The Royal New Zealand Navy is celebrating 75 years since its establishment with a year-long series of events under the banner Operation Neptune. New Zealand Post is joining the celebrations with a commemorative stamp issue. Operation Neptune is a name with a sombre history, paying homage to the single greatest loss ever sustained by our Navy, HMS Neptune was lost in a minefield during WWII with the loss of 150 New Zealand sailors on board, The Navy has had a full year of commemorative events to celebrate its anniversary, with more to come. A television documentary featured on Anzac Day, showcasing the deployments of two of our ships, HMNZS Te Kaha and Wellington, The Naval Museum at Devonport is running an exhibition celebrating 30 Years of Women at Sea. Women have served in the navy since 1942, but it wasn't until 1986 when a trial was authorised to offer women sea-going postings in noncombatant ships. By 2000, restrictions on women serving in combat were abolished across all services.

From August to November actor Mark Hadlow, of The Hobbit fame, is bringing a naval comedy to New Zealand stages. The longer show, Siemens Presents The Complete History of the Royal New Zealand Navy is paired with a riotous children's pantomime, Commander Claire and the Pirates of Provence. Proceeds from the shows will be donated to local charities. The premier event of the 75th anniversary is the International Naval Review in November, with warships from all over the world visiting Auckland, There are likely to be 3,000 to 4,000 visiting sailors. There will be a street march through Auckland CBD, ships will be open to the public, and an Expo will feature on Queens Wharf,

In July Tauranga honoured the crew of HMNZS Te Kaha with the freedom of the city. The charter, rarely given, allows the ship's company the right to march through the city's streets "with drums beating, bands playing, colours flying, bayonets fixed and swords drawn". Over 100 crew marched from the waterfront to the council, where the charter was issued. A creative competition is offered to secondary school students, asking them to submit a proposal that covers the themes of courage, commitment and comradeship, while telling the story of the Navy's origins and mission.

With a strong tradition of Christmas stamps, and to mark the most popular sending time of the year, New Zealand Post wanted to do something extra special for the 2016 Christmas stamp issue. Beautifully hand-painted by artist and designer, Donna McKenna, the stamps bring a traditional nativity scene to life. Each stamp features a character from the Christmas story, and together they make up a complete scene on the miniature sheet.

An advent calendar with a difference The nativity scene is expanded further on a very festive collectable - an advent calendar. Complete with a stable and animals, the advent calendar is a unique gift for children, grandchildren and the young at heart. Use it to count down to Christmas Day; behind each of the pockets you'll find a charming New Zealand Christmas illustration. Best of all, behind five of the pockets, you'll find the five Christmas stampsl Keep them as a beautiful collectable or use them on your Christmas mail.

About the designer Donna McKenna has been a freelance designer/illustrator since graduating from the Wellington School of Design. Her 2016 Christmas stamps are the latest of many philatelic issues that have been completed over the years, predominantly featuring flora and fauna. Donna's Scenic stamp issue won the French Stamp World Cup competition 2001 for the world's most beautiful stamp. Donna's studio is surrounded by the abundant native bird life of Wadestown, Wellington, where she lives with her husband and family.

Competition! You can win one of ten advent calendars simply by purchasing anything in the order form and answering this question:

Which classical painting featured on the New Zealand Post Christmas stamp 50 years ago (in 1966)?

There's no denying that Sir Peter )ackson's The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings motion picture trilogies hold a firm place in New Zealand pop culture, and their legacy lives on through New Zealand Post's commemorative stamps - one of the most popular stamp series ever produced in New Zealand.

Creating a Middle-earth masterpiece We spoke to New Zealand Post Graphic Designer, Richard Payne about the process of creating the quintessential Middle-earth collectable.

-_ .. __.---..

