ThE STORIES BEhIND ThE ICONS “Pioneers, inventors and innovators whose names are now etched in musical history...”
There are certain instruments which have started musical revolutions and defined the way music sounds. Over the years they have not only become industry standard but have achieved iconic status through the impact they have made on music. When the electric guitar and amplification entered the musical landscape, it was a game changer, bringing a paradigm shift in how music sounded. Likewise the synthesizer arrived on the scene and brought the sound of the future and further revolution. Guitars like the Telecaster, Stratocaster, Les Paul, for example have become musical instrument icons and are a household name amongst musicians. However, each of these musical instrument icons has a story behind them. Stories of pioneers, inventors and innovators whose names are now etched in musical history and on the instruments they made. This article and the centrefold section explore some of the stories of these icons and their instruments.
CLARENCE LEONIDAS “LEO” FENDER (August 10, 1909 – March 21, 1991) Leo was an American inventor who founded Fender Electric Instrument Manufacturing. He left the company in the late 1960s. He went on to found two other musical instrument companies, Music Man and G&L Musical Instruments. The guitars, bass guitars, and amplifiers he designed are some of the most influential instruments made in the last 100 years. The Fender Telecaster (1950) was the first mass-produced electric guitar. The Fender Stratocaster (1954) is one of the world’s most iconic electric guitars. The Fender Precision Bass (1951) was the standard for electric bass guitars. The Fender Bassman amplifier became the basis for the amplifiers that later dominated rock and roll. Leo Fender was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992.

THE STORIES BEHIND THE ICONS
ORVILLE h. GIBSON (August 21, 1856 – August 21, 1918)
LESTER WILLIAm POLSFuSS “LES PAuL” (June 9, 1915 – August 13, 2009) Orville Gibson founded the Gibson company in 1902 calling it “The Gibson Mandolin-Guitar Mfg. Co., Ltd.” Based in Kalamazoo Michigan, they made mandolin-styled instruments. Gibson invented archtop guitars, using similar methods used on arch top violins, by developing a unique carved arch top design in their construction. By the 1930s, the company was making flattop acoustic guitars, they also made the first commercially available hollowbody electric guitars. The Gibson Les Paul was the result of the design collaboration between Gibson Guitar Corporation and the jazz guitarist, electronics inventor, Les Paul. In 1950 came the introduction of the radically innovative Fender Telecaster, so solid-body electric guitars were in great demand. Since hollow-body electric guitars have more acoustic resonance, they are prone to amplifier feedback and have less natural note duration. In reaction, Gibson Guitar president Ted McCarty brought in Les Paul as a consultant. Les Paul was an innovator who had been experimenting with guitar design for years. The result of this collaboration was an instrument that would help shape how rock music sounded.

Jim Marsall - The Father of Loud
JAmES ChARLES “JIm” mARShALL OBE
FRIEDRICh GRETSCh
(29 July 1923 – 5 April 2012)
(1856 - 1895)
Jim was an English businessman and pioneer of guitar amplification, known as “The Father of Loud”. The creations from Marshall Amplification are used by some of the biggest names in rock, producing amplifiers with iconic status.
The Gretsch Company was founded in 1883 by Friedrich Gretsch, a twenty-sevenyear-old German but recent US immigrant. Friedrich Gretsch manufactured banjos, tambourines and drums until his death in 1895. Fred, his son, moved operations to Brooklyn, New York in 1916. Gretsch then became one of the most prominent manufacturers of American musical instruments.
From 1960, Marshall owned a music store in Hanwell, West London. Jim was a drummer and sold drums, he then branched out into guitars. His guitar playing customers, including Ritchie Blackmore and Pete Townshend, spoke of the need for a new kind of amplifier, with Townshend wanting something “bigger and louder”. Marshall saw the opportunity, so recruited an 18-year-old electronics apprentice, Dudley Craven, who was previously working for EMI. With Dudley’s help, he began producing prototype amplifiers, resulting in the foundation of Marshall Amplification, in 1962. It took Marshall six attempts to create an amp he was happy with, creating what later became known as “the Marshall sound” that revolutionised music. As the company grew, Marshall expanded his products, and unveiled the Master Volume Marshall amps and the classic JCM800 split channel amps. Soon after he started production, musicians including Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page were using his equipment.
Guitar production began in the late 1930s and Gretsch guitars became highly sought after, especially in the 1950s and 1960s. During the 1950s and 1960s, many renowned Jazz drummers, such as Elvin Jones, Tony Williams, Art Blakey, Philly Joe Jones, Max Roach, and Billy Cobham played Gretsch drums. They were all bearing the now classic “round badge” kits.

