How Long have YDU been part of the Stamp s and Coins team?

About six years . In that time I have met some great people and worked on severaLstam p and coin issues.

I joi ned the team as a bright -eyed, bushy tailed gra duate in October 2013.

What is your favour it e stamp or coin issue that you've designed?

What is your favourite stamp or coin issue that you've designed?

That wouLd have to be the Webb Ellis Cup 3D stam p. It was an exciti ng process work ing in conj uncti on with OuterAspect to come up with tec hnolo gy never 'seen before on a New Zealan d stamp. The pr inting technique applie d to th e stamp gives the Webb Ell is Cup such incredibLe depth and dim ension.

I'm going to have to go wi th Endangered Seabirds. We're always trying to incorporate new technolog ies into our wor k, so I spent a lot of time with the production team and the pri nters getti ng the thermochromic silhoue ttes correc t. It was awesome that we were able to fully ill ustrate the sad rea lities of the decl ine in seabir d population numb ers, as well as illust rate the threats these bird s were up against - so that we can. I hope do some thing about it!

What is your favourite stam p or coin issue that you didn 't design ? The 50 Years of Friendshi p: New Zealand and Samoa , designed by renowned art ist Michel Tuffery. I Love everything about this coin; the research that went into th e design and every aspect of the coin design itself are so detailed and in-depth. The packaging too (the ava bowL! is unique and really enhances the whoLe story. Both visually and conceptually, it's a st rong coin.

A circulating commemorative coin at last... David Galt FRNSNZ President, Royal Numismatic Societyof New Zealand New Zealand's public and stamp collectors have enjoyed a rich environmen t of comme mo rati ve stam ps on their everyday mail for decades. You have to go back to the early 1950s to find a year wi thout a commemo rative stamp . It's not so in New Zealand coins. From 1933 when the firs t official New Zealand coins were issued unt il 2015, there was just one circ ula ting New Zealand commemorative coin - the 1940 silver half-c rown, with a face value translated into 25 cents of decimal currency. It showed a Maori wahi ne against a backdr op of a Maor i pa and modern 1940 high -rise build ings, celebra ting the 1DOth anniversary of the Treaty of Waitangi with a somewhat idealised view of progress over 100 years. The design by L C Mitchell must have gripped the public imagination though . The coin was immediately hoar ded by the public of the day, despite 100,800 being released into circulation at face value. We know this because they turn up in large numbe rs in slightly circulated condition and never heavily worn . There is just enough wear to show that some were used for a time. Half a crown was a signi ficant sum to put aside at the time - a quarter of the weekly wage of a young school leaver, or $11 in today's money. It might have paid the people of the day to keep it though. Even an average one now retails for $25 and an uncirculated one brings $ 150. The coins are popular wit h overseas collec tors as well as with Kiwis. The circula ting commemorative drought has broken at last wi th the issue of New Zealand's fir st coloured circula ting coin as well as a world fir st - the fir st padprinted coin put into circu latio n. The Royal Numismatic Society of New Zealand has been campaigning for years for this issue. It matt ers because there is still a good demand from the public for circulation coins for easy, fast, cash transac tio ns. Their use gives the public the chance to see our history, art, culture and heroes , our work and our playa s they go about their everyday transactions. We can all feel that pride as we are remin ded of things that reall y matt er to us. And, of course , people can sta rt takin g mor e interest in coins.

commemoratives since its 197350 pence for accession to the European Economic Community. The United States has been in the business much longer with two distinct bur sts, but has excelle d itself with commemorative quart ers 125-cent piecesl honourin g each state since 1999 and currently cele brating national parks. The Eur opean Union allo ws each mem ber state to issue commemo rative 2 euro coins each year and generates some wonderfu l designs that cross borders, cele brating for instance the Olym pics ; the tenth anniversary of the euro, and nati onal heroes. You can see from these other exam ples that we could have a lot more to look forw ard to. The gr eat thing about it is tha t it can even be self-fun ding. If enough people put the coins aside, the Government need not be up for a cent towards the cost. So congra tulations to New Zealand Post, Reserve Bank and the Government for making it happen. The coin itself has a design to be proud of. With Australian and New Zealand soldiers standing back to back with heads bowed in remembrance , it captures the essence of Anzac for Kiwis well. Also to be congratulated is the designer, Dave Burke, an artist whose work surely deserves further platforms. We'r e off to a good start. It was fitting that the coin was launc hed by Lieutenant General The Right Honourable Sir Jer ry Mateparae, GNZM, 050, Governor-General of New Zealand, with suppor ting speeches by the Governor of the Reserve Bank, Graeme Wheeler , and the Chief Executive of the New Zealand Post Group, Brian Roche. Perh aps the best thing in the speeches at the offic ial launch ceremo ny at Governm ent House on Tuesday 10 Februa ry was th e hint fr om Graeme Wheeler of mor e to come. The Reserve Bank says on its websit e that it "will assess demand for the Anzac circ ula ting commemo rative coin before making any decisions about fut ur e mi nts of circ ulating comme morative coins." Let' s not waste this opportuni ty!

With this issue, we are joining other developed countries that celebrate the thin gs they value in their pocket change. Australia has a huge numb er of commemora tives in circ ula tion , wi th its firs t decima l commemora tive dating back to 1970 for Captai n Jam es Cook's voyage of discovery to Australia, just aft er his fir st visit to New Zealand. Kiwi Kitchen

Date of issue: 6 May 2015

Date of issue: 1 July 2015

New Zealand is home to a number of diverse species, many of which live in our oceans. In this marine fauna stamp issue, we take a look at the native shells that can be found on our shor es. Shells are hard, protect ive, outer layers cr eated by cr eatures that live in the ocean. By the tim e they've washed up on our shores, the cr eatures that cr eated the shells would have long since decomposed. The shells photographed for this stamp issue are part of Te Papa Tonqarewas extensive collect ion.

Contemporary New Zealand artist Jason Kelly br ings class ic Kiwi cooking to life on this vibrant, retro -style stamp issue, Kiw i Kitchen. In the same style as his ser ies of work titled 'Sweet As', this stamp issue contain ing 18 stamps celebrates all kinds of Kiwi favourites, from onion dip to whitebait fritters. The artwork on each of the stamps has been hand -painted on recycled wood panels and then shrunk to stamp size. Keep an eye out for this unique issue in July .
