MEGAN’S MESSAGE Goodness, how time flies! Last issue the summer holidays stretched out in front of us and now, it’s gone in a blink of any eye. My holidays were spent with family and timeless summer activities, like strawberry and blueberry picking, eating way too much ice-cream and lots of time spent in the water. Some of those activities have become summer traditions for us, and I bet my boys are hoping the eating ice-cream from the tub, while watching cricket, evolves into one!

Although I am not religious, Easter traditions have also become important to my family, as it is a time we all gather together. We have an egg hunt for the kids, a hotly contested egg decorating competition, which both adults and children take part in, and an egg throwing competition which is always good for a laugh.

I hope you have some Easter traditions to look forward to, whether they be as simple as hot cross buns for Sunday breakfast (try the Bakers Delight ones, absolutely delicious) or something more elaborate. If not, make this the year you start something.

By the time you read this the flag referendum will be underway. Whatever your position on the issue please make sure you vote. Though

the RSA may be officially siding with keeping our current flag, what they fought for in many wars was our democracy; please make sure you use that privilege. It’s something precious that many people of the world still wish for. If you haven’t made up your mind, both flags are flying at Harcourts Ellerslie, pop down and check them out.

Coming up in May, keep an eye out for ARTerslie. We hope to have some fresh new events and artworks to bring to Ellerslie.

Recently my wife Penny and I walked the Abel Tasman National Park from Totaranui to just north of Kaiteriteri. Wonderful food for the soul. It was one of our most enjoyable holidays.

The spectacular scenery, golden sand beaches, regenerating forest and beautiful bird-life make this a must for anyone’s bucket list.

How incredibly lucky we are to live in such a

beautiful country and what an amazing sense of community when we hear of all the contributors pledging small and large amounts of money, to try to preserve a piece of land at Awaroa, in the Abel Tasman National Park, for all to enjoy. The sense of community is alive and well, not just in Ellerslie but all of New Zealand.

Over the past few months many of you may have noticed walls being put up between the carpark on Findlay Street and the Rotary walkway, down beside Charlie Baxter’s. These were put in place by the Body Corporate, who own the carpark, due to pedestrian safety concerns. The Ellerslie Business Association felt that this was an important access way for many people and lobbied the Body Corporate to retain this as a public walkway. Fortunately, as this article goes to press, in late February, I am delighted to report that the Body Corporate have removed all remnants of the wall, patched up the scars and have painted a bright yellow line alerting people to the small step from the open car park to the Rotary Walkway.

Whilst the EBA has not had any communication from the Body Corporate, we perceive their actions as very positive. We ask, in turn, that people are considerate in their usage of this carpark as a walkway access and treat it with respect remembering it is private property.

ORAKEI LOCAL BOARD

2016 has started with a contentious issue around the Unitary Plan. Just prior to Christmas, Auckland Council released new maps and rules updating their position for the residential zones. Many Orakei ward ratepayers are upset as many of these changes have not been made as a result of consultation.

The main differences for the suburb of Ellerslie between the consulted on version and the new council evidence to the Independent Hearings Panel include; • The area north of Marua Rd, most of which

was single house in the consulted version now becomes mixed housing suburban in the revised map. This change appears to be an “out of scope change” i.e. not based on any submissions.

• Pukerangi Crescent which changes from Mixed Housing Suburban to Mixed Housing Urban – again, not based on any submission.

• Amy Street (West) – changes from Terraced Housing and Apartments to Mixed Housing.

• There are a number of other changes in Umere Crescent (not based on submissions) others on the corner of Morrin Rd and Robert St, and more in the area on the northern part of Michael’s Ave. Because the up-zoned position was removed from the council website midJanuary, and because significant variations were made to properties within the ward, without consultation or notification, the board worked with local residents’ associations to hold a ward-wide public meeting. The meeting helped our community understand what changes were made behind closed doors, the legality of these changes and what they could do to voice their opinion and influence the decision-makers. Councillors Denise Krum and Cameron Brewer have been very supportive of our push for openness and transparency, and we thank them for that. Please contact your

residents’ association or the Orakei Local Board office if you need an update on your property or the council’s position.

All parts of council are required to have a collective plan in place that outlines our prioritised activities and projects, intended service levels, and funding and financial policy information for the coming year. This document is known as the Annual Plan. Consultation on the Draft Annual Plan for 2016/17 took place between 15 February and 15 March, and was an opportunity for Aucklanders to contribute their ideas on both regional and local projects before decisions on priorities and budgets were made.

