Legal tender coins 2011 All Blacks Coin: the silver fern
2011 All Blacks PNC: the silver fern
When a uniform consis ting of a black je rsey w ith a silver fern was proposed by Tom Ellison at the first-ever New Zealand Rugby Football Union meeting in 1893, a powerf ul internat ional brand was born . From that moment on, the silver fern on a black background became an inspirational symbol synonymous wit h the team known as the All Blacks. Distinctive for its silver undersi de, the native ponga fern is well known as part of New Zealand's national identity.
To celebrate the stro ng connection between the silver fern and the All Bla cks, New Zealand Post is releasing the '2011 All Blacks PNC: the silver fern'. The copper nickel coin is reverse proof-l ike in quality, and silver in colour. The offic ial All Blacks logo is raised in the centre, with frosted low-relief fern s adorning the background . The PNC also feature s two offic ial All Blacks stam ps in denomin ations of 60 cents and $1.90.
New Zealand Post is proud to present the first- ever All Blacks coin and it's all black! The 1 oz silver proof coin has been struck in 0.999 pure silver, and the black reverse face is given even more impact with a repeating silver fern design shim meri ng in low relief. The 'one doll ar' denomination and the official All Blacks logo shine th rough in silver at the coin's centre.
The '2011 All Blacks PNC: silver fern' is just the second PNC that New Zealand Post has produced in the past five years , Our last PNC sold out in just thre e weeks, so be sure to place your order now to avoid disappointment.
The coin sits in a stri king black acryli c presentat ion panel featur ing the values of the team in stylised print. It's in the Post November will see the release of the exciting new book It's in the
Post: The stories behind New Zealandstamps. The New Zealand Post special edit ion book features an exclusive foreword by New Zealand Post Chief Execut ive, Brian Roche, Written by Richard Wolfe, the book looks back at 150 years of stamps in New Zealand - celebrating unique stamp designs and placing them in their historical, polit ical and social contexts, It recognises that postage stam ps are mu ch more than a means of sending mail - they are a reflect ion of our nat ional identity, and offer a unique for mat to capture significant moments in New Zealand' s history,
art ists and techn ical experts who have produ ced New Zealand postage stamps in the past 150 year s. The only book of its kind in the New Zealand market, It's in the Post makes the perfect Chr istma s gift for stam p collectors and anyone interested in graphic design or New Zealand history, Addit ionally, the first 50 books will be personally signed by Br ian Roche,
New Zeala nd's postage stam ps have come a long way since 1855 when the country's fir st postage stamp featured an image of Queen Victor ia. The stam p was a fitting representat ion of New Zealand's al legiance to Br itain at the time, but as New Zealand's culture changed and developed, postage stamp designs followed suit. Nowadays, New Zealand' s postage stam ps portray a wide range of subjects, from those of historical significance such as the annual ANZAC issue, to those capturi ng the beauty of the nat ion, and even celebrating 'Kiwi ana'.

100 Years of Surf Life Saving The summer of the surf lifeguard It will soon be the Summer of the Surf Lifeguard. On beaches around he country. celebrations will be held to commemorate 100 years since a group of New Brighton community leaders decide d by the liqh of an oil lantern to create a Surf Life Saving Club . Their decision sparked a century-long legacy of heroic service on the beach .
Above: Members of Taylors Mistake Surf Life Saving Club compele in the final of the bellman 's cham pionshi p dur ing the ew Zealand Champ ionships held at Lyall Bay, Wellington, February 1937.
There has been huge change since tha t night. Those early lifes avers patroll ed through summer afternoons in woollen togs. They carried out stnct training regimes through winter in local pools and gyms. Toget the chance 0 patrol they had to gain a bronze Surf Medalli on hat required them to know each of the SIX positions on the li fe saving surf reel.
our beaches In 1910. drowning was so prevalent It was known as the New Zealand death. That has all changed In 100 years thanks 0 he vigilant eyes of the surf patrols standing ready to race In 0 the surf. They have helped save mo re than 50.000 people and the lifeguard is now an Icon of the New Zealand summer. Tha legacy will be recognised in the season to come . Surf Life Saving started its centenary celebrations In September with a Gala Dinner The centenary book - Between the Flags - tells the stones of our first 100 years. With stunning photographs and tales from the surf. We look forward to a summer of centenary surf carnivals, a tounng exhibition and a very special National Charnprcnship at the home of Surf Life Saving - New Bnghton - in March 2011. Around the country, local surf clu bs will celebrate their own proud traditions. Those 73 clubs are proud to be recognised in a set of beautifully designed stam ps by New Zealand Post. They show surf lifesavers at wo rk under the watch ful eye of the stoic beach guard - ready as always to spnng to action at the Sigh of an upraised hand or the soun d of a cry for hel p. His is a story old in thousands of lives saved from the surf. And these stamps are a II trnq tnbute to 100 years of service between the flags . Bob Harvey Presid ent Surf Life Saving New Zealand
For decades the reel was the icon of Surf Life Saving . It sat in the centre of the beach, and was used In nearly every rescue . Knowing how to expertly man each of ItS six positions was of paramoun t Importance. The SIX Man Rescue and Resuscuat ron event wa s ho tly contested a every su rf com peti tion , m ost fiercely at the coveted Nelson Shiel d. It was the 1970s before Surf Li fe Saving took a giant leap forward from the reel and line, abandoni ng it as its sole resc ue method and adopting fins and tubes. Lifeguards freed them selves to be a tota l beach rescu e un it. No lon ger were they chained to th e centre of the beach but fr ee to roam beyond the flag s in search of swi m m ers in danger. That progr ess conti nued and New Zealand became the fir st country to adopt an air resc ue service . The organis atio n experi m ented first wi th rescu es fro m a sm all far m helico pter and eventually sponsorshi p doll ar s and public suppor t allow ed for bigger and better machines. Now the service is a well fun ded and finely honed operation. The wild West Coast IS pat roll ed by a su per b Jet Ranger with a fully prolessional crew. Surf lifeguards too have evolved and local volunt eer brigades have ransfo rmed in to highly disciplined un its. Li feguards pat rol the who le beach and are well train ed ath letes ready for any Situation . Young nippers practise each weekend to ensure lifesaving con tin ues In fu ure generations. Only the litesavmq spirit of selfless service has rem ained the sam e throughout the century. Surf Life Saving remains a movement that unites all people, fro m plumbers to school teachers, in saving lives for their communities. It ISa vit al service .
