I would like to thank TEU and particularly the CPIT [TEU] Executive for representing the members of our union in the last negotiation rounds of our TEU /CPIT employment agreement; and what a protracted, difficult and quite heated round of negotiations it was. With the current Industrial disputes hitting the papers and TV recently, it becomes more and more obvious that negotiations and bargaining are more about keeping existing conditions, and not necessarily about improving them. I believe the outcome for most of us in the TEU union at CPIT was better than expected and I would like to thank you all for doing such a great job on our behalf. It gives me and other members I work with peace of mind to know that we have experienced and knowledgeable representatives who are willing and confident to speak up for those of us who don’t feel able or confident enough to speak up for themselves.
While we often take the union for granted, there are some tangible benefits that have come out of TEU’s involvement in recent discussions with our management.
TEU is the union for all staff at CPIT
First of all, my colleagues and I managed to retain our four weeks of discretionary leave. This was very important to us as we use it extensively to remain current in our teaching subjects. TEU have also been invaluable in helping us achieve a reduction in contact teaching hours in our programme. This is something which now means less preparation hours in the evening and on the weekends. I appreciate the efforts that TEU staff and the branch undertake on our behalf. The terms and conditions of our collective agreement mean that I can head off on a six month unpaid leave break. Thanks. - ARNO

TEU has a strong local presence at CPIT with around 12,000 members nationwide. TEU is organised into branches at most tertiary institutions. We never see anyone from the union. Fact TEU has four paid organisers in Christchurch, with one having specific responsibility for CPIT members. Organisers and the branch work together for members at CPIT – there is always something going on! Myth 4 TEU fees are high. Fact TEU fees are based on your salary/wages (0.8%), so the less you earn, the less you contribute. Your fees are also used to provide specialist staff (policy analyst, women’s officer, Te Pou Tuara, media and communications). In addition, fees provide access to an experienced and competent legal adviser.