In the heart of Ellerslie is Michaels Ave, and results are now in on the Michaels Ave Reserve Master Plan consultation, which was held in November 2015. Two major options were up for consideration. These focused on playground location and the shared path route through the reserve. Over half of the submissions received were made by locals with 93 per cent noting they were weekly users of the park.

The outcome will be decided by the board in April 2016.

ORAKEI LOCAL BOARD Local MP Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga

The Auckland City Rail Link Some in Ellerslie will be pleased the Government is formalising its commitment to the City Rail Link sooner. Regardless, we need to remember at this stage it will not be a 50/50 Government/Auckland Council funded project as Mayor Len Brown tries his best to imply. In reality the total project funding split remains 40/60 Government/Auckland Council.

The council’s 2015-2025 budget forecasts assume the Government will commit $1.039b and the council will fund $1.490b – taking the total capital expenditure cost to $2.529b. This is largely because the current assumption is that the Government will not contribute to the costly three-year ‘enabling works’ the council started last year.

Ratepayers need to be fully aware the Government’s renewed commitment is for the main construction works from 2018. The Prime Minister has made that explicitly clear in his speech in January.

The cost of the enabling works at the bottom of town until then falls entirely on ratepayers simply because Mr Brown started the project without the Government. That is a huge failure. Let’s hope the costs for the current enabling works don’t blow out as that tab is for ratepayers to pick up alone.

Let’s not also forget that in 2005 the City Rail Link was reported to cost from $500m. By 2010 it hit $2 billion and despite dropping Newton Station it’s now forecast to cost over $2.5 billion. Given the expected cost went up five-fold over the past decade, rest assured there will be more cost escalation over the next decade.

Cost containment of this massive project must be a priority.

Council’s operational budget forecasts also show the City Rail Link will require an over $100m operational subsidy each and every year – and that’s after receiving NZTA subsidies and passenger farebox revenue.

With formalising a business case now a joint-priority, also expect a renewed push from some to introduce the likes of widespread motorway tolls to help pay for the CRL. This issue has major impacts for Ellerslie because when you toll the likes of the Southern Motorway, drivers will head to our free arterial roads and suburban streets. Some serious traffic modelling on the local impact of tolls needs to be conducted first and foremost.

It is good to be back in 2016 serving as your local MP. I trust that you have all had some quality time with family and friends over the Christmas/New Year break.

This is a good time of the year to reflect on the events of 2015 and look forward to the opportunities and positive changes we can all make in 2016.

As always the end of last year was a busy time as your local MP. I attended a number of local events including prizegivings at St Mary’s School and Ellerslie School. I wish all our students a successful 2016 especially those moving on to higher education and jobs.

I attended a number of Christmas functions within our area including Ellerslie and Panmure Christmas parades, and the Maungarei Community Church Glow in the Park. Locally I continue to take part in the Ellerslie Community Patrol and encourage you to join as we still need more volunteers.

The Prime Minister announced the government’s decision to fast-track the East-West Connection roading project. This project which runs across the Mt Wellington–Penrose area is recognised as one of national importance. Bringing forward its construction will improve the ability of businesses in the area to grow leading to more jobs in our local area. Local residents will enjoy reduced traffic jams, as well as improved access public transport, walking and cycling lanes.

I have worked alongside local councillors Denise Krum and Cameron Brewer and the Ellerslie Residents’ Association to promote stronger transport links in the area so it is pleasing to see this progress.

In 2016 I look forward to my new role as Minister for Local Government. I will work alongside local councils to improve the lives of all New Zealanders. I believe the sector is delivering some services well. However, there is an opportunity for local government to make a greater contribution to economic growth, flourishing cities and better standards of living. I aim to promote Better Local Services by introducing new legislation that makes it easier for councils to work together to provide more effective services for their communities. I support efficient, tailormade, regional solutions to our big infrastructure challenges. This should enable councils to work together to deliver better local services for their ratepayers.

At present it is difficult for functions and responsibilities to either be shared or transferred across local and regional councils. Technology is driving new solutions for councils to work across boundaries. However, there needs to be rules and regulations to allow councils greater freedom to choose how they do so.

