FROM THE CHAIRMAN

After almost twenty years as Chairman of Ellerslie Business Association, Rob Pollard has retired from the role to spend more time with his young family and focus on his dental business. Fortunately, Rob will continue as Vice Chair, sharing his depth of knowledge, experience and in particular supporting me as his successor. It is a privilege for me to publicly acknowledge Rob for his commitment, skill and calm leadership of a team of volunteers who have driven the revival of ‘Ellerslie’ which we all enjoy today. It is a vibrant community where people care and connect with one another, privately and commercially. The annual Fairy Festival in September is unique to Ellerslie and encourages families from all over Auckland to experience what Ellerslie has to offer. This year the Festival was promoted very successfully by Megan who encouraged business and community participation. In December, the Santa Parade will close off Main Highway to once again showcase Ellerslie to Auckland families. These are just two high profile examples established under Rob’s leadership. What about me! As a young school boy growing up in Christchurch, I worked part time for a retail jeweller and my lifetime involvement and passion for jewellery began. I spent nine valuable years working for a Christchurch manufacturing and wholesale jeweller and in my travels I met Penny from Central Otago, my wife and best friend. Together we lived in London for twelve years where our three children were born. For two years I worked for a large Bullion Company in Hatton Garden and then we established our own Jewellery Wholesale and Manufacturing business. A New Zealand lifestyle for our family brought us home and we settled in Auckland. Fortunately in 2001, our family purchased a very tired Ellerslie Jewellers. We had a vision to create a ‘Village’ Jeweller and Engraver where we could offer exceptional personal and professional service with quality and value for money. My previous 35 years’ experience in the industry assured competitive

in house manufacturing, cutting out the middle man and passing savings on to our customers. Our growth has continued year on year and we are proud of our involvement with the Ellerslie Community and greater Auckland area as our reputation expands. The brand ‘Ellerslie’ endorses and supports our business model. We have established a team independent of the Rennell family who successfully run the business on a daily basis. Our manager is American married to a Kiwi. Our Indian Jeweller and Engraver has been with us for fourteen years. We also have a South African Jeweller, a Samoan Engraver and Russian diamond setter so a little United Nations. We are looking forward to our 15th Christmas in Ellerslie and celebrating my 50 years in the jewellery industry. The research that brought us to Ellerslie High Street in 2001, against a shopping mall, stands the test of time today. Rentals and overheads are less than Mall costs and these savings can be passed on to our customers. The atmosphere and convenience of High Street shopping where there is a selection of specialty retail and services is gaining traction against Malls. Our expanding city with Council and Government preference for higher density housing guarantees the high street and especially Ellerslie a prosperous future. Now that the roadworks are completed we can all look forward to a prosperous end to our

year with just a few weeks until Christmas and a holiday period to enjoy. Having been a board member of the Ellerslie Business Association for the past 15 years, I look forward to working with the team to follow Rob in serving the Ellerslie Community. Our task is made easier with the help of Desley Simpson, Chairperson of the Orakei Local Board, Kate Cooke and Cameron Brewer. John Rennell Chairman Ellerslie Business Association

look forward to the projects we have underway. In Ellerslie, we’ve undertaken world-leading research on artificial turf for the Michaels Avenue Reserve redevelopment, funded the establishment of Ellerslie Community Patrols, provided funding for two beautiful mosaic murals, supported events like the Ellerslie Spring Fairy Festival, ARTerslie and the Ellerslie Santa Parade, among other projects. We look forward to continuing our work in the suburb and the ward. There have been some changes to the Ellerslie Business Association, with Rob Pollard stepping down from the role of chair and John Rennell from Ellerslie Jewellers taking up the position. The Ellerslie Residents’ Association has also had a change in leadership, with Edgar Henson taking over the chair role from Bryan Johnson. A big thank you to these hardworking volunteers who put their time and effort into supporting the community. Cricket players in the board area will be pleased to know that work is moving ahead at Michaels Avenue Reserve. Weather permitting, the premier cricket block should be ready for play by the end of November and half of the cricket nets are already open. There will also be a second artificial cricket block installed Please proof, sign and with two grass practice strips alongside it.

The silly season is nearly upon us and although it’s a time of celebration, it’s also a chance to reflect on the year that’s been – or in the board’s case, the past five years. November marks the fifth anniversary of the Orakei Local Board’s formation and we are the only board to have been re-elected in its entirety for a second term. It’s great to look back on all of our achievements to date and to

The pond at the reserve has also had a clean-up, with the council’s Stormwater Operations removing two 10-tonne truckloads of aquatic weeds, mainly willow weed, at the community’s request. The result is a much cleaner and clearer pond. The third stage of the reserve’s development is about to go out for public consultation, so make sure you visit the Shape Auckland website (shapeauckland.co.nz) between 16 November and 7 December to have your say on the plans. This stage includes the reconfiguration of car parking, improved pedestrian and vehicle circulation and the creation of an ‘activity hub’ in the centre of the reserve. Implementation of this stage is intended to coincide with construction of new clubrooms planned by the Ellerslie Sports Club. There will be an open day on 22 November at the YMCA childcare centre play area in the reserve between 11am and 2pm, so make sure you head along to discuss the draft options. Finally, Christmas events are currently being finalised in our area. I may well see you on December 6 at St Heliers’ Community Carols on the Green, which will be held on Vellenoweth Green from 5.30pm, or at the Ellerslie Santa return by Parade held at 11am the same day.

Local MP Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga

The Changing Face of Ellerslie Over the past 10 years Ellerslie has undergone some steady change with more coming – changes I even noticed when I owned a house in Marua Road up until last year. With so many young families moving into Ellerslie in recent years, the median age is now only at 36 and Ellerslie’s ethnic diversity has not changed as fast as other parts of Auckland between the last two Census. Recent migrants from overseas may be finding it difficult to gain entry into some of the higher priced housing markets within central isthmus areas leading to this occurrence, but that’s not to say locals are finding it any easier What has changed though is the number of people who call Ellerslie home. In 2001 7,000 people lived in Ellerslie. This number is already well up, and is expected to double in the coming 30 years. The relatively new Ellerslie Rail Station on the other side of the Southern Motorway has been a success since the $8m upgrade in 2012. The improvements included station access, safety, and aesthetics. In addition to the arrival of the new electric trains, we’ve seen a significant increase of residents who catch a train on a daily basis. In fact, over the last year alone annual patronage at the Ellerslie Rail Station has increased by 56,369 train trips, or 15.5% in the 12 months to July, with the newly-constructed shelter amenity currently set to only lift that. As a central and well located suburb, for better or worse Ellerslie is at the forefront of Auckland’s growth. But it must be quality and sustainable growth. It’s great to see the ongoing efforts being made by the Orakei Local Board and the Ellerslie Resident and Business Associations in advocating for town centre upgrades, cycle paths, and other infrastructure to ensure that Ellerslie is prepared for the future. For further news and views please follow me on Facebook or visit www.cameronbrewer.co.nz or email: cameron.brewer@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz Cameron Brewer - Auckland Councillor for Orakei

My family and I enjoyed the Ellerslie Spring Fairy Festival along with many local people. It ended as a glorious spring day with families enjoying the many fun activities and food on offer. Events like these help define our local area and I look forward to the upcoming Christmas Santa Parade to provide more of the same. The big news locally has been the decision to finally plant a tree(s) back on our maunga, One Tree Hill (Maungakiekie). I know this is an issue that means a lot to many people in our community. While it has taken a while, in my opinion, it will be an enduring solution and will bring all people together as a symbol of hope and unity. A plan is set for planting to start in mid-2016, which is encouraging. As Associate Minister of Health I gave the opening address at the New Zealand Aged Care Association annual conference. Our shared goal in Government is to improve the lives of senior people in care. The theme of the conference was “Aged Care Technologies: from Paper to Cloud”. The key to the future will be the role of new and advanced technologies in improving care. All this needs to happen while retaining a high quality workforce and dealing with rapidly shifting demographics. I have visited many care facilities in our area and many are well run. However, we need to do more to improve the lives of our elderly, which is why I will be working closely with industry groups to make sure these issues are addressed by developing an update of the Health of the Older Persons Strategy, in 2016. The government also recently signed the Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement. It is New Zealand’s biggest ever trade deal and will deliver us significant benefits. There will be over 800 million customers around the world for our goods and services. The economy will benefit by at least $2.7 billion per year by 2030 and this will deliver more jobs and higher incomes. The bill will go through our standard parliamentary processes and be implemented within two years. Our local area will benefit from this through expanded opportunities in manufacturing, tourism and services industries. In parliament, as Corrections Minister, I moved the second reading of the Drug and Alcohol Testing of Community-Based Offenders and Bailees Legislation Bill. This bill will allow authorities to test offenders whose release conditions include abstinence from drugs and alcohol. This bill will lead to reduced reoffending rates, as offenders are deterred from breaching their conditions. A substantial majority of crimes are committed by offenders with drugs or alcohol addictions, so these measures reinforce the need to address the drivers of crime at their source. Many public submissions were taken into account in the changes made at select committee stage and I expect this bill to progress through the house with widespread parliamentary support.

