When it comes to stamps, I have a passion. That passion is to delight you, our valued customer, and make you proud of the hobby in which you are involved. To do that I am striving hard to have our stamps better known, to have them talked about, and to have them win awards. You may accuse me of having a commercial interest and you would be right, although I firmly believe (and I'm not a collector), that stamps have a magical quality about them that needs to be communicated. This quality benefits the recipient. That's where you come in. I need "unpaid ambassadors" of the hobby to spread the word. Use stamps to educate your children. Send a first day cover to a grandchild. Use a variety of colourful thematics next time you send a letter or parcel. Save cancelled stamps for anyone that you can interest in taking a look. In other words, make time to bring another person into the world ofstamps. At New Zealand Post, we are trying hard to raise the profile of stamps, not only by releasing issues that stimulate and satisfy, such as the 1898 Pictorials and Cats, but also issues that are controversial and create debate, such as Wacky Letterboxes, Nuclear Free and Creepy Crawlies. Our ongoing programme of raising awareness includes television advertising, sponsorship of New Zealand philatelic exhibitions, international support of the Universal Postal Union efforts to promote philately worldwide, running a successful children's stamp club, and the annual Stamp Month promotion. I've always said stamp collecting is what you make it. The hobby could also be described that way. It needs passionate people like you and me to grab it, shake it and hold it up for others to enjoy. You'll feel a whole lot better for doing so. In order to keep our profile up we must continue to produce stamp issues that keep the senses stimulated. I'm sure you will enjoy the issues we have in store for you in this issue of Stamp Focus. We cover the beautiful ice formations of Ross Dependency through to the unusual architecture of the Art Deco world. Popular Pets link us with the ongoing Lunar calendar series, and the Native Tree Flowers are not to be missed. You will also notice we have extended our range of agency countries to include Tonga, Niuafo'ou (the Tin Can Mail Service), Pitcairn Islands and Hong Kong. Happy reading and remember to share the passion. Kind Regards, P.S.

Antarctica is the fifth largest continent in the world, spanning 14 million square kilometres - roughly twice the size of Australia. Only 2% of Antarctica is ice free, and the continent is dominated by an ice cap up to five kilometres thick in places.

-

''"c": t'!

=::

~

Antarctica is a place of enormous and resplendent beauty. Massive glaciers flow down its principal ice cap to merge into flat-topped ice shelves, which then float across the sea.

...~

....

During winter, the Southern Ocean freezes for up to one thousand kilometres from the coast, the extraordinary sea ice effectively doubling the continent's size. The Antarctic sea ice is considered one of the most dramatic large scale occurrences in nature.

I,l)

~

The natural phenomena that surround Antarctica, such as sea flow and wind, are constantly creating fantastic natural sculptures in the ice and they lend a huge and poignant counterpoint to the life that exists there. As the sun gains in intensity during the brief summer, the ice sculptures are further eroded, their vast frozen forms slowly melting under the golden light. Cracks often appear around these formations, and it is here that Weddell Seals keep their breathing holes, helping to ensure their survival. This issue is designed to illustrate Antarctica, an almost entirely unspoiled continent, exquisite in both its beauty and its frigid peril.

New Zealand's cities have been in constant transformation since they originated with the organised European settlement that began in 1840. Many Europeans moved into the countryside some lime after their immigralion, but the towns they had helped build remained as centres of government, ports and rural service areas. By the late 19th century, the main centres of Dunedin, Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland boasted substanlial commercial and financial buildings. Factories to meet local requirements were built, and large department stores serviced both the town and country. In most urban areas, much of the late Victorian classical cityscape survived unlil the 1960's, when economic growth and the widespread adoption of modernist architectural styles saw the proliferalion of much larger office buildings. Between these two phases of urban development, many 19th century houses in the city centres were demolished in response to increased interest in public health and town planning concerns. In the mid 1980's a new transformalion propelled by economic growth began occurring throughout the major cilies. Huge "prestige" office buildings were constructed, their towering structures and mirror glass windows a testament to industry. In recent limes a new trend has emerged - inner city apartment living. Many old buildings are being modified into luxury apartments, or replaced entirely by purpose-built structures. This stamp issue is the third in our Millennium series and features old and new images of six New Zealand towns and cities that have truly transformed since their early days.