THE STORIES BEHIND THE ICONS
AVEDIS ZILDJIAN III (1889 - 1979) The Avedis Zildjian Company is a cymbal manufacturer founded in Istanbul by Armenian Avedis Zildjian in the 17th century, during the Ottoman Empire. At 390 years old, Zildjian is one of the oldest companies in the world. The first Zildjian cymbals were created in 1618 by Avedis Zildjian, an alchemist who was looking for a way to turn base metal into gold. He created an alloy combining tin, copper, and silver into a sheet of metal that could make musical sounds without shattering. Avedis was given the name of Zildjian (Zilciyân) by the Sultan Osman II (from the Turkish word zil – cymbal, dji – maker-seller, ian – commonly used in Armenian last names which means ‘son of’). He began production in 1623 and the details of the process remained secret for generations. It became family tradition that only the company’s heirs would know the manufacturing process. Avedis III along with his brothers Puzant and Aram Zildjian began manufacturing cymbals in Quincy, Massachusetts, USA around 1928. The Avedis Zildjian Co. was formed in 1929. Avedis made many innovations in cymbals that are still around today; he was the first to develop drum-set cymbals and gave cymbals names such as Ride, Crash, Splash, and Hi-Hat. Jazz drummers such as Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, Louie Bellson, Shelly Manne, Cozy Cole and Papa Jo Jones all used Avedis Zildjian cymbals.
WILLIAm F. LuDWIG (July 15, 1879 - July 8,1973) The first product made by brothers William and Theobaldne Ludwig was a bass drum pedal which could play faster beats than the typical of products of the time. It was produced in a rented barn on the south side of Chicago. The Ludwig brothers next developed the hydraulic action timpani. In 1916 they invented a spring mechanism, which is the basis for the current Balanced Action Pedal Timpani. Production then expanded into other types of drums and banjo-type instruments, especially brass snare drums and wood shell drums.
6
Avedis Zildjian During the depression of the 1930s, the company was forced to merge with the C.G. Conn Company. William F. Ludwig, disliked his lack of involvement in the design and manufacture of the instruments after the merger, left the company in 1936. He opened his own company, the W.F.L. Drum Company, in 1937. The first product of W.F.L. was the Speed King pedal, which is still currently being manufactured by Ludwig. In 1955, the Ludwig division was purchased back from Conn and renamed the Ludwig Drum Company. Ludwig has introduced a stream of innovations in drum construction, particularly in the use of materials and finishes. The Black Beauty snare drum, a hand-engraved black nickelplated brass shell drum was manufactured by Ludwig during the 1920s, is highly prized by collectors and players alike. The Ludwig Supraphonic snare drum is considered to be an industry standard for professional snares. Originally made of chrome-plated brass, it was later made of a chrome-plated aluminum alloy. Then Ringo Starr played Ludwig in The Beatles and what ensued firmly entrenched Ludwig’s iconic status in music even further.

THE STORIES BEHIND THE ICONS
EVERETTE huLL (January 17, 1904 - December 12, 1981) Everette Hull, a pianist and bass player, formed a partnership with Stanley Michaels under the name “Michaels-Hull Electronic Labs.” in 1946. They aimed to produce a new microphone pickup which Hull had designed. The pickup was fitted on the end of an upright bass and was dubbed the Amplified Peg or “Ampeg” for short. Hull assumed control of the company in 1949 and changed its name to the Ampeg Bassamp Company. Since then Ampeg has produced some of the music industry’s most innovative and memorable products. Many of these products have very unique features and performance capabilities resulting in six U.S. patents under the Ampeg brand name. Jess Oliver, a design engineer at Ampeg, created a combo amplifier nicknamed the “Portaflex,” in 1960. This amplifier became the standard in bass combos throughout the 60s and 70s. Also in the early 60s, Ampeg was the first company to incorporate reverb in an amplifier.
In 1969, Ampeg set out to design the most powerful amplifier ever made. At that time, 50-watt amps were considered more than adequate. 100-watt amps were considered “plenty loud.” Ampeg, harnessed 300 watts of pure tube power by creating new valve (tube) technology - Super Valve Technology, or the SVT. Now the most sought after stage amplifier, the SVT has proven its road worthiness on stages around the world. It is now firmly established in the iconic realms of bass amplification.
ROBERT ALBERT “BOB” mOOG (May 23, 1934 – August 21, 2005) Bob Moog was an American pioneer of electronic music and founder of Moog Music, best known as the inventor of the Moog synthesizer. Moog’s innovative electronic design is employed in numerous synthesizers including the Minimoog Model D, Minimoog Voyager, Little Phatty, Moog Taurus Bass Pedals, Moog Minitaur, and the Moogerfooger line of effects pedals. Moog attended the Bronx High School of Science in New York, graduating in 1952. Moog earned a bachelor’s degree in physics from Queens College, New York in 1957, another in electrical
engineering from Columbia University, and a Ph.D. in engineering physics from Cornell University. The Moog synthesizer was one of the first widely used electronic musical instruments. Early development on the components of the synthesizer occurred at the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center, now the Computer Music Center. While there, Moog developed the voltage controlled oscillators, ADSR envelope generators and other synthesizer modules with composer Herbert Deutsch. Moog created the first voltage-controlled subtractive synthesizer to utilise a keyboard as a controller. In 1966, Moog filed a patent application for his unique low-pass filter. He is listed as inventor on ten US patents. Moog had his theremin company (R. A. Moog Co., which later became Moog Music) manufacture and market his synthesizers. Unlike the few other 1960s synthesizer manufacturers, Moog shipped a piano-style keyboard as the standard user interface. The first Moog instruments were modular synthesizers. In 1970 Moog Music began production of the Minimoog Model D, which was among the first synthesizers that was widely available, portable, and relatively affordable.

