As we approach the new millennium, some of you may be wondering
what will the future hold for our hobby? Will the next generation share our special interest? Part of the constant challenge is making the hobby appealing to the younger generation. The last few years have seen us: exploring new technologies (Stamps CD-ROM and Stamps internet site); including popular topics in the annual stamp programme (Wacky Letterboxes, Town Icons and Rugby Super 12); spreading the word with television; and continuing our commitment to junior collecting with the Stamp Hunters Club. While the future is something that we can't easily predict, the sight of junior collectors hunting for complete sets, participating in Stamp Month and showing their finds off to their friends is reassurance that the hobby will live on. The first issue of Stamp Focus for 1999 has an international flavour commemorating two important world events. We start with PhilexFrance '99, the World Stamp Exhibition in Paris from 2-11 July.[ollowed by an issue commemorating the series ofAPEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) meetings being held in New Zealand, culminating in the Leaders' Meeting in Auckland in September. This meeting constitutes the largest and most internationally significant political meeting ever held in New Zealand. We take a look back at the 1999 New Zealand U-Bix Rugby Super 12 stamp issue, which pays tribute to a sport which is as synonymous with New Zealand as the Kiwi and our beautiful scenery. In July we take a stroll through native New Zealand with Scenic Walks, and Stamp Focus previews the Christmas stamp issue for 1999. These beautifully illustrated stamps celebrate 'the Christmas spirit ofgiving: It's a very special time of the year, so why not share your passion for your hobby by gifting some of the very special philatelic products you will find in this issue of Stamp Focus. We also give you the opportunity to start or add to your collection of overseas stamps. From Schonbrunn Palace to tropical fish and Bounty Relics, each country tells its story through its stamps. We also feature the first day covers for Vanuatu, Niue, Pitcairn Islands, Tonga and Niuafo'ou. We want you to have your say in our annual Stamp Poll. What did you think of the stamps issued by New Zealand Post during 1998? The stamp programme reflected our diversity as a country, from our emerging identity - 1898 Pictorials Centenary to our Town Icons and Underwater World. Why not join the Limited Edition special priority waiting list in this issue? Make sure you don't miss out on any of the great stamp issues we have planned for 1999 by setting up your own Standing Order. You can choose what items you would like to automatically receive from sets ofstamps to presentation packs and first day covers. For more information on setting up a Standing Order please contact the Stamps Centre, New Zealand Post Limited, Private Bag 3001, Wanganui, New Zealand. Kind Regards,
~~

The French National Assembly approved the issue of the first French postage stamp on 24 August 1848. This stamp symbolised the Second Republic, in the form of a serene Ceres, goddess of the harvest, depicted in profile. This stamp didn't go on sale in French post offices until
1 January 1849. Soon after, it was replaced by the effigy of Napoleon Bonaparte, reflecting the transition of France from Republic to Empire. As well as celebrating the 150th anniversary of the first French stamp, the exhibition will also mark another, major historical landmark. During the show the French Post Office will issue its last stamp denominated in francs; all further issues will be in euros. The exhibition will be held from 2-11 July 1999. French and foreign visitots alike will have a chance to discover this city steeped in history, art and culture. To commemorate this event, New Zealand Post will release 2 miniature sheets and a souvenir cover. These products will be available both at the exhibition and in advance to New Zealand Post customers. The first miniature sheet features some of Doris Lusk's paintings, and the second is Part 2 of the Underwater World miniature sheet set. Part 1 was issued to commemorate Australia '99 and when combined with Part 2, forms a greater picture, from the yacht in full sail to the whale in the ocean depths. The decor of the exhibition will induce a trip through space and time and include interactive entertainment to provide a glimpse of the future.

The U-Bix Rugby Super 12 has been around for 4 years now and brings together the cream of rugby's playing talent from New Zealand, Australia and South Africa. The competition is extremely popular, and most matches are played in front of capacity crowds, from King's Park in Durban to Carisbrook in Dunedin. The Auckland Blues have won the competition twice, while other New Zealand teams have been present at both the semi-finals and the final. Last year Canterbury Crusaders won the final and this year the hot debate continues over who will be the champions.