Ellerslie Eagles Clubrooms: Community asset

As the number of residents in Ellerslie increases, it will be more important than ever that our Parks are maintained for all to enjoy. Work at Michael Park continues and there will be a round of consultation from Monday 16 November to 7 December on the plans for Stage three. There will also be an open day on the 22 November from 11am to 2pm in the YMCA child care centre. Residents are also concerned that the Ellerslie Eagles Rugby League Football Club (EERLFC) and Liston Park be maintained and developed as community assets. A grant has been promised for a feasibility study on the EERLFC building (pictured) potential and it would be good to see plans for Liston Park too.

At the AGM on 17 August our foundation chairman, Bryan Johnson stood down, but is continuing as a committee member. Edgar Henson is our new chairman and we have a new committee member, Wendy Wilson who is a vigorous advocate for Gavin Street residents in the continuing battle with heavy trucks. Also at the AGM, it was proposed that a targeted residential rate of $5 per annum be implemented to fund the Residents’ Association. This proposal will be put to the vote at our Public Meeting on Monday 16 November 2015.

ERA Public meeting 16 November Clubs and Societies Market Place We invited as many Ellerslie associations as possible and received positive responses from Ellerslie Tai Chi, The Stables Theatre, Akarana Zone Scouts and the Tamaki Business and Professional Women’s group. The meeting enabled residents to learn of the many activities available in our suburb and build a thriving community. If you are a member of a group that missed out in 2015 but would like to display their activity in 2016 please email ellerslieresidents@gmail.com.

Unitary Plan Representatives of your committee met with staff of the Auckland Unitary Plan, Independent Hearing Panel, for advice on continuing to work in support of our submissions. As the newspapers report there are a lot of mediation meetings going on, as this magazine goes to

A busy time in Ellerslie!

10

Spring arrived in Ellerslie this year in a sprinkling of fairy dust, as pirates, fairies and a pair of special princesses bought smiles to children at Ellerslie’s iconic Spring Fairy Festival. Held on 13th September, the Festival proved extremely popular, with Main Highway almost bursting at the seams. This year, a special handmade kids market organised by The General Collective provided a popular new element to the Festival, while we also saw the return of Peter Pan, Tinkerbell and Hook in their delightful stage show. Fairy and Pirate Hair (kindly provided by Scarlett Hair Salon) and a free photo booth were other new additions to the Festival – both proving very popular. The Festival would not have been possible without the tireless work of our volunteers and amazing energy of the fairies and pirates. Very special thanks to them and our funders: NZ Community Trust, Orakei Local Board, Four Winds Foundation, and Trillian Trust. In October, the historic Christ Church on Ladies Mile opened its doors as part of the Auckland-wide Heritage Festival. The Girls Chamber Choir from One Tree Hill College performed a selection of songs for those attending the event. Pamela Stone, a long time member of Christ Church, then provided a very interesting talk on its beautiful stained glass windows, produced in 1885 by Clayton and Bell. Finally, on Sunday 18th October, volunteers from the Greenlane Christian Centre and Ellerslie School arrived in the Town Centre armed with buckets, brushes and loads of energy for our annual Town Tidy Up. They cleaned signage, planted new hanging baskets and painted a colourful new mural for us, and we sincerely appreciate their hard work and volunteer spirit.

VET Alert! – Be careful with your pets this Christmas Christmas is a time of celebration, family get togethers, fabulous food, BBQ’s, presents and good times in the sun. However, Christmas time can expose pets to toxic items that can cause great harm and potentially ruin the festivities for the family. “Pets metabolise things differently to humans and as pet owners we should be cautious on what they are exposed to” says Dr David Toomey from Abbotts Way Vets. So what do we need to look out for?

Christmas Lilies and Cats Christmas Lilies are highly toxic to Cats. These are beautiful white, pink or yellow lilies, fragrant with dark orange stamens. But ingested, they are highly toxic to cats. Even rubbing against the flowers can cause tiny particles of pollen to embed in their fur and later while ‘bathing’ these particles can be ingested causing problems including kidney failure. Although these lilies are gorgeous to have around the house we strongly recommend keeping them away from cats.

The immediate symptom of lily poisoning is sudden vomiting. Ongoing, cats experiencing lily poisoning will often exhibit signs of depression, diarrhea, dehydration, and lack of appetite (anorexia).

Christmas Chocolates and Dogs Although not as highly toxic as lilies are to cats, we still see our fair share of chocolate poisoning in dogs at Abbotts Way Vets. Different breeds are affected in different ways but the rule of thumb is “do not feed chocolate to dogs” said Dr Rachael Williams. Common signs of chocolate poisoning in dogs are vomiting (may include blood), diarrhoea, restlessness and hyperactivity, rapid breathing, muscle tension, incoordination, Increased heart rate and seizures. If your pet shows any of the above signs please get them to Abbotts Way Vets immediately, as chocolate poisoning can be life threatening. We wish you and your family a festive season and a very prosperous New Year from the team at Abbotts Way Vets.

MEGAN’S RECIPE

Eye Fillet with Roasted Garlic Aioli (Serves 6) During the festive season its handy to have a quick easy entertaining recipe on hand. This is my go to recipe as its simple, can be prepared ahead and most important of all delicious. Don’t be put off by making the aioli, I often buy a pre-made one, just make sure its a fresh good quality version as this is what elevates it to a special dish. Although eye fillet is an expensive cut - when cooked well and sliced thinly it can go a long way – you need much less per person than larger steaks. You can also make this with a cut such as scotch or sirloin and its great done on the BBQ too. Plus feel free to change out the greens to those you prefer and for hungry people serve with roasted potatoes or bread. It makes fantastic canapes or pre dinner nibbles too - simply roast the beef and some cherry tomatoes, place on top of some toasted baguette with a piece of baby spinach on the bottom. Drizzle with aioli to finish. Alternatively serve beef, tomatoes, aioli and bread on a platter for guests to serve themselves. 1 kg eye fillet of beef, trimmed 2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped 1 tsp sea salt 2 bunches asparagus 400 g baby spinach 18 small vine ripened tomatoes 1 small red onion, optional 3 Tbsp aged balsamic vinegar Roasted garlic aioli: 2 heads garlic 1 cup olive oil, use a mild version 1 pinch salt & freshly ground pepper 1 egg 1 lemon • Firstly marinate the beef, 12 - 24 hours ahead preferably but even an hour or so is ok. Add the olive oil, chopped garlic and salt to a large zip lock bag and squeeze about to combine. Add the beef and leave to marinate in the fridge. • Remove the beef from the fridge one hour before you wish to cook. Preheat oven to 200°C. Place the beef in an oven dish and roast for 25 - 30 minutes or until cooked to your liking. I find the easiest way to manage this is with a meat thermometer, a piece of equipment I wouldn’t be without. My preference is for 55°C in the center, giving medium rare meat. It will continue to cook once removed and resting. Alternatively cook on the BBQ. When the meat is cooked remove from the roasting dish and wrap tightly in foil, leave to rest in a warm place for 30 minutes. • Once beef is removed from the oven, place the tomatoes and asparagus in a roasting dish. Drizzle with olive oil and roast for 20 - 30

minutes until browned and cooked through (the asparagus might be cooked sooner depending on thickness). • Wash and dry the baby spinach and place in the serving dish. Top with roasted vegetables, very thinly sliced red onion (if using) and then the sliced beef fillet. Drizzle with balsamic vinegar and olive oil. Serve with roasted aioli, with extra on the table and some fresh crusty bread to wipe up the delicious juices. To make the aioli: Trim the tops off the heads of garlic and

drizzle with a little oil. Wrap in tin foil and roast at 200°C for 40 minutes. When cooled squeeze cloves of garlic into the bowl of a food processor. Add egg, juice of lemon and salt and pepper and process until smooth. With the motor running pour the olive oil in using a slow and steady stream until all incorporated and the mayonnaise has thickened. The garlic can be roasted in the oven a few days prior and the aioli can also be made in advance. This is also delicious with most roasted vegies or in a burger or sandwich.