TUBEMEISTER 18 REvIEw BY ED LIM - www.sixstringsamurai.co.nz The lunchbox amp revolution has changed the way we think about amps – starting with the orange Tiny Terror series, it’s brought us heads like the Mesa Boogie Mini Rectifier and Transatlantic, which punch well above their weight, going head to head with much more high powered and expensive amps. Now there’s a new player in town… brought to you by a certain Mr. Hughes and Herr Kettner.
12
When you flip the on switch on the Tubemeister 18, you’ll either instantly love it or hate it. No, not the tone – I’m talking about the thrumming neon blue that fills the internals and spills out via the transparent front panel. You might think it looks like a cool spaceship (like me), or you might think that it looks like an overclocked gaming computer… or you might think that overclocked gaming computers look awesome, I don’t know.
The cool thing about the Tubemeister is that its tones aren’t based on a particular amp. Rather, each channel has certain characteristics reminiscent of some classic amps, but by and large it has its own distinctive tone which you can use as the basis for creating sounds that are yours and no one else’s.
What I do know is that whether you like the aesthetics or not, that shouldn’t hinder you from trying out this little 18W pocket rocket. Packed with features like integrated power soak, silent record mode, lead boost and more, this is an amp designed with YoU in mind, whether you’re a bedroom shredder, late night recording fiend or loud, proud gigging musician – or all of the above!
The Clean channel serves up tones that are crisp and full, neither too bright nor too warm, with plenty of headroom available. This is where the cool features start to come in. Do you prefer your slightly overdriven tones to come from poweramp drive, but when you actually get your amp loud enough to drive the poweramp, your ears are bleeding and neighbour’s faces are melted? Not a problem
EXPLORING THE MEISTER
here – just reach around the back panel and click power soak down to 5W or even 1W, and you’re free to dime the channel master volume to get those sweet break-up tones at a manageable level. experimenting with this balance can take the Clean channel from pristine cleans, to bluesy drive, and all the way to AC/DC territory.
POWER STANCE TIME! Click over to the Lead channel (easily accessible using a standard TRS footswitch or via touch buttons on the front panel) and you’ll be greeted by a crunchy roar that recalls many a hot-rodded Marshall. Go on, dig out your spandex pants and play some glam rock – we won’t tell. Need more gain for chunkier riffing and soaring solos? The Tubemeister has just the right secret weapon – time to Boost it! engaging the Boost control does wonderful things to your tone if you’re a high gain maniac like me – not only does it increase the volume of the Lead channel, but it also juices up the overall gain levels, taking you out of the 80s and into more modern eras. And it doesn’t stop there! Turning on the boost also re-voices the channel to make it thicker and juicier, ensuring that your face melting quotas for the night will be met with ease. As with the Clean channel, if you prefer your overdrive sound to be dominated by poweramp drive rather than preamp drive, you can use the integrated power soak

HUGHES & KETTNER - TUBMEISTER 18 HEAD
For TubeMeister, Mr. Hughes and Herr Kettner packed all their know-how and over a quarter of a century‘s passion for tube amps into a remarkably compact chassis. Thanks to German engineering, it can go from a roar to a whisper, shaking the boards on stage, tingling spines in the studio, and raising goose-bumps in the still of night - even during silent recording.
channels: 2 | power: 18 Watts | Footswitch/stageboard: FS-2 optional | Protective Cover Softbag included | Dimensions: 356 x 156 x 150 mm | weight: 5 kg
to notch down the output so that you can crank the channel master volume without permanent damage to your ears. Get the looser, harmonically rich sound of poweramp drive with its distinctive sag without killing every small animal within a 1km radius of your amp.
HUGHES & KETTNER - TUBEMEISTER 36 HEAD Independent gain and master knobs and a switchable FX Loop are standard appointments on modern triple channel amps. But that’s not nearly enough for a real TubeMeister. So Mr. Hughes and Herr Kettner built in a MIDI system to access the channels, FX loop and onboard reverb. It can even select the power stages of the integrated power soak!
RED BOX If going down to 1W with the power soak isn’t good enough for you (just no pleasing some people!), there’s oNe more cool trick in the box. The Red Box, that is. Red Box is H&K’s emulated out for recording or feeding straight to a PA. When you’re using this, you can activate a silent recording mode, which allows you to feed your signal straight to a desk for those late night recording sessions. Pretty cool! H&K even suggest that you can feed this signal to in-ear monitors onstage and not worry about a cab or mic. Now that’s an interesting idea.
FINAL THOUGHTS I think H&K had finally hit a home run with this one. A great feature set, versatility for Africa, and here’s the best part – it’s priced at an extremely reasonable $1099! Small enough to chuck in a backpack, but big enough to rock out. It’s just a great idea for almost any guitarist. However, if that’s still not enough, check out Big Brother! The Tubemeister 36.
The Tubemeister 36 brings an increased feature set and versatility to the lunchbox amp market that hasn’t been seen before. It boasts 3 channels – Clean, Crunch and Lead, with a dedicated 3-band eQ for the Clean channel, and shared eQ for the Crunch and Lead channels. This time around each individual channel has an integrated power soak, allowing you to set the channel of your choice to 36, 18, 5 and even 1W output. Red Box silent recording mode makes a welcome return. Chuck in footswitchable
reverb and MIDI control capabilities and you might just have the ultimate lunchbox-style amp. Well, it’s a bit bigger than the 18, so maybe it’s more of a dinner box, if there is such a thing. Thanks for reading! If it sounds like something for you, make sure you go and check out the Hughes and Kettner Tubemeister series at a Rockshop near you today, or alternatively have a listen to our tone clips at www.sixstringsamurai.co.nz

