CHAUVeT Dj LiGHTinG GUiDe AN INTRODUcTION TO BUILDING YOUR LIGHTING RIG

Benny Tipene went from working at the Palmerston North Rockshop to being thrust under the glare of national media attention with the TV show The X Factor. Now The X Factor adventure is over we caught up with Benny to see what his plans are and get his take on it all. “I honestly did not know that I’d get as far as I got. Especially when I think back now to that point, at the auditions, when I was thinking I can’t be bothered doing this’. But it’s a good thing I did it though. I don’t regret it, it’s definitely not the way I’d have gone about being a musician but you’ve just got to bite the bullet. I think I’ve gained three years of exposure in three months. It’s so good and the support’s amazing.” Benny was first inspired by music after hearing “Let It Be” by The Beatles at his grandma’s funeral when he was 15. He got a book from the mobile library and started teaching himself piano. Then at school he met his friend Drew, who informed him that “you can’t have a piano in a band”. So The Nerines were formed with Benny on lead guitar. He started teaching himself via You Tube by following the dots to learn Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters”. Inspired by the style of finger picking, he moved onto artists like Cat Stevens songs.

Benny had put up some of his music on the music website Bandcamp. While on his laptop one night Benny was asked by a girl, who had listened it his music, if he had thought of entering The X Factor. He read the entry form, printed it out but wasn’t sure. “I always thought it was a huge mainstream, cheating way to get further”. But his mum and the rest of his family convinced him to enter. So off he went to pre-auditions. “It was not my scene at all but I figured I had nothing to lose. I stood in line for two hours, sang my song and that was it”. Four months later Benny was in The X Factor final, where he placed third. “I didn’t start writing music until I got back from Europe last year. I took over a little Baby Taylor with me. I got that guitar ‘cos I fell in love with it and it’s 2kgs and fitted in the overhead locker. I started writing riffs over there but then turned the riffs into melodies and started putting words to it. That’s how it all started. I just took it as a side interest and then started putting demos online. But the idea was always to get a band together to play them and to keep going forward with my own original music.” Since the show Benny has signed a deal with Sony Music and released a single “Walking On Water”. “If I’d won the show that would have been the winners single, it’s such a catchy song, so will be fun to play live”. Now the plan is to release an EP and to put his band together and tour. “Having other musicians on stage is a completely different energy, you get to lean on each other and feed off the energy”. BENNy PlAyS:

The Nerines entered the Rockquest in Palmerston North and won a future artist recording at the local venue/recording studio called The Stomach. “If we hadn’t entered Rockquest I probably wouldn’t be here doing this now.” The Nerines continued to do gigs over the next few years. Benny explains “We’re still a band now, it’s just everyone’s doing their own thing, including me.”

COLe CLARk FAT LADy 1AC “I picked it up and held it and strummed a C and felt something resonated in my body that wasn’t just the guitar. I knew I needed this guitar. It’s bright but full of bass and the electrics are amazing. It’s such a natural looking organic guitar.”

Through The X Factor Benny has become one of the most identifiable Rockshop employees. “I think it’s every musician’s dream to work for the Rockshop. At least I really wanted to when I was 17 but it took me until I was 22 to get a job there. I was going around handing out posters for gigs and was talking to the manager James, who said they were looking for someone and I should put my CV in. Me and my friend both went for it at the same time and I got it. I was stoked, I was really stoked. I actually really miss it, doing the stock and putting it on the pallet, that was my job, out the back.”

The other part of the job Benny liked was the musical instrument education and knowledge he gained. “I learnt so much and my love for acoustic guitars grew so much. You meet so many cool people doing cool things coming through the shop every day, it was such a cool environment.

