As Chief Executive Officer of New Zealalld Post, I have beell illvited by ViI' Beck to address you in the last Stamp Focus of this millenni",". TIle lumillg of the miller"'ium is a ollce in a lifetime celebration. TIlere is something very special about beillg the first nalion to see the lIew dawn. TIlis is a time whell we look back and forward, rememberillg but also wolldering what the future holds for our families and ourselves.

To commemorate the significance of this evellt, this issue of Stamp Focus is a speci,,1 etlitioll, showcasing for the first time, Ihe closing chapter ill the Millellllium Series: P"rt Six - First to see the New Dawn. Released on 1 January 2000, this issue is available for o,riering 1I0W. TIle Millennium Series appmprialely begall with the Discoverers stamp issue ill 1997 alld all six issues culmillate and are pmudly presellted in the New ZealQJId Post Millermium Collection album, available ill advance in this issue of SIamp Focus as well. Looking back over Ihe last millennium, we have celebrated mQ/!y significallt aspects of who we are as New Zealallders and as a lIalion, including our eme~ellce as a tourist destillatioll; our people, from artists to famous personalities; our involvemenl in music and sport; our industry; and our beautiful flora and fauna, always pmminently featl/red in our diverse annl/al stamp programmes. Our stamps are miniature pieces ofart that reflect who we are, wllere we have come from, our aspirations and our achievemetlts. As collectors you will have witnessed a great deal of change over the years. New Zealand collectors have seen the

deregulation of the postal industry. leading to new players in the market. This has pmvided us with competition which is beneficial for you, the consumer. It has also resulted in the development of new services especially for small and medium sized New Zealand businesses and the eme~ence ofother postal labels including Kiwimail. As New Zealands leading postal service and the official provider of New Zealand stamps, we can assure you that we will continue to meet your needs as we enter a new era. Stamp collectors worldwide have also seen the impact ofchanges ill technology on printing processes, the ease ofbeing able to gather illformation about their collection and trackillg down that elusive philatelic item. What hasn't changed is our commitment to innovation and the future of stamp collecting as a hobby. The First to see the New Dawn stamp is the first time New Zealand Post has intmduced micm-printing into the stamp design. This century has seen many New Zealand firsts illcluding experimenting with our first circular and diamolld shaped stamps, the first New Zealand stamp to featl/re a website address, the first New Zealand hologram stamp and the first scratchie stamp to celebrate the Centenary of New Zealand cinema. TIle future of our hobby depends on the investmellt we make in our young collectors. In recogllition of this, we have continued to invest in junior collecting in New Zealand. TIle Stamp Hunters Club is thriving, ellcouragingyoung New Zealanders to leam about the stories behind the stamps and the enjoyment of stamp collectillg. As the millennium tums, you can look forward to an exciting stamp pmgramme with something for yOlmg, traditiollal

and thematic collectors from Classic Cars to KiwiarlQ I1 and tile celebration of the Queen Mothers 100th Birtllday. We will continue to ill novate, alld give collectors like yourselfa reason to be pmud ofyour country's stamps. We invite you to build your collection with some of the striking products in tllis issue, and encourage you to share your hobby with someone you know. Kind regards,

~~()~ Elmar Toime, Chief Executive, New Zealand Post Limited.

By the mid-1950s, New Zealand entrepreneur Bill Hamilton had turned Archimedes' idea for a water-jet craft into the first successful water jet propulsion system to drive propellerless boats. Our country's young age is certainly an indication that such ground-breaking developments will continue. It is our strongest hope, for it gives us every reason to believe that, given our track record, New Zealand will continue to lead the way into the future.

The new millennium is nearly here. and we are set to celebrate this momentous event in a number of ways. Invercargill will be one of the last cities in the country to see the sunset of the present millennium. Sunset is expected to take place around 20.42' New Zealand Standard Time, 21.42' New Zealand Daylight Time. As evening falls, and the parties to start the new age and welcome in the new year swing into gear, the focus shifts across the sea to Pitt Island in the Chathams. This island. a New Zealand territory, will be the first inhabited place on earth to witness the new dawn on 1 January, 2000. At around 3.59' New Zealand Standard Time, 4.59' New Zealand Daylight Time, those standing on Hakepa (44' 16'S. 176' IOW.) will greet the light. No doubt it will be a very emotional moment. It also seems highly appropriate that Hakepa, derived from the language of the Moriori, means The place which receives the first rays of sunlight' and Where there is the awakening of the life force which is held within'. To celebrate the passing over from one mill~nnium to the next, New Zealand Post is issuing a 1999 Last Sunset cover, featuring a round Kiwi stamp with a gold sun overprinted in the selvedge. What makes this feature particularly interesting for collectors is that the round purple Kiwi stamp is no longer available for sale, and only a small quantity of these stamps has been overprinted to mark this occasion. The New Zealand Post website address is also contained in the gutter of the special sheet of 36 stamps, pictured here. "Both sunrise and sunset times can vary from the