Living in New Zealand, you don't have to travel very far in any direction to reach the bush. One of the distinctive features of our landscape, it is a key contributor to our reputation as a beautiful, clean and green country. Due to our long separation from other land masses, New Zealand has developed unique native nora. From the forest to the wetlands, the shrub land to the coast, beautiful examples of our nora can be found in abundance. It is one of the remarkable aspects of our countryside that many native nowering trees can still be found in their natural forest habitats. The total number of nowering plant species nalive to New Zealand is just over 2200, and of these, around 600 grow in native forest habitals. While this number is not large for a country of New Zealand's size and variety, all but a few are unique and do nol grow naturally in any other country. Our native nowers are both delicate and stunning. In general they are not large, and their vibrancy comes instead from the sheer number of nowers on the tree. Both lhe Northern and Southern Rata are excellent examples of this, producing literally hundreds of vibrant nowers. In summer, their bright Christmas red contrasts magically with the deep and viridescent green of the surrounding forest. Around lwo lhirds of New Zealand's native forest has been converled for agricullural use, or destroyed through the browsing of inlroduced mammals such as possums, deer and goals. The Deparlment of Conservation and olher organisations are, however, doing their besl lo protect those bush areas that remain. Offshore islands in particular, represenl a magnificent opporlunity lo preserve many of our native trees and lheir nowers for the enjoymenl of all.

Many of New Zealand's most popular pets are a direct by-product of our pioneering past. Animals such as dogs, horses and cats have all been expected to earn their keep at one time or another, and on New Zealand farms this still remains the case. Horses are still more popular than motorbikes for mustering, and no farm IS complete without a couple of working dogs.

.:1

....IJ:> IJ:> IJ:>

The types of pets New Zealanders keep are as diverse as our people. but some of the more popular ones are dogs. cats. rabbits. ponies and budgies. Other small pets such as guinea pigs. mice and even rats are also well liked. Children are especially delighted and entertained by pets in the household, and are able to form very deep and special relationships with them. While keeping pets can be great fun and highly rewarding, owners must always remember to care for them properly. The SPCA estimates that approximately 30.000 animals are abandoned every year. This issue is designed as a celebration of the wonderful pets with which we share our lives. The issue celebrates the Chinese Lunar Year of the _ Rabbit and features a gutter strip with a lunar calendar figure of a rabbit through each sheet of stamps.

For such a young country, New Zealand boasts a wide range of architectural styles throughout its cities. However, for any construction undertaken in the 1930's, one style in particular was dominant - Art Deco.

-''"" I: ~

IJ:) IJ:)

The rise in New Zealand of Art Deco, or modernism as it was known then, was in part brought about by the Napier earthquake in 1931. which obliterated most of the town. Before the enormous rebuilding that was to follow, comparisons were made between Napier and the young Californian city of Santa Barbara, which had been rebuilt to a uniform style after earthquake destruction. It was considered to be one of California's most beautiful cities as a result. Napier today is sometimes called the Art Deco capital of the world. and many of its buildings are both beautiful and famous. The Rothmans building was built sparing no expense and is considered a classic. The Bank of New Zealand building is also highly interesting, with its extraordinary blend of Art Deco styling and Maori art. The two are perfectly combined, creating an effect that is both Art Deco and a unique statement of New Zealand. Other New Zealand cities are also home to some stunning examples of Art Deco. The Civic Theatre in Auckland is thought of as the country's most spectacular theatre building, and has many outstanding features typical of the Art Deco style. The Hotel Waterloo and the Hotel St. George in Wellington also provide excellent examples of the period. This four stamp issue shows classic examples of Art Deco architecture from around New Zealand.

the lead up to the new millennium we are reminded of items and images that evoke a feeling of nostalgia for the past. We are not only looking forward, but are also taking the time to look back. This six stamp issue is a continuation of the highly popular Millennium series, and is all about reflecting on our past and on the things that make New Zealand unique. These stamps may remind some of the days of free milk in schools, others of popular childhood toys. The Nostalgia series is all about the memories that we treasure, both as a nation and as individuals. While the new millennium will bring its own unique items of "Kiwiana", this collection of items is a look at some of the most famous and familiar pieces from our past.