Putting together the perfect pedalboard. There’s no denying that pedals are hot right now! In these uncertain economic times, it’s a lot easier to blow a couple of hundred bucks on a great pedal than a couple of thousand dollars on a great guitar or amp. As a consequence the pedalboards of NZ have been growing immensely and rapidly in the last little while. Putting together a pedalboard is a lot of fun, and we’ve got some tips and hints to help you have the PeRFeCT pedalboard. So get yourself a board, get your pedals ready, then have a look at our ideas below.

Signal Chain The order in which you place your effects can often have a dramatic effect on how they sound or react. As a simple experiment, take a wah pedal and a distortion pedal. First try it with the wah as the first thing in the chain, running into the distortion. Now try it the other way. BIG difference, huh? The rules are, there are no rules. Some of the most inspiring tones in history have come from guitarists running non-standard signal chains…. However for 90% of us, there is an established chain of FX placement that delivers the familiar tones we all love…

If you are wanting to use pedal to boost your volume for soloing, then you’ll Need to use it in the loop for an amp with internal overdrive. If however all your overdrive/distortions come from pedals and you run into a CLeAN amp, then you don’t need to use the FX loop and you can just observe the signal chain above.

Velcro with

self-adhesive backing (to attach to the pedal) has been the industry standard method of securing pedals to boards for years now. Unfortunately most pedalboard builders have run into the problem though where after a couple of weeks, the Velcro starts coming off the pedals, making the pedals slide around the board, and leaving a sticky residue. The trick here is all in the application of the Velcro… 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

To Loop Or Not To Loop If you get your distortion from within your guitar amp, then you should strongly consider running your Modulation FX, and delay pedals in the amplifier’s eFFeCTS LooP. As per the signal chain above, modulation FX, delay and Reverb all tend to be much more useable when placed AFTeR your distortion – which is what your amp’s FX loop does….it gives you an “insert point” that is located after the amplifier’s in-built overdrive circuit. The downside is that it requires running two additional long cables to your pedalboard.

Make sure the underside of the pedal is CLeAN and dRY. Cut the Velcro to the required length/shape to fit your pedal’s base. Remove the self adhesive backing strip from the Velcro. Use a hairdryer to gently heat the self adhesive (glue) side of the velcro. You will see it turn slightly glossy as it heats. Place Velcro on the underside of the pedal, applying as much pressure as you can for a while. At least 30 seconds, but the longer the better. ReSIST THe URGe To PUT THe PedAL RIGHT oNTo YoUR BoARd. Let the glue cool and cure for AT LeAST one hour before you install the pedal onto the board.

Patch Cables don’t skimp on patch cables.

Cheap cables can potentially add noise into your setup and rob tone. They also break easily. (Those little coloured multi-pack patch cables are notorious problem makers). Make a one-off purchase of some high quality shielded patch cables, and you’ll never need to worry about them again.

Power

one of the most important considerations is how to power your pedalboard. The usual entry into powering a pedalboard is buying a “wall-wart” style power adaptor (such as a 1-Spot) and

attaching a dC daisy chain. This is certainly the cheapest way to go, but results in a slightly messy pedalboard that has the potential for adding some noise into your system, and may not be able to provide enough power for some modern high-current effects units. we recommend a good “brick style” power adaptor (such as dB11 Hot Stone or Voodoo Labs Pedal Power 2) as being the best solution. whilst it adds some bulk to your pedalboard, you get quiet, reliable power in varying voltages/currents, as well as usually more tidy dB cabling on your board.

