The British & Irish Lions Tour has been captivating rugby fans since the first Tour in 1888. The concept was first dreamt up by a couple of English cricketers, Alfred Shaw and Arthur Shrewsbury. They organised the first Tou rand, as they say, the rest is history.
Every four years the British & Irish Lions tour the Southern Hemisphere visiting South Africa, Australia and New Zealand on rotation. Once again it's New Zealand's turn to host and compete in a series that captivates a nation. The 2017 Tour will bring with it thousands of fans, both local and overseas. Every team's colours will be worn with pride by their supporters and the roar of the crowds will fill the stadiums. As the motels fill up and the fans entertain themselves around the country, the players will be training hard to make sure they are in optimum playing condition. The series will begin in Whangarei on 3 June and conclude on 8 July in Auckland. Over the course of six weeks, ten matches will be played in seven different cities against eight different New Zealand teams. Last time the British & Irish Lions visited our shores, New Zealand Post created a special stamp issue to commemorate the event. The rugby jerseys of each team are worn with pride by players and fans alike. That's why this garment was chosen as the influence of the 2005 stamp issue. The jerseys were represented in every way on the stamps, from their shape to their colour - it was an issue that any fan would have been proud to have in their possession. This year New Zealand Post is again commemorating the British & Irish Lions Tour with an exciting new stamp issue. This time the focus is on the Tour itself, with the unique attributes of each match location and the team colours captured in these remarkable stamps. The stamps feature on a map of New Zealand, so collectors and tourists will be able to follow the Tour and track the progress of the teams as they face off in an epic rugby battle. New Zealand Post has also produced two limited edition commemorative coins for this captivating sporting event - one brilliant uncirculated coin and one minted from 1oz silver. The coin design depicts rugby players from New Zealand and the British & Irish Lions coming together in a hongi. The hongi is a sacred Maori physical embrace where two people become one by pressing noses and foreheads together. The Lions badge is a historic and cherished symbol that represents the union of four rival nations. Keep an eye out for this stamp and coin issue from 3 May. 3
Remembering the Knight family 100 years on 1917 The Darkest Hour follows mother of ten Ellen Knight through the loss and hardship she faced during the war. Through an interview with her granddaughter Nancy, we gain an intimate look at the life of Ellen and her children. Nancy and her family were integral to the development of the 1917 stamp issue and New Zealand Post would like to thank the Knight family for sharing their memories, photographs and documents with us. What is your connection to Ellen Knight, featured on the 1917 The Darkest Hour stamp issue?
She IS my maternal grandmother - the eldest of her ten children was my mother Dorothy [Varnhaml. How did you discover your family's role in the war? Do you think the war had an ongoing effect on the family?
I was brought up with the facts, as my father Stuart Varnham was also a First World War veteran and then a Territorial officer. My three uncles who lost their lives were often talked about in the context of their early lives in Dannevirke. The loss of Herbert, George and Douglas would have had a huge effect, as immediately the rest of the family had to look after Douglas's farm at Mokoroa until Ken [the fourth sonl was able to take over, which meant leaving the timbermilling In the Dannevirke area. Do you remember Ellen from your childhood? What is your fondest memory of her?
My grandmother was 93 when she died in 1966, so from my childhood until after I was married I saw quite a lot of her. As a family in the 1930s we spent holidays in Levin where she then lived. I was about 11 when I had a holiday staying at her place on my own. We both loved parsnips, so we had them roasted every day except one when we had them mashed with carrots, and there was home-made blackcurrant jam on toast for breakfast.
Nancy Croad at the Auckland War Memonal Museum Cenotaph on Anzac Day 2016 She IS weanng her father's 11 miniature medals and her service medal from her time as a military nursing sister
letters. This applied to George in particular as he was away from home the longest and he spent quite a bit of leave time in England. And it was sad for those of us who were missing out, as the other brothers were very popular with all. The letters were kept in a box that had gone with Ellen in all her moves, to Dannevirke, Mokoroa, Levin, Auckland [three times!. Gisborne and Whakatane where she died. I'm assuming that during all that time they were never re-read and possibly no-one ever knew of their existence until her death.