Finally, the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA) was recently signed in Auckland. It is New Zealand’s largest free trade agreement, with the 12 members of the TPP representing 36% of the global economy. Free trade agreements benefit New Zealanders by eliminating barriers to exporters, such as tariffs. It is estimated that the total benefit to New Zealand’s GDP is $2.7 billion a year by 2030. Improving access to international markets is part of the Government’s wider plan to create a stronger economy, with more jobs and higher incomes for New Zealanders. This leads to stronger families and communities.

Santa Parade 2015 On Sunday 6 December, Ellerslie turned out in force for Auckland’s best town centre Santa Parade. Once again we were blessed with beautiful weather and had a hugely successful parade filled with community groups, volunteers and local businesses. The streets were lined with families enjoying the festivities and it was wonderful to see so many happy faces. A huge thanks goes to all of those who give their time and volunteer to make this community event happen, especially the Ellerslie Community Arts Trust, Wendy Sadd and Rob Pollard, who give their time year after year. This parade wouldn’t happen without our funding partners NZCT, Mt Wellington Foundation, Trillian Trust, Lion Foundation, Orakei Local Board and the Ellerslie Business Association. We are very grateful for their support.

MEGAN’S RECIPE

Chopped Autumn Salad

The first time I made this salad was for a big gathering of friends, one of whom is a meat loving male, who only really eats salad at the insistence of his more health conscious wife. He loved it so much he went back for seconds. It’s also won over my son who usually hates lettuce – his comment when I expressed my surprise at his second helping? “Well Mum, it’s got bacon in it!!!!!!”

Although pears are at their peak in autumn you can make this salad all year round, substituting apples if needed and it’s great for a crowd.

Ingredients: 1 large iceberg lettuce 2 medium pears chopped 1 cup cranberries 1 cup roasted almonds – chopped 250g bacon - diced and fried till crispy 100 – 150g feta, crumbled.

Dressing: 2 tablespoons lemon juice 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar 1 tablespoons Dijon mustard ½ cup olive oil 2 tablespoons poppy seeds

Method: Chop the lettuce and pears into small pieces and scatter over a large platter. Sprinkle the cranberries, almonds and bacon on top, followed by the crumbled feta. Toss lightly to mix the feta through.

To make the dressing, add all ingredients to a jar and shake well. Pour dressing over salad immediately before serving; you probably won’t need all of it.

Smart Singular

Expressions From a global perspective, New Zealand’s wine growing regions are very young. With around 30 years of recent winemaking now under our belt, in winemaking terms you could say that we’ve moved into our teenage years as an industry, having worked our way through the early days, those toddler years when we started to ‘walk’ and headed overseas with our wines. Today’s industry now has much more knowledge, there’s an increasing maturity in vine age and a confidence that see’s us ready for the next stage.

Initially, most of the focus has been on each region as a whole, Central Otago, Marlborough, Gisborne and so on. With more vine age and a greater understanding of each region, the last few years have seen much exploration into the sub regional aspects of each; learning the unique expressions and vast number of sub regions within our big winemaking areas. If you look to the great winemaking regions of the world, particularly Burgundy, where Pinot Noir and Chardonnay find their homes, the focus is much more on Single Vineyards and the quality of each. It’s this singular vineyard expression that we are starting to see more of in New Zealand and, putting to one side the proliferation of labels that results, it’s a good thing.

The team at Mud House know a thing or two about great quality and have recently added to their single vineyard range. The latest addition, the Dambuster Pinot Noir, is from, no, not Central Otago, but from Marlborough. Marlborough actually has the largest planting of Pinot Noir in New Zealand. You can be forgiven for not thinking of Marlborough in terms of quality Pinot Noir; historically much of the Pinot Noir has not achieved the quality of other New Zealand Pinot regions, though there’s always been the top producers fl ying the flag. With vine age, an understanding of the region and much investment into top Marlborough Pinot Noir, the number of quality Pinot Noir coming from Marlborough is impressive and Dambuster would have to be one of my favourites.

By Dawn French Genre: Chick-lit/Humour Who’s it aimed at: Women (mainly) Comedienne and author (A Tiny Bit Marvellous and Oh Dear Silvia) returns with another very entertaining easy-to-read novel in which it’s all too easy to imagine French’s expert sense of delivery and timing.

The novel revolves around Rosie Kitto, a teacher disillusioned and bored with her job, who decides to throw it all in and travel to New York, where she becomes the nanny to a stereotypical NY urban rich, but highly dysfunctional family. Rosie though, is a ‘people-pleaser’ a girl who likes to say ‘yes’ and her desire to please everyone all the time has a habit of backfiring.