Cliff Burton Signature Bass Aria Pro II SB-Black’n Gold I It’s hard to argue that Metallica are probably the most successful and undoubtedly one of the most influential metal bands of all time. It’s even harder to understate the importance and impact that bassist Cliff Burton had on the band’s career, and to metal bass players in general. Cliff Burton was actually Metallica’s second bassist (replacing original member Ron McGovney), joining the fledging band in 1982. He quickly made his mark on the band, becoming a key songwriter in the band, but more notably splashing his unique solo-infused bass style onto Metallica’s seminal first album Kill ‘em All – the album which began their trip to superstardom. Cliff continued to change the face of metal bass throughout the next two albums – Ride the Lightning, and the album many regard as Metallica’s masterpiece – Master of Puppets. Famously, in September 1986, as Metallica were touring Master of Puppets and their career was skyrocketing, their tour bus crashed and flipped in rural Sweden. Most of the band were shaken, but unscathed. Cliff however was thrown out a window and pinned under the bus. He was unable to be saved, and on the evening of 26th September 1986, he tragically passed away at the scene. His legacy has never been forgotten. His playing style and tone greatly influenced legions of metal bassists forever more and tracks such as “Orion” and “(Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth”, are often regarded as bass masterpieces. Cliff started out his Metallica career using a Rickenbacker 4001 bass, but soon began to search for a new instrument once he discovered that the Rickenbacker was too fragile for daily use on the road. His search led him to discover Aria basses in early 1984, which delivered the playabiliy, tone and rugged reliability that he required. From 1984 until his untimely death, Cliff had switched to use the Aria basses almost exclusively. Not only for touring either…when you listen to Metallica’s Master of Puppets album, it’s the Aria bass you are hearing on the record.

Cliff had multiple basses, but really there were two guitars that he used regularly. Both were somewhat similar in that they were variants on Aria’s SB (Super Balanced) design. The more basic looking of the two instruments was his SB-1000 – but Cliff’s favoured instrument was the flashier SB-Black’n Gold I – A similar instrument that featured more elaborate “cats eye” inlays as well as 24k goldplated hardware. It is the Black’n Gold that Aria have chosen to re-release for 2013. After working extensively with Ray Burton (Cliff’s father) and Metallica’s guitar techs, Aria have perfectly recreated the instrument that Cliff took on stage and in the studio. The Aria Pro II SB-Black’n Gold is a 34”scale Alder-bodied Neck-Thru bass that was built with astonishing attention to detail (typical of Japanese craftsmen). It is completely faithful to the original design – with a key feature being its all-solid brass hardware (including handmade tuners) which are all plated in 24K Gold. What differentiates it from the original is the inlaid Cliff Burton signature on the rear of the headstock. You also get a certificate of authenticity signed by Ray Burton and Toshi Matsumura of Aria guitars. The Aria Pro II SB-Black’n Gold was released with great fanfare at the 2013 NAMM show in Anaheim. Ray Burton himself was there at the release along with Rob Trujillo (Metallica), Dave Ellefson (Megadeth) and Mike Bordin (Faith no More). Only 250 of this outstanding bass are to be made and only one will come to New Zealand. This ain’t just a bass to hang on the wall looking pretty either. In June this year, Metallica thrilled crowds at the 2013 Orion Music+More festival in Detroit by making a surprise appearance on a small stage (where they were billed under the name “Dehaan”) and performed Kill ‘em All in its entirety. Bassist Rob Trujillo rose to the occasion, poignantly playing his Aria SB-Black’n Gold bass for “(Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth” and “Whiplash” as Ray Burton himself watched from the side of the stage. A fitting tribute indeed to the much missed, superbly talented and utterly legendary Cliff Burton.

PUTTING THE LIVE SHOW TOGETHER Ben Barter and Jimmy McDonald from Lorde explain their unique setup