calculated times by up to 3 or 4 minutes due to atmospheric conditions.

Breathtaking sunsets and sunrises take place between August and the end of October, punctuated by vicious blizzards that can rage for days at a time. By November, the sun no longer sets, and there is continual daylight through until February. By March, autumn has set in, bringing with it more extraordinary night skies.

This issue is our opportunity to see the night skies of the Ross Dependency for ourselves, and the very special effects they create¡ naturally. 'Sea smoke', for example, forms over the open waters of the McMurdo Sound and the Ross Sea in autumn, when the air temperature is much colder than that of the water. Careful though, because appearances generally in this part of the world can be deceptive. The delicate pink alpenglow looks warm and inviting on the flanks of Mt. Erebus, but in fact October is the coldest time of year, with evening temperatures plummeting to as low as ¡40'C.

There is no denying the drama of the landscape however, and the lingering sunsets seem only to accentuate the jaggedness and extremity of this New Zealand claimed territory. Black Island against a yellow sky. rugged ice towers pushing skyward in the Ross Sea, the pillars of sea ice around Ross Island painted in yellow evening light, mother of pearl clouds billowing overhead... this issue presents us with six stunning images of a truly remarkable place.

CARDPLUS WINNER Congratulations to Susan Keenan (rom Christchurch, who recently won a special selection of rare New Zealand stamps by responding to the recent Card Plus Standing Order promotion. Susan was delighted to add them to her collection of New Zealand stamps that she has been collecting since childhood. Susan also collects British and Australian stamps. She works for the Christchurch Art Gallery and loves the detail of the old New Zealand stamps that were printed using the old intaglio printing process. She is pictured here with Jeremy Ross. Business Development Manager, Stamps.

There is much to look forward to in the year 2000 and in the years to come, both in terms of stamp topics planned and innovation in our programme. In this Special Preview Supplement to the Millennium Edition of Stamp Focus, you'll see the first few stamp issues of year 2000. First, there's "Spirits &- Guardians'; the fourth in the lunar series started in 1997; next, the "Gold Round Kiwi"; and finally, a sequel to the much loved Kiwiana stamps issued in 1994. But it's not just the topics that we can look forward to. For some time now, there have been some common themes in philatelic media and customer feedback which suggest that New Zealand Post releases too many issues, too many stamps and that the face value of the stamp programme is higl1. We have spent a great deal of time in recent months analysing this feedback, along with how we might best go about addressing these concerns. ' We found that the fluctuating number of issues and stamps was of more concern to our customers than the actual face value of the annual programme, which has remained less Own $100 over 4 of the last 6 years. Exceptions were when New Zealand Post reduced the medium sized standard letter rate

~

from 45c to 40c and when we introduced selfadhesive stamps which enhanced postal use for a great many New Zealanders. We included all stamps, miniature sheets, exhibition miniature slleets, framas and Ross Dependency itl our calculations. The Year 2000 programme, as it appears in your pocket stamp calendar. incorporates a reduction in the number of issues, the number of stamps and a slightly lower face value than in 1999. We acknowledge that many collectors also buy first day covers, presentation packs, maximum cards and other value added products to complete their collection, but we believe that a base issuitlg programme of less than $100 compares well with other hobbies atld pastimes. We shall continually review how we construct the stamp programme to ensure we provide a variety of topics for both collectors and the New Zealatld public, and also in a mantler that allows us to cOtltitlue to itlvest itl the hobby, especially through Stamp Hunters. Most important of all, we shall contitlue to create stamps for which New Zealatld has a worldwide reputation for excelletlce, and of which all New Zealatlders can continue to be proud.