How did it make you feel to read your family's letters, knowing that Ellen's sons never returned home?
How do you think Ellen and her sons would feel about their family's story being honoured on stamps?
Having already transcribed my father's 1915-1919 diaries when the box of letters was presented to me, I was very keen to learn about my uncles' doings. However, as I did, I felt extremely sad and at times angry for them that they had not had the chance to return and tell of their experiences as they had mentioned many times in their
When I first transcribed the letters more than 20 years ago it all felt 'very raw', but I wanted to make them available for the family so did a small print run pnvately as I did not think it right to make a profit from them. The originals were donated to Alexander Turnbull Library for safe-keeping and of course they then became available to researchers. Now, 100 years since they were written, I have come to think that their and others' stories should be readily available. They would probably have felt much the same as me initially about sharing it all with others, but seeing how others are interested to learn I'd like to think they would now approve. Ellen always thought of her boys as 'heroes' and George in his letters talked of coming home as a 'hero', so I hope that the acknowledgment New Zealand Post is giving them will be of some fulfilment.

Ideas worth spreading from a desert of ice

This year New Zealand is celebrating the 60th anniversary of Scott Base, one of the oldest research facilities in Antarctica.
To mark this special occasion, Antarctica New Zealand teamed up with TEDx to produce an event worthy of the inspirational continent that is Antarctica.
Each of the ten speakers was hand-picked and had to pass an intense government screening process in order to attend and partake in such a rare event.
New Zealand Post was proud to be a sponsor of this incredible TEDx event and continues to strengthen its ongoing relationship with Antarctica New Zealand. Antarctica New Zealand plays an integral part in the development of the annual Ross Dependency stamp issue, and New Zealand Post also funds an annual Antarctica New Zealand scholarship.
These unique visitors had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience this desert of ice, with its vast and everchanging fields of glaciers. Divided by an epic mountain range, this often sub-zero continent is inhabited both above and below the ice by incredible creatures. Little over 100 years ago the race was on to reach the South Pole, with explorers from around the world trying their hand at conquering the hostile expanse of Antarctica. Even now, with base camps set up and scientists coming and going, it remains a place that few people have, or ever will. set foot on.
TEDx Scott Base was the first event of its kind. TEDx is well known worldwide for its knowledgeable and inspirational speakers, who humbly share their 'ideas worth spreading' with anybody willing to listen. Teamed up with Antarctica New Zealand, TEDx was able to broadcast this national celebration from international soil, with speakers, collaborators and viewers from all over the world. The aim: to inspire a global conversation with Antarctica at its heart. The isolation of Antarctica and Scott Base meant that the usual way of running things with a stage and audience was slightly more difficult than usual. Scott Base is first and foremost a research facility, but the TEDx event brought many non-scientific guests to the site. The speakers comprised a journalist, astronaut, photographer and many more from a varied range of fields and interests from all over the world, including New Zealand's very own Gin Wig more.
