The birth of His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge on 22 July 2013 caused a stir around the Commonwealth. It also made for exciting times at New Zealand Post, as we raced against the clock to bring you a stamp and coin issue celeb rating the royal baby. We thought we'd give you an idea of what goes into produ cing such a significant stamp and coin issue - step by step . Step One: Initial concept
Step Five: Await the name
In the month s leadin g up to the birth of Prince George, we put our heads togeth er and came up with a concept for a stam p and coin issue.
With the image s purchased, we turned our focus to the name of the new baby. We had heard that the announ cement of the new Prin ce's name could com e anyth ing from a few days to a few week s after the birth. 50 we were incr edibly plea sed when William"and Kate announced their baby's name as George Alexand er Louis just a couple of days after the birth . We wer e also relieved that th e fir st nam e was reasonably short - as anything longer may have proven tri cky to fit on a stamp'
We chose to feature the 'Princely Cor onet' on the silver proof coi n. The Prin cely Coro net is a type of crown that 's assigned to th e childre n of the Heir Apparent [The Prince of Wales!. whic h incl udes Prince George' s fathe r, the Duke of Cam br idge. We also decided to use a stylised kor u design on the stam ps and coin, as koru are symbolic of new lif e and give the produ cts a uniquely 'N ew Zealand' eleme nt.
Step Two: Submit concept to the Queen for approval . With the initia l concept finali sed. we subm itte d the designs to the Queen for approvallminus the name and date obviously!1With in about two weeks, we received news back fr om the Palace that The Queen was happy with the design s - subject to the images being used and the cor rec t nam e and dat e.
Step Three: Await the royal birth At thi s point we joined the re st of the world in a hugely publicised waiting qarnel We were incredibly excite d when the birth of the Prin ce was ann oun ced. and knew that the next few days would be extr em ely busy. As soon as the birth was confir med, we were able to put the date of birth on our coin design. and continue to the next stage of product ion.
Step Four: Obtain images When the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge stepped out of the Lindo Wing of 5t Mary' s Hospital. they were well awar e of the masses of photographers waiting to take shots of their new fam ily. They posed for hund reds of photos and chatte d to the pre ss happil y. Within a few hours the photos were available through Getty Images, and we went about choosing the ones we wanted to use on the stam ps.
4
Step Six: Submit final design to the Queen for approval At this point the name , date and phot os were added to the stamps and the design was finalised . All that was left to do was subm it them to the Palace for approval a second time and wa it. Around ten days later we received an official letter back from the Palace stating that the Queen and the Duke and Duche ss of Cambridge had seen the final designs, and wer e happy for us to pro ceed! After such an involved and tim e- criti cal approval pro cess it's hugely satisfying to get these produ ct s produ ced and delivered to you. We hope you enjoy them as mu ch as we enjoyed putting them toqeth erl

Farewellivor Masters What is the biggest change you've seen in the world of stamps and coins ? The world of collecting has changed. Whilst we still have traditional collectors, others collect stamps and coins for different reasons - for example. there might be a theme they can relate to. and they may not buy again until that theme is repeated. Also. the electronic substitution of mail has meant that the number of stamps being used for postage has declined , and as such, topics have become more varied and relevant to non-traditional collectors. What did you enjoy most about your role as the Head of Stamps, Coins and REAL Aotearoa?
After his almost 25 years with New Zealand Post and 12 years as the Head of Stamps, Coins and REAL Aotearoa, we were sad to say goodbye to Ivor Masters in August. Ivor contributed significantly to the Stamps. Coins and REAL Aotearoa business over the years and his leadership played a pivotal role in the success of the business . Ivor was a great supporter of philately and numismatics and often presented around the country at clubs and societies . He will be missed by the staff at New Zealand Post as well as the collectors. stamp clubs , postal agencies, mints and dealers with whom he developed close relationships around the world. We wish him all the very best for his retirement. and we caught up with him before he left to get his closing words on the matter. When you started at New Zealand Post in 1989, did you ever th ink you would still be here in 2013? I arrived in New Zealand in 1989 and quickly secured a role at New Zealand Post. At the time I was intending to keep my options open. but staying with the company long term turned out to be the best decision of my career. If you hadn't spent the past 24 years in the stamp and coin busines s, what would you have done instead?
I think I would have become involved in the finance sector - possibly looking at entrepreneurial opportunities to grow businesses and being involved with new technologies . However, working at New Zealand Post certainly met my aspirations.
6
I loved the role. It exposed me to many new aspects of life. and my knowledge of New Zealand's history and culture grew immensely. I was part of a very talented team with regard to the delivery of the programme. to whom I am very grateful for making my role such a pleasure. Most of all. I met some wonderful people around New Zealand through visiting clubs and societies and through the many communications I had with collectors. If they're reading this. I'd like to thank them for making my role so enjoyable. What was the biggest challenge you faced in your r ol e? I think the biggest challenge was keeping stamps and coins relevant in a changing world, and making sure that our products remained appropriate and interesting while still reflecting the culture and heritage of New Zealand. If you had to pick, what would be your favour ite stamp and coin issues produced by New Zealand Post wh ile you worked there?
That' s an unfair question - I really liked all issuesl One that stands out is The Lord of the Rings as it was the first issue to attract such widespread global interest. The America's Cup. Rugby World Cup 2011 and 'scratch and sniff' stamps also come to mind. but it's not an easy question to answer! What are your plans for your retirement ? I live on a lifestyle farm with cows. sheep. chickens, cats and dogs. so my initial focus will be to spend more time on the land and become more self -sufficient. I expect to dabble in some form of business. which is likely to be a web-based business offering products and services around Wairarapa . I'm sure my wife Susan has an ever-growing list of tasks for me and I have eight grandchildren whom I am very much looking forward to spending more time with. I think I'll be busy! On a final note. I'd like to thank everybody I've met over the years. especially New Zealand Post and my direct employees for everything they've done to make my role such a pleasure. I will miss them! www.nzposl.co.nZ!Slamps