Coko’s Christmas Gift Review Gorgeous traditional keepsake pieces standing approx. 70cm tall. Priced from $120.00 An absolute must have and lovely hand-medown heirloom family items.

Stylish Solutions Review by Mark Calverley Since opening their doors earlier in the year, Coko’s owner, Lesley Burgess, has brought real style and high-quality gifts, jewellery and homewares onto the Main Highway. Ellerslie’s village feel and Coko’s varied, but always stylish and tasteful range, fits together nicely and the shop is fast getting a great name for itself amongst stylish and conscientious shoppers. The Christmas themed in-store design is typically impressive – from the humble bauble to the seven foot Christmas tree - the signature eye for detail and style is ever-present. What really sets Coko apart from many other gift shops, especially those in the bigger high streets and bland malls, is that the range and quality of the chosen stock is constantly high; there is a great eclectic range of classic, modern, retro and many other influences to be seen, but the over-riding sense of simple quality and understated style is complimented by the fact that many of the pieces are unique to Coko. Owner, Lesley, explains what styles and stock appeal to her and influences her choices when searching for new items. “I am always conscious that people from all walks of life and budgets visit us at Coko, so my focus is on creating a solid mix of ladies fashion, designer jewellery, delightful accessories and homewares. Whether you are after a gift for a friend, a little something to cheer you up, or an outfit for an event, you will find something irresistible and original that you simply feel you cannot walk out without. And, of course, everything is exquisitely gift wrapped and comes with our outstanding personal service.” One of the most noticeable and pleasing aspects of Coko is that this is a shop that has something for everyone and the prices are competitive and inclusive to all budgets. If you haven’t yet popped in and had a look then make a date to do so. Lesley is always a bright and helpful, with a talent for matching pieces together and tailoring her choices to an individual’s tastes and budget. As we fast approach the Christmas gift buying season, New Year and summer, here is a selection of our favourite pieces that will make a superb gift, or a treat for yourself – because you deserve it!

Reflecting at your leisure Contemporary, private and designed for summer-long family enjoyment, this outdoor space can change personality with a flick of a switch Want to get outside, relax and escape from it all? A backyard entertainment space offers this experience all summer long. This outdoor environment was designed by landscape architect Robin Shafer, with the pool built by Neil Runciman of Frontier Pools and the landscape works completed by Second Nature. Shafer says the owners wanted an improved connection to the steeply sloping, hard-to-access rear section. They also wanted a family-friendly outdoor living environment and a feature pool. “To achieve these goals, we reconfigured and widened the rear patio, adding a clear glass balustrade, and creating a terraced garden with tropical plantings that steps down the slope,” says Shafer. “The new pool’s infinity edges allow for

Making a splash – a sheltered outdoor area overlooks this dramatic pool. The project is by landscape designer Robin Shafer, who introduced terraced gardens to negotiate the sloping site. The concrete pool was set on piles to counter the drop away and was constructed by Frontier Pools. Eight in-pool lighting scenarios allow the space to take on different moods.

uninterrupted views to the bush. “A large, overhanging tree was removed as this created too much shade and would have littered the pool with leaves. With this gone, we introduced a grouping of palms to this area for privacy.” Runciman, who specialises in concrete pools, has worked closely with Shafer on many outdoor settings and says that there were several aspects to address for this project. “In terms of visual impact, this really is a show stopper,” says Runciman. “As well as the eye-catching infinity edges, there are two flickering gas flares adding to the drama. And the pool comes alive at night,

washed with underwater LED lights that can be set to one of eight colours, or to cycle through them all.” A platform at one end of the pool is isolated by a narrow moat, for an island effect. Constructed on piles to avoid extensive retaining works, the pool also comes with labour-saving functionality, says Runciman. “This pool has a self-cleaning system where a pump draws water up through jets that pop up on the pool floor and sluice debris towards a channel at one end. The jets work in sequence, at changing angles, for full coverage of the floor and walls. This system runs five hours a day and is safe to leave on when the pool is in use.”

Christmas at Ceres The Gift of Giving & Healthy Living

As Santa, summer and Christmas approach why not do your Christmas shopping at Ceres Whole Foods in Ellerslie? The shop is a veritable treasure trove of health-focused products to suit any budget and anyone. Stuck for gift ideas? Choose from the following: • Gift vouchers: Always popular and you can be sure the person will find exactly what they want. • Purity fragrances: Ceres carries a range of locally made perfumes made from 100% pure essential oils and passionately created in NZ. • Ecobags: Do you realise just how damaging and costly plastic shopping bags are for the NZ countryside and the ocean? Make a statement by buying a stylish fabric bag made by Ecobags. The bags are made ethically and features iconic artworks by Kiwi artists. Your purchase also goes directly towards the planting of a native tree on Motutapu Island. It’s a win-win-win gift! • Himalayan Salt Lamps: These amber tinted lights are ‘suddenly’ all on-trend and the musthave item for the health conscious person. We have a huge range to choose from and some expert advice on hand to explain their purpose and benefits. As well as looking warm and comforting, they ionise the atmosphere too.

• Beeswax Candles: Exclusively from NZ and all handmade, our carefully chosen and varied beeswax candles come in a variety of shapes and designs to suit your style and budget. • Wines: Imported and local organic wines that are truly organic. Vineyards strictly certified organic by New Zealand’s leading certification agencies, the international body Demeter and local Biogro have been producing exceptional wines with qualities resulting from regenerative vines, toxin free processes and “clean” vineyards. This results in wines that are deliciously unique and true to their long organic vinicultural history. These very reasonably priced wines are extremely low in

20

organic grade sulphites when compared to conventional wines. Some are totally sulphite free. Often consumers comment on how good they feel the morning after drinking organic wines the night before, whereas, if the same amount of conventional wine was consumed it would be a different story! • SO2GO: Just in case you’re not convinced that organic wines won’t give you a hangover we also stock SO2GO. “It is a completely safe and natural product, which reduces the preservatives in wine, champagne, beer & cider. This reduction in the preservatives, can help prevent side effects including hangover headaches, Asian flush, wheezing, stuffy nose, hives and other reactions to wine.” However, we tend to believe that a lot of the discomfort that people suffer during a hangover can be due to the toxic residues in the wines resulting from conventional growing methods. • NZ Handmade Chocolates: No Christmas would be complete without chocolate and we have a selection that can make you feel just a little less guilty over the sometimes indulgent Christmas season. This is just a small range of what we have available at Ceres, Ellerslie. Please feel free to come and have a browse and ask our friendly and knowledgeable staff about some of the other gift ideas and items that we have available. Summer Sun protection: The fierce power of the NZ sun is well-known to everyone. Young and old, fair or dark you must make sure that you are protected from the skin damaging UV rays. Whilst conventional sunscreen may do the trick, it’s also packed full of nasty chemicals that can react with your skin. Ceres has a great selection of wellpriced alternative and natural sunscreens that are effective but much kinder to you and your family. We have fabulous natural sunscreens with effective ingredients such as NZ natural bentonite clay from the South Island and raspberry oil. We believe that these both are the best natural sunscreen ingredients available and there is not a nano-particle or artificial preservative in sight. Astaxanthin is a red algae that can be taken as a sun protective supplement. It is the lovely pink colour seen in some shellfish and the plumage of flamingos. It has the remarkable ability to help limit sunburn and sun sensitivity, by supporting the skin in its defence against external damage from ultra-violet radiation, as it does for flamingos! It also includes vitamin-E oil which works internally and externally to help protect the skin cell DNA from permanent damage, which can lead to skin cancers.