GEAR FEATURE ARTIST
LARRY GRAHAM SLY & THE FAMILY STONE GRAHAM CENTRAL STATION
Larry Graham, Jr. is an American baritone singer, musician, songwriter and record producer. He is best known as the bass guitar player in the popular and influential psychedelic soul/funk band Sly & the Family Stone. Larry pioneered the art of ‘slap-pop’ playing on the electric bass guitar. This technique radically expanded the tonal pallete of the bass, which he calls thumpin’ and pluckin’. As with many innovations this was drawn out of necessity during a period of time when his mother’s band didn’t have a drummer and Larry was on bass. The slap which provides a thump sound that was emulating the bass drum and the pop, the snare drum. This technique provided the necessary percussive elements in addition to the bass notes that were required from the bass guitar. This style has since become the standard of modern funk bass playing. The ‘slap’ bass style has become synonymous with artists such as Bootsy Collins (James Brown, Parliament), Les Claypool (Primus), Flea (Red Hot Chilli Peppers), Stanley Clarke, Pino Palladino, Marcus Miller, Louis Johnson, Mark King, Jonas Hellborg and Victor Wooten. In 1968 Larry joined Sly and the Family Stone. Their first album “A Whole New Thing” provided a way for people to hear Larry’s unique bass playing. Their next album had a number of hit singles such as “dance to the Music” and “everybody Is a Star,” both
of which allowed his voice as well as his thumping & plucking bass style to be heard around the globe.
LARRY GRAHAM’S GEAR Streamer LX Bass
In 1972 Larry left Sly and the Family Stone and formed his own band, Graham Central Station. The name is a pun on Grand Central Station, the train station located in the Manhattan borough of New York City. Graham Central Station had several hits in the 1970s, including ‘Hair’, ‘Pow’ and ‘It’s the engine in Me’. In 1993 Larry was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Sly and the Family Stone.
“My sound actually has a lot to do with the way I play and how I attack the strings.”
Warwick WA600
“I have my bass going into my Warwick WA 600 amps. If I hit the bass lightly I get one kind of response, but if I hit it hard you have another, so the attack has a lot to do with it.” 2012 marked the release of ‘Raise Up’, his first album in 13 years, which features cameos by Raphael Saadiq and Prince who assists on several instruments and background vocals. “Three of the cuts feature Prince,” says Graham. “We also did a remake of ‘Higher Ground’, which is by another good friend of mine, Mr Stevie Wonder.”
Warwick WCA 115
Having shared the stage with Larry for his recent UK dates at London’s Jazz Café, Mark King of British Jazz/Funk band, Level 42 had this to say of Graham’s signature tone. “Larry’s got a WCA 410 cabinet and a WCA 115 and it’s got so much bottom end, it’s such a big sound”.

ElEctronic Drum tunEr
ElEctronic Bar triggEr PaD
every guitar player has an electronic tuner for speed and accuracy in tuning. Tuning a drum is much more time consuming and difficult than a guitar. After years of research and development, overtone Labs has finally created a fast, accurate, and effective drum tuner. This new invention is about to change the way you tune your drums, and more importantly, change the way your drums sound.
The compact and affordable BT-1 Bar Trigger Pad makes it easy to add electronic triggering to any drum kit. With a curved shape that mounts on the side of a V-drums V-Pad or acoustic drum, it provides convenient playing access without disturbing your existing kit layout. The BT-1 is great not only for playing sounds in a V-drums module or SPd-series percussion pad, but also for convenient control of a variety of functions like start/stop of backing songs and phrase loops, and much more.

QUESTLOVE THE RooTS, lATE NiGHT WiTH jiMMy FAlloN
Ahmir Khalib Thompson (born on January 20, 1971), known professionally as ?uestlove or Questlove is an American drummer, dJ, music journalist and record producer. He is best known as the drummer and joint frontman for the Grammy Award-winning band The Roots, who are now the in-house band for Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, a hugely successful talk show in America. Questlove has produced for artists such as Common, d’Angelo, Jill Scott, erykah Badu, Bilal, Jay-Z, Nikka Costa, Amy Winehouse and more recently, Al Green and John Legend.
Questlove has been described as “a living link between the digital science of modern hip-hop and the flesh-and-blood textures of vintage R&B”
and musicianship to previously undiscovered places. In a largely electronic based genre, Questlove’s influence has been game changing, making him one of today’s most inventive and recognisable players. His collaborations with other artists have shown the importance of real-time playing in a style dominated by sampling and programming.

His father was the leader of the ‘50s doowop group Lee Andrews and the Hearts, so Questlove grew up onstage. Playing the ‘oldies circuit’ with groups like The Coasters, The drifters, The Chiffons. He was playing percussion at gigs from the age of seven and by 13 was the musical director. He continued playing with these acts until he got a record deal with The Roots at age 22.

Questlove is continually innovative in his drum kit set-up and use of gear. Whether it’s playing with tambourines on cymbals; the unique snare drum tuning in his usual two snare set up; playing with no crash cymbals and often no rack tom, Questlove has found his own unique voice operating outside the conventional drum kit mindset.

Teaming up with Ludwig Drums in 2012 lead to a unique collaboration called The Breakbeats kit. Due for a New Zealand release later this year, it promises to be a real game changer for innovative players.