If you are looking for the depth and detail of a Bronté sister’s novel then this (definitely) isn’t for you. If, however, you like French’s humour and Vicar of Dibly-esque personalities then this is a must-read. Sure, the characters are somewhat lacking in depth, clichéd even, and we’ve heard and seen their type in books and movies before, but it is French’s quirky, witty and honest style that keeps it interesting and fun.

When the house has one appeal and the owners want another for their new central kitchen, it can be tricky to merge the two and achieve overall harmony. Sometimes, broad design strokes are required.

This sleek entertainer’s kitchen forms the social hub of a large, open-plan living space. Morgan Cronin of Cronin Kitchens says the clients had asked for a unique, modern, minimal, clean-cut kitchen.

“As this was quite a departure from the home’s generally traditional feel, the challenge was to enhance rather than

contrast that aesthetic.”

The owners’ pre-purchased stainless steel appliances – two glass-door beverage fridges, a French-door refrigerator and 76cm oven – were also to be incorporated.

“To start with we made a modest alteration to the building envelope,” says Cronin. “By moving one wall out over an existing deck area, the shape of the room was significantly improved and additional space was freed up for the large scullery.

“In terms of colour, black makes a bold statement and works well with the existing Rimu floors, windows and trim – as well as the shiny stainless steel appliances. The minimalist black-on-black tones also give the kitchen its modern, clean look.”

However, it’s the contrast in materials – black steel, black glass, black stone and black-stained oak – that provides the kitchen’s warm, tactile appearance.

The long metal-faced island draws the eye and is a feature of the design.

“The steel table frame, with its open seating area and fine legs, reduces the impact this large island has on the space. Plus this particular configuration gives ample bench space and seating and keeps it in proportion to the room’s size,” the designer says.

I lived in Ellerslie for a year, during which time I applied for the role as a fitness supervisor at the Ellerslie YMCA. I recently moved out to Waiuku, because my partner now works in Hamilton, originally I’m from Mangere.

What do you like best about Ellerslie?

Its great working here as the community are very friendly and understanding.

From a logistical standpoint, it is fairly central so it’s easy to travel to different places, as long as it’s not in peak hour traffic!

I took over management of Glengarry Ellerslie in mid November 2015, after the previous manager Devender, took leave to go back to India. Previous to that I worked in marketing, based in the Trends Building, on Main Highway, and so would often frequent Ellerslie Village for lunch.

What do you like best about Ellerslie?

It’s got a great feeling about it, lovely locals and some really exciting new businesses opening their doors here.

Don’t put it off like I did…

A childhood accident (and inconsiderate orthodontics) had left my front teeth uneven and ugly, causing me much embarrassment and affecting my self esteem for over 20 years.

After all, I figured I had nothing to lose – I had been quoted $11,000 and major surgery to give me two ‘new’ front teeth by my previous dentist.

To be honest, I didn’t expect any improvement from the initial consultation with Angela. What type of exercise is the best route to a 6-pack, or at least a lean sculpted body?

An individual weight training programme, with appropriate sets and repetitions, will give you muscle bulk, shape and gross strength.

Resistance training focuses on ‘maxing out’ your muscles and it is normal to try to isolate muscle groups and work them individually, taking these muscles to fatigue. You should allow time for recovery between sessions.

A personalised Pilates programme is a submaximal workout, which will work your whole body, challenging core control, symmetry and muscle balance. After a session you should feel relaxed and energised. As the exercises work your muscles in tandem you are lengthening as you strengthen, therefore an extra stretching programme should not be necessary.

Lloyd Sabin and Dinesh De Silva are enjoying the summer in Auckland

Ellerslie Cricket Club Premier team bolstered by overseas professionals Securing the services of two English cricketers has proved very beneficial for the Ellerslie Cricket Club this season.

Thirty-one-year-old Dinesh De Silva is the Club’s Player/Coach and with fifty first class games in Sri Lanka, ten years as a professional cricketer in the United Kingdom, as well as representative honours for Sri Lanka, in indoor cricket, his skills and experience have been invaluable.

Mr De Silva is impressed with the skill level and commitment required to play Premier cricket in Auckland but says that playing on artificial wickets is a new experience for him.

He believes that NZ cricketers start their careers at a young age and take it quite seriously, compared to children in the UK, and he thinks this is a promising sign of a very successful future for cricket in New Zealand.