Skin products We have amazing organic skin care ranges. The ingredients are as precious as those found in ancient times, gold, frankincense and myrrh and damask rose. So, you see, the Three Wise Men were also into natural skin care! Biodynamic skincare products include the use of precious and semi-precious stones, rubies and tourmaline, as well as metals like gold. We are fully trained in these products and will tailor our recommendations to your individual needs. Support during the Christmas season Come in and talk to us and we will recommend easy solutions such as Chelidonium drops in water for liver and digestion and teas such a chamomile and other herbs to ease any discomfort that may occur. Emotional upsets can be eased with the help of flower essences too. Rescue Remedy® being the most famous and commonly used around Christmas time. Ceres Whole Foods in Ellerslie has exactly what you need and our friendly caring experts will help you find what is best for you. Books We also have a vast array of Anthroposophical, Rudolf Steiner and natural health books. This includes many educational resources; parenting help, children’s beautiful story books and gorgeous Christmas picture story books too. Our always abundantly stocked book section never fails to impress both with its quality and quantity. We also have non-toxic beeswax crayons, rich colouring pencils and watercolour pencils for the artists in your family. This is just a small sample of the excellent goods and gifts available at Ceres Whole Foods. So, make some time and come and have a relaxing browse around the shop. Feel free to ask our fantastic staff to explain or help you in your gift buying this Christmas and discover just why our customers keep returning with a spring in their step. 181 Ladies Mile, Ellersile. Sunglasses are a Health Necessity Although we all love to look good, sunglasses are not only a fashion item. Did you know that UV from the sun can also harm your eyes? At Greenlane Penrose Optometrist, we can provide you with a choice of fashionable sunglasses that block 100% of UV rays to protect your eyes from the damaging effects of the sun as well as looking good. Continued exposure to UV rays is linked to conditions such as cataracts, macular degeneration, lumps and bumps such as pinguecula and pterygium and skin cancers on the eyelids. The delicate skin around the eye and the eye structures themselves are particularly susceptible to sun damage and wearing sunglasses is the easiest way to reduce your risk of developing potentially sight-threatening conditions. We have a great range of sunglasses in store and can fit your prescription lenses with a good quality tint, so even spectacle wearers can be safe in the sun. Come and see us to find out what will work best for you.

NZ Police Is that sun I see? It’s party and BBQ season again (finally). Below are some summer tips to keep you and your family safe and out of trouble. If you and your teenager are hosting a party, sit down with them and sort out ground rules, including who is coming, how many, if alcohol is allowed (or not), if alcohol is present what food will be available and non-alcohol drinks for sober drivers, the time it will finish by, how guests will get home and who will be the adult supervisor. When the guests are teenagers please make sure they have pre-arranged transport to get home. Police have attended an uncountable number of parties that have spilled onto the street, leaving a large number of guests wondering around in an unfamiliar area and in most cases intoxicated. They are potentially an easy victim of crime, and generally can cause havoc on your neighbours’ peace. It is always good if you are hosting any party

(whether the guests are teenage or adult) to notify your neighbours of the fact including what time it will finish. Please remember that if the party noise level is excessive that Auckland Council Noise Control can be called anytime, day or night. A Noise Control Officer may serve a written notice to reduce the noise, if this notice is breached within 72 hours you could face equipment seizure, $500 infringement and liability up to $10,000. To call Auckland Council Noise Control phone 301 01 01. When you are inviting guests please remember to keep the numbers to a sensible level, and the security of the invites. If you are using social media please set it to private and only invite the people you want to turn up! This avoids gate crashers and the need for Police to be called to close down the party. Please drink responsibly! Police have a zero tolerance towards drunk driving and be

prepared to be stopped by Police, anywhere and anytime. If you need help for drinking you can contact the Alcohol Drug Helpline, which offers free confidential information and support on any problem, issue or query you have about your own or someone else’s drinking or drug taking. Phone: 0800 789 797.

Should I call Police? Just a quick reminder that if you see ANY suspicious activity in your area, call 111. This includes suspicious vehicles, people who come to your door asking for a random name, or if your neighbours alarm is going off. Police make an assessment when you call and prioritise every call, if persons or property are in danger, Police want and need to know. Have a great and safe summer, Newmarket Police

Heart of the Sea Releases 3/12/15

Releases 26/12/15

Academy Award nominees Carey Mulligan and Helena Bonham Carter, and three-time Academy Award winner Meryl Streep, lead the cast of a powerful drama about the women who were willing to lose everything in their fight for equality in early-20th-century Britain. The stirring story centers on Maud (played by Carey Mulligan), a working wife and mother whose life is forever changed when she is secretly recruited to join the U.K.’s growing suffragette movement. Galvanized by the outlaw fugitive Emmeline Pankhurst (Meryl Streep), Maud becomes an activist for the cause alongside women from all walks of life. When increasingly aggressive police action forces Maud and her dedicated fellow suffragettes underground, they engage in a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse with the authorities, who are shocked as the women’s civil disobedience escalates and sparks debate across the nation. Inspired by true events, SUFFRAGETTE is a moving drama exploring the passion and heartbreak of those who risked all they had for women’s right to vote - their jobs, their homes, their children, and even their lives.

In 1820, crewmen (Chris Hemsworth, Benjamin Walker, Cillian Murphy) aboard the New England vessel Essex face a harrowing battle for survival when a whale of mammoth size and strength attacks with force, crippling their ship and leaving them adrift in the ocean. Pushed to their limits and facing storms, starvation, panic and despair, the survivors must resort to the unthinkable to stay alive. Their incredible tale ultimately inspires author Herman Melville to write “Moby-Dick. Berkeley Cinema 85 Tamaki Drive, Mission Bay 1071 Phone: 488 6000

FACES OF ELLERSLIE

Katie Shortt Scarlett Hair Salon

Keiron Moore and Jackie Fu The Fitness Club

How long have you been at Scarlett Hair Salon? I have managed Scarlett for the last three and a half years and before that worked as a stylist in Kohimarama and Remuera. I have been cutting and styling hair for 17 years! I enjoy making a difference in people’s lives, suggesting something they may not have thought of themselves, or just giving them something they want. What is your ethos for the Salon? I want people to feel that Scarlett is a place where everyone is welcome. I have recently made the decision to move to Kevin Murphy products, which are all sulphate, paraben, ammonia and cruelty-free. This is something I am very passionate about, so it took me a while to choose what was the best fit for Scarlett. I am pleased that we can now offer our clients the best products available. What do you like most about Ellerslie? Ellerslie is a great community where everyone supports one another. My team and I enjoyed being part of the Ellerslie Spring Fairy Festival this year, by offering ‘fairy hair’. The people at the festival were amazing and I was pleased to be able to give back to the community. Do you have any down time? With two small children, one at school and one nearly there, my life revolves around them and my work. Both keep me very busy. Next year, though, I am looking forward to giving the Salon a freshen-up and continuing to do develop and improve what we do.

What led you to Ellerslie and The Fitness Club? We have both spent a lot of time in and out of gyms over the years while pursuing careers in IT (Keiron) and banking (Jackie). Last year we were looking for a new business opportunity and the chance to purchase The Fitness Club arose. We wanted an independent gym that would allow us to adapt to the needs of the area, so this opportunity suited us perfectly. Tell us a little about The Fitness Club Not everyone knows this, but we have three floors of equipment. We are currently upgrading our third level to further improve our facilities. We spend about three or four hours with each new client, as part of their membership, doing a proper consultation, programme design and induction, followed by a check-up six weeks later. People joining our gym stay, as they progress to their goals, which leads to them being motivated to carry on. What do you like about owning The Fitness Club in Ellerslie? Ellerslie has a great sense of community that extends into the gym. People meet each other here and it has become a great place to socialise. It is fantastic to have that community feel. What is your vision for The Fitness Club? We are very ‘hands on’ as owners and are always in and about the gym. We want people to feel like family here, and for clients to know we care about them. It is great to know members by name and to have the time just to chat between workouts.