The speakers were recorded on 15 January and the tapes promptly flown back to Christchurch for editing before the broadcast went global. The broadcast took place on 22 January at three separate intervals so that people all over the world could interact with and view it in real time. It is estimated that the broadcast engaged more than six million people around the globe. Discussions were continued a week after the initial broadcast, with TEDx Scott Base Ambassadors facilitating conversations between the viewing community and the team of speakers at Scott Base. The documents that shaped a nation will be celebrated in a new national exhibition and upcoming stamp issue. A Declaration -1835 He Whakaputanga 0 te Rangatiratanga oNO TIreni Declaration of Independence of the United Tribes of New Zealand A Treaty - 1840 Te Tiriti
0
Waitangi Treaty of Waitangi
A Petition - 1893 Women's Suffrage Petition Te Petihana Whakamana P6ti Wahine
These documents have helped to shape New Zealand's past, continue to shape our present and will have a lasting effect on our future, As relevant today as the day they were first signed, they influence the way Kiwis live together, work together and accomplish together, To honour what they stand for and to allow greater access for the public, a new permanent exhibition has been built in the National Library of New Zealand in Wellington, and will be open to the public from 20 May 2017, The exhibition is called He Tohu, which can have many meanings, But in this context it means simply 'the signs' and refers to the signatures on the documents and to those who signed them, Each person who signed one of these documents added to it their mana, their essence, He Tohu has three main objectives: to preserve these fragile documents for future generations; to improve access for all New Zealand's citizens and its visitors; and to enhance learning opportunities for young New Zealanders about the history and ongoing significance to our national story of these three documents, The exhibition was developed in partnership between the Crown and Maori,
The He Tohu exhibition has two distinct parts: the document room; and a surrounding interactive exhibition, The document room is central in layout and meaning, as it is holding some of the nation's most treasured items, It has been inspired by a Maori waka huia ltreasure box]. Made 6
with native wood, this room will preserve these treasures in state-of-the-art, environmentally controlled display cases. The space surrounding the document room will tell the story of each document, It is colourful and lively, and designed with young people in mind. It will allow young people to explore how these documents will affect our nation's future and in turn, each of them, He Tohu will have an online presence that will provide a wealth of learning material to support the exhibition and for those who cannot visit in person or who want to know more about our founding documents, ~
The He Tohu logo's cursive hand-written style links back to the signatures that influenced the name itself, Each colour chosen for the background represents one of the documents, Pacific blue is for the Declaration of Independence of the United Tribes of New Zealand; the blue represents the ocean, especially in the north of New Zealand where the document was signed. Ochre is for the Treaty of Waitangi, and is associated with Maori as tradition says the first woman was formed from the red earth. Also, kaka wing feathers are a similar vivid orange and are associated with chiefly status. Purple is used to represent the women's suffrage petition, as purple was the official colour of the movement. A set of stamps and a first day cover celebrating the exhibition will be available from 17 May. The issue consists of three stamps - one for each of the documents. Each stamp features a historic and a modern figure, reflecting the relevance of the documents both at the time they were signed and today. The colours and style of the stamps echo the He Tohu exhibition. Keep an eye on nzpost.co.nz/stamps to find out more. nzpost.co,nz/stamps

Celebrate with an international numismatic conference and a collectable coin from New Zealand Post.
The changeover to decimal currency was a long time coming. with the concept first suggested in the early 1900s. In 19~3 it was considered by the Currency Committee but was decided against due to cost. The idea began to gain traction in the 1950s, and by 1960 the Labour and National Parties both supported the changeover. On 10 July 1967, the imperial currency system was changed to decimal currency and New Zealand welcomed its new 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 cent coins.
Auckland artist Roger Barnes. It will be available exclusively to those attending the conference. It features two icons the dormant volcanic island of Rangitoto that dominates the Hauraki Gulf, and the one shilling and 10 cent coin, which features the Maori carved head or k6ruru design. There will be 40 available in bronze and silver finishes and 20 in sterling silver.
James Berry won the honour of having his designs on New Zealand's new currency. This London-born, New Zealand-based artist had been producing designs for New Zealand stamps and coins for well over 25 years. In 1964 a competition was held to find the designs for New Zealand's new decimal coin and Berry's artworks were ultimately chosen.

Rate changes New Zealand Post has worked hard to keep postage rates and service costs as low as possible. Network costs have reduced as operational changes have been implemented in the past few years. However. with an annual decline in mail volumes we have reviewed the costs of our products and services. and from 1 July 2017 FastPost postage will increase from $1.80 to $2.30 for medium letters, from $2.80 to $3.30 for large letters and from $3.80 to $4.30 for oversize letters. To correspond with these changes. New Zealand Post will be issuing two new Scenic Definitive stamps for the $2.30 and $4.30 denominations. There is already an existing Scenic Definitive for the $3.30 denomination.