uch has already been written about the phenomenon that is Lorde. This 16-year-old school girl from Auckland’s North Shore has seemingly burst out of nowhere onto the musical landscape. The subject of much industry hype (which for once has been completely justified) Lorde’s reached #1 in NZ and gone on to be the first female in 17 years to reach #1 on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart in the US. “Royals” is still dominating the airwaves and charts in the US and she now has a slew of tours, major TV appearances and iconic festivals to perform. The Love Club EP was written, recorded and produced with Joel Little and was very much a studio based project. With the rapid success of the eP, then came the challenge of translating the tracks from the eP into a live music experience. All those involved in the project knew that simply singing to backing tracks wasn’t going to do justice to the nuances of the music or translate the intent of the songs. Given the minimal instrumentation of the songs and the electronic nature of the tracks, a traditional band setup wasn’t going to fly. enter Ben Barter and Jimmy Mcdonald, two drummers who have been involved in numerous well known NZ projects. Ben has played for Kingston, Kids in Space and the Wyld. Jimmy for the Popstrangers and Ruby Frost. They both auditioned for the Lorde drum chair. Ben got the nod but having heard the eP Jimmy started to hound management until he also got the job, completing Lorde’s musical duo. “We wanted it to feel live”, according to Jimmy. Ben goes on to explain that “We wanted to give it as much credibility as possible and it’s also more fun for us playing it all properly. But then the advantage of playing it all separately is that the sound guy mixing it out front is going to have a lot more to play with. It’s gonna sound a lot fuller than compressed into two backing tracks.” Ben has a very stripped down drum set-up with HiHats, Snare drum, Bass drum and Floor tom. “I’ve got Roland triggers on everything, apart from the acoustic floor tom and hats. All the triggers go through the Roland SPdSX and I have a few more pads that also go through it.

I’ve got all the samples for each song on the SPdSX. I change the patch for each song, so we play exactly what’s on the recordings. So I work out as much as I can do before it gets silly. If there’s some double HiHat tracks or doubling up or something, Jim’s got a separate drum track of the stuff that he puts out, so everything I can’t do he plays.” Jimmy plays a Novation Impulse 61 keyboard. “We run Ableton and all the trigger pads on the Impulse are assigned. We worked with Joel, Lorde’s producer, who sampled everything out for us. So all the vocal samples and the little ditty sounds and stuff are on the pads”. Jimmy plays the Arturia soft synths live, which were used on the recordings, completing the setup using all the original sounds. Neither of them are strangers to unique electronic set-ups. Ben has been using triggers and electronics for a few years with Kids in Space and The Wyld, while Jimmy was introduced to it through Ruby Frost. “There were only two of us in the band, so I was in control of the backing tracks. It was out of fear of it going down and I wouldn’t know what to do, that I had to learn it, but ended up loving it. Playing with the keys and the pads is so percussive, so I found the independency of it all easier.“ Lorde’s live show success has also been rapid. They were called into play the Splendor in the Grass festival on 24 hours’ notice, to replace Frank ocean, when he tore his vocals cords. In only their eighth show they were playing to in excess of 15,000 people. “We started with doing smaller showcases in NZ, then Australia, then a couple weeks in the US doing radio and club showcases. Now this next tour in September is more than just club shows and is a lot more fun. It gets a bit nerve racking doing industry showcases, with these guys making decisions on careers in the crowd.” With the release of Lorde’s album Pure Heroine in September, Ben and Jimmy are set for a very busy musical adventure for the next few months.

JAM BUS Play It Strange currently has a programme called the JAM BUS. It’s a mobile recording studio that rolls into primary and intermediate schools, and students turn up and make records. It focuses on the creative and performance pursuits of young New Zealanders. Supported by the NZ Rockshop, Lion Foundation, the Ministry of Social development and the Music Foundation, the JAM BUS spends a day with the pupils, recording their songs and their music, and a Cd of all the school’s songs recorded is given to each of the students that take part. So far, the programme has been enormously successful. “The session …was the highlight of my life here as Principal. It has always been a longstanding dream to have our kids performing and showcasing their talents in an environment where they can develop their own style.” - Corinne Hansell, Tamaki Primary School To date there have been 61 schools and over 7,350 students involved with the project. We have recorded over 1,000 songs and pieces of music; from drum groups to ukulele orchestras, marimba bands to jazz bands, school choirs and soloists, rock-n-roll youngsters to budding pop stars. The breadth of creativity in the young, the eagerness to have themselves heard, and their passion for song and creativity, is extraordinary. It’s a tragedy that history has typically muted these creative minds. That small window of opportunity is there in the formative years; it is unadulterated by false social stigmas, by self-consciousness; and as a whole they are at one with their imaginations. We believe, and it’s a belief that has been strengthened since this programme has started, that society is apathetic to the lively imaginations of children. Youngsters learn as they walk into many NZ