Dentistry…..

with a difference Are you passionate and ready for a dental care experience with a difference?

Hi I’m Angela, I’m a Dentist. My dental centre is right next door in the carpark behind the Four Square. I practice all branches of Dentistry. We offer comprehensive examinations and consultations, oral hygiene maintenance, gum treatments and tooth whitening, crowns, bridges and tooth extractions, especially wisdom teeth. We also deal with pain relief, emergency dentistry, cavities, gum problems, broken teeth & fillings , cosmetic dentistry, straightening teeth, abscesses, and dentures. I do root canals and can give second opinions on them as well. We have developed special techniques to help nervous patients. In children’s dentistry our focus is to have your child grow up cavity-free. For older patients we offer senior citizen rates. I’m a registered ACC and WINZ provider. My passion is creating smiles, wellness, health, healing and oral fitness. I create individual, personalised plans to empower my patients with the knowledge they need to heal and improve the health of their lifestyles. To me dentistry isn’t just about surgery, it’s about improving people’s diet, habits and health so that they can be orally fit. So I’m also kind of a dental life coach or a dental fitness trainer. I provide holistic, scientific, advanced Dental Artistry techniques which are also more cost-effective than more expensive surgical solutions. I was the first NZ-born Chinese female to graduate from the University of Otago Dental School and set up in private practice. During my thirty plus years of dental experience I have avidly undertaken advanced dental professional development courses and have served on a number of Auckland Dental Association committees. In 2013 around twelve Dentists were chosen to be part of the New Zealand Dental Association NZDA Oral History program. I was privileged to be part of this group of Dentists, recognised as having a unique view of Dentistry. The oral interview tapes are edited and stored at the Hocken Library. My team consists of my husband Edmund Ho and dental assistant Ana. I am currently mentoring Ana who has a dental degree from the Philippines. To improve your smile in an affordable way, I use Dental Artistry skills and techniques with the latest reinforced bio-compatible and tooth-coloured bio-mimetic materials to strengthen your teeth and remaining tooth structures. Dental diseases are lifestyle diseases so if you have a dental problem and you really want to stay well and healthy, get in touch. The best way to get a hold of me is to text me on 0274 720638. My web address is on my cards, Wellness-Dentistry.com, or you can just google Wellness Dentistry or Ellerslie Dentist to find me. Check out our testimonials available on my website. I’m easy to find. There’s a sign in front of the Four Square carpark saying Angela Lowe-Ho Dental Centre. If you walk into the carpark I’m at the back, to the right. There’s a big metal yin-yang sign in front of my office window. I have a glass conservatorium.

Don’t put it off like I did… A childhood accident (and inconsiderate orthodontics) had left my front teeth uneven and ugly, causing me much embarrassment and affecting my self esteem for over 20 years. Before I saw Angela Lowe-Ho, my front teeth consisted of one oversized crown with black discoloration around the gum line – and the other tooth which had been orthodontically moved into the front tooth position was tiny and uneven. After reading the rave testimonials on Angela’s website about her ability to make ‘something out of nothing’ I decided to visit her to see what she could do for me. After all, I figured I had nothing to lose – I had been quoted $11,000 and major surgery to give me two ‘new’ front teeth by my previous dentist. To be honest, I didn’t expect any improvement from the initial consultation with Angela. But as she checked out the health of my mouth and discussed her low cost, user-friendly options for improving my smile, she filed my oversized crown down and adjusted the surrounding teeth to make my smile more even. I left that initial appointment feeling hopeful and inspired. I liked the way Angela would always ask me, “What is most important to you right now? What bothers you the most?” and then she would deal with that problem immediately. The second visit dealt with increasing the size of the tiny tooth which had been moved into a front tooth position. That day I left feeling like I had a ‘normal’ smile. On my third visit, she dealt with the major issue of the obtrusive crowned tooth -removing the black discoloration which had bothered me for years, repairing the poorly created crown and improving the aesthetics of the tooth to make it even. Even though that third visit went considerably over the allocated time; Angela refused to charge me more than she had initially quoted me – which in total was a fraction of the cost my previous dentist had quoted. Now, everywhere I go, I check out people’s smiles because I know how it feels to have awful looking teeth transformed into a wonderfully even and beautiful smile. I recommend Angela’s dental artistry at every opportunity. If you’re looking for a dentist who is capable of addressing every problem in your mouth, then Angela Lowe-Ho has my highest recommendation. Angela is passionate about every aspect of dentistry and is dedicated and committed to helping you look and feel your best. Pick up the phone and call her now.

Auckland Hearing – Your local Hearing Clinic Hearing loss is very common, and it affects people of all ages. There are many reasons for hearing loss including hereditary factors, noise exposure, trauma and ear disease. Hearing loss becomes more common as we age. Hearing loss is usually gradual. In the beginning, hearing loss takes away the start of the sentence, the little details and the punchline. With time hearing loss may increase mental fatigue - as you concentrate harder just on following along; it can begin to erode your confidence - as you are no longer sure about what was said - and lead you to feel embarrassed about missing the details, or about having to ask for repeats too often. The gradual nature of hearing loss means that we adapt over time. We change our behaviour, we choose our environments, and slowly our relationships change as everyone adjusts to a change in our hearing. Often hearing loss leads people to socialise less, which can result in less overall activity. At Auckland Hearing, we have a clear client focus. We spend the time needed to find out what is going on and come up with a solution tailored to each person we see. Hearing aid technology continues to develop at a rapid

“Hearing loss is invisible and sneaky. As hearing changes, we adjust. Gradually it affects personality and relationships. Hearing loss changes us over time.” Maree O’Sullivan pace. Current hearing aids are highly effective and virtually invisible; they automatically adjust to the listening environment you are in so you can relax, engage and be yourself. “There is nothing better than seeing the change in people once they can hear again. They are able to engage in relaxed conversations, become more confident (as they

are sure what was said - the first time) and begin to participate fully in their life. They come back to the clinic and are visibly more relaxed and laugh and smile easily. Life just becomes more interesting for them. It is a gift to be part of this change.” Says Maree O’Sullivan Auckland Hearing opened in mid-2014, at 66 Michaels Ave, Ellerslie. After working as an audiologist for more than 20 years, Maree O’Sullivan wanted to open her own clinic. Ellerslie is a great location, given its village feel and friendly locals. Maree has worked in a broad range of environments in New Zealand and overseas, including diagnostic clinics, for two hearing aid manufacturers, and teaching students at the University of Auckland Audiology Programme. More recently she has worked as a locum, in many hearing clinics around New Zealand, with a strong focus on hearing rehabilitation. Now, with a young family, Maree felt it was time to set up our Auckland Hearing Clinic in Ellerslie and serve the local community that she loves. Is Dieting Really the Answer to Losing Weight? By Anna Arlidge, owner of ClubVO2 & REPs member (Register of Exercise Professionals)

For those who want to shift a few kilos for health reasons, or just to feel better in your jeans, it can seem like drastically reducing food intake, or eliminating food groups, can be the answer. And as a nation we could do with losing some weight. Despite all the advances in health and science, that should be helping us live a longer and healthier lives, we are facing a future where many of us may die earlier than we need to, due to unhealthy food choices, and lack of regular physical activity. In fact NZ Ministry of Health research puts one in four adults (aged 15 years and over) in the obese weight category (27.8%). So why is it that in a country that spends a fortune on weight-loss plans, food and products (in New Zealand low-fat food sales account for $100 million a year alone) we are we not getting any healthier? Many people try and lose weight by investing time and money in food plans, quick-fix diets, and ‘detox’ plans that promise results for little effort. While their intentions are well meaning, if health and weight loss is the aim, then a balanced, sensible approach and advice from a professional, rather than from an advertisement, is essential. So despite the hefty price tag diet plans products and systems cost, they are not providing the results, and the health, you want. So before you invest time and money in your health and reducing your waistline, consider these three important steps: 1. Real food = real results No one chemical, food or supplement is going to make you healthier. In fact, it’s our reliance on processed food that is causing much of the current damage. Real food, in as close to it’s natural form as possible, is going to have better health results than anything out of a packet. Combine plenty of unprocessed food in a balanced diet, with treats kept to a minimum, and with regular exercise to help you maintain a healthy weight.

