To celebrate the new millennium the Kingdom of Tonga has released two special stamp issues. The first, released on 1 December 1999, was a se-tenant strip of 4 stamps and depicted the eel bration of the dawning of the new millennium day with a group of Tongan peopl greeting the dawn's rays. Some are in traditional dress and most are wearing "kahoas", the intricat necklaces that are woven from fragrant flowers and used at times of celebration. The second issue, released on 1 January 2000, includes 4 stamps and a miniature sheet. The stamps are circular with dove wings die cut out of the circle and printed in 5 colours with embossed silver foil. The designs incorporate elements that are special to the Kingdom including the Kalia, an historical, double-hull d cano that was reconstructed for use in th celebrations to mark the beginning of the 3rd Christian millennium.
------Vanuatu welcomes the dawn of the new millennium with its unique Pacific flavour. This issue celebrates the ancient traditions of custom life and the rich flora and fauna of the country. The montage of images merges to create a spectacular miniature sheet.
