ACTIVITY SHEET 1b FOUR KEY REASONS TO SUPPORT INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Medium‐sized meeting/workshop group discussion 1. Put the general question to all the participants: “Why should we support international development?” 2. The meeting/workshop is then broken into 4 groups. Each group is given one of the key reasons (right) and asked to discuss the question above, arguing for their particular key reason. (see supporting Fact Sheets) Depending on the time available, give them 10‐15 minutes to prepare. Then ask them to come back to the full group and advocate for that particular reason. 3. After the groups report back, advocating for their key reason, the larger group discusses how they should prioritise the 4 key reasons for supporting international aid. Can they identify other reasons why they think it is important for New Zealanders to help workers from developing countries?

Further information to support the four reasons: Solidarity: See Fact Sheets 7, 8, 9 Struggling Families: See Fact Sheets 2, 3 Globalisation: See Fact Sheets 1, 4, 6 Human Rights: See Fact Sheets 5, 10, 11

Solidarity ‐ International worker solidarity is a key union value. Union movements in other countries have long‐established programmes (eg APHEDA in Australia for 25 years) Struggling families like us ‐ Workers and families in developing countries are real people like us struggling in a much tougher environment. Similar aspirations such as education for their children. As neighbours in a relatively prosperous country don’t we have a responsibility to help? Globalisation ‐ In a globalised world reducing exploitation of labour in developing countries is a key factor in fairer trade and competition between countries. Protects jobs in New Zealand and reduces potential international conflict. Basic human rights ‐ Helping workers exercise basic human rights guaranteed by international law. International Labour Organisation minimum labour standard protections against exploitation.
