop just for a moment and consider how lucky we really are!

The Nativity itself is a very old and popular subject in Christian art. It depicts the newborn Christ with the Virgin Mary, his mother, and other figures, and is based on the various descriptions given in the gospels of the New Testament. These stories tell of how shepherds minding sheep in a field were visited by an angel and told to find a baby and worship him as the promised Messiah. Three kings or wise men were also told to follow a shining star to the place where they would find the Messiah. They arrived to find the newborn child in a stable surrounded by his mother and joseph.
\0 00
While the story itself has altered little, the visual interpretations of the Nativity have changed substantially through the centuries. Early depictions of the Nativity around the firth century went to some lengths to emphasise that the birth was painless by showing Mary seated and the child lying in a manger nearby. By the 15th century - the time which serves as the inspiration for these designs the depiction of the Nativity was a scene of adoration, with Mary kneeling or standing in prayer before her son, now unclothed and lying on a pile of straw. Please Note: Final designs are not illustrated above.
