If you have been a collector with a keen interest in postal history for a long period of time, you will have followed the changes of the last decade with considerable interest. First, New Zealand Post was corporatised and transformed into a successful State Owned Enterprise. Second, we became one of only a handful of countries in the world to operate in a fully competitive market. Add to this the impact ofglobalisation and eCommerce and you have all the ingredients for a rapidly changing market. New Zealand Post has responded positively to these challenges in order to position itself as a successful business in this new environment. We have, for example, recently launched an electronic bill payment service called eBill that enables customers to receive and pay a range of household bills through the Internet. We recognise that some customers will continue to choose to pay their bills in a more traditional way, but that a growing number of people prefer the immediacy of a medium like the Internet. Many of our business customers now seek a different range of services and, for example, some have asked for customised stamps. In response we plan to trial a customised stamp service which it likely to include sheets of ten 40 cent selfadhesive stamps. Each business in the trial would add their desired image within a template design on the stamp. These stamps would be available for use (and possibly for sale) by the particular business and not sold over the Post Shop counter. Should the trial prove successful it may lead to the introduction of an ongoing service. Our core programme this year is as varied as ever, from Olympic & Sporting Pursuits to a beautiful scenic issue reminding us of New Zealand's natural beauty. There has been some media interest recently about our plans to commemorate the Queen Mother's 100 years. We hope you enjoy this issue, timed to coincide with her birth date on 4 August. Some customers do ask for royalty stamp issues and we believe this is a significant occasion in history. independent of the republican debate. There is no doubt the market will continue to change and that New Zealand Post will need to keep adapting to stay ahead. However, we believe the majority of the population will continue to be most easily accessed via the letterbox and so there will be an ongoing need for an efficient means of payment for that communication (like a stamp!).
We hope you enjoy our stamp programme in the months ahead. Kind regards,
~d Viv Beck, Stamps General Manager.

significant event. Hosted by Royal Mail, it was the 6th exhibition of this size held in London. Visitors were awed by the displays of rare philatelic material as well as over 3,000 frames of exhibits. A very popular exhibit were the displays kindly borrowed from the collection of Her Majesty the Queen. The Stamp Show also catered for the noncollector looking for a good day out, with separate youth areas featuring Postman Pat and the opportunity for visitors to get their own personalised stamp. The New Zealand Post exhibition miniature sheet and souvenir envelope remain on sale, by

The latter relates to her coronation, at which time she became the first Lady of the Thistle.

This year marks another change in this category's history with the topic being extended; however the Sc surcharge will, as usual, only apply to three of the stamps. This year, this popular annual stamp issue features another collectable - Bears & Dolls - much-loved friends of any child. Ross Dependency stamps, now issued on an annual basis, first eventuated in 1957 and were discontinued after 30 consecutive years with the closure of the New Zealand Post Office on ice. Due to popular demand, Ross Dependency stamps were re-introduced in November 1994, not postally valid in New Zealand but available for collectable purposes. Some of the stamp issues released since 1994 are still available as presentation packs for only $8.50 each. The topics include: 1995 Antarctic Explorers; 1996 Antarclic Landscapes; 1997 Antarctic Birds; 1998 Ice Formations; and last year's Night Skies. The stamps are also available separately for Night Skies.

The transportation that will be featured will be the RNZAF C130 Hercules: Hagglunds BV206 All Terrain Carrier: Tracked 4 x 4 Motorbike: ASV Track Truck: Squirrel Helicopter; and Elan Skidoo. Skidoos, or motorised toboggans, can tow sledges or trailors weighing up to 1,000 kilograms and perform better in soft snow conditions. They are generally used for working around the stations and in field research. Helicopters are also an important part of Antarctic operations and are often used to transport expeditioners from ship to station, and to remote locations for aerial photography. Quads (4 x 4) are four-wheel drive all-terrain cycles with high Ootation tyres and are the main form of transport around the stations for short distances in the field. Antarctic Hagglunds are rubber-tracked vehicles with fibreglass cabins made by the Swedish company Hagglunds. They are predominanlly used as passenger-carrying vehicles and for search and rescue. i