He is heavily involved with the Club’s junior players and coaches boys and girls across all levels of skills and abilities.

This is the answer we hear most often to the question, “Why do you play football?” They are playing our sport because they love it.

Every year we have many kids showing up wanting to play football for the first time. It is very important to us at Ellerslie AFC that their first experience in the game, be a lasting, memorable and enjoyable one. This is why our club’s philosophy is based on allowing the players to be creative, develop their skills and enjoy the game in an environment that is designed to allow these to occur.

Their first experience in the game is the most important one.

It could potentially be the day they fall in love with the game they will play for the rest of their life. With all the positives around being involved in sport, especially a team sport, we view this as a vital opportunity to get it right and ensure these players first real football experience is one they leave the fields excited about and eager to come back for more.

Many of the first time experiences in football at our club come through our Holiday Programs. We run these at the start of all four terms of the school year. Having just recently finished our first of the year, at the end of January, we already have sign-ups for our next holiday program.

Our Holiday Program is coached mainly by our youth coaching staff, who range in age from 13 to 20-years-old. The focus of the program is on the players having fun and falling in love with the game, the same way these youth coaches did many years ago.

The coaches know that their attitude throughout the sessions is very important, not only to the success of the session, but also to the enjoyment of the players in their group. Showing up each day with a big smile on their face, ready to meet their players, bringing a lot of enthusiasm and a lot of patience are what keeps the kids coming back every term.

The next Holiday Program begins on Monday, 18 April and goes until Thursday, 21 April. The session is from 9.00am - 12.00pm each day and is held at Michaels Avenue turf fields, at the Michaels Avenue Reserve. The program is open to all players 5 to 16-yearsold, both boys and girls. There will also be one Holiday Program each week of the July school holidays this year.

Ellerslie Tennis Club Anyone for Tennis?

Ellerslie Tennis Club has a busy programme ahead to complete the second part of the tennis season.

Senior interclub takes place every fortnight and club tournaments will be played on the rest of the Saturdays. Social Tennis is still well enjoyed on Tuesday evenings from 6.00pm until dark, and on Monday evenings a tightly contested interclub takes place with two Ellerslie teams entered.

Ellerslie has had excellent results for Senior Interclub, having only one loss over both teams, when Ellerslie 1 team defeated the Ellerslie 2 team in a closely contested competition.

Senior Tennis plays throughout the winter

months, on Saturday afternoons, with a winter night interclub, usually played at the Edendale Tennis Club. Also available, at no cost to members, an indoor court is hired at the Scarbro Centre Merton Road, Glen Innes this is booked one night a week.

Junior Tennis takes place on Saturday mornings from 8.30am - 11.00am with expert coaching and dedicated help from parents and some senior members. Junior club championships are being played throughout the season. The juniors are having mixed results with their interclub this season. They will be completing their season at the end of March.

Friends of the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra Come and meet our friendly group Already nearly one quarter of 2016 has slipped by but the Friends of the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra wish you well for the rest of the year.

Our first Friday morning meeting, in the Ellerslie War Memorial Hall, was at 10.30am on 26 February. We had a delightful discussion with pianist Dejan Lazic and as usual very enjoyable music from talented young players at the beginning of their careers.

Our next Friday morning will be 1 April at 10.30am when Richard Gill will speak with us.

He conducts the ‘Unwrap the Music’ nights the APO hosts each year and is an extremely enthusiastic and entertaining speaker. There will also be music from some of our amazingly talented young people.

These mornings all conclude with a finger food lunch. The fee for these mornings is $15

for visitors and $12 for members. The meetings are open to anyone who is interested in classical music, so come along and experience one. You may enjoy it so much you will feel compelled to join, so you will receive a copy of our programme for the next six months and know when the next meeting, which you will not want to miss. The subscription is only $30 per year all of which goes to help our magnificent orchestra.

Another busy year ahead

Tai Chi for older adults is taught in Ellerslie

by Alison Thomas, with classes being held on Monday’s 11.00-12.00pm and Wednesday’s 10.00-11.00am at 20 Findlay St, Leicester Hall and Tuesday’s 6.00-7.00pm at 104 Michaels Ave, Steiner House. Anyone can practice Tai Chi, either sitting or standing.