30

2. It’s going to take some effort With the huge volume of unhealthy, but cheap and readily available food on offer, and the increasing demands on our time, any change of lifestyle is going to take some work. Time and effort spent preparing healthy meals, and taking time out to get active, may be a challenge in the short-term, but the long-term gains will be worth it. The added benefit of exercising is that it can improve your mood and increase your energy levels, which will make the effort very worthwhile. 3. Exercise plays an important role in health It is true that you can’t out exercise an unhealthy diet, but exercise is an important contributor to health. While the latest diet product may claim that you can lose weight effectively, without exercise, the World Health Organisation reports that physical activity is fundamental to energy balance and weight control. Also, the Ministry of Health recommends lifestyle approaches, rather than single factor approaches, to weight loss. In the words of Dr. Robert Butler, of the Longevity Centre, USA: “If exercise could be put in a pill it would be the most widely prescribed medicine in the world”. So, instead of looking for a quick fix, talk to a Registered Exercise Professional at ClubVO2 Health & Fitness about making exercise a part of your weight-loss plan. For further help and or information contact Anna, or her team, at ClubVO2. 23A Main Highway, Ellerslie. Contact 09 579 2582 or www.clubvo2.com or email to info@clubvo2.com

Core Strength: Who needs it? ‘Your core’, refers to a complex system of muscles from your abdomen, extending to your hips and pelvis and up to your shoulders. This is made up of deep abdominal and back muscles, including the pelvic floor and diaphragm. These muscles wrap around your trunk and act as a stabiliser to protect your spine and to allow for movement. They are your inner corset, and everyone needs to have good core strength, it allows you to move, breath and gives you good posture. Your core is also an energy transfer station, think of an over-arm bowler or a rower, they generate a huge amount of energy through their legs which then transfers up through their trunk and out through their arms. If they lacked core strength, it would be like sending all that energy through a cube of jelly. Core muscles are typically small; they are working all the time to keep you upright and stable. We spend a lot of time sitting in a forward slumped position (driving or sitting at a desk,) and, as a result, our core muscles can become weak and stretched and stop doing their job properly. An injury, or surgery, can also disrupt normal core muscle function. When you lose your trunk stability your body tries to stabilise elsewhere using big ‘strap’ muscles that extend across one or more joints, such as your hamstrings, at the back of your legs, or big muscles in your back, to hold you up, this can cause an imbalance in the body which can then lead to pain and more injury. A few simple Pilates exercises, such as the ‘100’, done in a class or at home, can keep your core strong and effective. The secret is not how

many you do but doing them well with proper, safe technique. That is why it is important to learn how to do the exercises correctly. Try too hard and you can override your smaller core muscles and fire up the big guns in your legs and back, leaving you unbalanced and prone to injury. With a little bit of regular practice, you

can get good core strength, which will support you in your daily activities, preventing pain and making it easier to move A nice side effect of having good core strength is it also gives you a great shape, leaner longer muscles and a flatter abdomen, plus help you breathe and move more efficiently. Ellerslie Cricket Club Junior Development Programme Launched

Junior Skills Programme Manager, Anthony Bowler and Life Member and Programme Co-ordinator, Mark Benefield.

Ellerslie Cricket Club is launching a new junior development programme this summer, targeting 5 -7 year-old boys and girls living in Ellerslie and the surrounding suburbs. The programme is based on the Fundamental Movement Skills programme and children will develop their cricket, movement and technical skills through fun games and activities. These skills can also be incorporated into day-to-day life and transferred to other sporting codes. The programme is endorsed and supported by New Zealand Cricket and will be led by ECC’s former Premier coach, Anthony Bowler, who is a New Zealand Cricket Level 3 certified coach, alongside ECC Life Member Mark Benefield and a team of other highly trained, experienced coaches. Mr Bowler, who also works for Auckland Cricket, is looking forward to coaching in the Junior Club and is encouraged by the enthusiasm and interest generated by the Cricket World Cup, earlier this year. “It was exciting to see so many families with young children attending World Cup matches at Eden Park last summer and I’m pleased our new Junior Development Programme will provide opportunities for more young children to learn how to play cricket”. Sessions will be held on Friday evenings from 5.30 – 7.00pm at the Ellerslie Domain. The programme runs over two seven week blocks beginning on November 6 and resuming again on February 5. The full programme costs $100, but children can also sign up at any time (prorata) and families are encourage to pop down to the Domain any Friday evening to join in a FREE session. For further information and to register, visit: www.ellersliecricket.co.nz

Girl Power! The Junior Girls Programme at the Ellerslie Cricket Club is going from strength to strength under the watchful eye of Programme Manager David Woolford. He credits this to the attractive competition format run by Auckland Cricket on Saturday mornings at Melville Park in Epsom. Girls only teams start at an Under 10 level with teams of 8 girls playing 16 over matches. All players bat, field, bowl and wicket keep using a soft ball without pads. “The Under 10 and Under 12 soft ball competitions are a great way to introduce girls to the game of cricket in a fun and relaxed environment. Melville Park is a beautiful setting, the parents get to sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and the games are over in an hour and a half. It is wonderful to see girls from many different schools join forces and form great friendships while learning and enjoying a new sport” - David Woolford. For information contact David Woolford at girls@ellersliecricket.co.nz. Registrations are open all season.

In a thoroughly seasonal timbre, some of the city’s finest young brass players will provide backings and fanfares in true mediaeval style for traditional carols. The beautiful contemporary music of John Rutter will take a well-deserved place alongside other popular classics, such as a superb choral and orchestral arrangement of O Holy Night. We are delighted to welcome Terence Maskell in his role as director of the Male Voice Chorale and Mixed Voice Chamber Choir of One Tree Hill College. Our conductor, Diana Williams-Rhodes expects this to be a concert

Friends of the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra Our Friday mornings in the Ellerslie War Memorial Hall seem to be getting better and better. In early October, we were entertained magnificently by two members of the Orchestra and a third player, who form a group known as “Ace Brass Trio”. They light-heartedly talked about their instruments and their musical careers, and played superbly, showing us how gentle and lyrical trumpet, horn and trombone can be. This was followed by the most interesting interview with Henning Kraggerud, who had played the Bruch violin concerto with the orchestra the previous night. As he never goes anywhere without his violin, crafted in the mid-1700s, he was able and willing to play for us. Our first Friday in November was equally

34

memorable, although somewhat sadder, as we farewelled Eckerhard Steir who has been the musical director for the Orchestra for seven years. As well as being an extremely talented classical musician maestro, Steir is a brilliant jazz pianist and we were given a glimpse into this side of his life. Our final morning for this year will be on Wednesday 25 November at 10.30am. We are hoping this will be quite spectacular and I think that people living in the area will find they may know some of the people who will be performing for us. If you would like to be part of these mornings, become a ‘friend’ and help us to support our orchestra. You may attend any of these meetings as a visitor for the small fee of $15.00, which includes a finger food lunch. However,

if you are a member, you will receive a programme each six months which will give you the dates and details of each meeting. The door fee for members is only $12 and includes lunch. For more information ring Bryce Bartley on 580 1964. We look forward to meeting you on 25 November and wish you all a Merry Christmas and a musical next year.

Ellerslie Combined Probus Club Your Probus Club has had some very enjoyable events during the last three month, one of the highlights being the fact that we have attracted even more new members. This is very encouraging for our committee and makes us feel we are doing something right. Keep on bringing your friends along, so they can experience a Friday morning in the Ellerslie War Memorial Hall at 10.00 am, or an outing. We are happy to see them at a couple of meetings before we ask them to join. That way they can be sure that Probus is for them, before actually joining and paying the subscription, which is only $15 per year, plus a one off joining fee of $10. For those of you who are reading about Probus for the first time, we meet on the third Friday of each month, from February to November, at the Ellerslie War Memorial Hall at 10.00 am. On the fourth Friday of

each month we usually go out to gardens, museums, tenpin bowling, factories and many other different places. The cost and timing of these days varies and mostly include lunch before we return to Ellerslie, between 2 and 3 pm. If you are newly retired, or new to the area, this is a very easy way to meet your neighbours. Our last meeting for 2015 was on 20 November when we had a very pleasant early Christmas lunch. Our next meeting will be on 22 January when we will have an informal lunch. The venue has not been decided yet, but if you are thinking of joining Probus and would like to meet us in January, ring Rona on 579 7605. In the meantime, we wish everyone a very happy Christmas and a bright new year to follow when at least some of your hopes will come to fruition.

