Once again, our stamps are breaking new groun d in content and design. As you'll see on page 10, we've taken an exciti ng new approach to the latest series of Chinese lunar calen dar stam ps, which we released in January as part of the Chinese New Year celebrations. Having comple ted 12 issues on the lu nar series - to match the 12 years in the calendar - it's time to start again, and I know you'll love the refreshingly colourful new look. This year is also time for the second in The Anzac Series - a wonderful stamp series that honours the men and women who have served, and continue to serve, so selflessly on our behalf in the army, navy and air force. 'Comrades in Arms ' pays tr ibute to five New Zealand military units and thei r courage and teamwork in times of confl ict - an extraordinary story that's covered in more detail on page 2 in a special article by Dr Stephen Clarke , the Chief Executive of the Royal New Zealand Returned and Services' Association. And if you haven't orde red it already , you won 't be able to resist our Giants of New Zealand coll ection! I know this series is going to be a [pardon the pun] mass ive hit with youngsters, parents and teachers everywhere .

Night after night
Night after night Kiwis flew in the air war over Europe dur ing World War II. The most famous of the New Zealand squadron s of the Royal Air Force IRAFI was 751NZ! Squadron, which by the end of the war had flown more sorties and suffere d more casualties than any other in the European theatre, and which was awarded more than 100 medals for gallantry. Sergeant Pilot James Or Stephen Clarke. Cmet Executive. Royal Ward received the Victoria New Zealand Returned and Services' Cross after crawling Assoc.auon IIncl out onto the wing of his aircra ft at 13,000 feet to put out a fire. He reassu red his mother that he had been 'careful' but within weeks became one of the 1,850 New Zealand fatal ities in Bomb er Command - the one in three fatality rate making it World War II's equivalent of the Somme or Passchendaele in World War I. A new memo rial , designed by Weta Work shops and recently unveiled at the Auckland War Memor ial Museum , commem orates those New Zealanders who served with the RAF Bom ber Command . On ANZAC Day too, as the dawn light pierces the night , remember those Kiwis who night after night flew into the dar kn ess and those who did not return at dawn . 'They shall grow not old. as we that are left grow old..:
On wh at has always been for them 'the one day of the year ', veterans reunite to remem ber those who did not return; marching with their com rades to the war memorial and back through their warti me memories , The trend over recent years has been an increasing numb er of young people attending ANZAC services, not only to com me mo rate the dead but to celebrate our living veterans and their stories . A unique and often emo tional day of pride and me mories, ANZAC Day conti nues to unite us, and remind us of what it means to be a New Zealander. So this ANZAC Day, joi n our veterans at your local m emor ial and back at the RSA clubrooms afterwa rds ; hear thei r stories and remember wit h them those New Zealanders with whom they ma rched all those years ago... Antarctic flyover If you're looking for a once-in-a-lifetime collecting opportunity in 2009, this could be it l On 17 January 2009, New Zealand Post chose a unique and exciting way to Join the celebrations to mark the 100th anniversary of the first positioning of the South Magnetic Pole - the point on the Earth where a compass needle able to move vertically and horizontally points straight up. In conjunction with the Australian Royal Society of Victoria, we sent a special consignment of 100 Sir Edmund Hillary silver proof coins and 2,500 2008 Ross Dependency first day covers on a 'centenary Ilyover of the South Magnetic Pole. The 12-hour flight, on a specially chartered 350-seat aircraft. included international scientists as well as 60 'young science ambassadors' - final-year students drawn from schools in Australia . New Zealand . Canada. Finland and the United Kingdom . The flyover honoured the three people responsible for the discovery - Professor Edgeworth David, Douglas Mawson and Alistair Mackay - who were members of Ernest Shackleton's British Antarctic Expedition of 1907-1909. While Shackleton and three others tried to reach the South Pole. this trio undertook a gruelling four-month. 1,600-kilometre journey to their own destination.
Commemorating the British Antarctic Expedition, it includes a unique cachet that officially records the 2009 flyover. However, there 's only a limited number of these first day covers available, so you'll need to place your order soon! We also recommend that you order one of the 100 commemorative coins available , of which one was presented to His Royal Highness the Duke of Gloucester. Beautifully presented in a silver proof finish, they come with their own individually numbered certificates and appropriately celebrate the life of New Zealand 's best-loved hero. Sir Edmund Hillary. Sir Edmund Hillary had a strong and enduring connection with Antarctica. having led a New Zealand team to the South Pole in 1958 and visited Scott Base for its 50th anniversary in 2007. just a year before he died. The exclusive release of these first day covers and coins is a great addition to the 2009 New Zealand Post collection . They're a must for those with a passion for history!
The flyover was a huge success. and as a special offer the New Zealand Post consignment is now on sale - so how about buying yourself a slice of history? The first day cover is a superb memento of the South Magnetic Pole anniversary.
50 years ago - Red Cross Back in 1959. New Zealand Post issued this three-penny stamp to commemorate the centenary of the birth of the Red Cross concept. Featuring a map of the world and the Red Cross flag , it also carried a one-penny surcharge to raise funds for the organisation.
