It's an indication of things to come with our 1 Janual)' 2001 issue that features 100 YealS of Moving the Mail. From the early days of horse-drawn coaches to the latest in bill payment technology, it's quite a stol)'. Recently I read a friend's autobiography and it was fascinating to see that so many things we take for granted today did not exist when my friend was a young boy (like television!). The first stamp issue of the New Year is an interesting colledion showing the ways mail has been carried around New Zealand over the last 100 years, including horse delivel)' the mainstay of the mail service in the early 1900s. The cover image is the Nelson to Blenheim Mail Coach crossing the Wairau River for the last time before the bridge opened on 24 Janual)' 1913. There are many more stories to be told with this issue, which also includes modem day aircraft transportation and eledronic communication. One month later, we present you with the fifth issue in the New Zealand Post Lunar stamp series to commemorate 2001 as the Year of the Snake. Marine Reptiles includes two colourful sea-snakes - the Yellow-bellied Sea-snake and the Banded Sea-snake - and the four most common turtles that can be found in New Zealand waters - Leathel)' Turtle, Green Turtle, Loggerhead Turtle, and Hawksbill Turtle. During July, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother attended a series of events 10 mark her 100 years. On 19 July she arrived with her grandson, The Prince of Wales, for the start of her birthday pageant. the biggest of the events leading up 10 her birthday on 4 August 2000. More than 20,000 people assembled at HOl5e GuaIds Parade, London, for a colourful and J91t-hearled pageant peying trilUle 10 the 6fe and work of the Queen Molher. The cast of 7,000 included people on carnival floats and in vintage cars, celebrities, a massed choir, the Royal PhiIIannonic On:heslra, 100 horses, five camels, bulls, sheep, chic::kens, and even two of the Queen Molher's aqis.

Our flora and fauna first appeared on a stamp with the release of the famed 1898 Pictorials. Each year, we release a set of stamps that does justice to New Zealand's reputation for stunning scenery. Our scenic stamps have proven a favourite with many of our collectors. winning the most amount of votes in our collectors' Stamp Poll for three years running with the $10 definitive of Mount Ruopehu (1997). Scenic Skies (1998) and scenic WJlks (1999). Earlier this year. in July. we selected six images. taken by New Zealand photographers, of Scenic Reflections on water at some of the more picturesque locations in the North and South Islands. Add the complete mint set of these latest scenic pictorials to your collection or send it overseas to show family or friends the true beauty of our country.

You may remember the release in March of this set of four new Scenic Definitives - $1, $1. 10, $2, and $3 with a selection of snapshots of New Zealand. Images include the Taiaroa Head lighthouse on the Otago Peninsula, the drama of the Kaikoura Coast in the South Island, Great Barrier Island - the first place in New Zealand to use 'ainnail' postage, and Cape Kidnappers - home to one of the world's two known mainland gannet colonies.

On 2 October, New Zealand Post released two new Scenic Definitives to facilitate a rate change for Standard Post (9OC) and FastPost ($1.30) extra large letters within New Zealand. The new 90c stamp design features the gentle, symmetrical shape of Rangitoto Island, one of the most distinctive landmarks of the Hauraki Gulf, replacing the equally iconic Waitomo Caves 90c stamp issued in 1996. This superb volcanic landscape is home to the largest pohutukawa forest in the world. The $1.30 stamp design features Lake Camp in South Canterbury. This small lake is situated on the plateau between the headwaters of the Rangitata and South Branch Ashburton Rivers.