Discover the Ross Dependency through stamps Our Ross Dependency stamps have a rich history - outlined here by Br ian Vincent, Vice President of the Royal Philatelic Society of New Zealand . The first stam ps bearing the name 'Ross Dependency' were issued in 1957, Those four stam ps were produce d for use by membe rs of the New Zealan d Antarctic contingen t that participa ted in the Trans-Anta rctic Crossing Ithe two hig her values were for use by the British members of the partyl, The New Zeala nd contingent was led by Sir Edmund Hilla ry. The Ross Dependency was cla ime d as a New Zealan d territory by a Br it ish Orde r-in-Council in 1923 and today it is pro tecte d by the Antar ctic Treaty signed by New Zealan d and 11 other nations in 1959. Scott Base is New Zealand's permanent Antarctic station and the 25th anniversary of the opening of this base in McMurd o Sound was commemorated bv six stamps issued in 1982,
The Ross Dependency is justly famous for the beauty of its icy lan dscapes, its rugged terrain and its wilderness, Some of these features were shown on the 1996 and 1998 stamps, the latter set depicting some magnificent ice formations. We cannot forget the weather - the Night Skies stamps of 1999 featured some spectacular weather phenomena - and also Antarctica's seasons amongst our overview of the territory, with a summer's day having 24 hours of daylight and with a winter's day of 24 hours of darkness. e o v s ~~.~~~::"DE"'Cl'

Behind the stamps: New Zealand Native Ferns
In February we issued the New Zealand Native Ferns stamp issue, which portrayed five distinctive New Zealand ferns. We caught up with the designer, Dianne Fuller of 2Di4 Design and Stephen Fuller, illustrator to find out what goes into designing a stamp issue. What attracts you to designing stamps? Designing stamps is a r eal honour . As New Zealand Post says, stam ps are a window int o New Zealand 's past, prese nt and futur e. They crea te a uniqu e view of its landscape , people, wi ldlife and cul tu re. To be part of thi s and to create somethi ng that will be tr easured in years to come , long afte r we stop designing , is fantast ic! Because of the small size and the qual ity printing methods used to produce stamps, it's nice to be able to ach ieve a gr eat level of detail on some thing so small.
Once you receive the design brief for a stamp issue, what is the next step? Research is always the next step. For the nat ive fern s issue, we got in contact wi th botanist Patri ck Br ownsey from Te Papa who has written a book about native New Zealand fern s. We chose fern s that were iconic in New Zealand, tha t were disti nctive in shape, that had interesting features and that could be rea dily found . We worked throug h what we would lik e to depict on each stamp, and how it would follow the 'structure' of the fern as a botani cal study. Patri ck took us into the Te Papa Herb ari um, so we could see real specimen sheets that had been arc hived. Then it was one trip to Kaitoke Regional Park with Patri ck, and one trip to Otari Native Botanic Gar den and Wilt on' s Bush Reserve with Rewi Elliot (Botanic Garden Manager at Otari-Wilton's Bush) where we collec ted live samples of each fern we were illustra ting .
Were the illustrations done by hand, or on the computer? Stephen created the ill ustrations by hand - on th e computer. He draws straight into the computer with a 10
pen and tablet la tabl et is li ke a larg e mouse pad that sits in fr ont of the comp uter screen; the pen - as its nam e suggests, looks just li ke a writin g pen that is used by drawing dir ectl y on the tabl et!. The computer doesn't do anything you don't tell it to do: just li ke wor king wi th paper , pencil s and paint, you need to know how to paint and draw in order to get th e r esult. This is the new 'by hand'.
Do you have a preference for hand-drawn versus digital artwork? We work ma inly for design and adverti sing agencies , so with th e speed at which we are requir ed to work, work ing digitally is the only reali st ic way. In saying that, if the bru shes and pr ogram s were not as advanced as th ey ar e, Stephen wouldn't use them . He was the fir st illu strator in Wellingt on to use the pen and tablet back in 1995, and r eally got into mastering digita l ill ustration. Stephen is traditi onally train ed, which is an advantage when tran slating to digital illu stra tion. He uses the computer program s the same way he thinks about paint ing traditionally, except he doesn't have to wai t for the work to dry, and it's easier to correc t if the clie nt mak es a change!
What inspired the look and feel of the New Zealand Native Ferns stamps? The issue foll owed th e New Zeala nd Nat ive Trees issue, using visual cues of botanists' specime n sheets and draw ings that relate to the 'stud y' of each plant. The fern issue becam e our herbarium - a place whe re we keep all our reference collec tions of ferns mounted on card , but in our case live sam ples, not dr ied. So elements like the rul er and the colour swatches and drawing s were all thing s we saw on our visit to the Te Papa Herb ar ium.
What was the biggest challenge with the New Zealand Native Ferns stamp issue? Finding th e cor rec t species in th e bush, and capturi ng th e detail! We didn 't reali se there were so many diff erent kind s of fern . Having peopl e like Pat rick and Rewi alo ng with us made thi s iss ue easier than the New Zealand Native Trees issue, wh ere finding the correc t species proved mor e diff icult. We were reall y ra pt with the end pr int jo b; it trans lated exactly as we had crea ted it. www.n epost.co.nz/ stemps