ENDURING PASSION FOR MUSIC
ENDURiNG PASSioN FoR MUSic THE SToRy oF MicK WEBB AND THE RocKSHoP When The Beatles played the english television show ‘Thank Your Lucky Stars’ in october 1962, it would have been impossible to predict the impact they would have on those who saw it. obviously The Beatles played a very influential part in the musical and cultural revolution of the 1960s. However, that iconic performance, on a black and white TV, was the inspiration for Mick Webb’s musical journey. Mick is best known for creating the Rockshop, the largest chain of wholly-owned musical instrument retail stores in New Zealand. It has been this enduring passion for music that has not only created a successful group of companies but also allowed many others to live out their musical passions through their careers. A Christmas present of a 3⁄4 size nylon string guitar from his sister was Mick’s first musical instrument. He was listening to ‘skiffle’ music at the time. It was a rough, raw, immediate music compared to the mainstream alternatives. Mick wanted to be involved in music in some shape or form. This lead to joining a school band called ‘The Section’, which eventually lead to the first band which Mick managed called ‘Slowbone’. “I felt my skills weren’t just in playing music but in management, organising, taking opportunities and making things work.
I really enjoyed going out and finding gigs for the band and dealing with record companies.” Mick signed Slowbone to a deal with the ‘Rare Earth’ record label in the UK. His musical journey continued in the formation of a t-shirt printing company. Starting with printing shirts for Slowbone, it lead to printing shirts for numerous other bands and even for customers like Richard Branson’s Virgin Records. eventually he sold this company and opened a guitar store.
“I have a love for creating and my chosen field is music. Some people write, produce, play, manage, promote or open a store but it’s all to do with music”. Mick then opened a store called Holiday Music in Walthamstow, east London. He split from that and opened the Cambridge Rockshop, then opening a shop in Germany, Islington and another in Cambridge. Mick left england in 1986 to live in New Zealand. He met Paul Skipper, who was working as a town planner. Paul played keyboards and was
gigging with his bands regularly around the Auckland region. They formed a partnership, taking over a rundown music store on Karangahape Road, Auckland. over the next 25 years this partnership has developed into a group of companies representing 30 musical instrument retail stores, 4 wholesale companies, a magazine, a private music venue called Backbeat and Rockshop Radio. “It’s all been very organic, a natural progression the way it’s all developed. I’ve been very fortunate with the people that I’ve had around me. Business is all about people. Trusting, enjoying and living your life with other people. Without other people life is nothing, that’s where we get enjoyment from, interaction and relationship.” Mick emphasises that “the organisation is not about me, it’s about everyone in it. People enjoying what they do. We can’t all be successful rock ’n’ rollers. Some people have their five minutes of fame and then find they still have to pay the bills, particularly in New Zealand. So it’s good to be part of creating something where musicians can earn a living by indulging in their passion in one way, shape or form.” “It’s been great to have buy-in from other people who have similar aspirations or love for music”. Mick believes the Rockshop is distinguished by its employees. All of its directors, senior staff, product managers, marketing & design, technical service division, IT team and even the group CFo are active or gigging musicians, who bring a real musical connection to the company. This goes much further with numerous store managers, retail & wholesale staff all regularly playing, bringing their expertise and their musical passion to what they do. This real musical connection is woven into the fundamental structure of the organisation from the top down and provides credibility for both customers and staff.
“If you indulge in your passion it’s
Rockshop directors from left to right: Torey Leggett, Brett Wells, Mick Webb, Paul Skipper, (Wayne McIntyre - not pictured)
not a minute of work. Looking at the clock wishing your life away, well there’s not much point in that. I couldn’t have achieved the personal well being and the fun if I wasn’t involved in music”.