~.-

-~"'_._"

For the first time, each miniature sheet produced by New Zealand Post for each of the six films is now available in the ultimate collectable: A Journey through Middle-earth. This beautifully crafted book has been inspired by the journal written by the Hobbits Bilbo Baggins and his heir Frodo Baggins in both The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. It comes complete with an embossed leatherette cover, fastened with a button modelled from the waistcoat of Bilbo Baggins. With a strict limit of only 2,000 books produced, you'll need to order quickly. Inside the pages, which have been printed on premium textured paper, you can relive this great adventure with the film synopses, quotes from your favourite characters, conceptual illustrations and stunning photography. Each of the miniature sheets contained within is individually numbered, making them uniquely collectable.

a pRecious SCamp... To really set this book apart from the rest, inside you'll also find a never-seenbefore stamp. This exclusive stamp features the one ring embossed in 22-carat gold foil. and sits within a miniature sheet featuring the Iconic map of Middleearth. Each of the 'One Ring' miniature sheets contained within the book are individually numbered, so make sure you don't miss out l Unnumbered versions of this miniature sheet will also be available individually [in limited quantities]. 6

What did you enjoy most about creating A Journey through Middle-earth? For me I enjoyed reliving the experience of creating something magical m the world of Middle-earth, for one last time. Having previously designed The Hobbit product, It was great to be amongst all the amazing artwork for The Lord of the Rings tnlogy - I am a big fan of the films. Did you face any particular design challenges? Definitely. It was a huge, time-consuming project as I had never designed a book of this nature before. I learnt a lot in the process. I spent many hours finding the most filling graphics and intertwining them with stamps throughout the journal, representmg them In an interesting way. It was also quite a lengthy process to find key character quotes from the six films that really spoke to the true nature of the characters featured on the stamps. As you can imagine, there was a lot of material to work With! What do you think fans will find most exciting about the product? I think it's the whole concept and execution of the journal that fans of the trilogies will love. Not to mention it includes some graphics and stamp products that our fans won't have seen before! After creating all three stamp issues for The Hobbit trilogy, how does it feel to wrap it all up with this ultimate collectable? Honestly, it feels like the end of an era, which is a little sad - having spent four enjoyable years working with Warner Bros to come up with awesome products. But at the same time I couldn't have thought of a better way to wrap up the Middle-earth journey than with this book. It makes it all worthwhile knowing that 2,000 books are going to be keepsakes for years to come, and fly off the shelves to fans worldwide. The magic of the The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings will never end'

Collector news New order forms

In the past couple of months you would have begun to see a new style of order form if you are signed up to our stamps or coins mailing list. The new order form is in a booklet form, and contains imagery and information about each new stamp and coin issue offered. This has replaced the previous order form and brochures. You can still fill in the order form section as normal and return it to us in the envelope provided. We won't be offering older products on the monthly order forms, but these are available through our websites, as well as in each Focus magazine. We hope you enjoy the new order form, and don't hesitate to get in touch if you have any feedback. 2016 New Zealand Banknote Set Earlier this year we issued the 2016 New Zealand Banknote Set on behalf of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand. This limited edition set featured the newly designed banknotes in matching numbers and was limited to only 1,000 sets.

We experienced high demand for this product; it sold out in just 48 hours l If you would like to ensure you receive products like this in the future, please get in touch with the customer services team to set up a standing order. Queen Elizabeth 11 - 90th Birthday coin delays We would like to apologise for the delays that some customers experienced in receiving their Queen Elizabeth 11 - 90th Birthday coins and the 2016 New Zealand Proof Currency Set.

An unforeseen production issue was encountered in the minting of this coin, which was beyond our control. The quality of our coins is extremely important to us, and we felt it was imperative to re-mint a portion of the coins in order to deliver a superior product. Please be assured that we are taking action to minimise the likelihood of a similar delay occurring in the future.

Staff profile

What is your favourite stamp or coin issue from New Zealand Post? When did you join the company?

I joined NZ Post in 2012 in a different department and by the end of 2013 I started in the stamps and coins team. One of my best decisions. What's your day-to-day role?

My day-to-day role is to interact with international and domestic customers, not only managing the relationships [sales and service) but also looking for new opportunities in existing markets and in new territories where we do not have representation.