Tai Chi benefits: Helps release of stress, promotes deeper breathing, reduces bone density loss in postmenopausal women, and improves lower body and leg strength. It also helps with arthritis pain, reduces blood pressure, requires mind body coordination through mental imagery, accumulates energy - by releasing endorphins rather than depleting them - enhances mental capacity and concentration. For many people one key benefit is that Tai Chi also improves balance and stability, by strengthening ankle and knee joints.

These specific benefits are further helped by also promoting faster recovery from strokes and heart attacks, improves conditions of Alzheimer’s, Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson’s.

Ellerslie Rotary Club members were out in force during the Ellerslie Santa Parade, last December, dressed as Santa elves on and around our float, which highlighted many of the local projects we are involved in. The parade is a wonderful way to show Ellerslie residents what we do, while having fun at a great local event.

After a break over Christmas the club is now well and truly back and already very busy. Activities have included celebrating the opening of the new library at Bailey Road School and members taking part in the Ellerslie Community Patrol (which we help fund).

We are also working very closely with other New Zealand Rotary Clubs, in supporting Fiji in any way we can after the devastation of Cyclone Winston. During the year we will volunteer to pack ERKs (Emergency Response Kits) which can quickly be sent to affected areas.

NZ Police Keep safe when out and about After the very sad and tragic murder recently in Remuera, people have been understandably asking me questions about their safety when they’re out and about and what they can do to avoid such incidents.

Firstly, please take note that such incidents, where a random person has been murdered by someone they don’t know, are extremely rare in New Zealand and you shouldn’t change your recreational behaviour as a result.

Hopefully the following information can be of some value and prevent any further incidents within the community: Walking alone at night • Where possible, always keep to well-lit areas.

• Keep bags containing valuables, wallets, purses etc close to your body • Keep your cell phone where you can reach it.

• Walk close to the gutter, not beside shop doorways.

• Walk facing the traffic.

If you think someone is following you • Keep looking ahead and walk briskly.

• Cross the road and see if they follow.

• If they do, go to the nearest place where there are people.

• Dial 111 and ask for Police.

If a driver stops and asks you for directions

• Be polite but stay out of reach.

• If you don’t trust them, walk away quickly in the opposite direction.

• Don’t accept a lift from a stranger.

What to do if you are attacked Try to escape and get to safety. Then dial 111 and ask for Police.

Unless it is absolutely necessary to defend yourself to avoid harm, the best thing to do is to move away, avoid a confrontation, call Police and provide them with a good description.

You may use force to defend yourself, but force needs to be reasonable. Self-defence skills need to be practiced and you can do this by taking part in a self-defence course.

The law relating to self-defence “Everyone is justified in using, in the defence of himself or another, such force as, in the circumstances as he believes them to be, it is reasonable to use.” (Section 48 of the Crimes Act 1961.)

This means you are allowed to defend yourself from attack, but use your common sense. The idea is to defend yourself, not to cause injury or get revenge. If you use unreasonable force, you are committing a crime.

Your first concern should always be for your

own safety and that of others with you. Never take the law into your own hands or take unnecessary risks.

Keep safe in your car • Park in well-lit, busy areas.

• Always lock your parked car.

• Keep windows up and doors locked when you’re driving.

• Don’t pick up hitchhikers, especially if you’re travelling alone.

• If other motorists seem to be in trouble, think carefully before you stop and help.

• If people try to block your way, drive on slowly and carefully and keep the doors locked.

• If your own car breaks down, sit inside it with the doors locked. If you have a cell phone you can call a friend or AA Roadside assistance – call 0800 500 222 or *222 from your mobile.

Roadside assistance is available to AA members, or can you pay and join over the phone from the roadside.

• If other motorists offer you a lift, talk to them through a slightly opened window.

• Only if you feel safe, take a lift to a place with people and lights, such as a service station.

One Tree Hill College Ongoing success and celebrations

Principal Nick Coughlan and 2015 Dux Ariel Abiad Welcome to another exciting year at One Tree Hill College. The year has already started very well with another big intake of Year 9 students, most of which are from our local community.

The roll is now at capacity and our enrolment scheme is assisting us to prioritise families wishing to enrol children from our community.

I am very proud to be able to inform our community that our 2015 NCEA results were outstanding. Over 80% of students achieved their NCEA Level 1 and 2, with very close to

80% of our Year 13 students achieving their NCEA Level 3. This, along with a very high percentage of students achieving merit and excellence endorsements in NCEA, continue to highlight the high quality teaching and learning taking place at One Tree Hill College.