Moog Sub PHATTY REVIEW BY DICK 'MAGIK' JOHNSON From late 80’ Manchester clubs heaving to the sounds of The Happy Mondays, New Order and The Smiths, to the peaceful Auckland suburbs chirping with the sounds of native New Zealand birds, DJ/Producer Dick ‘Magik’ Johnson’s life has been a journey in sound. Since making the move from England to New Zealand in the early 2000s, Magik has made himself at home down under, although his heavy production output means DJs around the world are never short of a piece of Magik to throw in their sets.
The one I’m most excited to try out is the sub oscillator which will produce a square wave an octave below the first oscillator and means you can retain the fullness of the sound whilst simultaneously ripping it apart in bass end. There’s also a noise generator with a wide
There is however some use of a shift mode to access all the unit’s functions, which makes it possible to add more detailed changes including adding a delay, adjusting the pitch bend range or the filter slope and lots of other stuff that would mean reading the manual, which I really should do more often. After 10 minutes on the Sub Phatty I was sold. It has that unique moog sound with the ability to create some monstrous bass and lead sounds and without any of the cheap digital noise you get from some synths and virtual synths. It’s also really stable when you start messing things up with the LFO and pitch. Jack was getting impatient so I let him take over, it was gold watching his face light up! He couldn’t get over the clarity of the sounds and how they still sound great and don’t break up once you start to manipulate the sounds as digital synths often do. We couldn’t wait to get it back to the studio.
“ Sub PHATTY
I’ve wanted to buy a new moog Keyboard for some time but didn’t really want to spend Voyager money to get it. I saw the Sub Phatty was due out and couldn’t wait to give it a go. I was never that impressed with the Little Phatty- it just felt like a poor man’s Voyager and a bit dull, so I was really hoping the Sub Phatty would have more balls. I took my friend Jack with me who I’ve been mentoring and working with. He’s 15 and been making ‘digital’ electronic music on his laptop since he was 12. He’s a genius at programming virtual synths and plug-ins but has never heard or played on any analogue hardware before. I really wanted to see how he’d react to the sound and modulation of a moog.
THE GRITTIEST MOOG SYNTH EVER.
range in frequency, great for those big dirty break downs. There are 4 banks of 4 patch presets which are a good starting point but not much more.
The Sub Phatty is such a well priced synth and a small price to pay to add some Analogue warmth to our digital world.
“
I’ve owned and sold several moog oog Synthesizers over the last 10 years: first was a Prodigy then a Voyager, a Little Phatty and the only one that remains is a minitaur. initaur. I’ve either got bored of them or more likely needed the cash, which was sadly the case with the Voyager. However, I love the minitaur and its simplicity- it’s my trusty bass machine and never fails.
I had the first go! I really like the 2 octave keyboard, it’s compact and perfect for someone with my keyboard skills. The Sub Phatty has a very classic, clean looking interface with a simple layout, it also feels solid and built to last. It has two oscillators with continuous selection between triangle, saw tooth, square and pulse wave forms, with a switch to determine the octave. The second oscillator also allows you to tune separately from the first oscillator plus or minus a fifth, which basically means you can create those awesome detuned techno bass and lead sounds. Yesss!
Keep up to date with gig and realease anouncements by following Dick on Facebook www.facebook/DJMagikJohnson and on SoundCloud https://soundcloud.com/magikj
The Sub Phatty straight away sounds crystal clear with the warmth that you’d expect to hear from an analogue synth. With a few turns of the the oscillators and filter I’m quickly into screaming leads and some killer mr Oizo-esque wobbly bass. It’s great how much space there is between knobs so you’re less likely to make a mistake if you have sausage fingers like me. It’s also great that every knob controls a single practical parameter rather than some space saving synths where you have to worry about shift buttons to get where you want to.

GEAR FEATURE ARTICLE
DigiTAl DiviDenD BY JAMES WALDRON James Waldron is the product manager for Sennheiser Professional products at Syntec in Australia and New Zealand. He talks here about Digital Dividend and why it matters to wireless microphone users. We all know that Wireless microphones and In ear monitor (Iem) systems use radio waves to transmit the sound wirelessly. You probably also realise that there is a range of frequencies licenced by the New Zealand Government for us to use these systems, so that we don’t cause interference to other users of this wireless spectrum. The range of frequencies licenced in New Zealand for use
by wireless microphones and Iem systems is split into a couple of bands: 518 mHz to 582 mHz and 614 mHz to 806 mHz. This spectrum is also licenced for the transmission of Freeview TV across New Zealand. Because analogue TV transmission technology requires that transmitters don’t operate on adjacent channels there has been plenty of space for us to work happily in the gaps between the TV transmitters. There are significant changes coming for this arrangement and they are coming soon. If you operate wireless audio systems it’s a good idea to learn about what is happening so you can plan what to do when the changes happen. The use of smartphones and tablets and other mobile devices which use wireless data technology is growing very quickly. All this data uses radio frequencies and as more mobile data is used, more frequencies get used. The growth in mobile data traffic means that new frequencies need to be found to accommodate it. The frequencies used for wireless audio systems and for TV transmission are ideal for this application too.
One of the benefits of Digital TV technology is that TV channel frequencies can be allocated closer to each other than with analogue technology. This means that overall the Digital TV transmitters don’t need as much frequency spectrum as the analogue TV transmitters need. By switching over to Digital TV transmission, a significant part of the frequency spectrum can be cleared and used for mobile data services. In broad terms, the frequencies above 698 mHz will be cleared of these services and we (and the TV transmitters) will have to operate between 518 mHz at the low end (same as now) and 698 mHz at the top end. This is not just happening in New Zealand. It has already happened across North America and europe and is rolling out now across Asia and Australia. The switchover to Digital TV transmission is well underway across New Zealand and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2013. The analogue TV stations are being switched off progressively across
Are your wireless mics READY for the
Digital Dividend ?
OURS ARE ! By the end of 2013, all analogue TV transmitters will be turned off and all digital TV transmitters will have changed frequency. The band between 694 MHz and 820 MHz will be cleared of all users so it can be used for mobile data services. Check your wireless microphone systems now ! If they operate between 694 MHz and 820 MHz you need to start planning to operate between 520 MHz and 694 MHz before the end of 2013.
Make certain your systems are ready! visit