....,
It seems that history really does repeat itself when it comes to New Zealand Post finding space to house its various departments and employees. the foundations was well underway. The initial excavation was estimated to be around six metres below ground level with the 76-centimetre-diameter foundation piles being driven in to eight metres. By the time this progress report was published, only 4.5 per cent of what was stated to be "one of the greatest building projects ever attempted in New Zealand" was completed. It was estimated that this building would house around 1,630 staff, including 330 postal staff, and have up to 27 vehicle docks for the large amounts of mail that would need shifting.
The quake-resistant englneenng can be seen In this photo of the initial stages of the constructIOn of Post House.
Recent accommodation issues have been caused by the 2016 Kaik5ura earthquake, but more than 50 years ago in 1964 there were similar issues for New Zealand Post employees, mainly due to the fact that Post House as we know it today had yet to be built. New Zealand Post's resident historian, Andrew McNiven, recently took a look back at a couple of articles discussing the plans for and building of Post House on Waterloo Quay. Shortages in the main Post Office building at the time caused employees to be scattered across more than a dozen separate buildings. The complications, as well as the disorganisation amongst departments and the cost of renting each space, meant the Property Division needed to come up with a solution. That solution was the proposal of an 85-metre-long building with the first five floors 41 metres wide and the upper eight floors 18 metres wide. Standing at 85 metres, it was never going to be the tallest building in New Zealand, but at the time it was one of the largest office spaces to be constructed in the country.
New Zealand Post House has now sat proudly at 7 Waterloo Quay for many years. In 2009 a facelift began on the interior to bring more life and colour into the building. The result was a more open and friendly working space, accessible meeting rooms on the ground floor and a cafe set-up that is perfect for informal meetings or and team catch-ups. The team at Jasmax successfully broke down the barriers and hierarchy with their creation of flexible and engaging workspaces, which were completed in 2015. During this facelift, in 2013, the building was sold to Argosy Property and has remained in its ownership since. Although the 2016 earthquake did cause some superficial damage, the procedures followed and the techniques used during the building's early construction meant that Post House emerged relatively unscathed. Even with limited access, new ways of working allowed employees to continue with their day-to-day work from any location. Advances in technology such as email, file sharing and digital notice boards allowed much more flexibility and meant that the Post House workforce, as well as the building, were much more resilient to earthquakes than they once would have been. Despite the occasional shake, the periodic facelifts and an ever-changing workforce, Post House continues to be the main hub for New Zealand Post services.
However, with great size come great construction issues. Building on land reclaimed from Wellington Harbour meant that all sorts of regulations and requirements had to be met, and there was the added complication of earthquake risks. To tackle the seismic challenges, the developers looked to the Japanese for their tried and tested techniques. The Japanese method of using steel to reinforce concrete columns and beams was incorporated into the building's structural design. To ensure that the right amount of strength was achieved, top-of-the-line technology was brought on board and computers at the Earthquake Research Institute of the University of Tokyo were used to calculate the quake resistance that would be needed. A progress report from 1967 stated that the groundwork for

2016 Tokelau Kilihimahi The traditional nativity story is the reason for celebrating Christmas in Tokelau. Most Tokelauan families spend the day attending church services and sharing food and gifts with loved ones. This whimsical stamp issue celebrates key elements of the nativity story and is sure to please any Christmas stamp collector. Each stamp depicts a different part of the story, from the shepherd watching his flock to Mary and Joseph taking shelter in a stable. The three wise men and the angel are also shown in this delightful stamp issue. Date of issue: 7 December 2016
Birds of Tokelau Meet some of the residents of Tokelau in this Birds of Tokelau stamp issue. There are approximately 20 species of bird living on Tokelau's three atolls. Four of these native species - the tiafee, lakia, katafa gogo and fuakoo, are featured in this issue. In the past few years, measures have been taken to ensure that Tokelau's native birds are able to thrive. With these measures in place, at least six species of seabird have recovered in Tokelau in the past few decades. Date of issue: 1 March 2017
