The vice-chancellor wants the ability to change some key employment conditions of academic staff at the University of Auckland without our agreement. These conditions include research and study leave, outside activities, promotion criteria and disciplinary guidelines. He wants to do this by removing the conditions from our employment agreements and putting them into Human Resource policy where they can be changed as he sees fit. The vice-chancellor has promised the State Services Commission that he will achieve “administrative efficiencies” with the removal of the conditions, in return for the 4 percent pay increase. Many academic staff on individual agreements have found that these conditions have already been removed from their employment agreements because they did not actively decline the employer offer before the 17 January deadline.
Currently there are 854 Academic TEU members at the University of Auckland, this represents 57 percent of the permanent, regular academic staff at the University of Auckland and this is climbing daily. Let’s make it 1,000 strong by May Day 2011 “This university achieves international standards and recognition because of the quality and commitment of its staff. Day in, day out, people go that extra yard to improve teaching and research outcomes. The staff is the university, and is its success. This should be reflected in the university management’s approach to its staff. At the moment, the opposite is true. University management is seeking to undermine long-standing conditions, without explanation or rationale. This is both disrespectful and disruptive, contributes nothing to teaching and research excellence, and must call into question the quality and judgement of university management.”