GEAR FEATURE ARTICLE the country during this year. You can see a map with timing information at this link: http://goingdigital.co.nz/making-the-switch/ coverage-areas-2/coverage-areas.html. The New Zealand Government has announced that it plans to hold an auction in October 2013 so the Telcos can bid for licences to use the frequencies between 698 mHz and 820 mHz. These licences will give their owners the rights to use that spectrum beginning 1 January 2014 and valid until late in 2031. The Government will need to make sure that there no other users operating on those frequencies, so you can expect to see regulations prohibiting operation of these systems beginning January 1, 2014. This means you won’t be permitted to operate a wireless audio system above 694 mHz from January 1, 2014. This will leave us the spectrum from 518 mHz to 582 mHz and from 614 mHz up to 686 mHz to share with the Digital TV transmitters, just more than half of what was available previously. The other part of the new landscape is that the Digital TV transmitters are operating on different frequencies from their analogue counterparts. We can expect to find that most of the Digital TV transmitters will be operating below 614 mHz. This means it will be crowded between 518 mHz and 614 mHz in many TV markets and difficult to find frequencies available for your wireless audio systems to use. The plans for Digital TV transmitter frequency allocations show that frequencies above 614 mHz will be largely clear of TV transmission, right across New Zealand. It makes real sense to have your wireless audio systems operating on frequencies between 614 mHz and 694 mHz.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN NEW GEAR From January 1, 2014 your wireless audio systems will have to operate between 518 mHz and 582 mHz, and between 614 mHz
518 mHz
582 mHz
Licenced for Television & Wireless Audio use
and 694 mHz. Use on frequencies above 698 mHz will not be permitted, so if your wireless audio systems operate in this part of the frequency spectrum you will need to replace them. You will find the most clear channels to use are between 614 mHz and 694 mHz. With Sennheiser wireless audio systems this translates to the B Band versions in XSW and evolution G3 Series products, BW Band versions of 2000 Series products and N Band versions for 3000/5000 Series products.
THE SUMMARY The first thing to make sure of is that the new systems operate on the permitted frequencies: 518 mHz to 582 mHz, and 614 mHz to 694 mHz, because these are the permitted frequencies. Your real preference though, should be systems that operate in the upper block, 614 mHz to 694 mHz, because this is where you will find the biggest number of clear frequencies to use across New Zealand. Remember to look for the switching bandwidth of the product. The larger the switching bandwidth the more frequencies you will have available for you to choose from. The Sennheiser range generally has the widest switching bandwidth of any brand at a similar price point.

A TRUe Dual Diversity receiver will give you more reliable reception than other types of diversity receiver, so that is an important feature to look for, too. Sennheiser uses TRUe Dual Diversity technology in all of its wireless microphone systems, from XSW Series right up to the top of the range 3000/5000 Series. These are just a couple of the reasons why Sennheiser is the preferred wireless choice of professionals around the world. You can find more information here:

GEAR FEATURED ARTIST
PHiliPPA FEATURED Nz DJ / PRODUCER
Based in Auckland, Philippa has been a keen music enthusiast from day one. Her mother is a skilled and fanatical music teacher and thus Philippa’s early years were spent participating in all things musical, gaining advanced piano and singing qualifications by the age of 16… a beginning that stood her in good steed for future musical developments. With a Bachelor of Arts in the study of Religion and a Diploma in Audio engineering, Philippa is widely regarded as one of New Zealand’s top stratum DJs. Having begun DJing late ’97 after falling in love with deep house, Philippa’s musical career has been one of hard work mixed with accolades and a steadfast nature that has seen her stand by the music she passionately believes in. In 2010 Philippa was taken on by mAINZ (The music and Audio Institute of New Zealand) alongside Detroit native, electronic music legend Recloose, to co-write and tutor on the DJ and electronic music Production Programme. As a promoter, her flagship events CHICAGO DISCO continue to pack out INK BAR (home to the infamous club nights), the party now eight years deep; CHICAGO DISCO has also taken to the skies every year on national tours, flying to hotspots and clubs of cool kids nation-wide. When it comes to house music in New Zealand – particularly the deeper end of the house music spectrum – Philippa has been at the forefront of the genre, right from the beginning. A new chapter is about to begin – mid 2013 she’s moving to Berlin to get amongst what can only be described as one of the most alive house scenes in the world. We wish her luck! You have been DJing for many years nowhow has your approach changed over the years? As I’ve grown musically I have learnt to follow my heart and taste 100%. This means more musical sets where you are likely to hear me playing cross genre, according to the emotional direction I feel like taking on the night. It’s still essentially going to be house music – but I will play from the nu disco and indie dance influenced end of things right through to deep house and grooving techno. I don’t restrict myself to the confines of a sub-genre anymore:
if I like it – I play it. It can take a few years to stop “shoulding” on yourself and give yourself free rein as an artist I guess... In general I like more adventurous and musical DJ sets. You can hear if a DJ has wide taste in music - it shines through. The opposite is also true. What impact has technology made on you for DJing? It keeps shifting and changing doesn’t it? And this will only continue as the exponential rate of technological development marches ever forward. I learnt to DJ on two Technics SL1200 turntables and used to spend up to $200 a week on highly coveted vinyl! I’m glad I came up as a DJ in that era as it taught all of us from that era a set of invaluable skills… however I’ve recently made the transition to Native Instruments Traktor – and this I know will have a huge impact on my DJing. The functionality of Traktor is just so much more – the lines are being blurred between traditional DJ sets and live performances – it really is an exciting time to be a DJ. What gear do you use for DJing & production? Traktor for DJing and Ableton Live with various plugins for production. I’ve recently purchased Spectrasonics Trillian and am amazed by the sound quality and functionality of the plugin; I also love the SoundToys and Waves plugins. And shout outs need to go out to local guy Goldbaby, whose beat packs have been doing a lot to improve the sound quality of my beat writing… You’re teaching the next generation of up & coming DJs & producers at MAINZ- how do their attitudes towards DJing & Electronic Music Production differ to those who may be already established? A good question which has a variety of complex answers! There’s definitely an open mindedness with young producers in New Zealand presently, at least with the students we have on the DJemP programme at mAINZ. This has changed even in the last few years – things were very dub-step dominated a few years ago, but the current crop of students are more open minded and open to exploring a variety of electronic music sounds. I think this is a good place for us to be in NZ right now - it’s more musical and honest and I think bodes well for the future.
sound in clubland to identify with presently.. Which is partly due to our geographical separation from the rest of the world (which means we’re slightly out of touch), partly due to the commercialisation and corporatisation of clubland (especially in Auckland), and partly because New Zealand seems to largely lack an ‘adult’ end of the market (what we have here in Auckland is cool but small). This is a shame to me – when you visit europe for example clubland is full of adults (post 30) who still love to go out and dance / hear music on a decent sound system. I could go on forever here, but would probably send your readers to sleep so best I stop! Have I gone off topic? I think I may have gone off topic… What has been your favourite gig so far? This is sooo hard to answer. Any number of random nights at Ink Bar (that small, grungy and awesome bastion of underground electronic music on K Road) are hard to beat in terms of fun and the deep satisfaction you get from playing exactly what you want to play to a crowd that “get it”.. A gig I played in Berlin last July when visiting would be up there too.. As would a number of Splore and Rhythm and Vines sets over the years. What’s on the horizon for DJ Philippa? mid July this year I am hopping on a plane and moving to Berlin, Germany! They have one of the most vibrant house / electronic music scenes in the world. House music is massive in europe presently, whereas it’s very small in New Zealand. I’ve also been putting in serious hours in the studios at mAINZ for the last few years and my production is starting to get to a place I’m happy with. To get signed to the labels I want to be part of in europe, I need to be there. Plus I’m really looking forward to checking out the gazillion artists I’ve looked up to for years, as well as the emergent artists, who regularly play the european club circuit. It’s going to be fun to just get amongst for a while… Check out DJ Philippa at her farewell Chicago Disco gig at Auckland’s Ink Bar on Saturday 29th June. You can check out our Phillipa blog details at djphilippa.co.nz
Having said that, we’re in a state of flux where things are shifting and changing constantly and I think to an extent we’re struggling to find a