Business Relationship Manager Nauman Chaudhry is part of the stamps and coins team in Wellington and manages business relationships both domestically and internationally, particularly in the coin market. 8

What's the most rewarding part of your job?

To me the most rewarding part is when a satisfied customer gives top-notch feedback about our products and services.

I am proud to say that every issue is my favourite as it represents New Zealand's culture, heritage and history. Our stamps and coins are unique because we are innovative. If you could do another job for a day, what would it be?

Frankly speaking, I enjoy my role with the stamps and coins team and would not change it for a million dollars, Tell us something that might surprise us about you.

Ifs a funny one. I always wanted to play a musical instrument and guess what I learned to play - the bagpipes. I got so good that my high school band nominated me 'The head piper' and I represented my school for a few years with distinction, nzposl,co.nz!stamps

Christchurch 2016

Stamp and Postcard Exhibition This national exhibition will be held from 18 to 20 November and will feature a full range of philatelic exhibits plus postcards and other collectables nearly 5,000 pages of material in total. The theme of the exhibition is the centennial celebration of the founding of the Canterbury INZ] Aviation Company by Sir Henry Wigram. Henry Wigram became aware of the potential of aviation during a visit to England in 1908. Unsuccessful in persuading the New Zealand Government to become involved in aviation, he formed a private flying school in Christchurch in 1916. This was the second in the country, the Walsh brothers having opened the New Zealand Flying School in Auckland a year earlier. Wigram purchased land at Sockburn for his Canterbury [NZ] Aviation Company, and at his own expense purchased three Caudron biplanes from Britain. The aims of the school were to train pilots for the war, to promote aviation in local defence and to pioneer commercial aviation. By 1919 the school had built 10 aircraft and trained 182 pilots. Wigram offered the school to the Government for defence purposes, but it took another four years and a ÂŁ10,000 donation before the Government accepted. The airfield at Sockburn was renamed Wigram in honour of its founder. Wig ram was also one of the founders of the Canterbury Aero Club, and was the first patron of the New Zealand Aero Club in 1930. He was knighted in the 1926 New Year Honours in recognition of his public service.

In 1949 his widow Agnes presented the Lady Wigram Trophy, and an annual motor race was established at the Wigram air base. Today most of the area is a housing subdivision, but it also provides a base for the Air Force Museum of New Zealand. The venue for the exhibition is the Addington Events Centre, the same venue as the 2012 exhibition. This is the home of horse trotting and greyhound dog racing, and is located at the Addington Raceway, 75 Jack Hinton Drive, Christchurch. There is plenty of free on-site parking, and the public transport service frequently passes the venue. There are many motels close by in Lincoln Road, and others nearby in the suburb of Riccarton. New Zealand Post is the exhibition's official sponsor, and will have a central stand at the exhibition to provide for those wishing to purchase stamps and other products, or arrange for the daily cancellations to be applied to mail items. There will also be a number of stamp and postcard dealers, and various club meetings. Special events are planned for the Friday and Saturday evenings. Newsletters and further details about the exhibition can be found at cps.gen.nz. Just click on the CHCH2016 section on the left menu. The website also provides details of the full range of souvenirs, most of them focused on the aviation theme. Jeff Long, Jury Chairman

Recent issues from Niue & Tokelau Niue Humpback Whales

Tokelau MV Mataliki

16

The iconic Oceania humpback whale was hunted almost to extinction last century, and while its recovery has progressed in the Pacific, it remains endangered. Today, the Niue Whale Sanctuary is one of the best places in the world to view thiS amazing creature. The four stamps in this special stamp issue feature humpback whales in Niue exhibiting a range of behaviours for which they're famous.

Tokelau's population of approximately 1,400 relies entirely on shipping for the transport of passengers and goods, as there are no flights to and from the atolls. This nautically inspired stamp issue celebrates Tokelau's new ferry MV Mataliki, which set off from Apia, Samoa on 3 February 2016 on Its first journey to Tokelau.