Ellerslie Rotary Club New School Reading Programme a Great Success

Ellerslie Theatrical Society We have just concluded our final successful production on stage for 2015. The ‘Playboy of the Western World’ by J. M. Synge was well received by our audience. We will end our successful year with a float in the Ellerslie Christmas Parade on 6 December. Now is not too early to be thinking of Christmas presents, or even birthday presents, for friends and family who have birthdays between now and March 2016. We have created a gift package consisting of one ticket for each of the four plays we will produce this year, together with one glass of wine, beer, or soft drink of your choice, for half price on each of the four nights your friends attend. The cost of this gift is $88. The full price would be $124 which means that one night of good theatre will be free. You could even give yourself a present! Seats can be booked now for the whole year, or as each play comes up, by ringing Rona on 525 3336. The first play of the year, 10 to 19 March 2016, will be ‘The End of the Golden Weather’, written by Bruce Mason and adapted by Raymond Hawthorne. It will be directed by Julian Harrison. Each play we present requires a set. Sometimes simple with few components, but often we need to build walls, doors and windows. Naturally some of these components are used many times, which saves the considerable cost of buying new materials for each set. This is how you may be able to help. We need to store these items when they are not actually on stage. Do you, or perhaps your friends, have an unused garage or shed, preferably water-tight, that we could use for this purpose? Again, please ring the Theatre if you can help on 525 3336. In the meantime, we wish you a very Merry Christmas and look forward to your support for our upcoming productions in 2016. Don’t forget to visit our website www.ellerslietheatre.co.nz.

Stanhope Road School reading help programme Members of Ellerslie Rotary Club with a little free time on their hands, in the middle of the week, have taken on a new community project – reading and being read to by the young pupils at Stanhope Road School. And it’s proving very rewarding for both the pupils and their tutors. The Rotary Club has a strong commitment to supporting the local community and this includes working where we can with a couple of local schools. At Stanhope Road School we already fund a minibus, which is used to transport children on trips. Then, the principal

contacted us to discuss the possibility of taking part of a reading programme. Club members jumped at the opportunity and now a group comes to the school every Wednesday in term time. Club President, Grant Hunter, says that it’s a small but significant way that we can give to the community and fulfils our goal to “Feel good doing good”. If you would like to learn more about the work of the Ellerslie Rotary Club and how you could become a member, please contact Annabel Lush on 021 738 990 or a.lush@xtra.co.nz

U3A Ecology field trip Members of the Ecology group, from Remuera U3A, have recently enjoyed two field trips. The September trip was to Pukorokoro Miranda Shorebird Centre, at Miranda, to learn about bird migration. Then, onto the tidal flats and mangroves to see the first of the Godwits return for the summer season. The October trip was to Cue Haven, on the South Kaipara. This is a restoration project aimed to turn the 23 hectare property into a native wetland and forest reserve for the community to enjoy. Both trips were greatly enjoyed by all. The Ecology group is just one of the 21 study groups available for our ‘retiree’ members, at Remuera U3A, and it is typical of many of our groups in that it is a mix of people with expert knowledge and those for whom ecology is a whole new subject that they are keen to explore. Our Random Outings this month, another interest group, have included - for our opera enthusiasts - a very enjoyable performance of Tosca, while another group had an evening of wine and cheese and also a visit to learn about the Stars at the Auckland Stardome. Remuera U3A (University of the Third Age) members enjoy top speakers at monthly meetings, interesting study groups, friendship and above all the opportunity to keep the brain cells active and stimulated. Our members have opportunities to engage in further learning, exploration, friendship and fun. Ellerslie Tai Chi Tai Chi classes begin again for the 12th year on Wednesday 13 January. Local resident and Tai Chi teacher Alison Thomas explains why Tai Chi can provide so many benefits for you. Staying healthy with Tai Chi: Tai Chi is often described as ‘meditation in motion’ but might as well be called ‘medication in motion’. This ‘gentle form of exercise’ can prevent, or rehabilitate, many conditions commonly associated with age. Tai Chi differs from other forms of exercise: The Tai Chi movements are usually circular and never forced, the muscles are relaxed rather than tensed, the joints are not fully extended or bent, and the connective tissues are not stretched. Tai Chi can be easily adapted for any fitness level. No pain, big gains: Although Tai Chi is slow and gentle it doesn’t leave you breathless. Tai Chi addresses the key components of fitness, muscle strength,

flexibility and balance, and to a lesser degree aerobic conditioning. It strengthens both the lower and the upper limbs and also the core muscles of the back and abdomen. Balance: The ability to sense the position of one’s body in space declines with age. Practicing Tai Chi helps you to pay attention or ‘listen’ to the

signals you give to your body. Ellerslie Tai Chi classes are held on: Mondays 11-12pm, at Leicester Hall. Wednesdays 1011am at Leicester Hall, Tuesdays at 6-7pm at the Steiner House. Contact Alison: 021 528 744, or email alison. taichi@gmail.com

One Tree Hill College An Outstanding Year for One Tree Hill College

This year One Tree Hill College celebrated its 60th year of providing quality education to the community and it has been another year of outstanding student achievement and success. Our unwavering emphasis on student achievement continues to make a real difference and earlier this year, the Education Review Office (ERO) placed the college on the maximum 4-5 year review cycle. This is certainly glowing endorsement of the excellent teaching and learning evident across the school. As always, our students are the stars of this school and this year they have not only excelled academically, but also in the performing arts and sports arena. As a college we are continuing to turn heads in everything we are doing and have experienced some major highlights again in 2015. Following on from our excellent 2014 NCEA results, this year we have many entries into NZQA Scholarship Examinations – the pinnacle of achievement in New Zealand schools. This high level of attainment is testament to the high quality teaching and learning programmes on offer at One Tree Hill College. Equally as exciting, was the recent news that two One Tree Hill College students have been selected as nominees for Auckland Sport Young Sportsperson of the Year. I wish to congratulate both Dallas Tagaloasa and Maddison Roy, who have represented New Zealand in volleyball and softball respectively this year.

38

We are still enrolling students for 2016 and interest is very high from families within our local area. There are very limited places available for students who live out of zone – please refer to our website for the college’s enrolment scheme. We invite all families wishing to enrol their children for 2016 to contact the college reception on 579-5049 to make an appointment. As always, I would welcome any

interested members of our community who wish to take a tour of the college to contact me to arrange an opportunity for me to show you around our college. I wish you all a happy and safe Christmas and New Year! N Coughlan Principal

Looking Outward into Our Community At Michael Park School, we consider the values of community and social responsibility as significant, along with collegiality, individual integrity and service leadership. Michael Park School has been a participant in the Trees for Survival programme for ten years. With the help of our sponsor, Novotel/ Ibis Greenlane, seedlings are raised and tended to in our nursery. When they are strong enough to plant, our Year 6 students plant them in designated areas around Auckland. We have almost 2000 trees ready for planting each year. This initiative enables us to teach our students valuable skills in horticulture, as well as instilling in them a sense of community responsibility, both of which are very much in line with our ethos. Our emphasis on community encourages students to seek out opportunities for service leadership. At Year 9 and Year 13 levels, students complete an independent project that includes a community focus component. This year we have seen students volunteering at an orphanage in Sri Lanka, working at Hohepa homes for the disabled, coaching younger sports teams, fostering kittens, volunteering for Greenpeace and providing beach safety education, among other community-minded initiatives. Sausage sizzles, bake sales and dressup days are always a hit with our students. We use these to raise funds and awareness for a number of charitable organisations, as well as an opportunity to add a bit of extra fun to our school day. Where possible, we have a representative from each charitable organisation speak to our students at assembly, to help them understand how their fundraising