In addition to these outstanding achievement levels, I am also excited to announce that students at One Tree Hill College achieved seven NZQA Scholarships – this is the highest level of achievement possible across New Zealand. In particular, I would like to mentioned, our 2015 Dux Literrarum, Ariel Abiad, who achieved Scholarships across six subjects – Physics, Biology, English, Statistics, Calculus, and Music.

I would like to congratulate the many students who achieved so highly. To succeed at these levels are outstanding achievements and we are all very proud of these students. We have honoured these students at our annual Scholars Assembly with ‘Academic Excellence’ awards and challenge all other students to emulate their success this year.

Throughout the school, students have access to a rich curriculum of outdoor education, outdoor classroom, crafts, music, circus, drama and eurhythmy (expressive movement art) as well as the traditional and academic subjects provided at other schools. Students are also involved in many aspects of school life from gardening to environmental care, festivals, community events, peer support and much more. Our music programme provides the opportunity for every middle school student to play an instrument. Michael Park School continues to achieve outstanding success in several sporting disciplines, especially lacrosse and basketball.

On the back of a superb ERO review in 2012, ERO commented that “students at all levels of the school continue to achieve well”, and that “the curriculum embraces and embeds the Steiner/Waldorf vision for confident, connected and actively involved learners”.

Students are “well prepared for learning beyond school”. This is reflected in our steadily increasing senior student achievement results, which show that the majority of students leave Michael Park School with an endorsed NCEA Level 3 qualification.

As an area school we are not zoned, so we draw families from a wide area. Students can commence Steiner Education at any stage of their schooling. Limited places are available for new enrolments in some year levels.

Ellerslie School A warm welcome and a sad farewell

A warm welcome back to our families of Ellerslie School, and in-particular our new families. Education is in exciting times and we are on schedule (June) to move into our 24 new learning spaces, giving our school a total of 31 Modern Learning Environments (MLE’s).

Our roll is continuing to grow (week 2, term 1 – 631 students) with two new classrooms this year in the senior school. We are continuing to keep our class numbers at a good size, for today’s teaching and learning, as our large number of young students move up through the school.

Sandy Simpson, our long serving and popular Deputy Principal, will be leaving at the end of Term 1 and will be replaced by Mr Nick Butler from Kohimarama School. Thank you and good luck Sandy!

Ellerslie Playcentre at the Santa Parade Santa’s local little helpers

Ellerslie Playcentre enjoyed taking a part in the Santa Parade early in December.

Everyone did a great job creating costumes and the children looked extremely festive, as they walked proudly down the Ellerslie Main Highway.

The parade was a huge success, aided by fantastic weather, a great turnout and lots of compliments from members of the public, on how well Ellerslie Playcentre was represented.

The annual Ellerslie Santa Parade is always a

hugely popular event, which our centre takes a keen part in each year and is always a great local opportunity for our dedicated members and lovely children to be seen as integral parts of the community.

After a long summer holiday, we are all very excited to be back at our centre and everyone is looking forward to another action packed year of learning through play.

2016 is shaping up to be another busy and exciting year, with the range of interesting

visitors and outings planned, aimed to stimulate the children’s curiosity of the outside world and create positive connections.

Ellerslie Playcentre is for children from birth to school age, we follow the early childhood curriculum, set in the place by the Ministry of Education, but with a Playcentre spin on it!

Ellerslie Residents’ Association

Mayoral Candidate meeting On Monday 15 February it was great to have all the declared candidates for Mayor, in person, in Ellerslie, so that residents could get to know them first hand. The candidates were certainly made aware of the issues that concern residents with a list of five key topics sent to them, prior to the meeting, regarding how we [the residents] would like to see Ellerslie develop.

Public Meeting - 16 May 2016 This scheduled meeting will be an opportunity for updates and ideas on the major projects that residents are wanting to see progress on; Michaels Avenue Park, sound and pollution barriers on the motorway, an Ellerslie Library

and the Ellerslie Eagles building feasibility study. Also, we will discuss and vote on whether residents are in favour of a targeted rate to fund our Residents Association.

At the moment, as volunteers, your committee sometimes struggles to maintain momentum on the above issues and to keep phoning influential people, such as council officers, who are only available during office hours. It would make a huge difference if the ERA could employ an administrator, for eight hours or more a week, to keep our work moving along.