secondary schools that their creative pursuits may be all well and good, but academia and sports are the stepping-stones to adulthood. At Play it Strange, there is a range of programmes that aim at drawing out and shining a light on the wonderful songwriting and performance skills that exist in the secondary school system. There is a lot of it, but in terms of student participation, it’s not often a large percentage of the school. Not so with primary school students. We have had numerous schools in which every child involved has participated in the writing of the music we record. Not only that, but they run up to us as we arrive to let us know that it’s they who have written it, and to tell us about how they wrote it and why it’s so good. Not only that, but it is THAT good. The original songs and music being made in primary and intermediate schools is fantastic. They are writing honestly and directly and with an aim at making a difference. And those watching from the wings are truly enchanted with the results. “The students were able to believe they could be anything, anyone or anywhere in the world. Reason 7 Review

was created in 2003 by award-winning Wellingtonbased New Zealand Multi-instrumentalist/Producer Jeramiah Ross. He performs and records a variety of musical styles from electro, downtempo, ambient, classical and synthesizer-based compositions, taking full advantage of the advances in modern audio software. He has been involved in music since he was four years old with classical piano, playing different instruments in bands during his teens and various studio session work in his early 20s. Recently Jeramiah has branched into video game soundtracks and sound design.

Reason 7.

In a world with just about any possible option in regards to creation and manipulation of sound, Reason 7 adds a whole bunch of new features to its flagship studio software Reason. Never heard of Reason? In essence it’s a digital form of the 1990s hardware studios, when making electronic music before computers involved plugging in many pieces of equipment and cables. In a digital form this is great as it allows for many routing (plugging this into that) options. It’s a highly capable piece of software with everything you need to create great music. It has evolved past just being for electronic music producers with the inclusion of audio warping and much more over the last few years.

Starting up.

Once you fire up Reason 7 and get through the pretty painless registration process which you can do by creating a new account and writing the licence to a ignition USB key, or just simply write the licence to your computer, you're shown 3 split views of an Arranger for your MIdI and Audio data, a rack for all your “Gear” and a large SSL based Mixer. And yes, it is large, it takes up most of your screen but you can turn areas of the mixer on and off such as different sections. You can also detach each of these views and share between multiple monitor setups (which when using Reason is highly recommended) or use F5,F6,F7 to flip between the 3 main views with detached floating windows. While creating a track I found myself resizing windows and scrolling a lot on my single screen. This is not a problem once you get used to it. But it can give you a bit of a mouse work out!

The Kit. To be honest, there is something kind of nice about Reason’s approach. Just out of the box everything is there; a great synth called Thor, a good drum machine called Kong, Samplers and effects. Also there is a store that sells Rack extentions (Re) - some extensions range from creative tools and effects to full blown instruments and are mostly reasonably priced. Third party plugin developers such as one of my favorites u-he have a range, as well as Softube and many others.

The Sounds.

Reason comes with a great broad selection of sounds, some really great drums and lots of stock out-of-the-box options, most are pretty good to use in general production, lots of tweaking options. I often find that the Orchestra Bank is always a good resource to go to in terms of creating good mock ups of classical music and lots of different loops and styles to get something going pretty quick.

The Arranger. This is where all the recording, editing and arranging goes. Reason introduces something called Blocks which can be used like structures, creating Blocks around your chorus, verse, and bridge sections and re-arranging them. Sometimes I find this a bit fiddly and it’s got its own quirks, but over all it’s a good space to use. There are heaps of functions that you can use via the tool box, mostly around grooves and lots of cool tricks around MIdI manipulation.