GEAR FEATURE ARTICLE
DMX ConTRol GETTING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR LIGHTING SETUP DmX is a networking protocol that enables any universal DmX controller to control the features of one or multiple DmX compatible products, whether they be LeD PAR cans, wash lights, moving heads, followspots, foggers, effect lights etc.
DMX DmX-compatible products are connected to the DmX controller using DmX cables in a series connection between the DmX controller and the various DmX compatible products, (also known as a daisy chain). In this type of connection, the DATA OUT of one product or the DmX controller connects to the DATA IN of the next product, and so on. The DmX signal stream is unidirectional from the DmX controller to the DmX compatible products. The stream of DmX signals consists of 512 individual, sequential channels that form a frame. The DmX controller constantly sends frames of DmX signals to the DmX connection, even if not all of the 512 channels are in use. Because of this constant transmission method, there can be only one DmX controller in a DmX connection. If not, the DmX signals sent by one controller would interfere with the signals sent by the other controller(s).
THE DMX FUNCTIONS each DmX channel can have a value in the 000~255 range. each DmX-compatible product uses however many consecutive DmX channels as there are features the user can control. The sequential numbers assigned to each DmX channel (1~512) are also known as DmX addresses. The function each DmX channel has, and the results of assigning a value to each depend on the personality (or DmX channel layout) of each controlled product. Some products only use a single DmX channel (such as a one channel dimmer), while others may require 15 or more DmX channels to control all their functions – i.e a moving light that has movement channels, colour choices, gobos, focus etc.
DMX ADDRESSING The user must carefully assign the starting addresses for each individual product to avoid DmX channel overlapping. Overlapping addresses could cause products could operate erratically. If two or more similar products are configured with the same personality and starting address, they will operate in unison
(this is very useful when you want two lights to do exactly the same thing – just address them the same and you will only have to control one light for them both to work).
BENEFITS OF A DMX CONTROLLER Lets say you have a LeD par light such as a CHAUVeT SlimPar 64. If you have it set on auto or sound active it ‘does its own thing’, which is cool but let’s say you want to have colour changes to suit the mood of a song for example. You could program a couple of colour changes into a DmX controller, and have them change either according to a time you set on the controller, or via mIDI or another type of external trigger. This can be VeRY easily done when you use a PC or mAC based control system such as CHAUVeT showexpress, and really can add to a performance. This is even more important when using moving lights. Why have a cool ‘moving head’ just randomly splashing light and patterns around a venue when you could have it exactly pin-pointing either band members or DJs and really working in with your show with gobos and colours you have chosen – All this is easily done when you take a little time to programme a custom show on a DmX controller.

Just enter the Address Number and your ready to go! Check it out on Chauvet’s website. http://www.chauvetlighting.com/chauvet-dip-switch-calculator/
DMX UNIVERSES A DmX universe is the set of DmX compatible products connected to the same DmX daisy chain using the same set of 512 DmX channels. each set of 512 channels is referred to as a DmX Universe. In most cases, an installation will consist of only one DmX universe – only when more than 512 channels are required would you need to add another DmX universe. www.rockshop.co.nz | For more information about any of these products please see us in-store or visit our website.