At the moment it is illegal for local boards to

fund residents’ associations for this, and while nearly 500 people receive our newsletters and express support for the ERA, only 90 have paid their subscription.

Other areas of Auckland have targeted rates.

For instance, in Central Auckland every ratepaying property pays a targeted rate of $113.85 p.a. to fund inner-city amenities. Our proposal is for a mere $5.00 levy which, if paid out of the Council local board budget allocation, based on Ellerslie’s approximately 4,000 properties, would make a quantum difference to the ability of your residents’ association to achieve action on the development of Ellerslie into an improved suburb for its residents.

Turning tug boats into racing yachts

By Hilton Brown While watching a school swimming competition, I couldn’t help but be horrified by the yawning gap between the kids with good swimming technique and those without. It’s like comparing a tug boat with an America’s Cup racer – one pushes its way through the water with sheer force, the other glides through the water with minimal effort.

Good swimming technique is about streamlining and efficiency. It is platform for a lifetime of water enjoyment. Triathlons, harbour

swims, swimming for fitness, surfing and water polo all require a solid foundation of properlytaught swimming skills.

Some parents challenge me on this. They say “My child can already swim 200 metres, so he/ she doesn’t need lessons”. But when I watch that child, the 200 metres is achieved with a lot of uncomfortable hard work. Not only is it difficult to watch, there’s a safety issue because the child is clearly not at home in the water.

My advice to any parent is “start young”.

so that by age eight all the components are in place – streamlining, breathing technique, head position and body position. And I also advise year-round lessons. If you want your child to be a great pianist, you wouldn’t stop lessons for half the year. The same applies to swimming – at least until all the basics have been well and truly mastered.

It’s Never Too Late to Start Exercising

The risks of sedentary lifestyles are well known and have an impact of the health of people at all ages. We understand that in order to live a longer and active life we need to be engaged in regular physical activity throughout our lives.

While we engaged in plenty of activity ourselves when we were younger and encourage our children and grandchildren to be active often we forget our own need to stay active. As we age our ability to perform high intensity activity reduces, however the need for regular active movement is always an important part of maintaining health.

In the New Zealand Ministry of Health 2013 Guidelines for Physical Activity in Older People, Dr Don Mackie, Chief Medical Officer stated, “Physical activity, along with good nutrition, is a key contributor to healthy living. There is a growing body of evidence to suggest that a small, sustained increase in physical activity, along with a reduction in sedentary behaviour, can help in preventing and managing certain chronic diseases and conditions. “ However only 55% of men and 47% of women between 65 and 74 years old are regularly active (a minimum of 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous-intensity physical activity on most days of the week), dropping to 38% for men and 28% of women over 75. Older adults that are not active are missing out on many of the benefits of being active, and it’s not just about being able to live a full life. There are very real benefits to all aspects of life that sedentary older adults are missing out on.

So before you decide to slow down too much, think about how maintaining activity can help you with the following: Preventing Falls The benefits of physical activity and exercise are not limited to those already active. ACC reports that those over 65 have a one in three chance of falling due to poor balance, weak muscles, low blood pressure, poor vision as well as other medical conditions, e.g. Parkinson’s disease, stroke.

Many of these falls could be prevented with regular exercise, at a level that is suitable for the participant. The addition of balance exercises can

decrease the risks of falling by addressing risk factors including poor balance, weak muscles and slower reaction time.

Bone Density/Osteoporosis Bone density can reduce annually by 1-2% in postmenopausal women; regular weight training and weight bearing activity can increase bone density, thus reducing this risk.

Diabetes, Stroke and other Lifestyle Diseases Regular physical activity reduces the risk of lifestyle diseases regardless of age. Just because retirement age has been reached, these benefits don’t stop. In many cases exercise can also contribute to the management of pre existing conditions associated with age, and even those of us who have been previously inactive can benefit.

Social Interaction The benefits of regular physical activity are increased when a level of social interaction is added and not just for you. Encouraging others will give you an opportunity to be social but also offer support to those less likely to lead the way.

Whether your exercise and activity is through a community group exercise instructor, or using a trainer at your local gym, it is important that you get your exercise advice from a Registered Exercise Professional (REPs). All REPs trainers have the relevant knowledge and skill to give you safe and effective exercise advice.

Getting active can be as simple as 30 minutes of gentle exercise, with some exercises that are simple to do at home, but the sky is the limit when it comes to options.