The Mixer. I always find it funny that software tries to emulate hardware when you can do pretty much anything in the virtual environment. But that aside it’s a very nice sounding full featured beast of a mixer. The Master Bus Compressor and all the tools to really shape a mix. I really like the pop up eQ with built-in Spectrum. I haven't used a real SSL mixing desk so I can’t comment on its sound, but again with a few computer screens you can get a really good work flow. It would be great with a big control surface.

Overall. I would recommend Reason to people that like to muck around, plug things in and enjoy a good technical workout. It has lots of sounds to play with, great for working in production music and dance styled music. A multi-monitor setup is the way to go.

Whether you’re a seasoned club veteran or a legend of the house party, this app will deliver something that will improve your performance and provide hours of fun in the process. The first thing that impressed me was the astounding ease of use - I was up and running within seconds of the app download finishing. There is no complex file system here, the app simply links to your existing synced iTunes playlist on your iPhone or iPad! This is the most powerful thing about the Traktor dJ software. Once you have the music playing you will be making use of the many extensive features the software offers within a few taps. Other strengths are the beat grids and syncing ability of the software. It very quickly processes a song and once this is done, Traktor’s world famous powerful beat grids take over. Before you know it, your mixes are as tight as someone who has been dJing for countless years. Traktor dJ has all the basic functions any dJ needs to perform at the highest level. Three-band cut and boost eQ (Low, Mid and High), Cue mix, volume and a crossfader are all available with ease giving you the ability to deliver a high standard set. This is where the fun begins - beyond the ‘basic’ dJ functions, Traktor dJ opens up a world of creativity with what feels like an endless collection of creative possibilities. The first of these is the loop function. Looping is something that has become a standard across many of today's best software applications and this is expected. However it’s the way that Traktor dJ allows you to loop songs and then manipulate them that really is the creative part. To loop any track that is playing you simply tap the screen where you want the loop points to be and the song will loop. Want to make the loop smaller? Touch the screen again and move your fingers and the size of the loop will change as you move your fingers - now this is fun! Another legendary feature of Traktor Pro software is the range of studio quality effects and Traktor dJ is no different. It has many of the professional dJ’s favourite effects available like delay, Reverb, Gater, Flanger, Beatmasher, LoFi and High & Low pass filters. Once again a few simple touches of the screen and you will have this mastered within seconds. As with the ‘professional’ level software, Traktor’s Cue points are a simple yet powerful addition to any dJ’s bag of tricks, and Traktor dJ gives you

eight Cue points (two more than Traktor Pro, I might add). This means you can easily jump from point to point in any given song at the press of a button, giving you yet again even more control over your mix. The thing that really grabs my attention about the Cue points function in Traktor dJ is you can easily transfer your Cue points back to your Traktor Pro laptop, making prep for your sets easier, and I must admit more enjoyable than spending even more hours hunched over in front of your laptop! The snowflake icon was one function that really caught me off guard; A simple press of this button and it opens up a world of creativity. What this function does is it freezes the song and gives you the ability to re-edit the song by individual beats on the fly, and I have to admit this is the part of the software that I had the most fun. It will only take you a few hours to master Traktor dJ, and this is perhaps the most impressive thing about the program. Now you will be left wanting to take your performance to the next level - This is where the Kontrol Z1 comes in! The Kontrol Z1 is a purpose-built controller/mixer to go alongside the Traktor dJ software (and any Traktor software). It hosts a specific controller for all the functions you need to mix your tracks to perfection and it really does open up the possibilities of the Traktor dJ software. With its headphone port and high quality soundcard, the Kontrol Z1 is your mixer, and your iPad or iPhone is the turntables. Traktor have built their reputation on building some of the world's best quality dJ controllers and soundcards, and the Kontrol Z1 is no different. Giving you real hands-on control over the mix, and the ability to really manipulate and control your mix. designated eQ, Volume, Gain, Main Volume, Headphone select and Volume and a Crossfader, as well as controls forTraktor's powerful filter and effects means the Z1 is everything you would ever ask for from a dJ Mixer and so much more. Often it is the simple things in these increasingly complex products that really impresses you. On the Kontrol Z1 it was that "they thought of that too” moment when you have the Kontrol Z1 connected to your iPad or iPhone and it charges, meaning you will only need one power point for your entire dJ set up; so simple but so key in a world that you often feel like you are drowning in various cables as dJ set ups become more and more complex. In summary the Traktor dJ software is a great product that will deliver hours of fun to anyone with any musical bone in their body. And for the seasoned Traktor user it will be a great addition to your digital dJ set up that will make your life easier. The addition of the Kontrol Z1 to this already powerful software opens up a range of possibilities and will have you rocking any party from the house to the club within seconds.