Some of the causes we support each year include; • Wheels Day for Muscular Dystrophy • Pyjama Day for Starship Guardian Angels • Pink for a Day for Breast Cancer Awareness • Daffodil Day for the Cancer Society • World Play Day for Te Whakaora Tangata • Cupcake Day for the SPCA • 40-Hour Famine for World Vision • Morning Tea for Hospice • Canned food drive for the Sisters of Mercy Te Waipuna Puawai in Umere Crescent

• Non-perishable food and gifts to Auckland City Mission at Christmas At Michael Park School, we are very grateful to receive the support of numerous Ellerslie businesses who sponsor our annual Summer Fair, our Art in Action event, and who provide donations and support in other ways throughout the year. We are so glad to have the opportunity to give back to the community. Ellerslie School

As a busy and productive year at Ellerslie school reaches its last term, we reflect on those students from our Intermediate Team - many whom began as 5-year-olds in the junior school. Shortly, they will be

completing their primary education before moving to secondary institutions. This is their report on Term 4. Term Four awakens with promises of great things. A time to assess, reflect and celebrate how far we have come. Our focus – what makes a team strong? Initially we will be involved with hands-on problem solving challenges and team work opportunities, allowing the eight camp teams to discover and define their strengths and culture. With a focus on relating to others, we will be creating raps to represent what we stand for, as part of the NZ Ukulele Trust UKE-CAN RAP competition. Camp itself lies within week 6, and will be held at Camp Port Waikato – a scenic and tranquil establishment nestled beneath rolling hills and native bush. For the remainder of the term, we look inward and hope to strengthen ourselves individually by addressing cyber safety issues in association with the Life Education Van.

A big thank you from Ellerslie Playcentre was done has made a huge improvement in the appearance of our centre. Furthermore, the new bark that has been added to our playground and the work that was done on our centre’s fence has made sure our centre continues to be a safe and fun environment for our children. We are grateful for the strong connections Ellerslie Playcentre has with a wide range of community groups and the many people who

are willing to give up their time and energy in order to invest in our children. Ellerslie Playcentre is for children from birth to school age. We follow the early childhood curriculum set in the place by the Ministry of Education but with a Playcentre spin on it! Ellerslie Playcentre welcomes new families so, please email ellerslieplaycentre@hotmail.co.nz or visit our Facebook page for more information.

Ellerslie Kindergarten Grand Re-opening Originally built in 1981, Ellerslie Kindergarten has undergone a major renovation over the past six months. While the builders have been busy on site, the children and teachers have been hosted temporarily within the Horizon Church building. On Monday 2 November the kindergarten held their official re-opening, with a blessing, ribbon cutting, and performances from the Ellerslie Primary School kapa haka group. The kindergarten children also sang some waiata and all our families and guests enjoyed a delicious morning tea. The kindergarten was then opened on the 14 November for any former pupils, neighbours and the community to view the new building.

S

hinjuku rail station has over 200 exits, there are 6.8 million metro users daily, and every one of them is on their phone. Welcome to Japan. I join the swarm of thousands of black business suits spilling out of the station proper, toward one of the many exits, absolutely lost. I am heading toward Opera City and one of its many galleries. This is Tokyo, a sprawling place of thirty odd million people, all heading somewhere. My somewhere is the long walk from Opera City through the narrow backstreets (which give you an idea of how closely people live to each other, and how small the average house is) to Meiji Shrine and gardens. This is one of Tokyo’s green spots, a haven from the hustle and bustle of Shibuya, Ueno and any other spot you can name. This green area hosts a large shrine to one of the most respected emperors who brought Japan into the modern era. On the way I encounter the Tokyo Riding Club, with a small pony ride area, which seems to occupy such a luxurious amount of space within sight of the skyscrapers of Shinjuku and the famous Tokyo Tower. Beyond the peaceful shrine lies Harujuku and famous Takeshita Street and the big name shops and modern architecture of Omestando

and Shibuya. Takeshita Street is famous for its Japanese schoolgirls, home of the gaudy, kitsch and glam, but also famously Japanese crepes, superb candy floss and much more. Past this is Harajuku proper and it is again the backstreets that herald the best coffee, designer boutiques and galleries. Further on lies Roppongi, Ginza, Akihabara and so much more. Tokyo is such an alive city, much easier to get around than its metro map may suggest, safe and full of great food, art, culture and famous fish market. Worth a minimum of three days. From here I head to Kyoto, a mere two hours by bullet train, and while smaller by comparison, still boasts 1.5 million people. No small village, but jam packed with shrines, temples, lakes and gardens it is a seriously stunning place. Though, mark my words, it will take you ten minutes to walk through the train station. Not far from Kyoto is Arashiyama, home of a beautiful set of temples, that famous bamboo grove, one of the most beautiful

garden lake settings you will ever see, all set next to a riverbank replete with more temples and monkeys, if you care to do the walk. Don’t forget to stop for the famous local octopus balls, at one of the local vendors, on the way through and your day will be complete. Japan struck me as at once ordered, industrial, beautiful, and manageable, yet at the same time, providing plenty of challenges to those who need it. The food was amazing and extremely reasonable, and the transport was plentiful. I am excited at the prospect of returning next year, and at every opportunity. I recommend planning now for your visit for Rugby World Cup 2019, it is going to be amazing! Let House of Travel Ellerslie show you Japan, where it is a full tour, via a cruise or just a few nights as a stopover on the way to Europe. Glen Armstrong Owner Operator

Social Media Business Trends for 2016

Social media marketing has always been a peculiar animal. Since its early days, where platforms were finicky and critics insisted that social marketing was not a viable marketing strategy, we’re now witnesses to an era with rock-solid platforms, useful business advertising options, and plenty of free opportunities to make our content public. Still, the world of social media changes quickly, with dozens of new platforms arriving each year and most existing companies scrambling to stay ahead of the game with new features and innovations. If history and some recently emerging trends are any indication, 2016 will be a host for a variety of new trends and changes in the social scene. Here are my Top 5 predictions for 2016. (1) What was once considered something nice for a business to have – optimising your company’s website for mobile devices - has become a necessity and a valuable investment for the future. This past March marked the first time the four leading messaging apps in the world has amassed the same amount of users as the top four social networking platforms. More and more, shoppers are turning to using mobile devices like smartphones and tablets to research a product, comparing deals online, finding a retail outlet, and most importantly, making the purchase. (2) 2016 will see In-the-moment updates

dominate the competition. While Social media is already “in-the-moment” by it’s very nature, but there are some social media platforms that are more “in-the-moment” than others. Think Periscope and Snapchat, the new fascination with live-streaming and live social will continue strong in 2016. Increasingly, social media apps will aim to put their users at an event—virtually. (3) While Google still remains the king of SEO, the way that consumers search for services and products in 2016 will evolved passed simple SEO. In a recent study, Eighty-eight percent of consumers online are influenced by reviews and online comments by other consumers. Those consumers are going directly to sites like Facebook, YouTube or in apps like Trip Advisor. A reason for this shift is the growing popularity of Pinterest, helped by the fact that its market is largely dominated by women in their 30s with young families, a demographic known to do most of the shopping. In 2015 Twitter, Pinterest, and Facebook introduced Buy buttons, in 2016 you can expect to see other apps like Instagram, Snapchat, Vine and focus on making mobile and social commerce seamless. In-app innovation geared towards online shopping will likely be top of mind for anyone who wants to stay ahead of their competitors. By the end of 2016, most major social media brands will feature some kind of buy button naturally as an element of their advertising campaigns. (4) The use of videos for marketing purposes

has been steadily grow in 2016, and is set to explode in 2016. Videos are the perfect way to show how a product works. From the multiple ways it can be used for optimum results to how it resolves a daily issue, brands have started focussing on video content more than their text only content strategy. Expect to see a lot more of the ‘how to’ videos coming out in 2016. (5) Content remains the king for all businesses in online marketing. The truth is that if you are not updating your content regularly, Google will have to assume that your content is losing its reliability. So why not? Over time you will build up a great backlink profile by sheer longevity while at the same time keeping content as fresh as new competitors entering the space.