- and later proposed the creation of relief societies in each country that would be auxiliaries to the army medical services, and a legal basis that would oblige armies to care for all wounded, whichever side they were on.
The story of the Red Cross started during the War of Italian Unification, when in 1859 Franco-Sardinian forces clashed with Austrian troops near the small town of Solferino in northern Italy.
In 1864 Dunant's dream was realised with the establishment of the first national relief bodies, whose members wore armlets showing a red cross on a white background .
Swiss businessman Henry Dunant 11828-191 D) was visiting the area and witnessed for himself the more than 9,000 wounded who'd taken refuge from the fighting. Seeing thousands lying unattended, Dunant JOined the local women in caring for them for several days and nights
In New Zealand, community groups raised money and sewing circles created warm clothes and bandages for New Zealand and allied servicemen during World War I. These early groups unified in 1914 to form the New Zealand Branch of the British Red Cross and Order of St John - an organisation that, through volunteers, provided support and relief during World War I, the 1918 influenza pandemic, the Napier earthquake, World War II and the 1953 Tangiwai disaster, when 151 people died in New Zealand's worst railway accident. Today, more than 75 years after the New Zealand Red Cross Society was formed, there are more than 150 branches and groups active throughout New Zealand, with more than 5,000 members and 20,000 volunteers. They offer a huge range of programmes designed to improve the lives of vulnerable people in our commun ities, as well as first aid and emergency management services and training . Helping more than 24,000 people in New Zealand communities each week, the Red Cross continues to playa vital role in our social and economic wellbeing .

New Zealand stamps go under the hammer An extraordinary collection of early New Zealand stamps wen t under the hammer on Thursday 19 February 2009 in New York. It was entirely devoted to our first issue, the stamps known either as 'Full Face Queens' because they depict a frontal view of a youthful Queen Victoria , or as 'Chalon heads' because thei r design was a por trait by Alf red Chalon RA.
All collectors of New Zealand stamps would like to own these 'London prints', but not many do, because there never were many of them - in particular, only 12,000 of the one penny and 8,000 of the one shilling were printed, and a good many of those must have gone up in smoke when fire in the Well ington Post Office in 1856 destroyed ÂŁ180 wort h of stam ps.
The stamps were issued in New Zealand between 1855 and 1873. IAfter that they were replaced by a new issue that depicted a side face view of a now more mature monarch - the 'Sidetaces]
So as a test , what London prints do we find in this collection? All values are there, both mint and used as singles . For the penny, there is also a mint pair With large part original gum luniquel, a used strip of four luni que!. and a pair on cover lone of three known - this IS the earliest!' For the shilling, there is a cover with the stamp bisected at Otago for use as 6d [six pennyl, and othe r covers bearing a single and a pair.
In the preface to the sale catalog ue, Gerald Ellott MN ZM described what was being offered as the finest extan t collec tion of the Chalon heads. Who could possibly arg ue? Everyth ing was there - and not just present, but present in the choicest possible conditio n and in the form of the most exceptional surviving pieces. When the Chalon heads were first produced in 1855, the stamps were engraved and the prin ting plates prepared in England by Perk ins , Bacon & Co. The plates were then sen t to New Zealand, complete with waterma rke d paper, ink, cancell atio n devices - and our earlies t printed stam ps, which had been produced in London .
The sale maintained that extraordinary standard throughout its 531 lots . And we are told this is only Part 1 of the collection... Stamp collecting is an international hobby, and New Zealand stam ps have appeal that extends far beyond the bounds of our own isla nds. That is well illustrated by this sale, The owner, Joseph Hackm ey, a form er resi dent of Israel, now lives in London , and the sale took place in the Spink Shreves Galleries in the United States. Coming soon Auckland Harbour Bridge 50th Anniversary On 30 May 1959 the Auckland Harbour Bridge was offici ally opened . It didn't take long to realise the benefits of this piece of infrastructure and within a shor t amo unt of tim e it wa s obvious the bridg e was not going to cope with the growth in traffic volumes. In 1969, a box girder 'clip- on' wa s added to each side of the four - lan e br idge, to increase the number of lanes to eight. Fifty years since its opening, we celebrate th is as being one of the most significant infra stru cture proje cts New Zealand has ever undertak en. Putatara by Brian Flintoff
Orange resin hei tiki by Rangi Kipa
In ancient mythology the putatara was first blown to signal the success of the god, Tane, in his mission to ascen d to the topmost heaven and obtain the baskets of knowle dge necessary for survival on the Earth . It was noted that these were so special that people would recognise the identity of an approaching visitor by the sound of the putata ra being played.
Aware of the increasing shortage of traditional materials such as pounamu [greenstone] and whalebone, Rangi Kipa has begun to experiment w ith new materials, incl uding the plastic corian and resin. He frequently plait s with plastic rather than harakeke for his whi riwhiri cords .
This taonga [treasu re] has been em bell ished by carving a double face on the mouthpiece . This represents the two different sounds it can produce, the male trumpeti ng voice and the female crying sound .