Chauvet DJ lighting guide Before you start building your lighting rig, you need to know the basics about DJ lighting equipment. Selecting the right lighting equipment can make the difference between creating an atmosphere that is interesting and gets people moving, or one that is stark and boring.

LED Lighting

You must of heard of the new generation of dJ lights all powered with Leds instead of conventional lamps. LedS have an average lifespan of 100,000 hours – that’s approximately 11 years of continuous operation. This means no expensive lamp replacements ever, and they are also 80% efficient and use 90% less power than lamps. All this equates to lower running costs and no heat is generated so no fans are needed to cool the lamps, and no dust or gunk will be sucked into your lights. It also means a single unit like an Led wash light can generate all the colours, not just white like old school par cans.

Fog Machines

These are a very important part of your lighting rig as they provide a ‘medium’ for the lights to shine through – think of times you’ve driven on a foggy night – your headlights light up the fog – this is what we are trying to achieve by adding fog to a venue. Lasers, effects and scanners all benefit greatly. Modern fog machines are water based unlike the old ‘smoke’ machines that used toxic oils and suchlike. NZ Rockshop has many models to choose from and fluids available.

Stage Lights

These are lights that are used to light you, the performer and/or the dance floor in various colours. Most dJs want a subtle light illuminating them and some sort of lights to illuminate the dance floor. These days most people opt for Led based par cans or wash lights, as they have built-in sound-to-light, can be controlled via dMX and can be any colour or combinations of colours. The advantages of Led are numerous – low power use, multiple colours, built-in control, NO lamps to replace, no heat etc…

Effect Lights

output beams of colour and make patterns on the walls and dance-floor, usually moving to the beat of the music you are playing. These are best used in conjunction with fog or haze as

then you see all the beams of light, not just the pattern on the wall or floor. The latest generation of Led-based light effects are brighter and better than old lamp-based units. They can easily fill a dance floor and provide some movement to make your show more interesting. Most are sound active or can be dMX controlled.

Scanners project solid beams of light across the dance floor, adding depth and texture to the mood. “Intelligent” scanners will move in time with the music or to pre-programmed dMX commands. Scanners are best used when in conjunction with fog or haze to get the best results.

Strobe lights

flash intermittently to provide a slow-motion or freeze-frame effect that can add to the drama of your dance floor – something that should only be done occasionally as a highlight in your show.

Lasers are very impressive and can add another dimension to your show. They are best used in conjunction with fog or haze as you really need to see the ‘beams’ – they also make tunnels and waves which look really awesome to the audience. Lasers are not something that should be used all the time, just on occasion throughout the show to emphasise a particular part of a song etc.

A Basic Kit to get you started

We recommend starting with a lighting stand and t-bar (to mount the lights on), a couple of Led par cans or wash lights, a basic fog machine and one or more ‘moving’ effects. You can add lasers, Led UV panels (to give that black light effect) and other units at any time to enhance your show. You can control the lights via dMX or have them on sound active operation (built-in) and turn them on and off with a controller. There’s really no limit apart from your imagination, the great thing about the new Led technology is there’s no limit to how many units you can plug in to power as they all use a fraction of the power required by lamp based lights.
